Abstract:Supercontinuum generation (SCG) using a femtosecond Ti:Sapphire laser as a pump source and a nanofiber as a nonlinear element is investigated by numerical modeling. Many parameters are taken into account involving input pulse duration, peak power and diameter of the nanofiber. The results show that the narrower the input pulse is, the easier the SCG could be observed. The relation between the spectrum broadening and the diameter of nanofiber is not a direct proportion. According to our simulation, the dimension of the nanofiber plays an important role in effecting the dispersion and then the generation of supercontinuum.

Abstract:Supercontinuum generation has received extensive attention because of the innovation of high nonlinear fiber, which makes the supercontinuum system more simple, compact, and efficient. Nonlinear effects are enhanced greatly during the strong interaction between the light and matter in high nonlinear fiber, and the spectrum will be broadened effectively. In this paper, we demonstrate the supercontinuum generation in a photonic crystal fiber and a conventional tapered single-mode fiber pumped by the mode-locked Yb fiber laser. Through the experimental comparison of the supercontinuum spectrum between two kinds of the high nonlinear fibers, the spectral flatness, Raman perturbation, and dispersion wave radiation are discussed for studying the characteristics of supercontinuum generation. Finally, the octave supercontinuum-based both kinds of high nonlinear fibers could be achieved. In particular, the employment of tapered single-mode fiber is proven to be an appropriate candidate for supercontinuum generation and further application.

Abstract:In this paper we theoretically study the broadband mid-IR supercontinuum generation (SCG) in a lead-silicate microstructured fiber (the glass for simulation is SF57). The total dispersion of the fiber can be tailored by changing the core diameter of the fiber so that dispersion profiles with two zero dispersion wavelengths (ZDWs) can be obtained. Numerical simulations of the SCG process in a 4cm long SF57 fiber/fiber taper seeded by femto-second pulses at telecommunications wavelength of 1.55µm are presented. The results show that a fiber taper features a continuous shift of the longer zero dispersion wavelength. This extends the generated continuum to a longer wavelength region compared to fibers with fixed ZDWs. The phase-matching condition (PMC) is continuously modified in the fiber taper and the bandwidth of the generated dispersive waves (DWs) is significantly broadened.

Abstract:The guiding modes of a single mode fiber(@1550nm),when the cutoff frequency of the fiber is less than the frequency of the launching field,have been investigated.The fused tapered fiber has been fabricated by using the flame of a spirit lamp.If controlling the fiber dimension well during pulling process,the unique tapered fiber will have a multimode input end and a single mode output end for launching wavelength 632.8nm,which are demonstrated in our experiment.

Abstract:Formating mechanism of supercontinuum generation in highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber is studied. Using nonlinear polarization rotation technique, a stable femtosecond optical pulse with the central wavelength of 1556.0 nm as pumping source is obtained, and by delivering this pulse into a highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber, a supercontinuum with the 20 dB bandwith about the 140 nm has been obtained in experiment; Supercontinuum generation in different pump power was experimentally and numerically investigated. It is shown that supercontinuum has the different formatting mechanism with different pump power, and under various nonlinear effects, the more higher of the pump power; the more wide of the supercontinuum. It is found that qualitative agreement between the experiments and the simulations, the simulations shows that it exists an optimal fiber length for generation of the flat, broad supercontinuum. The SC band bandwidth will became smoother and broader by the frequency chirp.

Abstract:Improved long-wavelength transmission and supercontinuum (SC) generation is demonstrated by anti-reflective (AR) nanoimprinting and tapering of chalcogenide photonic crystal fibers (PCF). Using a SC source input spanning from 1-4.2 {\mu}m, the total transmission of a 15 {\mu}m core diameter PCF was improved from ~53 % to ~74 % by nanoimprinting of AR structures on both input- and output facets of the fiber. Through a combined effect of reduced reflection and red-shifting of the spectrum to 5 {\mu}m, the relative transmission of light >3.5 {\mu}m in the same fiber was increased by 60.2 %. Further extension of the spectrum to 8 {\mu}m was achieved using tapered fibers. The spectral broadening dynamics and output power was investigated using different taper parameters and pulse repetition rates.

Abstract:Physical mechanism of supercontinuum generation in photonic crystal fiber by femtosecond laser pulse has been investigated experimentally. In this study, we used the tunable output wavelength Ti: sapphire optical parametric amplifier as the pump source and the fiber spectrometer acquired the spectrogram of supercontinuum generation in photonic crystal fiber under different power and wavelength conditions, then we normalized the spectrograms and make a comparison of them. PCF supercontinuum differences affected by physical mechanisms were analyzed. We found that when increasing the incident pump pulse power, the spectral width will be gradually widened, there are more peaks, part of the energy will transfer in to the short-wave- length region; as long as it reaches a certain intensity, width of supercontinuum finally saturated, the shape of supercontinuum was also stabilized. As the incident power was settled at 300 milliwatt and the length of PCF was settled at 105 millimeter, experimental results show that width and shape of supercontinuum are affected by the wavelength of pump pulse, in the range of 760 to 840 nm, there appears more and more peaks with the increase of incident wavelength; at anomalous dispersion the spectrogram of supercontinuum generation will be more flat and more wider as the wavelength of pump pulse closer to zero point.

Abstract:An experimental study of supercontinuum generation in a photonic crystal fiber with zero dispersion wavelength 780?nm by femtosecond laser and its dependence factor is presented. Supercontinuum light with a spectrum more than one octave broad (500-1100?nm) was generated in a photonic crystalfiber by femtosecond pulses from a selfstarting, selfmode locked Ti:sapphire oscillator running at center wavelength of 810-840?nm. Different supercontinuums were generated by the 35?fs pulses with different power, central wavelength, prechirp, and the continuous noise in the femtosecond pulses. Some reasonable analysis result is obtained from the comparisons of the experimental results, and the mechanism of the supercontinuum generation is analyzed.

Abstract:We report on supercontinuum generation in individual fibers of a commercial Schott imaging fiber taper. Supercontinuum spectrum covering a wavelength range from about 500 nm to 1 mum was obtained. Unlike conventional approaches which use either a single micro-structured photonic crystal fiber (PCF) or an individual fiber or PCF taper, the availability of many fibers in an imaging taper can open new possibilities to independently and controllably generate supercontinuum arrays.

Abstract:Large-mode-area photonic crystal fiber is used to generate high power, high beam quality supercontinuum. Propagation and supercontinuum generation process of laser pulse in large-mode-area (LMA) photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is simulated by solving the general nonlinear Schrödinger equation (GNLSE) using the split-step Fourier method. Effects of the pump pulse parameters (peak power and chirp) and the length of photonic crystal fiber used on supercontinuum generation are particularly estimated. Nonlinear spectral broadening mechanism of laser pulse in large-mode-area photonic crystal fiber is discussed. The results show that the process of supercontinuum generation can be divided into three stages: initial broadening, dramatic broadening and saturation broadening. The spectrum width and efficiency can be achieved by the optimized length of LMA PCF to insure output of the generated supercontinuum at the dramatic broadening stage. The pump peak power and chirp have important impact on supercontinuum generation. When a small peak power pump is input, the spectrum broadens symmetrically. When the pump peak power increases, it brings little changes with the shorter wavelength component but broader of the longer wavelength component. The time-domain shape of the pulse exhibits concussion modulation as the effect of pulse breakup. When the pump chirp is positive, little influence is shown, except a shift of longer wavelength power by increasing the chirp. But the full width of the supercontinuum has little changes. While the pump chirp is negative and satisfy certain condition, the nonlinear is enhanced to facilitate the supercontinuum generation.

Abstract:A tapered silica photonic crystal fiber was designed and fabricated to generate more than one octave spanning supercontinuum (from 550 nm to 1400 nm at -30 dB level), by an input pulse of 40 fs 200 pJ directly from an Yb:fiber ring laser. The low pulse energy spectrum broadening are favorable to generate the high contrast f ceo signals with low noise. The f ceo signal with 40 dB signal-to-noise ratio was detected, which helps to build a compact real-world frequency comb.

Abstract:This paper presents the design of an index guided highly birefringent photonic crystal fiber which promises to yield very large birefringence ~3.33 X 10^(-2) at 1550 nm and ~1.75 X 10^(-2) at 1064 nm as well as large effective nonlinearity ~80 W^(-1)km^(-1). Optical supercontinuum generation in the proposed fiber using a 1064 nm pump source with peak power of 1kW has been also presented. Finite difference time domain method (FDTD) has been employed to examine the optical properties such as fiber birefringence, mode field, V-parameter, walk-off and optical nonlinearity, while the Split-step Fourier method is used to solve the nonlinear Schrodinger equation felicitating the study of supercontinuum generation. Simulation results indicate that horizontal input pulse yields superior continuum in comparison to that of the vertically polarized input. However, the broadening of the continuum is about 1450 nm in case of horizontally polarized input light whereas it is approximately 2350 nm for vertically polarized.

Abstract:Abstract This study proposes a photonic crystal fiber made of fused silica glass, with the core infiltrated with tetrachloroethylene (C 2 Cl 4 ) as a new source of supercontinuum (SC) spectrum. We studied numerically the guiding properties of the several different fiber structures in terms of characteristic dispersion, mode area, and attenuation of the fundamental mode. Based on the results, the structural geometries of three C 2 Cl 4 -core photonic crystal fibers were optimized in order to support the broadband SC generations. The first fiber structure with lattice constant 1.5 μm and filling factor 0.4 operates in all-normal dispersion. The SC with a broadened spectral bandwidth of 0.8–2 μm is generated by a pump pulse with a central wavelength of 1.56 μm, 90 fs duration and energy of 1.5 nJ. The second proposed structure, with lattice constant 4.0 μm and filling factor 0.45, performs an anomalous dispersion for wavelengths longer than 1.55 μm. With the same pump pulse as the first fiber, we obtained the coherence SC spectrum in an anomalous dispersion range with wavelength range from 1 to 2 μm. Meanwhile, the third selected fiber (lattice constant 1.5 μm, filling factor 0.55) has two zero dispersion wavelengths at 1.04 μm and 1.82 μm. The octave-spanning of the SC spectrum formed in this fiber was achieved in the wavelength range of 0.7–2.4 μm with an input pulse whose optical properties are 1.03 μm wavelength, 120 fs duration and energy of 2 nJ. Those fibers would be good candidates for all-fiber SC sources as cost-effective alternatives to glass core fibers.

Abstract:We report a broadband supercontinuum (SC) generation in chalcogenide (ChG) step-index tapered fibers pumped in the normal dispersion regime. The fibers consisting of As2S3 core and As38S62 cladding glasses were fabricated using the isolated stacked extrusion method. A homemade tapering platform allows us to accurately control the core diameters and transition region lengths of the tapered fibers. An SC generation spanning from 1.4 to 7.2 μm was achieved by pumping a 12-cm-long tapered fiber with femtosecond laser pulses at 3.25 μm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the broadest SC generation obtained experimentally in tapered fibers when pumped in the normal dispersion regime so far. The effects of waist diameter and transition region length of the tapered fiber on the SC spectral behavior were also investigated.

Abstract:We demonstrate a new guiding regime termed endlessly mono-radial, in the proposed annular core photonic crystal fiber (AC-PCF), whereby only modes of the fundamental radial order are supported by the fiber at all input wavelengths. This attribute is of high interest for applications that require the stable and broadband guiding of mono-radial (i.e. doughnut shaped) cylindrical vector beams and vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum. We further show that one can significantly tailor the chromatic dispersion and optical nonlinearities of the waveguide through proper optimization of the photonic crystal microstructured cladding. The analytical investigation of the remarkable modal properties of the AC-PCF is validated by full-vector simulations. As an example, we performed simulations of the nonlinear fiber propagation of short femtosecond pulses at 835 nm center wavelength and kilowatt-level peak power, which indicate that the AC-PCF represents a promising avenue to investigate the supercontinuum generation of optical vortex light. The proposed fiber design has potential applications in space-division multiplexing, optical sensing and super-resolution microscopy.

Abstract:A circular photonic crystal fiber infiltrated with benzene with different air-hole diameters is proposed as a new supercontinuum light source. Optical properties related to dispersion, effective mode area, nonlinear coefficient, and attenuation of the fundamental mode are investigated numerically. Two optimized structures are selected and verified against supercontinuum generation (SCG) in detail. The first structure (#F1) possesses all-normal dispersion, while the second (#F2) has a zero-dispersion wavelength. The possibility of coherent, octave-spanning SCG is proved by a 40 fs pulse, 1.064 μm wavelength, and 0.45 kW of power in-coupled into the core of #F1. Otherwise, injecting a 90 fs duration, 1.5 μm wavelength, and 0.555 kW peak power pump pulse into #F2 generates a broad SC spanning 0.76–4.23 μm. With the advantages of flat near-zero dispersion, high nonlinearity, low attenuation, and low input power used for SCG, the proposed fibers may lead to new low-cost all-fiber optical systems.

Abstract:We investigate the supercontinuum (SC) tailoring property by varying the transmission fiber length after the master oscillator power amplifier system. The conversion efficiency of the visible light band is effectively enhanced via tailoring the Raman extent of the injected 30 ps pulse into the nonlinear photonic crystal fiber (PCF). Experimentally, a 3.6 W all-fiber SC spanning from 414 nm to over 1750 nm (@20 dB) is accomplished by using a high duty cycle domestic PCF through precisely controlling the extent of Raman effect. The proposed method is instructive for the further realization of high power SC with an enhanced spectral intensity in the visible light band.

Abstract:An all-solid photonic bandgap fiber with the first bandgap from 450 to 900 nm was designed for visible supercontinuum generation. Sub-nanosecond pulses from a 532-nm microchip laser were launched into this fiber, and the supercontinuum from 532 to 900 nm was obtained. The bright single-mode visible light beam was observed, with the output power of 30 mW.
