Abstract:We show that a compact Kahler manifold with nonpositive holomorphic sectional curvature has nef canonical bundle. If the holomorphic sectional curvature is negative then it follows that the canonical bundle is ample, confirming a conjecture of Yau. Abstract:A recent theorem of Diverio–Trapani and Wu–Yau asserts that a compact Kähler manifold with a Kähler metric of quasi-negative holomorphic sectional curvature is projective and canonically polarized. This confirms a long-standing conjecture of Yau. We consider the notion of –quasi-negativity, generalizing quasi-negativity, and obtain gap-type theorems for in terms of the real bisectional curvature and weighted orthogonal Ricci curvature. These theorems are also a generalization of that results by Zhang-Zheng (arXiv:2010.01314v4 ) and Chu-Lee-Tam (Trans Am Math Soc 375(11):7925–7944, 2022).

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the moduli space of curves by using the curvature properties of direct image sheaves of vector bundles. We show that the moduli space $(M_g, \omega_{WP})$ of curves with genus $g>1$ has dual-Nakano negative and semi-Nakano-negative curvature, and in particular, it has non-positive Riemannain curvature operator and also non-positive complex sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that any submanifold in $M_g$ which is totally geodesic in $A_g$ with finite volume must be a ball quotient. We also show that, on a Kodaira (deformation) surface, there is no K\"ahler metric with non-positive Riemannain sectional curvature although it possesses K\"ahler metrics with strictly negative holomorphic bisectional curvature.
Positivity and vanishing theorems in complex and algebraic geometry

Abstract:In this thesis, we consider geometric properties of vector bundles arising from algebraic and Hermitian geometry. On vector bundles in algebraic geometry, such as ample, nef and globally generated vector bundles, we are able to construct positive Hermitian metrics in different senses(e.g. Griffiths-positive, Nakano-positive and dual-Nakano-positive) by L2-method and deduce many new vanishing theorems for them by analytic method instead of the Le Potier-Leray spectral sequence method. On Hermitian manifolds, we find that the second Ricci curvature tensors of various metric connections are closely related to the geometry of Hermitian manifolds. We can derive various vanishing theorems for Hermitian manifolds and also for complex vector bundles over Hermitian manifolds by their second Ricci curvature tensors. We also introduce a natural geometric flow on Hermitian manifolds by using the second Ricci curvature tensor.

Abstract: By using analytic method, we prove that there exist rational curves on compact Hermitian manifolds with positive holomorphic bisectional curvature. It confirms a question of S.-T. Yau. It is well-known that Mori proved in \cite{Mori79} that every compact complex manifold $N$ with $c_1(N)>0$ contains at least one rational curve. However, as a borderline example, we show that the standard Hopf surface $S^1\times S^3$ has a Hermitian metric with non-negative holomorphic bisectional curvature (in particular, $c_1(S^1\times S^3)\geq 0$), but it contains no rational curve.
On the structure of compact Kähler manifolds with nonnegative holomorphic sectional curvature

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a "pseudo-effective" version of the holonomy principle for compact Kähler manifolds with nonnegative holomorphic sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that if a compact complex manifold $M$ admits a Kähler metric $\omega$ with nonnegative holomorphic sectional curvature and $(M,\omega)$ has no nonzero truly flat tangent vector at some point (which is satisfied when the holomorphic sectional curvature is quasi-positive), then $M$ must be projective and rationally connected. This answers a problem raised by Matsumura and Yang and extends Yau's conjecture. We also prove that a compact simply connected Kähler manifold with nonnegative holomorphic sectional curvature is projective and rationally connected. Additionally, we classify non-projective Kähler 3-dimensional manifolds with nonnegative holomorphic sectional curvature. Furthermore, we show that a compact Kähler manifold admits a Hermitian metric with positive real bisectional curvature is a projective and rationally connected manifold.

Abstract:In this work we consider compact Kähler manifolds with non-positive mixed curvature which is a “convex combination” of Ricci curvature and holomorphic sectional curvature. We show that in this case, the canonical line bundle is nef. Moreover, if the curvature is negative at some point, then the manifold is projective with canonical line bundle being big and nef. If in addition the curvature is negative, then the canonical line bundle is ample. As an application, we answer a question of Ni [Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 74 (2021), pp. 1100–1126] concerning manifolds with negative k k -Ricci curvature and generalize a result of Wu-Yau [Comm. Anal. Geom. 24 (2016), pp. 901–912] and Diverio-Trapani [J. Differential Geom. 111 (2019), pp. 303–314] to the conformally Kähler case. We also show that the compact Kähler manifold is projective and simply connected if the mixed curvature is positive.

There are two purposes of this paper: One is to give a proof of the main result in [WY16] without going through the argument depending on numerical effectiveness. The other one is to provide a proof of our conjecture, mentioned in [TY], where the assumption of negative holomorphic sectional curvature is dropped to quasi-negative. We should note that a solution to our conjecture is also provided by Diverio-Trapani [DT]. Both proofs depend on our argument in [WY16]. But our argument here makes use of the argument given by the second author and Cheng in [CY75].

Abstract:Let $X$ be a complex projective variety with only canonical singularities and with trivial canonical bundle. Let $L$ be an ample line bundle on $X$. Assume that the pair $(X,L)$ is the flat limit of a family of smooth polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds. Assume that for each singular point $x \in X$ there exist a Kahler-Einstein Fano manifold $Z$ and a positive integer $q$ dividing $K_Z$ such that $-\frac{1}{q}K_Z$ is very ample and such that the germ $(X,x)$ is locally analytically isomorphic to a neighborhood of the vertex of the blow-down of the zero section of $\frac{1}{q}K_{Z}$. We prove that up to biholomorphism, the unique weak Ricci-flat Kahler metric representing $2\pi c_1(L)$ on $X$ is asymptotic at a polynomial rate near $x$ to the natural Ricci-flat Kahler cone metric on $\frac{1}{q}K_Z$ constructed using the Calabi ansatz. In particular, our result applies if $(X, \mathcal{O}(1))$ is a nodal quintic threefold in $\mathbb{P}^4$. This provides the first known examples of compact Ricci-flat manifolds with non-orbifold isolated conical singularities.

Abstract:Given a family $$f:\mathcal{X} \to S$$ of canonically polarized manifolds, the unique Kähler–Einstein metrics on the fibers induce a hermitian metric on the relative canonical bundle $$\mathcal{K}_{\mathcal{X}/S}$$. We use a global elliptic equation to show that this metric is strictly positive on $$\mathcal{X}$$, unless the family is infinitesimally trivial.For degenerating families we show that the curvature form on the total space can be extended as a (semi-)positive closed current. By fiber integration it follows that the generalized Weil–Petersson form on the base possesses an extension as a positive current. We prove an extension theorem for hermitian line bundles, whose curvature forms have this property. This theorem can be applied to a determinant line bundle associated to the relative canonical bundle on the total space. As an application the quasi-projectivity of the moduli space $$\mathcal{M}_{\text{can}}$$ of canonically polarized varieties follows.The direct images $$R^{n-p}f_{*}\Omega^{p}_{\mathcal{X}/S}(\mathcal {K}_{\mathcal{X}/S}^{\otimes m})$$, m>0, carry natural hermitian metrics. We prove an explicit formula for the curvature tensor of these direct images. We apply it to the morphisms $$S^{p}\mathcal{T}_{S} \to R^{p}f_{*}\Lambda^{p}\mathcal{T}_{\mathcal{X}/S}$$ that are induced by the Kodaira–Spencer map and obtain a differential geometric proof for hyperbolicity properties of $$\mathcal{M}_{\text{can}}$$.

Abstract:Motivated by the recent work of Wu and Yau on the ampleness of a canonical line bundle for projective manifolds with negative holomorphic sectional curvature, we introduce a new curvature notion called real bisectional curvature for Hermitian manifolds. When the metric is Kahler, this is just the holomorphic sectional curvature H, and when the metric is non-Kahler, it is slightly stronger than H. We classify compact Hermitian manifolds with constant nonzero real bisectional curvature, and also slightly extend Wu and Yau's theorem to the Hermitian case. The underlying reason for the extension is that the Schwarz lemma of Wu and Yau works the same when the target metric is only Hermitian but has nonpositive real bisectional curvature.

Abstract:A well known conjecture in complex geometry states that a compact Hermitian manifold with constant holomorphic sectional curvature must be Kähler if the constant is non-zero and must be Chern flat if the constant is zero. The conjecture is confirmed in complex dimension $2$, by the work of Balas-Gauduchon in 1985 (when the constant is zero or negative) and by Apostolov-Davidov-Muskarov in 1996 (when the constant is positive). For higher dimensions, the conjecture is still largely unknown. In this article, we restrict ourselves to the class of complex nilmanifolds and confirm the conjecture in that case.
