Abstract:Behavior of impurities produced in a negative hydrogen ion source by back-streaming positive ions was studied using a collision cascade simulation code, ACAT (Atomic Collision in Amorphous Target). The mass of atoms and the surface binding energies cause the chromium emission from 316 stainless-steel larger than the atomic fraction of 316 stainless-steel for a proton energy below 500 eV. The produced impurities after being ionized in the source plasma strike the surface of the plasma grid to remove cesium (Cs) on the surface. Large mass impurity ions like molybdenum and copper used as the ion source wall material enhance removal of Cs on the surface. Coating the surface of ion source component with refractory metals will reduce the Cs consumption rate.

Abstract:The characteristics of the 852 nm cesium Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter with Ar-filled cesium cell under different signal powers are investigated. The transmittance spectra are measured by changing the input laser power from 0.05 to 10 mW (the irradiance from 12.03 to 2406.88 W/m2) and the buffer gas pressure from 1 to 10 torr. The spectra without the buffer gas are also measured. The results reveal the entirely different variations of the transmittance spectra for the cells with and without the buffer gas. For the cell without the buffer gas, the sidebands of the spectrum get higher and the bandwidth is broadened as the input power increases. However, for the cell with the buffer gas, the sidebands are suppressed and the bandwidth is reduced. A single-peak transmittance spectrum will be formed eventually. These phenomena are remarkable at relatively high pressures of Ar (5 and 10 torr), which may be very suitable for applications such as Faraday laser, optical frequency standard, laser frequency stabilization, and laser locking. The sidebands of the spectrum can also be used to restrict the high input laser power which may cause damage to the system.

Abstract:Near-infrared high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) is more difficult to develop as its molecule scattering echo signal has a narrower spectrum width and a weaker energy strength than that of the ultraviolet and visible HSRLs.As one of the key components of HSRL,the spectrum filter has significant influences on the retrieval accuracy of HSRLs.Based on the relationship between the spectral filter's signal transmittance and spectral discrimination ratio and the retrieval accuracy of the HSRL,the performances of two typical interference spectrum filters are modeled and simulated by analyzing the characteristics of lidar echo at 1064 nm.Results show that FabryPerot interference filter has moderately good performances when the divergence of incident beam is small.While the requirement for surface precision is fairly high and it is not easy to be processed and installed.Field-widened Michelson interferometer (FWMI) is insensitive to the divergence of incident beam and has a stronger ability to gathering the lidar echo.And the requirement for surface precision is relatively low.In practical application,it is more suitable for the application requirement of near-infrared HSRL.

Abstract:Quantitative measurements of atmospheric aerosol optical properties are required for studies of the Earth’s radiation budget and climate change. Taking advantage of the broad spectrum of the Cabannes-Brillouin scattering from atmospheric molecules, the high spectral resolution lidar (HSRL) technique employs a narrow spectral filter to reject the aerosol Mie scattering component in the lidar return signals. Therefore, an HSRL can directly measure the extinction and backscatter coefficient as well as the lidar ratio. Since the backscattering signal is proportional to 1/λ4, it presents high requirements for the spectral filter to build a near-infrared HSRL. The atomic/molecular absorption filters are limited by the wavelength and it is also challenging for Fabry-Perot interferometers (FPI) due to their small field of view(FOV). The field-widened Michelson interferometer, which has a large FOV, is considered to be a good candidate for the spectral filter of near-infrared HSRL. A polarized near-infrared HSRL instrument, which employs a field-widened Michelson interferometer as the spectral filter, is under development at the Zhejiang University (ZJU), China. In this paper, the methodology and design process of the instrument will be described in detail. The capability of the HSRL in determining the properties of the atmosphere will be addressed. The retrieval of the aerosol optical properties, such as extinction-to-backscatter ratio and aerosol depolarization ratio, will be presented. Sensitivity of the aerosol retrieval to errors in characterizing the spectral filter will also be investigated.

Abstract:25,27-Bis(1-hexyloxy)-calix[4]arene-26,28-crown-6 (HexylCalix[4]C6) was synthesized. A new macroporous silica-based composite material, HexylCalix[4]C6@SiO2, was prepared through impregnation and immobilization of HexylCalix[4]C6 into the SiO2-P particles. The adsorption of 17 species of typical metals onto HexylCalix[4]C6@SiO2 in the range of 0.3-5.0 M HNO3 was investigated. The material exhibited strong adsorption ability and excellent selectivity for Cs(I) over all the tested metals except for Rb(I) and Pd(II). The optimum HNO3 concentration and the adsorption mechanism of Cs(I) onto the material were discussed. The solubility of HexylCalix[4]C6@SiO2 in aqueous phase was evaluated by total organic carbon (TOC). The technical feasibility of application of Hexyl Calix[4]C6@SiO2 in Cs(I) separation was confirmed.

Abstract:Standard backscatter lidars encounter problems when solving the two unknowns (aerosol backscatter coefficient and extinction coefficient) from the only one recorded lidar equation. With the help of the high-spectral-resolution filter, high spectral resolution lidars (HSRLs) can provide unambiguous retrieval without critical assumptions. Spectral discrimination between scattering from molecules and aerosols or cloud particles is the basis of the HSRL technique, and several lidar approaches have been developed to obtain this discrimination. Iodine cell filter, which is a kind of atomic/molecular absorption filter, is robust, stable, and can achieve very good separation of aerosol Mie scattering from atmosphere molecular Cabannes scattering. However, absorption filters are lossy and gaseous absorption lines do not exist at many convenient laser wavelengths. Fabry-Perot interferometers are simple and can be tuned to any wavelength, but are limited by acceptance angle. Field-widened Michelson interferometer (FWMI) is considered to have the ability to overcome the deficiencies of the aforementioned filters as it can perform well at relatively large off-axis angles, is nearly lossless, and can be built to any wavelength. In this paper, the development process of an FWMI that is introduced to be the spectroscopic filter for a polarized near-infrared HSRL instrument will be present. The retrieval process of the aerosol optical properties, the design requirements with special focus on the selection of the free spectral range (FSR) of the FWMI, as well as the design result will be described in detail.

Abstract:We report a cesium Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF), of which the atom vapor cell is filled with argon as buffer gas. The result shows that, with the help of buffer gas, the sidebands of the FADOF are removed and a transmittance spectrum with one single peak is realized.

Abstract:We report the newest experimental results of Cs-D2 line 852 nm Faraday optical filters for wireless optical communication system. We measure the transmission spectrum of the Faraday optical filters with different temperature, magnetic field intensity, and with or without buffer gas. The Cs-852nm Faraday optical filters is based on atomic vapor cell, with the increase of magnetic field strength and the filling of buffer gas at a certain pressure. The bandwidth, transmittance and line shape of the transmission spectrum are changed obviously. The results can be used for free-space laser communications.

Abstract:This paper presents an analysis of the laser phase noise to amplitude noise conversion resulted from the absorption and dispersion properties of the resonant medium theoretically;under the effect of velocity selective optical pumping the absorption is enhanced near the resonant frequency,and the conversion from phase to amplitude noise is more effective,so we observe the Cs atomic D2 line Doppler-free absorption and noise spectrum experimentally without cross lines.Each 'M' in the noise spectrum corresponds to an atomic absorption line,and the middle dip of 'M' shape corresponds to the resonant frequency precisely.Noise spectrum can be used as a kind of high resolution spectrum to research the atomic energy level structure and study the absorption and dispersion of the atom,especially it can be used as a high sensitive method to detect phase noise of the light field.

Abstract:In this work, sidebands suppression brought by buffer gas argon (Ar) in cesium Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) at 852 nm is investigated. FADOF performances at different Ar pressures (0 torr, 1 torr, 5 torr and 10 torr) are compared, and a single-peak transmittance spectrum with peak transmittance up to 80% is achieved at the high Ar pressure. A detailed analysis shows that, this sidebands suppression comes from the depopulation enhancement by the buffer gas. This result can be generalized to other FADOFs with similar level structures such as the D2 lines of other alkali metal atoms.

Abstract:This paper presents both experimental and theoretical investigations into the spectroscopy of dilute cesium (Cs) atoms within a solid argon (Ar) matrix at cryogenic temperatures. This system is relevant for matrix isolation spectroscopy and in particular for recently proposed methods for investigating phenomena that extend beyond the standard model of particle physics. We record absorption spectra at various deposition temperatures and examine the evolution of these spectra post-deposition with respect to temperature changes. Taking advantage of Cs-Ar and Ar-Ar pairwise interaction potentials, we conduct a stability study of trapping sites, which indicates a preference for T$_{\rm d}$ (tetrahedral, 4 vacancies) and O$_{\rm h}$ (cubic, 6 vacancies) symmetries. By implementing a mean-field analysis of the long-range Cs(6s,6p)-Ar-Ar triple dipole interaction, combined with a temperature-dependent shift in zero point energy, we propose effective Cs(6s,6p)-Ar pairwise potentials. Upon integrating these pairwise potentials with spin-orbit coupling, we achieve a satisfactory agreement between the observed and simulated absorption line positions. The observed line broadening is reasonably well reproduced by a semi-classical thermal Monte Carlo approach based on Mulliken-type differences between excited and ground potential curves. Additionally, we develop a simple, first-order crystal field theory featuring only 6 interaction mode coordinates. It uses the reflection approximation and incorporates quantized (phonon) normal modes. This produces a narrow triplet structure but not the observed amount of splitting.

Abstract:We develop a three-level theoretical model for atomic optical filters based on optical anisotropy induced by the circularly polarized pump field. Calculative results are in good agreement with experimental results reported previously [Opt. Lett 27, 500 (2002)]. The filtering characteristics such as the functions of pump intensity, pump detuning, and cell temperature are studied, respectively. The theoretical analysis presented here is expected to be useful in investigating atomic optical filters and polarization spectroscopy. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We have investigated a cesium Faraday filter at 852nm in relatively weak and strong magnetic fields, theoretically and experimentally, With a cesium cell of 0.02m length in an axial magnetic field of 0.06T, the line-centre operation has been achieved. The calculated peak transmission reached 99% with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) bandwidth of only 3.9 GHz. The measured FWHM bandwidth of the filter is 3.29 GHz, which is in general agreement with the theoretical result.

Abstract:We mainly present the 728 nm laser spectroscopy and Faraday atomic filter of Cs atoms with 650 MHz linewidth and 2.6% transmission based on an electrodeless discharge vapor lamp, compared with Rb 728 nm laser spectroscopy. Accidentally, this remarkably strong Cs 728 nm transition from the 6F(7/2) state to the 5D(5/2) state is only about 2.5 GHz away from the Rb 728 nm transition of the future potential four-level active optical clock, once laser cooled and trapped from the 7S(1/2) state to the 5P(1/2) state, as we proposed previously. A Faraday atomic filter stabilized 728 nm laser using a Cs electrodeless discharge vapor lamp with a power of 10 mW will provide a frequency reference to evaluate the performance of the potential Rb four-level active optical clock at 728 nm with power less than 1 nW by 2.5 GHz heterodyne measurements.

Abstract:In an atomic fountain, atoms in motion can be spatially separated into discrete Zeeman sub-states by magnetically induced Stern-Gerlach effect. With resonant light pulses acting as a shutter, specific states are selected for subsequent experiments. Such separation-selection process in atomic optics is the analogue of a spatial filter in physical optics which selects and purifies the modes of light. This technique is demonstrated by injecting a pulsed current in a circular coil around a vertical atomic fountain, separating the pre-cooled Rubidium atoms by a distance of centimeters in between, and filtering each single sub-state with block pulses. The filtered atoms after the process is highly purified in the desired sub-state. The apparatus of the atomic spatial filter is adaptable in atomic optics and can be integrated into the high-vacuum chamber of an atomic fountain.

Abstract:The appropriate cesium adsorption on the converter (plasma grid) in the negative ion source is expected to lower surface work function, thus enhancing negative ion production and decreasing the ratio of co-extracted electrons. The cesium coverage process is important in understanding cesium dynamics and provides input parameters for simulation of cesium-wall interaction. The cesium coverage model based on Langmuir theory is established with analytical solution. Based on temperature-controlled quartz microbalance (QMB), experiments are carried out on different crystals under various cesium flux and surface temperatures, to simulate the actual cesium injection environment in negative ion sources. The experimental data are analyzed and compared with the fitting curves of cesium coverage theoretical model. The results show the influence of surface temperatures and materials on cesium adsorption, along with the sticking coefficients calculated.

How to Build an Optical Filter with an Atomic Vapor Cell

Abstract:The nature of atomic vapors, their natural alignment with interatomic transitions, and their ease of use make them highly suited for spectrally narrow-banded optical filters. Atomic filters come in two flavors: a filter based on the absorption of light by the Doppler broadened atomic vapor, i.e., a notch filter, and a bandpass filter based on the transmission of resonant light caused by the Faraday effect. The notch filter uses the absorption of resonant photons to filter out a small spectral band around the atomic transition. The off-resonant part of the spectrum is fully transmitted. Atomic vapors based on the Faraday effect allow for suppression of the detuned spectral fraction. Transmission of light originates from the magnetically induced rotation of linear polarized light close to an atomic resonance. This filter constellation allows selective acceptance of specific light frequencies. In this manuscript, we discuss these two types of filters and elucidate the specialties of atomic line filters. We also present a practical guide on building such filter setups from scratch and discuss an approach to achieve an almost perfect atomic spectrum backed by theoretical calculations.

Abstract:Several characteristics of the FADOF at 459 nm of cesium atoms were calculated. The results show that the Cs FADOF has proximately stable transmission, bandwidth and linear adjustable frequency within a certain range of cell temperature and magnetic field strength.

Abstract:The effects of the electromagnetically induced transparency and dispersion of a A-type three-level atomic system are experimentally measured with a vapour cell of Cs atoms. The steep dispersion at low absorption is observed. Thus a small group velocity for the probe beam is inferred from the measured dispersion curve.

Abstract:The background and diffraction theory of crystalline colloidal arrays (CCAs) are briefly reviewed. Crystalline colloidal arrays were fabricated by using silica particles and polystyrene (PS) particles for deep ultraviolet (UV) and visible regions, respectively. I used a modified Stober method to synthesize small (<100 nm) silica particles. The silica particles were surface functionalized with a strong acid, non-UV absorbing silane coupling agent. PS particles were also synthesized with emulsion polymerization method. These monodisperse, highly charged particles self-assemble into face-centered cubic CCAs that show Bragg diffraction of UV and visible light. The diffraction wavelength was 248 nm for silica CCA filter at normal incidence. The PS CCAs diffracted 518 nm and 580 nm light at normal incidence. These CCA filters were tested with UV/vis/NIR spectrophotometer and lasers. UV/vis/NIR extinction showed high rejection efficiency and narrow diffraction bands. 244 nm argon laser light was used to study the transmission, reflection and scattering of the silica CCA filter. Teflon Raman scattering measurement was also performed with 244 nm light and a silica CCA filter used as the Rayleigh rejection filter. The filter rejected 99.91% of the Rayleigh scattering light. We attempted to develop a Raman imaging spectrometer. Towards this affect, I attempted to do fluorescence imaging by using 514.5 argon laser light with PS visible filters. Spectra of fluorescence bands and fluorescence images were recorded.
