Abstract:We demonstrate an ultra-broadband multi-channel orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode generator using a helical long-period grating (HLPG) pair in a few-mode fiber. The numbers of the channel of the OAM mode generator can be flexibly adjusted by designing the cascaded length of the HLPG pair. When the cascaded length is 50 cm, the maximum channel number of OAM mode generator reaches 46, and the mode convert efficiencies of the channels are more than 90 %, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest number of channels among OAM mode converters. By reducing grating length and enhancing the refractive index modulation depth, the 3 dB bandwidth of the HLPG is significantly increased, and thus the wavelength range of the HLPG pair can be expanded. The maximum wavelength ranges of the channels with coupling efficiency greater than 90 % are measured to be 379 nm experimentally. By adjusting the spiral direction of the helical refractive index modulation, we can achieve multi-channel ± 1 order OAM mode conversion for each channel. The multi-channel OAM mode generator holds substantial potential for applications in mode division multiplexing systems, wavelength filters, and fiber sensing.

Abstract:An approach to producing electromagnetic (EM) waves carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) by using three-dimensional (3D) photonic crystals (PCs) is proposed. By introducing a point defect in the PCs, a localized rotation mode is excited and then radiated out through a circular opening upon the defect. The radiated wave carries well-defined OAM. The lowest four OAM modes, i.e., OAM indices of ±1 and ±2, are successfully generated. The effectiveness of our approach is validated by both full-wave simulations and experiments.

Abstract:In this article, a method for the simultaneous generation of multiple higher-order orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes in a few-mode fiber (FMF) using a single long-period fiber grating (LPFG) is proposed and demonstrated. The high diffraction order of the grating is used to achieve the resonant coupling of multiple modes, and the coupling coefficients of different order modes are balanced by a preset-twist method. This solves the two coupling problems of over-coupling for lower-order modes and difficult excitation of higher-order modes faced by multi-order mode generation, and overcomes the challenge of balanced excitation of multiple modes with high coupling efficiency. In the experiment, the simultaneous generation and flexible combination of first-order, second-order and third-order OAM modes are successfully achieved in a six-mode fiber, in which the mode order, resonant wavelength and wavelength interval can be flexibly controlled. By fabricating with grating periods of 2300 m, 782 m and 990 m, respectively, high conversion efficiency of first-order and second-order modes, first-order and third-order modes, second-order and third-order modes can be generated simultaneously. In addition, for the first time, the first-order, second-order and third-order modes are generated simultaneously at a grating period of 1630 m with conversion efficiencies of 98.61, 99.11 and 98.89, respectively. The mode profiles and interference patterns of different order modes show that multiple higher-order OAM modes with insertion loss less than 1 dB and mode purity over 95 are successfully generated.

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes in fibers process great potentials in providing, from a higher dimension, extra communication channels to meet the ever-growing bandwidth requirement for modern information infrastructures. Long period fiber gratings are commonly used to generate these modes in fibers by coupling fundamental modes to degenerate higher order modes. In order for the generation process to be selective for a certain OAM mode, careful control of the state of polarization (SOP) is required for input fundamental modes. Here, we propose a non-conventional long period fiber grating with not only longitudinal index modulation but also azimuthal parity-time symmetry index modulation, and by placing this grating system at the parity-time exceptional point, an OAM mode with its topological charge matched to the parity-time modulation could be exclusively excited by using any fundamental modes with an arbitrary SOP except for the particular SOP with exactly opposite helicity. Our concept demonstrated here to generate OAM modes in fibers may open up promising applications in parity-time OAM-fiber optics. Published under license by AIP Publishing.

Abstract:In this paper we propose a novel design and theoretically analyse it for bi-directional orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode generation in high numerical aperture (NA) optical fiber using combination of long period grating, short-period (Bragg) grating and a three port optical circulator. The proposed design consisting only standard fiber gratings rather than specially designed fibers, like ring-shaped fiber or other types of fiber, makings our model relatively simple. The full-vector true-mode analysis has been used to study the modal characteristics of the supported modes in the high-NA fiber. High-NA optical fiber can effectively relieve the degeneracy of the linearly polarised modes. A circularly polarised (CP) light is injected into a single mode fiber, the output end of which is axially spliced to a high NA fiber. An appropriately designed raised-cosine apodized tilted long period grating (TLPG) is used for broad bandwidth coupling of the fundamental HE11 mode to co-propagating HE21 mode. The employed TLPG converts the circularly polarised fundamental core mode (HE_x11 ± iHE_y11 ) to ±1-order OAM modes (HE_even 21 ± iHE_odd21 ). Both the CP mode and the generated OAM pass through the circulator in the direction of port 1 to port 2. A second fiber is connected at the output of the port 2, and a tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) is used to couple the forward propagating HE11 core mode with the counter-propagating HE21, EH11 and HE31 core modes. The TFBG reflected higher order (±1 and ±2) OAM modes transmit through the port 3. We have observed that the TFBG has a mode conversion efficiency of more than 95% for each mode conversion. The generated vortex beam's topological charges have been varified using the coaxial interference method.

Abstract:By exploiting helical gratings (HGs), we propose and simulate flexible generation, conversion and exchange of fiber guided orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes. HGs can enable the generation of OAM modes, and the OAM conversion between two arbitrary modes guided in fibers. A specific HG can exchange the OAM states of a couple of OAM modes, i.e, OAM exchange. In addition, a Fabry Perot cavity cascaded with two identical reflective HGs can reflect converted OAM modes with a comb spectrum. The HGs based generation conversion and exchange of OAM modes are dependent on helix period, orientation, and the fold number of helical fringes. The proposed method of generation, conversion, and exchange of fiber guided OAM modes using HGs is flexible and well compatible with OAM fibers, featuring a high conversion efficiency close to 100% and a conversion bandwidth about 10 nm in transmission spectra, while less than 1 nm in reflection spectra.

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams, characterized by the helical phase wavefront, have received significant interest in various areas of study. There are many methods to generate OAM beams, which can be roughly divided into two types: spatial methods and fiber methods. As a natural shaper of OAM beams, the fibers exhibit unique merits, namely, miniaturization and a low insertion loss. In this paper, we review the recent advances in fiber OAM mode generation systems, in both the interior and exterior of the beams. We introduce the basic concepts of fiber modes and the generation and detection theories of OAM modes. In addition, fiber systems based on different nuclear devices are introduced, including the long-period fiber grating, the mode-selective coupler, microstructural optical fiber, and the photonic lantern. Finally, the key challenges and prospects for fiber OAM mode systems are discussed.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate the simulation and fabrication of an all-fiber orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode converter capable of generating first- to fourth-order modes simultaneously, which is realized by inscribing a cascaded preset-twist long-period fiber grating (CPT-LPFG) in a six-mode fiber utilizing a CO 2 laser. A new segmented Runge–Kutta method is proposed to simulate the preset-twist long-period fiber gratings. By calculating the twist angle and relative coupling coefficient for each pitch and then solving the coupled mode equations utilizing the Runge–Kutta algorithm. The simulation illustrates that the preset-twist method significantly improves the coupling coefficient of higher-order modes, thereby reducing coupling difficulty. In the experiment, by twisting the fiber at an angle of 1080° and fabricating cascaded gratings with periods of 745 μm, 310 μm, 204 μm, and 146 μm, it is feasible to generate first- to fourth-order OAM modes simultaneously, at wavelengths of 1635 nm, 1548 nm, 1460 nm, and 1334 nm, respectively. The insertion loss is less than 1 dB, and the mode purity is over 90 %. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that first- to fourth-order OAM modes are simultaneously generated utilizing a single long-period fiber grating.

Abstract:We propose an approach to efficiently generate and multiplex optical orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes in a fiber with a ring refractive index profile by using multiple coherent inputs from a Gaussian mode. By controlling the phase relationship of the multiple inputs, one can selectively generate OAM modes of different states l. By controlling both the amplitude and phase of the multiple inputs, multiple OAM modes can be generated simultaneously without additional loss coming from multiplexing. We show, by simulation, the generation of OAM modes (OAM state [l] < 3) with mode purity greater than 99%. The power loss of generating and multiplexing seven modes is about 35%. A transmitter for an OAM-based mode-division multiplexing system is proposed based on the discrete Fourier transform between the data carried by the multiple inputs and the data carried by the OAM modes. The experimental implementation of the proposed approach could be achieved by integrating ring fiber, multicore fiber, and photonic integrated circuit technology. (c) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) modes generation using tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) in a few-mode ring-core fiber (FM-RCF) is proposed and demonstrated. Theoretical and experimental investigations reveal that OAM beams can be switched among three topological charges (+/- 1,+/- 2, and +/- 3) at different corresponding oscillation wavelengths by single TFBG. In this work, OAM beams with linear polarization are produced by combining four degenerated vector modes. We firstly use TFBG to directly generate OAM beams with three different topological charges in FM-RCF, which provides an increased stability and compatibility for the manipulation and control of the OAM beams states in optical fibers.
Spin-entangled Orbital Angular Momentum Filter of Photons Based on a Chiral Long-Period Fiber Grating

Abstract:The orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light is particularly promising for multi-channel data transmission in optical fiber communications. In the implementation, one of the impediments is the lack of an effective all-fiber method to demultiplex and filter OAM modes. To solve the problem, by utilizing the inherent spiral characteristics of a chiral long-period fiber grating (CLPG), we propose and demonstrate experimentally a CLPG-based scheme for filtering spin-entangled OAM of photons. We unveil theoretically and verify experimentally that the co-handed OAM with the same chirality of helical phase wavefront as CLPG couples to higher-order cladding modes and suffers loss, while the cross-handed OAM with the opposite chirality freely passes in CLPG. Meanwhile, by combining its grating characteristics, CLPG can realize the filtering and detection of a spin-entangled OAM with arbitrary order and chirality without exerting extra loss for other OAM. Our work has great potential in analyzing and manipulating spin-entangled OAM, paving the way for the development of all-fiber OAM applications.

Abstract:A new kind of hybrid optical fiber for different orbital angular momentum (OAM) states generation is proposed and investigated by simulation. The hybrid fiber is composed of three main regions: the core, the cladding and the bow-tie-shaped stress-applying zones (SAZs). The SAZs are symmetrically distributed on both sides of the core and filled with piezoelectric material PZT-5H which would generate radial mechanical movement when subjected to an electric field. The strain applied by the SAZs introduces anisotropic variation of the material permittivity which affect the propagation of the guided modes along the fiber core. The OAM modes of |l|=1,2,3 can be generated by setting the appropriate electric potential applied in the SAZs. This fiber-based structure and electric control design enable the generation and adjustment of OAM states with the merits of accuracy, compactness and practicality, which would have potential application in OAM optical fiber communication systems and other systems utilizing OAM light.

Non-Hermitian Coupling of Orbital Angular Momentum Modes in Optical Waveguides

Abstract:We investigate the optical coupling of orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes in a multimode waveguide assisted by a lossy single-mode waveguide. By utilizing coupled mode theory, we show that the coupling coefficients between two OAM modes with opposite rotation directions become imaginary-valued in cylinder waveguides, which further gives rise to polarization-locked wave dynamics. Any injections with different polarizations finally evolve into linear polarization (LP) modes, as the output modes are synthetized by antisymmetric supermodes of two OAM modes. In addition, non-Hermitian asymmetric couplings are induced in elliptical waveguides, which stem from the interaction between synthetical gauge fields and dissipation. By increasing the ellipticity of wave -guides, the degree of asymmetric coupling increases, and the system experiences a phase transition, which can be reflected from propagation characteristics of OAM modes. The study provides a promising approach for control-ling modal coupling of OAM modes and may find potential applications in OAM generation and polarization conversion. Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a simple scheme for broadband generation of orbital angular momentum (OAM) using a fiber-based structure. A standard single-mode fiber (SMF) is stuck to a two-mode fiber (TMF) with specific offsets and tilt angles to realize high-order fiber mode conversion. By adjusting the polarization controllers implemented on the SMF and TWF accompanied with a polarizer filter, one can selectively obtain LP11 mode or OAM modes with l = ±1 at the output end of the TMF. We show the high-purity (extinction ratio >20 dB) generation of OAM modes within a wide range from 1480 to 1640 nm.

Abstract:Coupled-mode equations (CMEs) for double-helix chiral fiber long-period gratings (CLPGs) based on geometry-induced birefringence fibers are formulated by using the traditional coupled-mode theory. The derivation is based on an expansion in term of local modes, which is better to be understood and easier to be dealt with. The form of the CMEs is the same as that for the other kind of double-helix CLPGs based on stress-induced birefringence fibers, the common properties of double-helix CLPGs are thus proved. Simulated results on a spun elliptical core fiber are also given as an example to demonstrate the properties of the CLFGs.

Abstract:Attributed to helical spatial structures resembling orbital angular momentum (OAM) wavefronts, chiral fibers (CFs) manifest promising potential in manipulating OAM modes. However, conventional coupled-mode theory (CMT) constructed by the approximate circular-polarization basis, neglecting the effect of structure symmetry on the mode field, has reached its accuracy bottleneck in CF analysis. To solve this problem, a more insightful and experimentally-consistent high-order CMT (HOCMT) based on the angular symmetry chiral fiber (ASCF) model is first presented for analyzing the evolution of spin-entangled OAM modes in CFs with arbitrary core shapes. The theory is constructed by naturally extending the basis to OAM-constituted even and odd modes with structure-dependent high-order angular symmetry in the mode field. It is shown that the eigenmodes in ASCFs are elliptically polarized vector vortex states manipulated by structural parameters, with field distributions degenerating into boundary-related patterns. The connection between the photon OAM carried by the eigenmodes and the structural parameters is first established and visually represented by the high-order Poincar & eacute; sphere. Meanwhile, an experimentally modified coupled-mode equation is presented to address experimental deviations. Utilizing the HOCMT, we investigate the rules of ASCFs for manipulating arbitrary-order spin-entangled OAM modes. Finally, we experimentally demonstrate the accuracy and superiority of the HOCMT by analyzing and optimizing chiral long-period fiber gratings. Our work not only imparts intuitive insights into the effect of waveguide chirality on OAM modes but also provides a useful tool for analyzing and applying waveguides with chirality.
