Abstract:We explore the potential of chromatic dispersion and polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) mitigation using Viterbi equalization in 10 Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (NRZ-DPSK) and differential quadrature phase-shift keying (NRZ-DQPSK) systems. We show through Monte Carlo simulations that using Viterbi equalization improves the performance of NRZ-OOK, NRZ-DPSK and NRZ-DQPSK receivers. For NRZ-DQPSK receiver with a Viterbi equalizer, the chromatic dispersion tolerance is about 5000 ps/nm and the 1st order PMD tolerance is about 160 ps at 3 dB OSNR penalty.

Abstract:Compensating dynamically changing polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) is important for optical fiber transmission systems. We present simulations of a Viterbi equalization for dynamic PMD mitigation in 10-Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero differential phase-shift keying systems. The equalizer can dynamically track fast varying differential group delay (DGD) and achieve similar performance to static DGD.

Abstract:In-line synchronous modulation as a way of mitigating the signal quality degradation induced by polar ization mode dispersion(PMD)was experimentally studied using 10-Gb/s return to zero signal.Bit error rate of the degraded signal and the synchronously modulated signal under the differential group delay(DGD)values of 10,20,34,and 70 ps was measured and compared.The experimental results showed that in-line synchronous modulation is useful to mitigate the signal quality degeneration induced by PMD.1-dB power penalty reduction was obtained even when the PMD was as high as 70％ of the bit interval.The limitation of method is also discussed.

Abstract:Summary form only given. The maximum reach of ultra-longhaul on-off keying transmission systems is mainly limited by the three length dependent parameters: CSNR degradation, nonlinear (NL) signal distortion, and fiber polarization mode dispersion (PMD) (in the case of 40 Gb/s per channel systems). The penalty arising from nonlinear effects depends strongly on the link design, while the penalty caused by PMD is related (in the case of linear signal propagation), to the intrinsic fiber PMD and the specific signal modulation format. It is the goal of system engineering to allocate adequate margin for each penalty source such that the system range is maximized under the constraint that the total penalty is covered by the link budget. Here we show for the first time that under certain circumstances the total penalty from nonlinear effects and PMD can be less than the sum of the two individual penalties. Indeed, we demonstrate that a PMD pre-distorted signal suffers less nonlinear signal perturbations. Ultra-longhaul 40 Gb/s systems (per channel) will need PMD compensation even when running over low PMD fiber. Thus, a post compensation of the pre-PMD distortion requires no significant add-ons in the system architecture.

Abstract:Three group velocity dispersion (GVD) compensation schemes, i.e., the post-compensation, precompensation and hybrid-compensation schemes, are discussed with considering polarization mode dispersion (PMD). In the 10- and 40-Gbit/s non-return-zero (NRZ) on-off-key (OOK) systems, three physical factors, Kerr effect, GVD and PMD are considered. The numerical results show that, when the impact of PMD is taken into account, the GVD pre-compensation scheme performs best with more than 1 dB better of average eye-opening penalty (EOP) when input power is up to 10 dBm in the 10-Gbit/s system. However the GVD post-compensation scheme performs best for the case of 40 Gbit/s with input power less than 13 dBm, and GVD pre-compensation will be better if the input power increased beyond this range. The results are different from those already reported under the assumption that the impact of PMD is neglected. Therefore, the research in this paper provide a different insight into the system optimization when PMD, Kerr effect and GVD are considered.

Abstract:PMD has been the major limiting factor for long haul high bitrate optical fiber transmission. The relationship between 1st order PMD and optical signal DOP (degree of polarization) of PRBS NRZ/RZ is discussed theoretically, and the impacts of different input states of polarization and higher-order PMD on signal DOP of NRZ/RZ are analyzed by numerical simulations. Then, Monte-Carlo simulations are performed with all order PMD model on the statistics of PMD compensator, which uses signal DOP as the feedback control signal in the 10 Gbit/s NRZ optical transmission system. The statistical simulation results indicate that the compensation probability for the signal eye-diagrams can reach 99.99% when the average DGD of the link is below 43 ps.

Abstract:We investigate the use of differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) with a reduced modulation depth (RMD) as the downstream modulation format to enhance the tolerance to both chromatic dispersion and remodulation timing misalignment. Despite the RMD, in each optical network unit the demodulated DPSK signal from the destructive port of the delay-interferometer still maintains a high extinction ratio (ER), whereas the signal from the constructive port has a very low ER and can be readily remodulated by the upstream signal. Error-free operation at 10 Gb/s was achieved in a 20-km-reach experiment without dispersion compensation and remodulation synchronization.

Abstract:In this paper, we numerically evaluate the performance of 10 Gbit/s systems with a novel adjustable first-order polarization mode dispersion (PMD) compensator and forward error correction (FEC). The scheme of PMD compensation employs sampled fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) written into a high-birefringence fiber using uniform phase masks. And the technique of FEC is based on the concatenated Reed–Solomon codes of RS(247,239)+RS(255,247), which is also called enhanced FEC (EFEC). The numerical simulation results show that the combined use of PMD compensation and EFEC can increase system PMD tolerance to one bit period of average PMD when keeping the sensitivity penalty (@BER=10−10) below 1 dB.

Abstract:A novel digital signal processing (DSP) scheme for quadrature duobinary (QDB) spectrum shaped polarization multiplexed quadrature phase shift keying (PM-QPSK) based on multi-modulus blind equalizations (MMBE) is proposed and demonstrated with both simulation and experimental results. The key algorithms for this novel digital signal processing scheme include the cascaded multi-modulus algorithm (CMMA) for blind polarization de-multiplexing, multi-modulus QPSK partitioning frequency offset estimation (FOE) and two stage carrier phase recovery (CPR) with maximum likelihood phase estimation. The final signal is detected by maximum-likelihood sequence detection (MLSD) for data BER measurement. It shows that CMMA have better frequency response performance compared with CMA for noise compression. The performances of FOE and CPR are also investigated with different spectrum shaping bandwidth, group size and laser linewidth. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed digital signal processing scheme is demonstrated by the experiment of 112 Gb/s QDB spectrum shaped PM-QPSK signal with a 25 GHz bandwidth waveshaper for Nyquist WDM channels.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an enhanced radio-frequency (RF) spectrum analysis technique to simultaneously monitor optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) and polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) for return-to-zero ON- OFF keying (RZ-OOK) systems. In this method, by cascading a large differential group delay element at the monitoring module, the PMD and OSNR parameters can be derived from the analysis of the position shift and the minimum power of the RF spectral dip, respectively. Experimental results show that this scheme can monitor PMD from 0 to 90 ps with less than 2-ps error and OSNR from 16 to 35 dB with less than 1-dB error in a 10-Gb/s RZ-OOK transmission system with a pulsewidth of 2.5 ps. The scheme possesses the advantages of simple implementation, large monitoring range, and high PMD monitoring sensitivity by using the RF spectrum analysis only at low-frequency range.

Abstract:With the development of the Internet and information technology, optical fiber communication systems need to meet people's information demand for large capacity and high speed. High-order phase modulation and channel multiplexing can improve the capacity and data rate of optical fiber communication systems, but they also bring the problem of bit error. To improve the transmission quality and reliability of optical fiber communication systems, forward error correction (FEC) coding techniques are commonly used, which serve as the fundamental approach to enhance the quality and reliability of fiber optic communication systems, ensuring that the received data remain accurate and reliable. The FEC in optical fiber communication systems is divided into three generations. The first generation FEC is mainly hard decision codewords, represented as RS code. The second generation FEC is mainly cascaded code, which stands for interleaved cascaded code. The third generation of FEC mainly refers to soft decision codes, which are represented as low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. As a kind of FEC, LDPC codes stand out as pivotal contributors in the field of optical communication and have gained remarkable attention due to exceptional error correction performance and low decoding complexity. Based on IEEE802.16e standard, LDPC code with specific code length and rate is compiled and simulated in MATLAB and VPItransmissionMaker 10.1 and successfully incorporated into polarization multiplexed differential quadrature phase shift keying (PM-DQPSK) coherent optical transmission system. The simulation results indicate that the bit error rate (BER) can be reduced to 10−3 when the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) reaches 14.2 dB, and the BER experiences a reduction by nearly three orders of magnitude when the OSNR is 17.2 dB. These findings underscore the efficacy of LDPC codes in significantly improving the performance of optical communication systems, particularly in scenarios demanding robust error correction capabilities. This study provides valuable, significant results regarding the potential of LDPC codes for enhancing the reliability of optical transmission in real-world applications.

Abstract:We have realized the first field transmission of 8 × 216.8-Gb/s Nyquist wavelength-division-multiplexing (N-WDM) signals over 1750-km G.652 fiber consisting of 950-km real and 800-km lab fibers with erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA)-only amplification. The average loss per span is 21.6 dB. Each channel is modulated with 54.2-Gbaud (216.8-Gb/s) polarization-division-multiplexing carrier-suppressed return-to-zero quadrature-phase-shift-keying (PDM-CSRZ-QPSK) data on a 50-GHz grid giving a record spectral efficiency (SE) of 4 b/s/Hz. Digital post filtering and 1-bit maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) are introduced into the offline digital signal processing (DSP) at the receiver to suppress noise, linear crosstalk and filtering effects. We have also investigated the co-transmission of 200 G PDM-CSRZ-QPSK and 200 G PDM 16-ary quadrature-amplitude-modulation (PDM-16 QAM) signals on a 50-GHz grid, and found that PDM-CSRZ-QPSK signals have better bit-error-rate (BER) performance for both back-to-back and 700-km transmission cases. Meanwhile, PDM-16 QAM signals are subject to larger crosstalk from the neighboring Nyquist QPSK channels.
