Abstract:We explore the potential of chromatic dispersion and polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) mitigation using Viterbi equalization in 10 Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (NRZ-DPSK) and differential quadrature phase-shift keying (NRZ-DQPSK) systems. We show through Monte Carlo simulations that using Viterbi equalization improves the performance of NRZ-OOK, NRZ-DPSK and NRZ-DQPSK receivers. For NRZ-DQPSK receiver with a Viterbi equalizer, the chromatic dispersion tolerance is about 5000 ps/nm and the 1st order PMD tolerance is about 160 ps at 3 dB OSNR penalty.

Abstract:Chromatic dispersion compensation of non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK) signals with a diverse-vestigial-sideband-filtering feed forward equaliser and a decision feedback equaliser (DVSB-FFEDFE) is presented, in which diverse vestigial sideband (VSB) filtering is realised with a Mach-Zehnder (MZ) filter. In a 10.709 Gbit/s NRZ-OOK system, experiment results show that the standard singlemode fibre transmission distance at 3 dB optical signal-to-noise ratio penalty with DVSB-FFE-DFE is doubled, compared to that with conventional FFE-DFE.

Abstract:We propose a diverse vestigial-sideband-filtering feed forward equalizer and decision feedback equalizer (DVSB-FFE-DFE), which is capable of compensating residual chromatic dispersion (CD) as well as mitigating fiber nonlinearity in on-off keying (OOK) systems. In DVSBFFE-DFE, the upper and the lower VSB filtered signals are jointly equalized with FFE followed by DFE. Simulation results show that in a 42.7 Gbit/s nonreturn-to-zero OOK system, DVSB-FFE-DFE can effectively mitigate the required optical signal-to-noise ratio penalty induced by residual CD and fiber nonlinearity.

Abstract:We present a novel investigation on the enhancement of phase noise in coherent optical transmission system due to electronic chromatic dispersion compensation. Two types of equalizers, including a time domain fiber dispersion finite impulse response (FD-FIR) filter and a frequency domain blind look-up (BLU) filter are applied to mitigate the chromatic dispersion in a 112-Gbit/s polarization division multiplexed quadrature phase shift keying (PDM-QPSK) transmission system. The bit-error-rate (BER) floor in phase estimation using an optimized one-tap normalized least-mean-square (NLMS) filter, and considering the equalization enhanced phase noise (EEPN) is evaluated analytically including the correlation effects. The numerical simulations are implemented and compared with the performance of differential QPSK demodulation system.

Abstract:The performance of long-haul coherent optical fiber transmission system is significantly affected by the equalization enhanced phase noise (EEPN), due to the interaction between the electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) and the laser phase noise. In this paper, we present a comprehensive study on different chromatic dispersion (CD) compensation and carrier phase recovery (CPR) approaches, in the n-level phase shift keying (n-PSK) and the n-level quadrature amplitude modulation (n-QAM) coherent optical transmission systems, considering the impacts of EEPN. Four CD compensation methods are considered: the time-domain equalization (TDE), the frequency-domain equalization (FDE), the least mean square (LMS) adaptive equalization are applied for EDC, and the dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) is employed for optical dispersion compensation (ODC). Meanwhile, three carrier phase recovery methods are also involved: a one-tap normalized least mean square (NLMS) algorithm, a block-wise average (BWA) algorithm, and a Viterbi-Viterbi (VV) algorithm. Numerical simulations have been carried out in a 28-Gbaud dual-polarization quadrature phase shift keying (DP-QPSK) coherent transmission system, and the results indicate that the origin of EEPN depends on the choice of chromatic dispersion compensation methods, and the effects of EEPN also behave moderately different in accordance to different carrier phase recovery scenarios.

Abstract:We investigate electrical dispersion compensation for 40-Gb/s differential quadrature phase-shift keying modulation signals utilizing multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) decision-feed back equalizers (DFEs). In our scheme, all branch signals after balanced-photodiode detection or single-photodiode detection are analogous to antennae in a MIMO wireless transmission systems. Chromatic dispersion and polarization-mode dispersion tolerances for various MIMO DFE configurations are compared. The flexible scheme can be easily extended to m-ary PSK modulation formats.

Abstract:By introducing the Fermat number transform into chromatic dispersion compensation and adaptive equalization, the computational complexity has been reduced by 68% compared with the con?ventional implementation. Abstract:We study a whole compensation system for chromatic dispersion and polarization mode dispersion, including monitoring subsystems and compensation subsystems in optical communication systems with single channel speed 40Gbit/s and CSRZ format. We employed the spectral shift effect of a semiconductor optical amplifier for chromatic dispersion monitoring, and a non-linearly chirped fiber Bragg grating for chromatic dispersion compensation. The degree of polarization characterizes is used as feedback control signal of polarization mode dispersion monitoring, and a polarization controller and a polarization maintaining fiber are formed a polarization mode dispersion compensator. The transmission experiment demonstrates that the whole compensation system is effective. It is suit for chromatic dispersion management and polarization mode dispersion eliminating in optical communication systems with high single channel speed and CSRZ format.

Abstract:Multichip differential phase-shift keying (MC-DPSK) is a promising method to improve the performance of DPSK signal. It has been proposed that a joint maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) equalizer can be utilized after MC-DPSK detection to further improve the chromatic dispersion (CD) and polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) tolerance in optical fiber transmission system. In this letter, we investigate electrical CD and PMD compensation for MC-DPSK detection with different chip numbers utilizing multiple-input-single-output (MISO) decision-feedback equalizers, which has less computation complexity than joint MLSE equalizers. Moreover, we propose the MISO equalization scheme after separate-photodiode MC-DPSK detection, which will further improve the distortion tolerance.

Abstract:We investigate the use of differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) with a reduced modulation depth (RMD) as the downstream modulation format to enhance the tolerance to both chromatic dispersion and remodulation timing misalignment. Despite the RMD, in each optical network unit the demodulated DPSK signal from the destructive port of the delay-interferometer still maintains a high extinction ratio (ER), whereas the signal from the constructive port has a very low ER and can be readily remodulated by the upstream signal. Error-free operation at 10 Gb/s was achieved in a 20-km-reach experiment without dispersion compensation and remodulation synchronization.

Abstract:Digital signal processing (DSP) has been proved to be a successful technology recently in high speed and high spectrum-efficiency optical short-haul and access network, which enables high performances based on digital equalizations and compensations. In this paper, we investigate advanced DSP at the transmitter and receiver side for signal pre-equalization and post-equalization in an optical access network. A novel DSP-based digital and optical pre-equalization scheme has been proposed for bandwidth-limited high speed short-distance communication system, which is based on the feedback of receiver-side adaptive equalizers, such as least-mean-squares (LMS) algorithm and constant or multi-modulus algorithms (CMA, MMA). Based on this scheme, we experimentally demonstrate 400GE on a single optical carrier based on the highest ETDM 120-GBaud PDM-PAM-4 signal, using one external modulator and coherent detection. A line rate of 480-Gb/s is achieved, which enables 20% forward-error correction (FEC) overhead to keep the 400-Gb/s net information rate. The performance after fiber transmission shows large margin for both short range and metro/regional networks. We also extend the advanced DSP for short haul optical access networks by using high order QAMs. We propose and demonstrate a high speed multi-band CAP-WDM-PON system on intensity modulation, direct detection and digital equalizations. A hybrid modified cascaded MMA post-equalization schemes are used to equalize the multi-band CAP-mQAM signals. Using this scheme, we successfully demonstrates 550Gb/s high capacity WDM-PON system with 11 WDM channels, 55 sub-bands, and 10-Gb/s per user in the downstream over 40-km SMF.

Abstract:We theoretically and experimentally investigate a time-domain digital pre-equalization (DPEQ) scheme for bandwidth-limited optical coherent communication systems, which is based on feedback of channel characteristics from the receiver-side blind and adaptive equalizers, such as least-mean-squares (LMS) algorithm and constant or multi-modulus algorithms (CMA, MMA). Based on the proposed DPEQ scheme, we theoretically and experimentally study its performance in terms of various channel conditions as well as resolutions for channel estimation, such as filtering bandwidth, taps length, and OSNR. Using a high speed 64-GSa/s DAC in cooperation with the proposed DPEQ technique, we successfully synthesized band-limited 40-Gbaud signals in modulation formats of polarization-diversion multiplexed (PDM) quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK), 8-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and 16-QAM, and significant improvement in both back-to-back and transmission BER performances are also demonstrated. Abstract:Chromatic dispersion (CD) has been considered as a significant issue that needs to he addressed over the past decades. Nowadays, as the bandwidth of radio frequency signals has expanded to multi-gigahertz, CD becomes increasingly troublesome for some wideband signals such as linear frequency modulated waveform (LFMW), which requires a flat amplitude response and a linear phase response. In this paper, we first investigate the CD-induced amplitude distortion and phase distortion that a wideband signal will suffer in traditional double-sideband (DSB) modulated and single-sideband (SSB) modulated radio-over-fiber (RoF) links with an emphasis on the LFMW. The detrimental impacts of the CD-induced distortions are subsequently discussed based on the pulse compression performance. Then, a two-tap microwave photonics equalizer (MPE) model is proposed and its operating principle for overcoming the CD-induced distortions is demonstrated. Based on the model, we design the MPE, which is mainly composed of an integrated dual-polarization dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator and a differential group delay module. In the proofof-concept experiment, the RoF link utilizing the proposed MPE is built, and a 1-10 GHz LFMW is transmitted over the 66.3-km single-mode fiber. Thanks to the MPE, both CD-induced amplitude distortion and phase distortion are successfully compensated. Pulse compression results show that the pulse, compared with the signal transmitted in the SSB-haled link.

Abstract:The frequency domain equalizers (FDEs) employing two types of overlap-add zero-padding (OLA-ZP) methods are applied to compensate the chromatic dispersion in a 112-Gbit/s non-return-to-zero polarization division multiplexed quadrature phase shift keying (NRZ-PDM-QPSK) coherent optical transmission system. Simulation results demonstrate that the OLA-ZP methods can achieve the same acceptable performance as the overlap-save method. The required minimum overlap (or zero-padding) in the FDE is derived, and the optimum fast Fourier transform length to minimize the computational complexity is also analyzed.
