Abstract:Several characteristics of the FADOF at 459 nm of cesium atoms were calculated. The results show that the Cs FADOF has proximately stable transmission, bandwidth and linear adjustable frequency within a certain range of cell temperature and magnetic field strength.

Abstract:A 459 nm Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) working at the side wings of the cesium 6S1∕2 → 7P1∕2 transition with weak oscillator strength is achieved. The transmittance of the higher side wing reaches 98% at a temperature of 179°C and magnetic field above 323 G. The experimental results coincide with the theoretical predictions in 1982 and 1995, which were not realized in experiments for over three decades. Due to its high transmittance, high accuracy, and narrow linewidth, the 459 nm FADOF can be applied in underwater optical communications, the building of active optical clocks, and laser frequency stabilization in active optical clocks.

Abstract:We demonstrate a Cs FADOF (Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter) with a single transmission peak resonant with the 6S(1/2), F = 4 → 7P(3/2), F' = 3, 4, 5 transition at 455 nm. The filter achieves a single peak transmission of 86%. With the technique of saturated absorption spectra, we obtain the bandwidth of the single peak, which is 1.5 GHz. While most of other FADOFs operate at frequencies far from absorption, the filter we have realized can provide light exactly resonant with atomic transitions with a high transmission. We also find that, at a particular temperature, we can achieve a single transmission peak rather than many peaks far from absorption by changing the strength of magnetic field. This technique can also be applied to other alkali atoms.

Abstract:A narrow linewidth Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) with reflection configuration is achieved for the first time based on the cesium (Cs) ground state 6S1/2 to the excited state 6P3/2 transition at 852 nm. Compared with the conventional FADOF with transmission configuration, reflection-type FADOF can greatly improve the transmittance of optical filter under the same experimental parameters, because it allows signal light to go and return through the atomic vapor cell. In our experiment, peak transmittance at Cs 6S1/2 F = 4–6P3/2 transition is 81% for the reflection-type FADOF, and while 54% for the transmission-type FADOF when the temperature of Cs vapor cell and the axial magnetic field are 60 °C and 19 G. The idea of this reflection-type FADOF design has the potential to be applied to the FADOF operating between two excited states to obtain higher transmittance.

Abstract:We report a cesium Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF), of which the atom vapor cell is filled with argon as buffer gas. The result shows that, with the help of buffer gas, the sidebands of the FADOF are removed and a transmittance spectrum with one single peak is realized.

Abstract:As an ultra-narrow bandwidth optical filter with unique character of high efficiency, Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) has been focused on by both international and domestic researchers in recent years. In this thesis the theoretical and experimental studies on Cs 852 nm FADOF were done on the base of reviewing the domestic and international development. A qualitative analysis on the magnetic field and temperature of the two main factors was given and the best working conditions were obtained. Hereby experiment was planned and at last a small-scale device was made.

Abstract:In this work, a detailed theoretical analysis of 1529 nm ES-FADOF (excited state Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter) based on rubidium atoms pumped by 780 nm laser is introduced, where Zeeman splitting, Doppler broadening, and relaxation processes are considered. Experimental results are carefully compared with the derivation. The results prove that the optimal pumping frequency is affected by the working magnetic field. The population distribution among all hyperfine Zeeman sublevels under the optimal pumping frequency has also been obtained, which shows that Rb-85 atoms are the main contribution to the population. The peak transmittance above 90% is obtained, which is in accordance with the experiment. The calculation also shows that the asymmetric spectra observed in the experiment are caused by the unbalanced population distribution among Zeeman sublevels. This theoretical model can be used for all kinds of calculations for FADOF. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We realize a Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) operating on the 88 Sr (5s 2 ) 1 S 0 -(5s5p) 1 P 1 transition, utilizing a strontium hollow cathode lamp (HCL). At the magnetic field strength of 1460 G and the HCL discharge current of 22 mA, a single transmission peak with a maximum transmission of 28.8% is obtained. The dependence of transmission on magnetic field and HCL discharge current is qualitatively studied. This demonstration will be used to build a Faraday laser, which will be applied in the Sr optical clock.

Abstract:In this work, sidebands suppression brought by buffer gas argon (Ar) in cesium Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) at 852 nm is investigated. FADOF performances at different Ar pressures (0 torr, 1 torr, 5 torr and 10 torr) are compared, and a single-peak transmittance spectrum with peak transmittance up to 80% is achieved at the high Ar pressure. A detailed analysis shows that, this sidebands suppression comes from the depopulation enhancement by the buffer gas. This result can be generalized to other FADOFs with similar level structures such as the D2 lines of other alkali metal atoms.

Abstract:We propose a Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) based on a rare-earth ion doped crystal. We present theoretical analyses for the solid-state FADOF transmission. Our theoretical model predicts a maximum transmission efficiency of 71% and a double-peaked transmission spectrum with a bandwidth of 6 GHz under current experimental conditions. Our proposal may have important applications in optical communications.

Abstract:A Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) with a single transmission peak is achieved by using a buffer-gas (argon, 2 Torr)-filled rubidium cell. At room temperature, the transmission is 0.2% and the bandwidth of the transmission peak is 0.65 GHz. At a temperature of 63° C, the transmission rises to a maximum of 30.6%, with a bandwidth of 1.41 GHz. This FADOF may replace the use of interference filters or virtually imaged phased arrays in imaging modalities.

Abstract:Using a hollow-cathode lamp (HCL) to build a Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) is a new method to realize narrow linewidth optical filters. In contrast to other atomic optical filters based on saturated vapors, which work at a relatively high temperature to maintain the atomic density, the HCL device using sputtered particles can work at a much lower temperature. In this work, a rubidium HCL-based FADOF (HCL-FADOF) working at 780 nm is established and carefully tested. With 20 mm cathode length, the transmittance can reach 29% under 18 mA discharge current and 260 G magnetic field at room temperature, which is equivalent to the performance of a saturated vapor-based FADOF (VC-FADOF) at more than 60 ∘C. This work provides a direct comparison of the performance of the HCL-FADOF and the VC-FADOF, which is of great benefit to further studies of atomic filters at normal temperature.

Abstract:Taking advantages of ultra-narrow bandwidth and high noise rejection performance of the Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF), simultaneously with the coherent amplification of atomic stimulated emission, we propose a stimulated amplified Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (SAFADOF) at cesium 1470 nm. The SAFADOF is able to significantly amplify very weak laser signals and reject noise in order to obtain clean signals in strong background. We show that for a weak signal of 50 pW, the gain factor can be larger than 25000 (44 dB) within a bandwidth as narrow as 13 MHz. Having the ability to amplify weak signals with low background contribution, the SAFADOF finds outstanding potential applications in weak signal detections.

Abstract:Known as a unique optical filter, Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter has prior advantages to provide high transmission and high background noise rejection with excellent image quality. In this paper, we studied the temperature characteristics of Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter at Cs 852 nm transition. The transmitted spectrum is carefully measured under different Cs cell temperatures (39 degrees C-57 degrees C) and environment temperatures (23 degrees C-26 degrees C). The results could provide important reference for further research on Faraday laser, lidar remote sensing systems and imaging systems.

Abstract:Using laser cooling technology, we demonstrate an ultranarrow-bandwidth Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) which operates on the $5^{2}\text{S}_{1/2}$ ( $F = 2$ ) to $6^{2}\text{P}_{3/2}$ ( $F' = 3$ ) transition at 420 nm based on cold 87Rb atoms. The filter achieves a single 2.7(2) MHz passband at a peak transmission of 3.2%. It is the narrowest bandwidth FADOF known at present, as the influence of Doppler broadening on the bandwidth narrowing of FADOF is effectively overcome by cold atoms. This ultranarrow-bandwidth FADOF has a figure of merit (FOM) value of 11.85 GHz−1, which is seven times larger than the largest FOM achieved by thermal vapor atomic optical filter published to date. Furthermore, the scheme can be extended to almost all kinds of atomic optical filters and may find applications in active Faraday optical frequency standard and self-stabilizing laser.

Abstract:We demonstrate a Cs excited state Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (ESFADOF) operating at 728 nm using a novel pump method, by which the pump beam and the probe beam in the ESFADOF realized here have no a common energy level. Using this method, the ESFADOF achieves a transmission of 2.39% with a bandwidth of 22.52 MHz, which can be applied to both laser frequency stabilization and future four-level active optical clocks. Under the 455 nm laser pump, in addition to 52D5/2, other states such as 72S1/2, 72P3/2, 62P3/2, 62P1/2 and 52D3/2 have also been populated effectively. Meanwhile, multiple wavelength filters exploiting atomic transitions to these states can be realized.

Abstract:We have investigated a cesium Faraday filter at 852nm in relatively weak and strong magnetic fields, theoretically and experimentally, With a cesium cell of 0.02m length in an axial magnetic field of 0.06T, the line-centre operation has been achieved. The calculated peak transmission reached 99% with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) bandwidth of only 3.9 GHz. The measured FWHM bandwidth of the filter is 3.29 GHz, which is in general agreement with the theoretical result.

Abstract:SummaryWe achieve the stabilization of the laser power using a cesium Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF). We measured the transmission spectrum of the FADOF. In the transition line of 6s 2 S 1/2 F=4→6p 2 P 3/2 for cesium at the wavelength of 852 nm, when the laser frequency is constant, the transmission of FADOF increases rapidly and then decreases as the probe laser intensity increases. The negative correlation between FADOF transmission and laser intensity can be used to stabilize the laser power. Therefore, we tune the laser frequency to the cesium 6s 2 S 1/2 F=4→6p 2 P 3/2 transition line, then the power of the laser passing through the FADOF is expected to be stabilized. This work can be applied to the precision measurement field, such as atomic clocks, atomic gravimeters, atomic magnetometers, etc.

Abstract:As a new, to the best of our knowledge, alternative to the saturated vapor-cell-based Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF), the FADOF based on a hollow cathode lamp (HCL-FADOF) not only enables the FADOF to work normally at room temperature without heating, but also has some new features due to the inherent characteristics of the HCL. In this Letter, we implement an HCL-FADOF operating on the rubidium D2 line and experimentally investigate the effect of ambient temperature on its performance and cold-start characteristics. Results show that the HCL-FADOF can provide excellent stability within a large temperature range, even at temperatures below 0°C. A comparison of the start performance between the HCL-FADOF and FADOF using saturated vapor cells is also provided. This work shows unique features of the HCL-FADOF in a low-temperature environment and its quick-start advantage, which provides a solid foundation for extensive applications.
