Abstract:In this work, one-dimensional (1D) and heavily doped Zn1−xCoxO (x = 0.05, 0.1, 0.15 and 0.2) nanorods (NRs) were successfully fabricated by a new solvothermal method. Such a Zn1−xCoxO nanorod exhibits a hexagonal prism-like microcrystal with a pyramidal top. Analyses from transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) indicated that Zn1−xCoxO NRs possess perfect single crystal wurtzite structures. The influence of Co doping on the structural, optical and magnetic properties of NRs was investigated in detail. It was verified that Co was successfully doped into the ZnO wurtzite lattice structure by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The Zn1−xCoxO NRs show an obvious blue–green emission except for the weak UV emission. The corresponding luminescence mechanism was discussed, and the environment of cobalt in the ZnO wurtzite lattice was also identified through UV-vis spectroscopy. In addition, the magnetic hysteresis (M–H) curves demonstrated that the Zn1−xCoxO NRs possess obvious ferromagnetic characteristics at room temperature. These Zn1−xCoxO NRs are suggested to have potential applications in spintronic, field emission and optoelectronic devices, etc.
Enhanced Field Emission Performance of ZnO Nanorods by Two Alternative Approaches

Abstract:Standard ZnO nanorods with a diameter of ∼150 nm show poor field emission performance. In an attempt to dramatically improve the field emission properties, we developed two alternative methods: The first one is to decrease the tip radius of nanorods down to ∼5 nm. The second one is to decorate the nanorods by small metal particles. By either of these two approaches, we can obtain excellent field emission performances, typically turn-on field (the electric field at which the current density reaches 10 μA/cm2) as small as 2 V/μm and current density as large as 1 mA/cm2 can be readily achieved. The physical essence of the excellent performances is the geometrically enhanced local field near the tip of the nanorods and the lowered work function of ZnO nanorods by the donation of electrons from the nanoparticles.

Abstract:To optimize the field emission behavior of the ZnO nanorods, postthermal annealing in different ambience was conducted. The field emission properties of the ZnO nanorods are considerably improved after annealing in oxygen and getting worse when annealing in air or ammonia. Photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopy were employed to elucidate the reason for such a significant improvement of the field emission when annealing in oxygen. Those detailed analyses suggested that oxygen annealing can reduce the oxygen vacancy concentration, improve the crystal quality, lower the work function, and increase the conductivity of the ZnO nanorods. Our work is important for applications of ZnO nanorods as a promising candidate in flat panel displays and high brightness electron sources.
Surface Coating Effect on Field Emission Performance of Zno Nanowires

Abstract:Surface coating effect on field emission performance of ZnO nanowires was studied by zinc surface coating. Coating time was found to play an important role in determining the field emission properties. 3 s and 5 s coating enhanced the field emission properties considerably, with lower turn-on field and larger electron emission current density. Prolonging the coating time to 10 s deteriorated the field emission properties of ZnO nanowires. Surface morphology change and green emission in photoluminescence related surface state were found to be responsible for such improvement. Our results provide an innovative approach to improve the field emission properties of ZnO nanowires for development of vacuum nanoelectronic devices.

Abstract:An extremely simple method has been successfully employed to prepare ZnO nanorods.ZnO nanorods with the diameter of about 100nm are prepared by hydrothermal growth in solutions of ammonia and zinc chloride,and the field emission properties are tested.The low values of turn-on field and threshold field are 2.7V/μm and 4.95V/μm,respectively,which are achieved from these nanorods.A high field enhancement factor of 5390 is due to the hierarchical structure of ZnO nanorods.The morphology and the composition of ZnO nanorods are characterized by SEM and EDS.

Abstract:Bifunctional magnetic–optical ZnO-γ-Fe2O3 hybrid nanomaterials have been synthesized via a layer-by-layer assembly technique on ZnO nanorod templates. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscope, field emission scanning electron microscope, high-resolution transmission electron microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy have been used to characterize the as-synthesized products. The photoluminescence spectra indicate that ZnO-γ-Fe2O3 hybrid nanomaterials exhibit enhanced UV emission and passivated defect emission. The magnetic property investigation reveals that ZnO-γ-Fe2O3 hybrid nanomaterials exhibit a superparamagnetic behavior.

Abstract:ZnO nanowire field emitters have great applications in vacuum microelectronic devices. Surface coating is an effective approach which can enhance field emission properties of field emitters. In this study, titanium nitride layer was coated on ZnO nanowires. The field emission properties were studied in situ using a nanoprobe technique. It is found that the TiN coating lowers the turn-on field and increase the emission current. We attribute the enhanced field emission to the decreased work function after coating.

Abstract:FeS2-sensitized ZnO@ZnS nanorod arrays are fabricated by a two-step solution immersion and a subsequent sulfurization. The material properties including structure, morphology, and photoluminescence are investigated by a variety of characterization methods. As compared with ZnO@ZnS core/shell structure, FeS2-sensitized ZnO@ZnS nanorod arrays show improved optical absorption property with the extension of the absorption edge into the range of visible light. The photoresponse performance of FeS2-sensitized Zno@ZnS is also enhanced as the photocurrent density at 1.0 V is dozens of times larger than that of ZnO@ZnS nanorods. The cause for the difference in such material properties of these two materials is discussed. In this work, a new method for sensitizing wide bandgap ZnO@ZnS nanorod arrays with improved light response performance is presented.

Abstract:Pristine ZnO nanorods were synthesized by hydrothermal method. The samples have a single phase nature with wurtzite structure and no other impurity phases were detected. The presence of OH groups on the as-grown samples surface was confirmed. After vacuum annealing and H2O2 solution treatment, the surface states and oxygen vacancies were modified in ZnO nanorods, resulting in suppressing the visible emission band and reducing the room temperature ferromagnetism (RTFM). Experimental results suggest that OH groups could be responsible for the strong broad yellow emission band and RTFM for as-grown ZnO nanorods. Green emission bands in vacuum annealed and H2O2-solution-treated samples could be attributed to singly ionized oxygen vacancy (V-0(+)). A plausible explanation for the observed weak RTFM is presented in terms of V-0(+) for the annealed sample, whereas V-0(+) and residual OH groups for H2O2-solution-treated samples. Aligned ZnO Nanorods with Tunable Size and Field Emission on Native Si Substrate Achieved Via Simple Electrodeposition

Abstract:Large-scale arrays of aligned ZnO hexagonal nanorods with planar ends have been achieved on a bare native n-type (100) Si substrate via a simple electrochemical deposition in Zn(NH3)(4)(NO3)(2) solution with a pure Zn sheet as the anode without using any catalysts, additives, and additional seed crystals. The ZnO hexagonal nanorods grow from the single-crystal seeds self-formed in the initial stage of the electrochemical deposition. The diameters and the lengths of the ZnO nanorods can be tailored by adjusting the electrolyte concentration and the electrodeposition duration. Field-emission measurements show that the ZnO nanorods with smaller diameters exhibit lower turn-on field and higher current density. The well-aligned ZnO hexagonal nanorods (oil Si substrate) with tunable size and field emission performance may have potentials in the future of nanotechnology.

Abstract:Near-band-edge emission in photoluminescence of ZnO nanowires was found to be significantly improved after plasma treatment. The ratio of ultraviolet emission peak intensity before and after plasma treatment is as high as 3.5. Field emission properties were considerably enhanced after plasma treatment as well. Current emission density has been increased two orders of magnitude under the same electric field. Passivation of surface states and surface morphology change were found to be responsible for such an effective improvement. Our results suggest that the plasma treatment method is effective in enhancing both the near-band-edge emission in photoluminescence and field electron emission performance from ZnO nanowires.

Abstract:By simply controlling atmosphere, rods, tetraleg-rods, and arrays of ZnO nanostructures have been fabricated respectively through pure zinc powder evaporation without catalyst at temperature of 650 - 700 degrees C. Investigations through HRTEM and XRD showed that the growth of the synthesized ZnO nanostructures was controlled by vapor-solid mechanism. Field emission measurements revealed that all of the structures, owing to their very low turn-on voltage, sufficient emission current and proper linearity of 1/V - Ln(l/V2), are likely to be potential candidates as a field emitter. The results also indicated that field emission properties are relative to morphology and size of the tips of ZnO nanostructures, and the nanorods with sharp tips possess the first-class FE property.

Abstract:Vertically well-aligned single crystal ZnO nanorod arrays were synthesized and enhanced field electron emission was achieved with hafnium, nitride (HfNx) coating under proper sputtering condition. HfNx films with various composition have been coated on ZnO nanorod arrays using a reactive direct current (DC) magnetron sputtering system. Morphology and crystal configuration of the ZnO nanorod arrays were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The field emission properties of the coated and uncoated ZnO nanorod arrays were characterized. The as-grown ZnO nanorod arrays showed a turn-on electric field of 6.60 V mu m(-1) at a current density of 10 mu A cm(-2) and an emission current density of 1 mA cm(-2) under the field of 9.32 V mu m(-1) While the turn-on electric field of the coated ZnO nanorod arrays sharply decreased to 2.42 V mu m(-1) an emission current density of 1 mA cm(2) under the field of only 4.30 V mu m(-1) can be obtained. Abstract:ZnO nanorods are successfully synthesized by annealing the precursors in argon with the chemical precipitation method. The structural and optical properties of ZnO nanorods are investigated. As annealing temperature increases, the intensity of the green emission increases while the intensity of the yellow emission decreases. The result suggests that the green emission depends strongly on the annealing temperature.

Abstract:Unoriented ZnO nanowires are fabricated either on the surface of silicon wafer or at the tip of needle-like tungsten by vapor-phase deposition.Both the plane field emission and tip field emission of ZnO nanowires are studied using a field emission microscope.The results show that for unoriented ZnO nanowire thin films,the electric field intensities corresponding to the turn-on voltage and threshold voltage of field emission are 4.7 and 7.6V/μm,which are much lower than those of aligned nanowire arrays.The enhancement of the field emission ability is attributed to the fact that the field-induced screening effect can be effectively avoided due to the widely spaced intervals that exist between the unoriented nanowires.The field emission of the tungsten tip also can be effectively improved by assembling ZnO nanowires on the tip,which presents a potential application of ZnO nanowire on the probe of electron microscopes with ultrahigh resolution.
Size-Dependent Surface Effects on the Photoluminescence in Zno Nanorods

Abstract:One-dimensional semiconductor nanostructures are expected to show significant surface effects, which results in remarkable modification of the optical properties. In this work, an experimental study of surface effects on the photoluminescence (PL) of ZnO nanorods with different sizes is reported. A thin shell layer of Al(2)O(3) is used to passivate the nanorods' surface, which allows one to compare the PL spectra before and after dielectric coating. It is found that strong surface exciton recombination is present in ZnO nanorods with average diameter as large as similar to 500 nm. Coating the nanorods by Al(2)O(3) significantly reduces the surface state-related emissions, indicating that surface passivation rather than surface band-bending mechanism dominates. We also provide evidence that the long controversial 3.31 eV emission in ZnO is not related to surface states but a free-to-bound transition involving an unknown acceptor level of similar to 125 meV. In the visible spectral region, an orange emission around 2.1 eV together with the normal green emission is observed in the thick nanorods. The little change in intensity after Al(2)O(3) coating allows us to conclude that the visible emissions are unlikely from the surface. Based on a DAP-like transition model, we are able to interpret the blue shift of the orange emission with increasing temperature and attribute the emission to zinc vacancy defects.

Abstract:Quasi-aligned (Zn,Cd)O nanorods with highly faceted morphology were synthesized by a simple catalyst-free thermal evaporation method. The crystal structure and optical properties of the as-synthesized nanorods were thoroughly investigated.-The results indicate that the (Zn,Cd)O nanorods are single crystals of wurtzite structure, having 12 side planes, namely, {01 (1) over bar0} and {11 (2) over bar0} planes. The presence of Cd is essential for obtaining these highly faceted nanorods. Room-temperature photoluminescence measurements indicated that the green emission of the products was attributed to both the surface-related defects and oxygen vacancies. These highly faceted nanorods possess significantly large surface-to-volume ratios and would be applicable in the fields of surface chemistry, photonics, and catalysis.

Abstract:Doping with noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) is an effective method to tune the photoluminescence (PL) properties of semiconductor materials. The mechanism is widely attributed to the localized surface-plasmon-resonance (SPR) effect of the metal NPs, while the contribution of potential barrier at the interface between metal and semiconductor is less discussed. Taking ZnO nanorods on fused silica substrates as a model system, we present a facile low-temperature fabrication method to derive Ag metal NPs coated ZnO nanorods. Great enhancement of the near-band-edge (NBE) ultraviolet emission of the ZnO nanorods was achieved by the surface decoration with Ag NPs, accompanied with a decrement of deep-level (DL) emission intensity. Since, the Ag NPs are active even at ambient conditions, spontaneous changes in PL properties have been observed with aging time. The influence of oxidation state of Ag on the contacting potential and subsequently on the PL properties of ZnO nanorods were studied by employing a subsequent thermal annealing process. The role of contacting behavior and the varied potential barrier are comprehensively discussed. It was demonstrated that both the SPR effect and band bending effect can enhance the NBE emission and suppress the DL emission. In the Ag-decorated ZnO nanorods, the SPR effect is the main reason for PL enhancement of the metallic silver, while the potential barrier enhancement is the main reason for the oxidized silver.

Abstract:ZnO seed layers were deposited on silicon substrates by the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method. ZnO nanorod arrays with different orientation degrees were grown using the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method, and their field emission (FE) properties were studied. The ZnO seed layer with a thickness of approximately 450 nm exhibits a high c-axis orientation and possesses few defects. ZnO nanorods with similar lengths of approximately 22 mu m grow along the [0001] direction and contain a large number of oxygen vacancy defects. ZnO nanorods with a high orientation have the varying diameters from 160 to 230 nm and the areal density of approximately 2.6 x 10(8)/cm(2), while those with random orientation have a uniform diameter of approximately 130 nm and the areal density of approximately 5 x 10(7)/cm(2). The turn-on electrical field for the ZnO nanorod array with high orientation was 9.2 V/mu m, and the field enhancement factor was 1225, while that for the ZnO nanorod array with random orientation was 7.1 V/mu m, and the field enhancement factor was 1406. The better FE brightness distribution uniformity and the FE current density stability were obtained. The effect factors on the FE property have been discussed.

Abstract:Four kinds of new one-dimensional nanostructures, celery-shaped nanorods, needle-shaped nanorods, twist fold-shaped nanorods, and awl-shaped nanorods of ZnO, have been grown on single silicon substrates by an Au catalyst assisted thermal evaporation of ZnO and active carbon powders. The morphology and structure of the prepared nanorods are determined on the basis of field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). The photoluminescence spectra (PL) analysis noted that UV emission band is the band-to-band emission peak and the emission bands in the visible range are attributed to the oxygen vacancies, Zn interstitials, or impurities. The field-emission properties of four kinds of ZnO nanorods have been invested and the awl-shaped nanorods of ZnO have preferable characteristics due to the smallest emitter radius on the nanoscale in the tip in comparison with other nanorods. The growth mechanism of the ZnO nanorods can be explained on the basis of the vapor–liquid–solid (VLS) processes.
