Abstract:By introducing the Fermat number transform into chromatic dispersion compensation and adaptive equalization, the computational complexity has been reduced by 68% compared with the con?ventional implementation. Experimental results validate its transmission performance with only 0.8 dB receiver sensitivity penalty in a 75 km-40 GBaud-PDM-16QAM system.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to reduce the computational complexity of chromatic dispersion compensation (CDC) and adaptive equalization (AEQ) algorithms by introducing the Fermat Number Transform (FNT) in coherent optical communication systems, thereby reducing the power consumption and resource consumption of digital signal processing (DSP). Specifically, the paper proposes a CDC and AEQ algorithm based on FNT and verifies its performance in a 75 - kilometer 40 - Giga - Baud (GBaud) polarization - multiplexed 16 - quadrature amplitude modulation (PDM - 16QAM) system. The paper points out that in the existing coherent modules, the power consumption of DSP accounts for approximately 50% of the total power consumption, and CDC and AEQ are the most resource - consuming parts in DSP. Although the traditional frequency - domain method is more efficient than the time - domain method, it still requires a large number of multiplication operations, especially when performing the fast Fourier transform (FFT) and the inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT). Therefore, the paper explores the use of FNT to further simplify the complexity of these operations in order to achieve lower computational complexity and power consumption. Through experimental verification, compared with the traditional FFT - based method, the FNT - CDC + FNT - AEQ scheme proposed in the paper reduces the computational complexity by 68%, and at the same time, the loss of receiving sensitivity is only 0.8 decibels (dB) at a transmission distance of 75 kilometers. This shows that FNT significantly improves the energy efficiency of the system while maintaining the transmission performance.
