Abstract:Nowadays, catalytic doping has been regarded as one of the most promising and effective methods to improve the sluggish kinetics of magnesium hydride (MgH2). Herein, we synthesized Ni/TiO2 nanocomposite with the particle sizes about 20 nm by an extremely facile solvothermal method. Then, the Ni/TiO2 nanocomposite was doped into MgH2 to enhance its reversible hydrogen storage properties. A remarkably enhancement of de/rehydrogenation kinetics of MgH2 can be achieved by doped with Ni/TiO2 nanocomposite, compared to that solely doped with Ni or TiO2 nanoparticles. The hydrogen desorption peak temperature of MgH2-Ni/TiO2 is 232 degrees C, which is 135.4 degrees C lower than that of ball-milled MgH2 (367.4 degrees C). Moreover, the MgH2-Ni/TiO2 can desorb 6.5 wt% H-2 within 7 min at 265 degrees C and absorb similar to 5 wt% H-2 within 10 min at 100 degrees C. In particular, the apparent activation energy of MgH2-Ni/TiO2 is obviously decreased from 160.5 kJ/mol (ball-milled MgH2) to 43.7 +/- 1.5 kJ/mol. Based on the analyses of microstructure evolution, it is proved that metallic Ni particles can react with Mg easily to form fine Mg2Ni particles after dehydrogenation, and the in-situ formed Mg2Ni will transform into Mg2NiH4 in the subsequent rehydrogenation process. The significantly improved hydrogen absorption/desorption properties of MgH2-Ni/TiO2 can be ascribed to the synergistic catalytic effect of reversible transformation of Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4 which act as "hydrogen pump", and the multiple valence titanium compounds (Ti4+/3+/2+) which promote the electrons transfer of MgH2/Mg. Abstract:In the present work, a Fe covered pure Mg ultrafine powder Mg@Fe- was prepared through electroless plating of Fe on the arc plasma evaporated Mg powder in a FeCl3 n-butyl alcohol solution. The phase components, microstructure and hydrogen sorption behaviors of the Mg@Fe composite powder were investigated using XRD, TEM and PCT techniques. TEM observations revealed that those ultrafine Mg particles were covered by nano alpha-Fe grains reduced by Mg during electroless plating. The hydrogenation enthalpy of the Mg@Fe composite is determined to be -78 kJ/mol H-2 based on PCT measurements. Meanwhile, the hydrogen absorption activation energy of Mg@Fe composite is reduced to 54.6 kJ/mol H-2 and the onset desorption temperature of hydrogenated Mg@Fe is lower down to 620 K when compared to those for pure Mg powder. The improved hydrogen sorption kinetic properties of Mg@Fe composite over pure Mg powder can be mainly attributed to the catalytic effects from nano alpha-Fe covered on the Mg ultrafine particles.

Abstract:In this work, pure nanostructured Mg2FeH6 is successfully synthesized by sintering of a mixture of 2Mg + Fe nanoparticles. The successful preparation of pure Mg2FeH6 can be attributed to the small particle sizes of Mg and Fe nanoparticles prepared by hydrogen plasma–metal reaction (HPMR), which benefits the synthesis. The hydrogen storage properties of Mg2FeH6 and the synthesis mechanism of the Mg–Fe–H system are studied. The sample desorbs 5.0 wt% of hydrogen rapidly in 6 min under an initial hydrogen pressure of ∼ 100 Pa at 623 K. The enthalpy and entropy of the reaction are deduced from the equilibrium plateau pressures of the desorption isotherms. The obtained Mg2FeH6 shows favorable hydrogen storage properties due to the specific nanostructure of the materials.

Abstract:Magnesium hydride (MgH2) has been considered as a promising hydrogen storage material for buildings that are powered by hydrogen energy, but its practical application is hampered by poor kinetics and unstable thermodynamics. Herein, we describe a feasible method for preparing FeNi nanoparticles dispersed on reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (FeNi/rGO), and we confirmed that excellent catalytic effects increased the hydrogen storage performance of MgH2. 5 wt% FeNi/rGO-modified MgH2 began to release hydrogen at 230 °C and liberated 6.5 wt% H2 within 10 min at 300 °C. As for the hydrogenation process, the dehydrogenated sample absorbed 5.4 wt% H2 within 20 min at 125 °C under a hydrogen pressure of 32 bar. More importantly, a hydrogen capacity of 6.9 wt% was maintained after 50 cycles without compromising the kinetics during each cycle. A unique catalytic mechanism promoted synergetic effects between the in situ-formed Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4, Fe, and rGO that efficiently promoted hydrogen dissociation and diffusion along the Mg/MgH2 interface, anchored the catalyst, and prevented MgH2 from aggregation and growth.

Abstract:Mg(BH4)2 occupies a large hydrogen storage capacity of 14.7 wt%, and has been widely recognized to be one of the potential candidates for hydrogen storage. In this work, 2D MXene Ti3C2 was introduced into Mg(BH4)2 by a facile ball-milling method in order to improve its dehydrogenation properties. After milling with Ti3C2, Mg(BH4)2–Ti3C2 composites exhibit a novel “layered cake” structure. Mg(BH4)2 with greatly reduced particle sizes are found to disperse uniformly on Ti3C2 layered structure. The initial dehydrogenation temperature of Mg(BH4)2 has been decreased to 124.6 °C with Ti3C2 additive and the hydrogen liberation process can be fully accomplished below 400 °C. Besides, more than 10.8 wt% H2 is able to be liberated from Mg(BH4)2–40Ti3C2 composite at 330 °C within 15 min, while pristine Mg(BH4)2 merely releases 5.3 wt% hydrogen. Moreover, the improved dehydrogenation kinetics can be retained during the subsequent second and third cycles. Detailed investigations reveal that not only Ti3C2 keeps Mg(BH4)2 particles from aggregation during de/rehydrogenation, but also the metallic Ti formed in-situ serves as the active sites to catalyze the decomposition of Mg(BH4)2 by destabilizing the B–H covalent bonds. This synergistic effect of size reduction and catalysis actually contributes to the greatly advanced hydrogen storage characteristics of Mg(BH4)2.
Excellent Catalysis of Mn3O4 Nanoparticles on the Hydrogen Storage Properties of MgH2: an Experimental and Theoretical Study

Abstract:Recently, transition metal oxides have been evidenced to be superior catalysts for improving the hydrogen desorption/absorption performance of MgH2. In this paper, Mn3O4 nanoparticles with a uniform size of around 10 nm were synthesized by a facile chemical method and then introduced to modify the hydrogen storage properties of MgH2. With the addition of 10 wt% Mn3O4 nanoparticles, the MgH2-Mn3O4 composite started to release hydrogen at 200 °C and approximately 6.8 wt% H2 could be released within 8 min at 300 °C. For absorption, the completely dehydrogenated sample took up 5.0 wt% H2 within 10 min under 3 MPa hydrogen even at 100 °C. Compared with pristine MgH2, the activation energy value of absorption for the MgH2 + 10 wt% Mn3O4 composite decreased from 72.5 ± 2.7 to 34.4 ± 0.9 kJ mol-1. The catalytic mechanism of Mn3O4 was also explored and discussed with solid evidence from X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) studies. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the Mg-H bonds were elongated and weakened with the doping of Mn3O4. In addition, a cycling test showed that the hydrogen storage capacity and reaction kinetics of MgH2-Mn3O4 could be favourably preserved in 20 cycles, indicative of promising applications as a solid-state hydrogen storage material in a future hydrogen society.
Superior De/hydrogenation Performances of MgH2 Catalyzed by 3D Flower-Like TiO2@C Nanostructures

Abstract:Magnesium hydride has been seen as a potential material for solid state hydrogen storage, but the kinetics and thermodynamics obstacles have hindered its development and application. Three-dimensional flower-like TiO2@C and TiO2 were synthesized as the catalyst for MgH2 system and great catalytic activities are acquired in the hydrogen sorption properties. Experiments also show that the flower-like TiO2@C is superior to flower-like TiO2 in improving the hydrogen storage properties of MgH2. The hydrogen desorption onset and peak temperatures of flower-like TiO2 doped MgH2 is reduced to 199.2 degrees C and 245.4 degrees C, while the primitive MgH2 starts to release hydrogen at 294.6 degrees C and the rapid dehydrogenation temperature is even as high as 362.6 degrees C. The onset and peak temperatures of flower-like TiO2@C doped MgH2 are further reduced to 180.3 degrees C and 233.0 degrees C. The flower-like TiO2 @C doped MgH2 composite can release 6.0 wt% hydrogen at 250 degrees C within 7 min, and 4.86 wt% hydrogen at 225 degrees C within 60 min, while flower-like TiO2 doped MgH2 can release 6.0 wt% hydrogen at 250 degrees C within 8 min, and 3.89 wt% hydrogen at 225 degrees C within 60 min. Hydrogen absorption kinetics is also improved dramatically. Moreover, compared with primitive MgH2 and the flower-like TiO2 doped MgH2, the activation energy of flower-like TiO2@C doped MgH2 is significantly decreased to 67.10 kJ/mol. All the improvement of hydrogen sorption properties can be ascribed to the flower-like structure and the two-phase coexistence of TiO2 and amorphous carbon. Such phase composition and unique structure are proved to be the critical factor to improve the hydrogen sorption properties of MgH2, which can be considered as the new prospect for improving the kinetics of light-metal hydrogen storage materials. Abstract:Pure Mg2FeH6 compounds with two different morphologies have been successfully synthesized directly by mechanical milling (MM) and sintering of a mixture of 2Mg+Fe nanoparticles under an H-2 atmosphere, respectively. The successful preparation of pure Mg2FeH6 can be attributed to the small particle sizes of Mg and Fe nanoparticles prepared by hydrogen plasma-metal reaction (HPMR), which provides shorter diffusion distance for hydrogen and the metals. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results show that the Mg2FeH6 synthesized by mechanical milling has larger particle size but smaller crystallite size compared with the Mg2FeH6 synthesized by sintering. The Mg2FeH6 synthesized by mechanical milling can desorb more than 4.5 mass% hydrogen in 10 min under an initial hydrogen pressure of 0.001 bar at 573 K. Compared with the Mg2FeH6 synthesized by sintering under the same conditions as the Mg2FeH6 synthesized by mechanical milling, it is suggested that decrease of crystallite size is beneficial for enhancing desorption property of Mg2FeH6. Facile Synthesized Fe Nanosheets As Superior Active Catalyst for Hydrogen Storage in MgH2

Abstract:Reversible hydrogen storage in MgH2 under mild conditions is a promising way for the realization of "Hydrogen Economy", in which the development of cheap and highly efficient catalysts is the major challenge. Herein, A two-dimensional layered Fe is prepared via a facile wet-chemical ball milling method and has been confirmed to greatly enhance the hydrogen storage performance of MgH2. Minor addition of 5 wt% Fe nanosheets to MgH2 decreases the onset desorption temperature to 182.1 degrees C and enables a quick release of 5.44 wt% H-2 within 10 min at 300 degrees C. Besides, the dehydrogenated sample takes up 6 wt% H-2 in 10 min under a hydrogen pressure of 3.2 MPa at 200 degrees C. With the doping of Fe nano sheets, the apparent activation energy of the dehydrogenation reaction for MgH2 is reduced to 40.7 +/- 1.0 kJ mol(-1). Further ab initio calculations reveal that the presence of Fe extends the Mg-H bond length and reduces its bond strength. We believe that this work would shed light on designing plain metal for catalysis in the area of hydrogen storage and other energy-related issues. (C) 2019 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Hydrogen storage in Mg2Fe(Ni)H6 nanowires synthesized from coarse-grained Mg and nano sized γ-Fe(Ni) precursors

Abstract:In this work, Mg2Fe(Ni)H6 was synthesized under relatively mild conditions using precursors of coarse-grained Mg powder and Fe(Ni) composite containing γ-Fe(Ni) nano particles prepared through arc plasma method. The microstructure, composition, phase components and the hydrogen storage properties of the Mg–Fe(Ni) composite were carefully investigated. It is observed that the Mg2Fe(Ni)H6 formed from the Mg–Fe(Ni) composite has a “tangled nanowire” morphology with the wire diameter of 100–240 nm. In contrast, a typical columnar morphology was observed for the Mg2FeH6 produced from hydrogenation of coarse-grained Mg and pure α-Fe nano particles. A promotion effect on the synthesis of Mg2FeH6 is found for the utilization of γ-Fe(Ni) precursor instead of pure α-Fe. Indeed, γ-Fe(Ni) has the same fcc lattice as Mg2FeH6, which may remarkably shorten the diffusion distance of Fe during the formation of Mg2FeH6 from MgH2 and Fe. Meantime, the existence of Ni in Fe would catalyze the hydrogenation and influence the growing of Mg2Fe(Ni)H6/γ-Fe(Ni) interface, leading to the formation of Mg2Fe(Ni)H6 tangled nanowires. For hydrogen release, the peak desorption temperature of Mg2Fe(Ni)H6 is 593 K, which is 22 K lower than that of the Mg2FeH6. The absorption and desorption enthalpies of Mg2Fe(Ni)H6 were measured to be −68.8 ± 3.0 and 69.2 ± 3.2 kJ/mol H2, respectively. The improvements in both hydrogen sorption kinetics and thermodynamics can be attributed to destabilization effect of Ni substitution for Fe in the Mg2FeH6.

Abstract:Introducing multicomponent nanoparticles can improve remarkably de/hydrogenation kinetic properties of MgH2. In this work, the original core-shell CoNi@C bimetallic nanoparticles were obtained via hydrothermal and calcination reduction technology. MgH2-8 wt% CoNi@C starts to dehydrogenate at 173 °C with the dehydrogenation capacity of 5.83 wt% within 1800 s at 275 °C. Moreover, the composite absorbs 4.83 wt% H2 within 1800 s at 100 °C with prominent advantage at low temperature. The notable improvement of hydrogen storage properties of MgH2 is attributed to the reversible phase transitions of Mg2Co/Mg2CoH5 and Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4, and the excellent thermal conductivity and confinement effect of the carbon shell. As a result, the apparent activation energy of dehydrogenation reaction reduces to 78.5 kJ/mol. This work extends the horizon of bimetallic nanoparticles with especial microstructure for enhancing the hydrogen storage properties of metal hydrides.

Hydrogen Storage Behaviors and Microstructure of MF3 (m=ti, Fe)-doped Magnesium Hydride

Abstract:MgH2+10%MF3 (M=Ti, Fe) (mass fraction) composites were prepared by ball-milling in hydrogen atmosphere, and their hydrogen storage behaviors and microstructure were investigated systematically. The results show that the hydriding and dehydriding kinetics of MgH2 are markedly improved by doping TiF3 and FeF3 fluorides. At 573 K, the two composites can absorb 5.67%-6.07% (mass fraction) hydrogen within 5 min under an initial hydrogen pressure of 3.5 MPa, and desorb 5.34%-6.02% hydrogen within 6 min. Furthermore, the composites can absorb hydrogen rapidly in moderate temperature range of 313-473 K. In comparison, TiF3-doped sample has a better hydriding-dehydriding kinetics than FeF3-doped sample. The microstructure analysis shows that some active particles including MgF2, TiH2 and Fe could be formed in the hydriding-dehydriding processes of the MF3-doped composites. From the Kissinger's plot, the apparent activation energies for the hydrogen desorption of the composites are estimated to be 74.1 kJ/mol for TiF3-doped composite and 77.6 kJ/mol for FeF3-doped composite, indicating MgH2 is significantly activated due to the catalytic effect of the doping of MF3.

Abstract:Magnesium hydride (MgH2) with high gravimetric hydrogen storage capacity is considered as one of the most potential hydrogen storage materials; however, its development has been plagued by the high operating temperature and slow kinetics. In this study, we have design and synthesize a core-shell Ni/Fe3O4@MIL additive to aid the (de)hydrogenation of MgH2/Mg system via the co-catalytic effect of in-situ formed Mg2NiH4/Mg2Ni and Fe. The initial dehydrogenation temperature significantly reduces from 613 K to 517 K, and the MgH2-Ni/Fe3O4@MIL composite can reabsorb 4.17 wt% H2 within 3600 s under 3.0 MPa H2 at 373 K. Remarkably, the dehydrogenation activation energy of the composite decreases by 61.77 kJ/mol compared to the pure MgH2 (159.71 kJ/mol). Moreover, the composite also shows good cycling stability without distinct capacity decay after cycling twenty times. Studies show that during dehydrogenation and hydrogenation processes, the Mg2NiH4/Mg2Ni act as catalysts to induce hydrogen desorption/absorption of MgH2/Mg. Meanwhile, the unique core-shell structure of the Ni/Fe3O4@MIL not only provides reaction sites, but also prevents the agglomeration of nanoparticles and maintains stable catalytic activity. This study provides a new idea for designing stable transition metal heterogeneous catalytic system to improve hydrogen storage performance of MgH2.

Synergistic Catalysis in Monodispersed Transition Metal Oxide Nanoparticles Anchored on Amorphous Carbon for Excellent Low-Temperature Dehydrogenation of Magnesium Hydride

Abstract:Magnesium hydride (MgH2) has been considered to be one of the most promising solid-state hydrogen storage materials owing to its high hydrogen capacities, excellent reversibility and abundant source. However, the high dehydrogenation energy barrier and poor kinetics embarrass the practical application of MgH2 in fuel cell. Doping nano-catalyst is deemed to be the most effective method to improve kinetics property of hydrogen storage materials, but the nanoparticles generally suffer from agglomeration and inactivation during the cycling hydrogen storage. Here we present a promising strategy to facilely prepare a high-efficiency transition metal oxide nano-catalyst, TiO2 nanoparticles, in which monodispersed single-crystal-like TiO2 nanoparticles are wrapped with amorphous carbon. The in-situ synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles/amorphous carbon catalyst exhibit superior catalytic effect on the dehydrogenation properties of MgH2. A significant reductions of hydrogen desorption temperature (163.5 degrees C) and activation energy (69.2 kJ mol(-1)) have been obtained for the TiO2 nanoparticles/amorphous carbon catalyzed MgH2, which can be fully rehydrogenated with a reversible capacity of about 6.5 wt% at 200 degrees C within 5 min, and then completely dehydrogenated at 275 degrees C within 10 min. It is demonstrated that such significantly improved hydrogen desorption properties can be attributed to the in-situ formation of TiO2 nanoparticles, amorphous carbon and multi-valance Ti species, which play the synergistically catalytic roles in the nano-catalyst. In particular, the presence of amorphous carbon in the catalyst can not only prevent the aggregation and growth of catalyst nanoparticles, but also dramatically reduce the desorption energy value of H in MgH2, according to the density functional theory calculation. This finding opens a new venue for the synthesis of monodispersed single-crystal-like TiO2 nanoparticles/amorphous carbon catalyst with high-activity, safety, low cost, and its practical application in MgH2 and other hydrogen storage systems. Abstract:Target improving the hydrogen sorption properties of Mg, core-shell structured Mg@TM (TM = Co, V) composites were synthesized via an approach combining arc plasma method and electroless plating. The core-shell structures with the MgH2 core and V or Co containing hydride shells for hydrogenated Mg TM particles were observed through HAADF-STEM and HRTEM techniques. The measured hydrogenation enthalpy (Delta H-abs = 70.02 kJ/mol H-2) and activation energy (E-a = 67.66 kJ/mol H-2) of the ternary Mg@Co@V composite were lower than those of binary composites and the pure Mg powder. In addition, the onset dehydrogenation temperature for the hydrogenated ternary composite measured from DSC was 323 degrees C, about 60 degrees C lower than that of pure MgH2. On one hand, these improved properties can be attributed to the core-shell structure which may introduce more contacts between catalysts and Mg, thus providing more nucleation sites for hydrogen sorption. On the other hand, the co-effect of Mg Co hydrides (Mg2CoH5&Mg3CoH5) acting as "hydrogen pump" and V2H accelerating the dissociation of H-2 might also contribute to the improved hydrogen sorption properties of Mg. Abstract:The Mg2FeH6 hydrogen storage metal hydride was successfully prepared by controlled hydriding combustion synthesis (CHCS) in a single process from Mg and Fe elemental powders in a hydrogen atmosphere. Several factors including the magnetic intensity, the compression pressure and the mixing technique have an influence on the microstructure, phase composition and transformation morphology, which contributes strongly to the observed experimental results which show an improvement in the dehydrogenation properties. As a result, the 2Mg+Fe composite can desorb as much as 6.75 mass% within 1000s due to the above synergy effect, especially the effect of a high magnetic field.

Abstract:In this work, core-shell structured Mg-MFx (M = V, Ni, La and Ce) nano-composites are prepared by using arc plasma method. The particle size distribution, phase components, microstructures, hydrogen sorption properties of these composites and hydrolysis properties of their corresponding hydrogenated powders are carefully investigated. It is shown that the addition of MFx through arc plasma method can improve both the hydrogen absorption kinetics of Mg and the hydrolysis properties of corresponding hydrogenated powders. Among them, the Mg-NiF2 composite shows the best hydrogen absorption properties at relatively low temperatures, which can absorb 3.26 wt% of H-2 at 373 K in 2 h. Such rapid hydrogen absorption rate is mainly due to the formation of Mg2Ni and MgF2 on Mg particles during arc evaporation and condensation. In contrast, measurements also show that the hydrogenated Mg-VF3 composite has the lowest peak desorption temperature and the fastest hydrolysis rate among all the hydrogenated Mg-MFx composites. The less agglomeration tendency of Mg particles and VO2 covered on MgH2 particles account for the reduced hydrogen desorption temperature and enhanced hydrolysis rate. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Significantly Enhanced Hydrogen Desorption Properties of Mg(AlH4)2 Nanoparticles Synthesized Using Solvent Free Strategy

Abstract:Mg（AlH 4 ） 2 nanoparticles with a particle size less than 10 nm have been successfully synthesized by mechanochemical method using LiAlH 4 and MgCl 2 as raw materials together with Li Cl buffering additive. In comparison to Mg（AlH 4 ） 2 microparticles, Mg（AlH 4 ） 2 nanoparticles exhibit a faster hydrogen desorption kinetics and lower desorption temperature. The hydrogen desorption temperatures of the first and second dehydrogenation steps are 80 and 220 °C for the Mg（AlH 4 ） 2 nanoparticles, which are about 65 and 60 °C, respectively, lower than those of Mg（AlH 4 ） 2 microparticles. The decomposition activation energy is reduced from 135 k J/mol for Mg（AlH 4 ） 2 microparticles to 105.3 k J/mol for Mg（AlH 4 ） 2 nanoparticles. It is proposed that the shortened diffusion distance and enhanced diffusivity of Mg（AlH 4 ） 2 /MgH 2 nanoparticles provide an energy destabilization for lowering the dehydrogenation temperature, and thus being the key factor for promoting the hydrogen desorption kinetics. More importantly, it is demonstrated that the dehydrided nano MgH 2 hydride with a particle size below 10 nm can be formed after rehydrogenation process, resulting in the good cycling hydrogen desorption performance of nano MgH 2 .
