Abstract:Metal-free graphene nanosheets (GNSs) were examined for use as air electrodes in a Li-air battery with a hybrid electrolyte. At 0.5 mA cm(-1), the GNSs showed a high discharge voltage that was near that of the 20 wt % Pt/carbon black. This was ascribed to the presence of sp(3) bonding associated with edge and defect sites in GNSs. Moreover, heat-treated GNSs not only provided a similar catalytic activity in reducing oxygen in the air, but also showed a much more-stable cycling performance than GNSs when used in a rechargeable Li-air battery. This improvement resulted from removal of adsorbed functional groups and from crystallization of the GNS surface into a graphitic structure on heat treatment.

Abstract:Graphite has been widely used as an anode material for commercial lithium-ion battery applications because of its excellent stability and low cost. However, graphite-based anodes need to improve the energy storage capacities to meet the increasing power demands of next-generation technologies. Here, we have developed a class of novel and flexible electrode materials that consist of N-doped graphene quantum dots supported by carbon nanotubes grown on carbon cloth (denoted as CC/CNT@N-GQD). Such architecture synergistically combines the advantages of three dimensions/one dimension substrates and zero dimension N-GQDs. It greatly improves the electron/ion transport kinetics of N-GQDs, resulting in attractive electrochemical performance in terms of high reversible capacity and excellent rate capability. Moreover, the annealing temperature plays an important role in the control of N-doping types of CC/CNT@N-GQD. CC/CNT@N-GQD anodes annealed at 500 degrees C have a high content of pyridinic N, exhibiting a very excellent rate capability and cycling stability, as exemplified by a capacity of 2.88 mAh cm(-2) at 4 mA cm(-2) and a reversible capacity of 3.63 mAh cm(-2) after 150 cycles at 0.19 mA cm(-2). Abstract:A hybrid Li-air battery uses a protected lithium anode and a porous air cathode in an aqueous electrolyte, based on a 4-e oxygen reduction reaction/oxygen evolution reaction (ORR/OER). It avoids the insoluble and insulating Li2O2 product in a typical nonaqueous Li-air battery, and it owns unique advantages. A bifunctional cathode catalyst is crucial to battery performance. Here, we synthesize an ultrathin N-doped graphene-encapsulated nanosphere Co-Ni alloy (Co-Ni@NG). It has hierarchical architecture consisting of a uniform Co-Ni nanoalloy coated with a thin layer of N-doped graphene, showing high activity, high stability, and lower overpotential between the ORR and OER (0.55 V between onset potentials). It exhibited a discharge/charge voltage gap of 0.55 V at a current density of 1.4 mA cm(-2), which is much smaller than the commercial Pt/C catalyst. It delivered an energy density of 3158 Wh kg(-1) and a power density as high as 134.2 W m(-2) at a current density of 7 mA cm(-2). The graphene shells protect the alloy catalyst and improve the durability of the catalyst. One hundred cycles were demonstrated without significant deterioration. It was testified as a promising energy storage system with high energy density, efficiency, reliability, and durability.

Abstract:Nonaqueous lithium-oxygen battery with nitrogen-doped graphene nanosheets (N-GNSs) as cathode materials delivered a discharge capacity of 11660mAhg−1, which is about 40% higher than that with the pristine graphene nanosheets (GNSs). The electrocatalytic activity of N-GNSs for oxygen reduction in the nonaqueous electrolyte is 2.5 times as that of GNSs. The excellent electrochemical performance of N-GNSs is attributed to the defects and functional groups as active sites introduced by nitrogen doping.

Abstract:Dual-ion batteries (DIBs) with Co/Ni-free cathodes especially graphite cathodes are very attractive energy storage systems in the long run because of the cost effectiveness and sustainability. However, graphite cathodes severely suffer from poor structural stability during anions storage at high potentials owing to the oxidative decomposition of electrolytes and volume expansion. This work proposes an artificial cathode/electrolyte interphase (CEI) strategy by implanting polyphosphoric acid (PPA) nanofilms tightly on natural graphite (NG) particles via interfacial hydrogen bonding. The electrochemical results show that the PPA-modified graphite cathodes possess enhanced charge-discharge reversibility, accelerated electrode reaction kinetic, decreased resistance, decelerated self-discharge, and prolonged cycling life. Through post-analyses on the cycled graphite cathodes, the improved performance is mainly attributed to the PPA-based CEI, which effectively mitigates the electrolyte decomposition and protects the graphitic structure. More interestingly, the hydrogen bonding interactions between poly(vinyldifluoride) (PVDF) binder and PPA as validated through density functional theory calculations and practical experiments can increase the contact sites of PVDF chains on NG@PPA particles. Meanwhile, the cross-linking effect of PPA can enhance the mechanical strength of PVDF, thus the long life of NG@PPA cathode is also correlated with the improved mechanical stability of the entire electrode.

Abstract:Lithium air batteries (Li-air batteries) are advanced energy storage and conversion devices, which realize the reversible transport between chemical energy and electric energy by the electrochemical reaction between chemical reactants lithium (as anode) and oxygen (as cathode) [12]. Li-air batteries have ultrahigh theoretical specific energy (11140 Wh·kg excluding oxygen and 3505 Wh·kg if oxygen included) [3-4]. Therefore, they have attracted the widespread concern of electric vehicle industry and the relevant researchers. However, they are still at the initial stage of development since many problems to be solved prior to the practical application, such as low specific energy, low round-trip efficiency, poor cycling life and rate capability [5-6]. An efficient and stable cathode catalyst is one of most promising strategies to improve the performance of Li-air batteries [7]. In this work, nitrogen and sulfur doped graphene were synthesized with new strategy and used as the efficient electrocatalysts for cathode of Li-air batteries. In addition, cyclic voltammetry and rotating disk electrode (RDE) measurements were also conducted to demonstrate the kinetic mechanism of ORR/OER in aqueous and organic electrolytes. Many physicochemical techniques, such as TEM, AFM, XPS, Raman and FTIR, were employed to understand the catalytic performance of these catalysts.

Abstract:Metallic lithium (Li) is regarded as the ultimate anode for high-energy-density rechargeable batteries due to its highest theoretical capacity and most electronegative potential. However, there are serious challenges before practical application of Li metal batteries (e.g. Li-air batteries), including the dendritic Li formation and infinite variation of electrode dimension. Herein, nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) co-doping carbon paper (NS-CP) is synthesized and further modified with a graphite-based layer (GL) by pencil-drawing. The as-prepared GL modified NS-CP (GL/NS-CP) is applied to pre-store Li through the heating-infusion method and Li-GL/NS-CP electrode is obtained. Experimental and theoretical results have demonstrated that N, S co-doping can effectively enhance the lithiophilicity of CP to ensure the uniform Li deposition. In addition, GL presents excellent Li wettability to rapidly syphon molten Li. Moreover, abundant pores in GL/NS-CP can accommodate enough Li to alleviate electrode volume change and lower local current density to restrain Li dendrites. Compared with pure Li anode, Li-GL/NSCP electrode shows more stable voltage curves with lower overpotential (20 mV for 600 cycles). As a result, Li-air batteries with Li-GL/NS-CP anodes also exhibit the satisfying cycling life. These results have shed a new light on the development of Li anodes.

Abstract:Developing highly efficient air-breathing electrodes is of significant importance for various energy conversion technologies. In this work, we report the synthesis of free-standing, nitrogen (N)-doped vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (N-VA-CNTs) supported by graphene foam (GF), demonstrating excellent catalytic activity for oxygen electrochemical reactions. The presence and status of N is systematically analyzed; N-doped carbon flake fragments present on the walls of the CNTs are proposed to be responsible for the high electrocatalytic activity. A rechargeable Zn-air battery assembled from this N-VACNTs/GF hybrid electrode exhibits much higher power density than those of commercial Pt/C electrocatalysts. Zn-air batteries assembled from N-VA-CNTs/GF with high performance and long-term durability hold great potential in the practical application of free-standing, flexible, rechargeable metal-air batteries.

Abstract:In this study, N-doped graphene oxide-polypyrrole-silica (NGO-PPy-SiO2) composite was employed as a possible anode in Li-ion batteries. The chronoamperometric technique was employed to synthesize NGO, and within this study two samples were produced, one characterized by a high polypyrrle content (N1) and the other by a low polypyrrle content (N2). N2 has the maximum initial discharge capacity of 785 mAh/g at 0.1C, which is greater than N1's capacity of 501 mAh/g. The initial coulombic efficiency of the first cycle is around 72%, whereas the ICE of N2 is approximately 60%. N1 demonstrates outstanding cycling performance for 100 cycles at high rate (10 C) with maintain capacity as 100% and coulombic efficiency of 100%, as well as extremely stable capacity during the cycling. N2 has a maintain capacity of ≈ 79% and excellent coulombic efficiency, however the capacity during cycling is not as stable as N1.

Abstract:Freestanding nanoporous N-doped graphenewith encapsulated RuO2 nanoparticles is developed as a cathode for rechargeable Li-O-2 batteries. The stabilized metal oxide catalyst reduces charge overpotentials enabling high-efficiency rechargeable Li-O-2 batteries with a long cycling lifetime. Abstract:A facile strategy was designed for the fabrication of hybrid of Co3Sn2@Co nanoparticles (NPs) and nitrogen-doped graphene (NG) sheets through a hydrothermal synthesis, followed by annealing process. Core-shell architecture of Co3Sn2@Co pin on NG is designed for the dual encapsulation of Co3Sn2 with adaptable ensembles of Co and NG to address the structural and interfacial stability concerns facing tin-based anodes. In the resulted unique architecture of Co3Sn2@Co-NG hybrid, the sealed cobalt cover prevents the direct exposer of Sn with electrolyte because of encapsulated structure and keeps the structural and interfacial integrity of Co3Sn2. However, the elastically strong, flexible and conductive NG overcoat accommodates the volume changes and therefore brings the structural and electrical stabilization of Co3Sn2@Co NPs. As a result, Co3Sn2@Co-NG hybrid exhibits extraordinary reversible capacity of 1615 mAh/g at 250 mA/g after 100 cycles with excellent capacity retention of 102%. The hybrid bears superior rate capability with reversible capacity of 793.9 mAh/g at 2500 mA/g and Coulombic efficiency nearly 100%.
Chemically Bonded Phosphorus/Graphene Hybrid As a High-Performance Anode for Lithium- and Sodium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:We report a red phosphorus-graphene nanosheet (P-G) hybrid as an anode material for lithium- and sodium-ion batteries. The hybrid was synthesized through a facile ball milling method where graphene stacks are exfoliated into graphene nanosheets and hybridized with red phosphorus particles during the process. The graphene nanosheets function as the conductive matrix in the hybrid and P-O-C chemical bonds are found between phosphorus and carbon in the hybrid, both of which facilitate creating robust and intimate contact between the graphene nanosheets and phosphorus and thus preventing loss of electrical contact by phosphorus particles during cycling. Benefiting from this structure, the P-G hybrid anode in lithium ion battery exhibits a high initial specific capacity of 2517 mAh/g at a current density of 130 mA/g and excellent cycling stability at ambient temperature. Moreover, even at elevated temperature of 60 oC, the hybrid anode delivers a high initial capacity of 2362 mAh/g at a current density of 260 mA/g and exhibits much better capacity retention of 74% after 200 cycles than conventional phosphorus-carbon additive hybrid. Also, the hybrid, used as anode for sodium-ion battery, delivers a high reversible capacity of 2077 mAh/g with excellent cycling stability (1700 mAh/g after 60 cycles) and high Coulombic efficiency (>98%). Abstract:Free-standing N-doped graphene papers (NGP), generated by pyrolysis of polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride, were successfully used as binder-free electrodes for the state-of-the-art Li/polysulfide-catholyte batteries. They exhibited high specific capacities of approximately 1000 mA h g(-1) (based on S) after 100 cycles and coulombic efficiencies great than 98%, significantly better than undoped graphene paper (GP). These NGP were characterized with XRD, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, AFM, electron microscopy, and Raman and impedance spectroscopy before and after cycling. Spectroscopic evidence suggested stronger binding of sulfide to NGP relative to GP, and modelling results from DFT calculation, substantiated with experimental data, indicated that pyrrolic and pyridinic N atoms interacted more strongly with Li polysulfides than quaternary N atoms. Thus, more favorable partition of polysulfides between the electrode and the electrolyte and the corresponding effect on the morphology of the passivation layer were the causes of the beneficial effect of N doping.

Abstract:Li-O-2 batteries are a promising electrochemical energy-storage system with a sufficient energy density for all electric vehicles, with a one-charge driving distance comparable to conventional petrol cars. However, the practical implementations of Li-O-2 batteries face many scientific and technological challenges. Among these is the development of high-performance cathode materials that can provide high capacity, low charge/discharge overpotentials and stable cycling stability. Here, we report a nanoporous Ni cathode covered by N-doped graphene and self-grown catalyst for rechargeable Li-O-2 batteries. The novel hybrid cathode shows relatively low charge/discharge overpotentials, high volumetric capacity and long cycling lifetime, which may pave a new way for practical implementation of economic nanoporous metals as binder-free cathodes for high-performance Li-O-2 batteries.

Abstract:Room temperature sodium-ion batteries are of great interest for high-energy-density energy storage systems because of low-cost and natural abundance of sodium. Here, we report a novel phosphorus/graphene nanosheet hybrid as a high performance anode for sodium-ion batteries through facile ball milling of red phosphorus and graphene stacks. The graphene stacks are mechanically exfoliated to nanosheets that chemically bond with the surfaces of phosphorus particles. This chemical bonding can facilitate robust and intimate contact between phosphorus and graphene nanosheets, and the graphene at the particle surfaces can help maintain electrical contact and stabilize the solid electrolyte interphase upon the large volume change of phosphorus during cycling. As a result, the phosphorus/graphene nanosheet hybrid nanostructured anode delivers a high reversible capacity of 2077 mAh/g with excellent cycling stability (1700 mAh/g after 60 cycles) and high Coulombic efficiency (>98%). This simple synthesis approach and unique nanostructure can potentially be applied to other phosphorus-based alloy anode materials for sodium-ion batteries.
