Abstract:In modern times,while Western learnings were introduced into China,Confucian classics became historiography.The East Zhejiang scholarship integrated the classics with the institution,which made it an important site for modern scholars to communicate between the old（China） and the new（West）,and build the new academic system.Liu Xianxin regarded the East Zhejiang scholarship his principal learning.He compiled The Collection of Roots（Xianhe Lu） many times,and constructed an academic genealogy of the East Zhejiang scholarship which perceived the Wuzhou historiography as the surface and Yaojiang Neo-Confucianism as the core.Moreover,Liu Xianxin explored the academic origin of literary and historical collation of the East Zhejiang School in the way of "knowing the categories and understanding the general system",and tried to integrate the study of life with the study of classics and history,in order to achieve the modern transformation of Chinese scholarship.The paper probes the sources and purposes of the original meaning and theme of Xianhe Lu,and hopes to show that the modern East Zhejiang School had been constantly shaped in the historical context and academic network.In addition,the paper also tends to provide some thoughts on how to clarify the changes of modern scholarship and analyze the transformation of Chinese civilization.

Abstract:In the Late Qing and the Republic of China,scholars had developed different paths in transforming traditional academics and bridging Sino-Western and old-new in the context of the evolution of Classical Studies and Historiography.Two distinct schools of Confucianism came into being in the Republic of China: one was the historical ″Guwen″ represented by Zhang Taiyan and his students,the other was the philosophic Jinwen represented by Liaoping and his students.With the aggravation of the National Calamity in the 1930s and revival of Confucianism,it was a common practice to promote Chinese culture and national spirits.Thus the transformation and practice of Confucianism became the focus in the discussion between the two different schools.During the dispute Meng Wentong and Li Yuancheng,Liao Ping's students,argued with Zhang Taiyan and Huang Kan constantly about sinology and Neo-Confucianism,″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen,″ and ″Classical Studies″ and ″Historiography″ to clarify the origin and development of Confucian philosophy. After a careful study of Qing's academic history and looking into the relations between Dai Zhen's philosophy and Xun Zi,Zhang Taiyan emphasized the unique significance of Dai Zhen in Qing's Academic history.On the contrary,Meng Wentong and Li Yuancheng resorted to traditional sinology and Confucian theories to question the construction of Dai Zhen's theory.Based on the examination of Examine Goodness,Li Yuancheng criticized Dai Zhen's doctrine of Ethics,Desire and Goodness as a misunderstanding of Mencius.Based on Guwen and centreing around the separation of Confucianism and Buddhism,Zhang Taiyan stressed the reliability of the historical account of the Six Classics to respond to the Skeptical School and illustrated the ideological and cultural tradition of China in the past two thousand years.Li Yuancheng had developed Liao Ping's theory and discussed with Zhang Taiyan the Rites and Spring and Autumn aiming to link ″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen″ and to reiterate the Great Righteousness of Spring and Autumn.Meng Wentong,through his study of the development of Confucian philosophy in Zhou dynasty,Qin dynasty and the two Han dynasties,attempted to find the succession of Confucianism and Mencius's thoughts,to analyze the philosophy of ″humanity and destiny,″ to interpret the controversies over Mencius and Xun Zi,to clarify the origin of sinology,and to challenge Cheng Zhu Confucian Orthodoxy.In short,Liao Ping's students had constructed a Confucian system based on the ″Goodness″ of Mencius,theoretically paving the way for for Jinwen and Confucian historiography. The school of Zhang Taiyan-Huang Kan purported to explore the development of national cultures,focused on the language and history,and advocated the cultivation of mind and behavior.Thus,it had associated moral ethics with political and social pragmaticism and had started the practical academics of Classical Studies and Historiography.In contrast,Liao Ping's students emphasized on constructing an dynamic interaction between the meanings of Classics,institution,and historical facts,carrying forward the ″New Confucianism of Qin and Han,″ and elucidating the revolutionary spirit of Jinwen and system design.Dispute of ″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen″ manifested the core difference of the academic interests between the schools of Zhang Taiyan-Huang Kan and Liao Ping's students.A clarification of their differences and disputes is of importance in interpreting the diversification of modern Confucianism and providing intellectual resources for the building of a nation-state or a civilization-state.

Abstract:The length of a university history in general is closely linked to the academic tradition and quality of a given institution.The history of a university requires objective evaluation of the role and influence of many of its presidents and prominent figures,regardless of their political identities.The writing of a university history requires a truthful and critical representation of the past,so as to set oneself an example to others.The cultural heritage of the research university comprises not only its academic tradition and campus scenery,but also its character,ethos,motto,anthem,atmosphere,emblem and architecture.There is a phenomenon of "competition between two universities" in the history and culture of research universities.Despite of certain negative influence,such competition in general spurs both institutions to strive forward for a win-win situation.
Reform of the Traditional Historiography and Compilation of the New History:the Purport of A History of Chinese Historiography by Jin Yufu

Abstract:A History of Chinese Historiography by Jin Yufu is considered an important milestone of the initial formation of the discipline——Chinese historiography history. Since the publication of the book, it is full of controversy. Those who praise regard it as the first relatively complete writing of Chinese Historiography; those who criticize argue that the book is a misunderstanding of Chinese Historiography, and some even question the value of this discipline. According to the academic context of Jin Yufu, it is clear that he distinguishes historical materials from historiography based on the difference between jizhu and zhuanshu. Consequently, he legitimate traditional historiography as the materials of the new general history. This idea inherits the Movement for Rearranging the National Heritage, deciding his method, materials, and purport——rearrangement of the traditional historiography, discrimination of historical records, measurement of the historical material value and genre evolution, and the compilation of new general history on the basis of the above three. With his A History of Chinese Historiography and A History of Song, Liao and Jin, Jin Yufu practices his compilation of new general history with the reform of the traditional historiography. With the study of the context and impact of A History of Chinese Historiography, the pluralism of the academic development in the Republic of China can be revealed and thus breaking the subject boundaries.

Abstract:The fu theory advanced by Zhang Xuecheng of the Qing Dynasty is of inspiring significance to our exploration of the origin, development and connection with the academic of fu. The extensive fu of the Han Dynasty of historical annals features and reference book features and the imperial examination system taking fu as its form since the Dynasty objectively gear the fu creation into an academic track. In the fu studies, fu theories of successive dynasties are mainly embodied in the annotations and evaluations of practical criticism, attaching importance to the talent of fu masters and the function of fu creation, which is related to the academic tradition, cultural system and fu features.

Abstract:Chen Yinque,the great historian,wrote a series of prefaces to the works by other scholars and epilogues with reference to old documents,in which he reflected on his academic experience and research methods,and expressed his feelings about life and worldly affairs.These writings are not only based on Chen's interpretation and affirmation of the significance of the academic researches with his sympathy of understanding,but also serve as a way to comfort his friends,which can be seen as important materials to reveal Chen Yinque's academic approaches and spirits as well as his attitude towards life.This article discusses Chen's research methods in history studies by analyzing dozens of his prefaces and epilogues collected in the Anthology of Chen Yinque,and also attempts to interpret Chen Yinque both as a person and as a scholar in an alternative way.

Abstract:The research on Yuefu poetry during the first half of the 20thcentury developed extensively in such universities and research institutes as Peking University,Tsinghua University,National Southwest Associated University,and others.As a scholar of Academicism,Huang Jie(黄节) first created the mode of research on Yuefu poetry.Meanwhile,the mode of research on Yuefu poetry of the Han,the Wei and the Six Dynasties was energetically promoted by the Folksongs Movement(歌谣运动) and the May Fourth New Culture Movement(新文学运动).After that,some scholars like Zheng Zhenduo(郑振铎),Lu Kanru(陆侃如) and Feng Yuanjun(冯沅君) interpreted Yuefu poetry with the concept of the civilian literature(平民文学) and the vernacular-Chinese literature(白话文学).Some other scholars such as Liang Qichao(梁启超),Luo Genze(罗根泽),Xiao Difei(萧涤非) and Wang Yunxi(王运熙),strove to integrate the traditional research method with new aesthetic ideas.In reality,the above-mentioned research methods were combined with each other.This article is intended to review the research by different scholars of that period on Yuefu poetry,and to construct an academic history on their research during the 20thcentury.

Abstract:Great historian Chen Yinke wrote a series of prefaces to the works of other scholars and epilogues with reference to old documents, in which he presented his considerations of his academic road and research methods, and expressed his feelings about life and worldly affairs. These writings are not only Chen's profound interpretation and affirmation of the significance of the academic researches with the "sympathy of understanding", but also serve as a way to comfort his friends, which can be seen as important materials to reveal his academic experiences, spirits and views. This article intends to discuss Chen’s research methods and ideas in history studies by analyzing dozens of prefaces and epilogues collected in the "Anthology of Chen Yinke", and thus wishes to comb out a fresh interpretive mode for the studies of Chen Yingke and his scholarship.

Abstract:The history of a university should be a comprehensive history of the university. Due to the unique position of university history in the educational, cultural and social histories, studies on university history have special significance not possessed by general historical studies. However, under specific conditions in China, a university was subjected to frequent disintegration and merging with its fate hard to be predicted, rendering the studies on university history more complex and difficult. Abstract:From the beginning of the twentieth century to the present, the development of the history of education in China can be divided into four stages: a budding period, one of tortuous development, a recovery stage and finally one of stable growth influenced by various ideas and themes from other countries. Abundant academic areas and topics as well as a diversity of research methods have shaped this discipline and borne remarkable academic fruit while pursuing Chinese features in discipline-building. However, such problems as crisis in the discipline, discipline categorisation and the gap between academic values and practical applications of the research outcome are prominent issues with which researchers in history of education in China need to grapple. In the future, studies of educational historiography, the enrichment of historical materials, the proper treatment of interdisciplinary research and the internationalisation of the discipline need to be further worked on in order to advance the field.

Abstract:This article deals with the academic orientation of the Chinese overseas studies. From a perspective of academic history, the author points out the Chinese overseas studies obviously cannot become an independent discipline because of its concrete subject matter and impossibility of scientific abstraction. However, the appearance of various interdisciplinary subjects will definitely facilitate the establishment of the Chinese overseas studies as a relatively unique field in the future.

Abstract:Professor Zhang Peiheng accepted Marxism ever since his younger years.He admired Lu Xun's artistic thoughts all through his life.He studied modern literature,foreign literature and literary theories with Professor Jia Zhifang and had an empathy with the May Fourth ethos and the mission of modern intellectuals.He studied ancient literature and skepticism with Professor Zhu Dongrun,received fundamental training of ancient classics and moral uprightness from Professor Jiang Tianshu.He later drew the advantages from the Sinology studies in Japan and achieved great success in Chinese literature research.He had become leading authority of the humanities and excellent inheritor of Fudan's academic tradition.

Abstract:Since the 1970s,a lot of bamboo slips and silks for writing and missing ancient books have been unearthed for us to rethink,re-understand and re-evaluate ancient Chinese academic history,whose significance can be reflected in the five aspects.First,creditability of ancient books can be recognized;second,writing time can be confirmed roughly;third,academic value can be understood further;fourth,new judgment can be made to the academic origins;fifth,the academic history of some vassal state of the Warring States period can be redefined.On the basis of these discoveries,ancient Chinese academic history may be re-written,which will promote ancient Chinese cultural researches.
