Abstract:In this work, a technique to produce spatial electromagnetic modes with definite orbital angular momentum is presented. The method is based in the construction of binary diffractive gratings generated by computer. In the classical regime the gratings produce the well known Laguerre-Gaussian modes distributions when illuminated by a plane wave. In the quantum regime the grating is placed in the signal path of a spontaneous parametric down conversion layout and the diffraction pattern, observed in the coincidence count rate, shows that the single photons are projected onto spatial states consistent with a Laguerre-Gaussian modes distribution.

Abstract:Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) mode is the eigen-state of the orbital angular momentum of photon. It has potential applications in the fields of optical tweezer, quantum information process and computation. Two kinds of recording mediums-holographic plate and ink-jet transparent film-are used to manufacture the holographic grating. Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) modes with topological indices from the first order to high order have been observed in the experiment. It is also noticed the high order modes are spatial unstable. Furthermore, the related controlling parameters, such as the exposure time and intensity which influence the diffraction efficiency, are discussed in detail.

Abstract:Laser light with a Laguerre-Gaussian amplitude distribution is found to have a well-defined orbital angular momentum. An astigmatic optical system may be used to transform a high-order Laguerre-Gaussian mode into a high-order Hermite-Gaussian mode reversibly. An experiment is proposed to measure the mechanical torque induced by the transfer of orbital angular momentum associated with such a transformation.

Abstract:We demonstrate an ultra-broadband multi-channel orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode generator using a helical long-period grating (HLPG) pair in a few-mode fiber. The numbers of the channel of the OAM mode generator can be flexibly adjusted by designing the cascaded length of the HLPG pair. When the cascaded length is 50 cm, the maximum channel number of OAM mode generator reaches 46, and the mode convert efficiencies of the channels are more than 90 %, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest number of channels among OAM mode converters. By reducing grating length and enhancing the refractive index modulation depth, the 3 dB bandwidth of the HLPG is significantly increased, and thus the wavelength range of the HLPG pair can be expanded. The maximum wavelength ranges of the channels with coupling efficiency greater than 90 % are measured to be 379 nm experimentally. By adjusting the spiral direction of the helical refractive index modulation, we can achieve multi-channel ± 1 order OAM mode conversion for each channel. The multi-channel OAM mode generator holds substantial potential for applications in mode division multiplexing systems, wavelength filters, and fiber sensing.

Abstract:Spin and orbital angular momenta of light are attractive resources to harness for encoding, and manipulating information, with applications in various quantum photonic technologies. However, to fully harness that potential, we require robust sources of high-order angular momentum photons exhibiting nonclassical correlations. Here we propose a fiber-based source of polarization-entangled photons in high-order orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes. In our setup the pairs or photons are generated in a cylindrical fiber through a four-wave mixing process, which induces polarization, or spin entanglement. The photons are then converted to modes exhibiting large OAM by the two helical gratings inscribed in the core of the fiber. We present a complete theoretical framework used to consistently describe this process, and demonstrate a robust control over the joint spectral amplitude of the generated photons.

Abstract:We report a compact scheme for the generation and manipulation of photon pairs entangled in the orbital angular momentum (OAM) from the fork-poling quadratic nonlinear crystal. The χ(2)-modulation in this crystal is designed for fulfilling a tilted quasi-phase-matching geometry to ensure the efficient generation of entangled photons as well as for transferring of topological charge of the crystal to the photon pairs. Numerical results show that the OAM of photon pair is anti-correlated and the degree of OAM entanglement can be enhanced by modulating the topological charge of crystal, which indicates a feasible extension to high-dimensional OAM entanglement. These studies suggest that the fork-poling nonlinear photonic crystal a unique platform for compact generation and manipulation of high-dimensional and high-order OAM entanglement, which may have potential applications in quantum communication, quantum cryptography and quantum remote sensing.

Abstract:A method to generate the optical vortex beam with arbitrary superposition of different orders of orbital angular momentum (OAM) on a photonic chip is proposed. The distributed Fourier holographic gratings are proposed to convert the propagating wave in waveguides to a vortex beam in the free space, and the components of different OAMs can be controlled by the amplitude and phases of on-chip incident light based on the principle of Fourier transformation. As an example, we studied a typical device composed of nine Fourier holographic gratings on fan-shaped waveguides. By scalar diffraction calculation, the OAM of the optical beam from the reconfigurable vortex beam generator can be controlled on-demand from -2nd to 2nd by adjusting the phase of input light fields, which is demonstrated numerically with the fidelity of generated optical vortex beam above 0.69. The working bandwidth of the Fourier holographic grating is about 80 nm with a fidelity above 0.6. Our work provides an feasible method to manipulate the vortex beam or detect arbitrary superposition of OAMs, which can be used in integrated photonics structures for optical trapping, signal processing, and imaging.

Quantum Commutation Relationship for Photonic Orbital Angular Momentum

Abstract:Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) of photons are already ubiquitously being used for numerous applications. However, there is a fundamental question whether photonic OAM operators satisfy standard quantum mechanical commutation relationship or not; this also poses a serious concern on the interpretation of an optical vortex as a fundamental quantum degree of freedom. Here, we examined canonical angular momentum operators defined in a cylindrical coordinate, and applied them to Laguerre-Gauss (LG) modes in a graded index (GRIN) fibre. We confirmed the validity of commutation relationship for the LG modes and found that ladder operators also work properly with the increment or decrement in units of the Dirac constant ($\hbar$). With those operators, we calculated the quantum-mechanical expectation value of the magnitude of angular momentum, which includes contributions from both intrinsic and extrinsic OAM. The obtained results suggest that OAM characterised by the LG modes exhibits a well-defined quantum degree of freedom.

Abstract:The rapid developments in orbital-angular-momentum-carrying Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) modes in recent years have facilitated progress in optical communication and quantum information. However, it is still challenging to efficiently generate the high-fidelity LG laser modes. We propose a scheme to generate the high-fidelity ultraviolet (UV) LG mode via four-wave mixing (FWM) in a five-level atomic system. It is found that the output FWM field transferred from a probe beam carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) can be efficiently controlled. Interestingly, by appropriate choices of the system parameters, the FWM field can be significantly enhanced and the maximum FWM conversion efficiency is more than 60%, which is several orders of magnitude larger than many previous investigations. More importantly, the fidelity of the output FWM field is studied and find that the generated LG laser mode has the fidelity approximately 100%. As we known, any light beam can be decomposed as a linear combination of LG beams and we can expand the theoretical approach to the case of an arbitrary LG probe beam. Thus, our work may be exploited for generation of the high-fidelity UV LG mode in a compact, efficient, and robust way.

Highly efficient nonlinear vortex beam generation by using a compact nonlinear fork grating

Abstract:Vortex beams with an orbital angular momentum (OAM) are extremely important in optical trapping, optical micromachining, high-capacity optical communications, and quantum optics. Nonlinear generation of such a vortex beam enables vortex beams to be obtained at new wavelengths, which opens up new possibilities for all-optical switching and manipulation of vortex beams. However, previous nonlinear vortex beam generation suffers from either low efficiency or low-level integration. Here, we use the technique of ultraviolet photolithography-assisted inductively coupled plasma (ICP) etching to realize a compact nonlinear fork grating for high-efficiency nonlinear vortex beam generation. In our experiment, the depth of such a compact nonlinear fork-grating structure can be precisely controlled by etching time. The vortex beams with a topological charge of l = ±1, ± 2, ± 3 can be generated in the far field, and the normalized nonlinear conversion efficiency of such nonlinear vortex beam is 189% W-1cm-2. Our method not only provides an efficient and compact method for nonlinear vortex beam manipulation but also suits for timesaving and large-area nonlinear functional device fabrication.

Abstract:Superposed Laguerre‐Gaussian beams‐based orbital angular momentum holography is demonstrated theoretically and experimentally. In the absence of a matching field, the output images retain the properties of incident beams with a varying number of bright petals in each sampling pixel. Further, the output images can be reconstructed with multiple matching fields that lead to different intensities. Orbital angular momentum (OAM) holography implements OAM of light as an information carrier to reconstruct holographic images, due to a physically unbounded set of orthogonal OAM modes. Here, superposed Laguerre‐Gaussian (LG) beams are employed as incident beams to achieve OAM holography. Notably, this scheme utilizes exact complex‐amplitude modulation, as opposed to mere phase‐only modulation, ensuring the maintenance of amplitude information. In the absence of a matching field, the output images retain the properties of incident beams with a varying number of bright petals in each sampling pixel. On the other hand, when specific incident beams are illuminated, the output images can be reconstructed with multiple matching fields that lead to different intensities. It is essential to recognize that the bright spot in each sampling pixel of the output image achieves its peak intensity only when the matching field is the conjugate of the incident light field. This work offers a novel perspective on reconstructing holographic images through various matching fields and modulating the brightness of distinct holographic images in OAM‐multiplexing holography. Additionally, a theoretically infinite number of bright petals in each sampling pixel can also serve as information carriers in holography.

Abstract:Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) optical modes have been extensively investigated for decades, as they are promising for e . g . optical communication, superresolution imaging, precision measurement, and quantum information processing. These applications inevitably require a high-quality LG laser mode, the production of which is a great challenge for current techniques. This work demonstrates a compact solid-state LG-mode laser with low threshold, high efficiency, high purity, and flexible controllability. This laser’s excellent performance makes it a practical tool for various advanced applications.

Abstract:In recent years, optical vortex beams possessing orbital angular momentum have caught much attention due to their potential for high capacity optical communications. This capability arises from the unbounded topological charges of orbital angular momentum (OAM) that provides infinite freedoms for encoding information. The two most common approaches for generating vortex beams are through fork diffraction gratings and spiral phase plates. While realization of conventional spiral phase plate requires complicated 3D fabrication, the emerging field of metasurfaces has provided a planar and facile solution for generating vortex beams of arbitrary orbit angular momentum. Here we realize a novel type of geometric metasurface fork grating that seamlessly combine the functionality of a metasurface phase plate for vortex beam generation, and that of a linear phase gradient metasurface for controlling the wave propagation direction. The metasurface fork grating is therefore capable of simultaneously controlling both the spin and the orbital angular momentum of light.
Spatiotemporal optical vortices with controllable radial and azimuthal quantum numbers

Abstract:Optical spatiotemporal vortices with transverse photon orbital angular momentum (OAM) have recently become a focal point of research. In this work we theoretically and experimentally investigate optical spatiotemporal vortices with radial and azimuthal quantum numbers, known as spatiotemporal Laguerre-Gaussian (STLG) wavepackets. These 3D wavepackets exhibit phase singularities and cylinder-shaped edge dislocations, resulting in a multi-ring topology in its spatiotemporal profile. Unlike conventional ST optical vortices, STLG wavepackets with non-zero p and l values carry a composite transverse OAM consisting of two directionally opposite components. We further demonstrate mode conversion between an STLG wavepacket and an ST Hermite-Gaussian wavepacket through the application of strong spatiotemporal astigmatism. The converted STHG wavepacket is de-coupled in intensity in space-time domain that can be utilized to implement the efficient and accurate recognition of ultrafast STLG wavepackets carried various p and l. This study may offer new insights into high-dimensional quantum information, photonic topology, and nonlinear optics, while promising potential applications in other wave phenomena such as acoustics and electron waves.

Abstract:A full C- and L-band covered second-order orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) mode generator has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated, which is realized by using a helical long-period fiber grating (HLPG) but inscribed in a thinned four-mode fiber. By optimizing the design of grating period and fiber diameter of the proposed HLPG, an ultra-broadband rejection filter with a depth of ∼23 dB, a bandwidth of ∼156 nm @-10 dB (ranging from 1522 nm to 1678 nm) and a bandwidth of ∼58 nm @-20 dB (ranging from 1574 nm to 1632 nm), has been successfully obtained as a typical sample. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of such ultra-broadband second-order OAM mode generator by using only one fiber component, i.e., the thinned HLPG. In addition, the proposed generator is less polarization-dependent and less temperature-sensitive than those of the conventional HLPGs, which is believed to be considerably helpful to find potential applications of the device itself in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and OAM mode division multiplexing (MDM) optical fiber communication systems.

Abstract:Broadband generation of orbital angular momentum (OAM) beam in fiber has a lot of applications in optical communications and fiber sensing. However, the efficient broadband generation of second-order OAM beam using long-period fiber grating (LPFG) is still a great challenge due to the low intermodal overlap. In this paper, we achieved a 108.96 nm efficient broadband generation of second-order OAM beams with a conversion efficiency over 95 in experiment using an angular modulated cascading LPFG with low insertion loss. By changing the refractive index modulation area in certain angle, not only the coupling between fundamental mode and second-order mode in fiber can be greatly enhanced, but also second-order even and odd modes are generated with approximately equal magnitudes, which is very beneficial to high-purity OAM beams generation. Finally, by choosing proper cascading parameters and an adaptive refractive index modulation fabrication strategy, we achieved a LPFG mode converter with a conversion efficiency over 95 in a 108.96 nm from 1520.96 nm to 1629.92 nm. The insertion loss of the LPFG is measured only 0.48 dB.

Abstract:In this article, a method for the simultaneous generation of multiple higher-order orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes in a few-mode fiber (FMF) using a single long-period fiber grating (LPFG) is proposed and demonstrated. The high diffraction order of the grating is used to achieve the resonant coupling of multiple modes, and the coupling coefficients of different order modes are balanced by a preset-twist method. This solves the two coupling problems of over-coupling for lower-order modes and difficult excitation of higher-order modes faced by multi-order mode generation, and overcomes the challenge of balanced excitation of multiple modes with high coupling efficiency. In the experiment, the simultaneous generation and flexible combination of first-order, second-order and third-order OAM modes are successfully achieved in a six-mode fiber, in which the mode order, resonant wavelength and wavelength interval can be flexibly controlled. By fabricating with grating periods of 2300 m, 782 m and 990 m, respectively, high conversion efficiency of first-order and second-order modes, first-order and third-order modes, second-order and third-order modes can be generated simultaneously. In addition, for the first time, the first-order, second-order and third-order modes are generated simultaneously at a grating period of 1630 m with conversion efficiencies of 98.61, 99.11 and 98.89, respectively. The mode profiles and interference patterns of different order modes show that multiple higher-order OAM modes with insertion loss less than 1 dB and mode purity over 95 are successfully generated.
