Abstract:Stochastic nonlinear impairment is the primary factor that limits the transmission performance of high-speed orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode-division multiplexing (MDM) optical fiber communication systems. This Letter presents a low-complexity adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system (LANFIS) nonlinear equalizer for OAM-MDM intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM/DD) transmission with three OAM modes and 15 wavelength division multiplex (WDM) channels. The LANFIS equalizer could adjust the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the distorted pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) symbols to fit the statistical characteristics of the WDM-OAM-MDM transmission channel. Therefore, although the transmission symbols in the WDM-OAM-MDM system are subjected to a stochastic nonlinear impairment, the proposed LANFIS equalizer can effectively compensate the distorted signals. The proposed equalizer outperforms the Volterra equalizer with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 2, 1.5, and 1.3 dB for three OAM modes at a wavelength of 1550.12 nm, respectively. It also outperforms a CNN equalizer, with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 1, 0.5, and 0.3 dB, respectively. Moreover, complexity reductions of 67%, 74%, and 99.9% are achieved for the LANFIS equalizer compared with the Volterra, CNN, and ANFIS equalizers, respectively. The proposed equalizer has high performance and low complexity, making it a promising candidate for a high-speed WDM-OAM-MDM system.

Abstract:Digital signal processing (DSP) has been proved to be a successful technology recently in high speed and high spectrum-efficiency optical short-haul and access network, which enables high performances based on digital equalizations and compensations. In this paper, we investigate advanced DSP at the transmitter and receiver side for signal pre-equalization and post-equalization in an optical access network. A novel DSP-based digital and optical pre-equalization scheme has been proposed for bandwidth-limited high speed short-distance communication system, which is based on the feedback of receiver-side adaptive equalizers, such as least-mean-squares (LMS) algorithm and constant or multi-modulus algorithms (CMA, MMA). Based on this scheme, we experimentally demonstrate 400GE on a single optical carrier based on the highest ETDM 120-GBaud PDM-PAM-4 signal, using one external modulator and coherent detection. A line rate of 480-Gb/s is achieved, which enables 20% forward-error correction (FEC) overhead to keep the 400-Gb/s net information rate. The performance after fiber transmission shows large margin for both short range and metro/regional networks. We also extend the advanced DSP for short haul optical access networks by using high order QAMs. We propose and demonstrate a high speed multi-band CAP-WDM-PON system on intensity modulation, direct detection and digital equalizations. A hybrid modified cascaded MMA post-equalization schemes are used to equalize the multi-band CAP-mQAM signals. Using this scheme, we successfully demonstrates 550Gb/s high capacity WDM-PON system with 11 WDM channels, 55 sub-bands, and 10-Gb/s per user in the downstream over 40-km SMF.

Abstract:We propose a low-complexity equalization scheme with non-uniform quantization and rotational update mechanism (RUM). The scheme is verified in implementation of DDLMS equalization for 92-Gbaud 10-km offline and 14.7456-Gbaud 25-km FPGA-based real time PA M4 IM/DD experimental transmission, results show up to 99.5% multiplications (DSP resource usage) are reduced comparing to normal DDLMS equalizer . A large number of equivalent taps can be achieved based on several active taps.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide an overview of recent progress on advanced digital signal processing (DSP) techniques for high-capacity long-haul coherent optical fiber transmission systems. Not only the linear impairments existing in optical transmission links need to be compensated, but also, the nonlinear impairments require proper algorithms for mitigation because they become major limiting factors for long-haul large-capacity optical transmission systems. Besides the time domain equalization (TDE), the frequency domain equalization (FDE) DSP also provides a similar performance, with a much-reduced computational complexity. Advanced DSP also plays an important role for the realization of space division multiplexing (SDM). SDM techniques have been developed recently to enhance the system capacity by at least one order of magnitude. Some impressive results have been reported and have outperformed the nonlinear Shannon limit of the single-mode fiber (SMF). SDM introduces the space dimension to the optical fiber communication. The few-mode fiber (FMF) and multi-core fiber (MCF) have been manufactured for novel multiplexing techniques such as mode-division multiplexing (MDM) and multi-core multiplexing (MCM). Each mode or core can be considered as an independent degree of freedom, but unfortunately, signals will suffer serious coupling during the propagation. Multi-input–multi-output (MIMO) DSP can equalize the signal coupling and makes SDM transmission feasible. The machine learning (ML) technique has attracted worldwide attention and has been explored for advanced DSP. In this paper, we firstly introduce the principle and scheme of coherent detection to explain why the DSP techniques can compensate for transmission impairments. Then corresponding technologies related to the DSP, such as nonlinearity compensation, FDE, SDM and ML will be discussed. Relevant techniques will be analyzed, and representational results and experimental verifications will be demonstrated. In the end, a brief conclusion and perspective will be provided.

With this technique, SE can be increased to 4 bits/s/Hz for QPSK signals. A novel digital super-Nyquist signal generation scheme is also proposed to further suppress the Nyquist signal bandwidth and reduce channel crosstalk without using optical pre-filtering. Only optical couplers are needed for super-Nyquist WDM multiplexing. We extend the DSP for short-haul optical transmission networks by using high-order QAMs. We propose and experimental y demonstrate a high-speed CAP-64 QAM system using direct modulation laser based on direct detection and digital equalization. Decision-directed least mean square is used to equalize the CAP-64QAM. Using this scheme, we generate and transmit up to 60 Gbit/s CAP-64QAM over 20 km stand single-mode fiber based on the DML and direct detection. Final y, several key problems are solved for real time OFDM signal transmission and processing. Using coherent detection, up to 100 Gbit/s 16 QAM-OFDM real-time transmission is realized.

Abstract:Digital signal processing (DSP) for high spectrum efficiency transmission system are investigated in both long-haul and short haul optical networks. For long-haul transmission, two different super-Nyquist WDM systems based on advanced post (receiver side) and pre (transmitter side) DSP are demonstrated and studied. A novel DSP scheme for this optical super-Nyquist filtering 9-QAM like signals based on multi-modulus equalization (MMEQ) without post filter are proposed and experimentally demonstrated, which directly recovers the Nyquist filtered QPSK to a 9-QAM like signal. This improved filtering tolerance and transmission performance are demonstrated in an 8-channel 112-Gb/s wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) experiment with a 25GHz-grid over 2640-km single-mode fiber (SMF). Alternatively, a novel digital super-Nyquist signal generation scheme is proposed to further suppress the Nyquist signal bandwidth and reduce the channel crosstalk without using optical pre-filtering and using. Only optical couplers are needed for super-Nyquist WDM multiplexing. Using this scheme, we successfully generate and transmit 10 channel 32-GBaud (128-Gb/s) PDM-9-QAM signals within 25-GHz grid over 2975-km at a net SE of 4 bit/s/Hz (after excluding the 20% soft-decision FEC overhead). We extend the DSP for short haul optical transmission networks by using high order QAMs. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a high speed CAP-64QAM system using direct modulation laser (DML) based on direct detection and digital equalizations. Decision-directed least mean squares (DD-LMS) are used to equalize the CAP-64QAM. Using this scheme, we successfully generate and transmit up to a record 60-Gb/s CAP-64QAM over 20-km stand single-mode fiber (SSMF) based on the DML and direct detection.

Abstract:Delta-sigma modulation can be used as a high spectral efficiency interface in place of conventional common public radio interface (CPRI) in mobile fronthaul (MFH) networks. However, inter-symbol interference (ISI) becomes more difficult to be mitigated in the networks due to bit quantization in delta-sigma modulation. In this paper, we propose a novel feedforward equalization (FFE) scheme based on the least mean square (LMS) algorithm for MFH networks employing 4th-order delta-sigma modulation technology with 1 and 2 bit quantization to alleviate the performance degradation caused by ISI. The performance of both 1-bit and 2-bit quantization systems employing the proposed FFE scheme with different tap lengths and step sizes has been systematically investigated. Our results show that, under the minimum computational complexity, the maximum transmission capacity can reach 8.98 Gbps when using the FFE scheme with 11 taps and step size of 3 × 10-5 or 3.5 × 10-5 and the average error vector magnitude (EVM) can be minimized to a level less than 0.032 with 19 taps and step size of 4 × 10-5 or 4.5 × 10-5 for 1-bit quantization system while for 2-bit quantization system, the maximum transmission capacity of 11.4 Gbps can be obtained when employing the FFE scheme with 19 taps and step size of 3.5 × 10-5 and the minimal average EVM less than 0.01 can be achieved with 19 taps and step size of 4 × 10-5. More hopefully, this work provides guidelines for optimizing the equalization scheme based on the requirements of EVMs, capacity, and computational complexity.

Abstract:The frequency domain equalizers (FDEs) employing two types of overlap-add zero-padding (OLA-ZP) methods are applied to compensate the chromatic dispersion in a 112-Gbit/s non-return-to-zero polarization division multiplexed quadrature phase shift keying (NRZ-PDM-QPSK) coherent optical transmission system. Simulation results demonstrate that the OLA-ZP methods can achieve the same acceptable performance as the overlap-save method. The required minimum overlap (or zero-padding) in the FDE is derived, and the optimum fast Fourier transform length to minimize the computational complexity is also analyzed.
Dual-Tap Optical-Digital Feedforward Equalization Enabling High-Speed Optical Transmission in IM/DD Systems

Abstract:Intensity-modulation and direct-detection (IM/DD) transmission is widely adopted for high-speed optical transmission scenarios due to its cost-effectiveness and simplicity. However, as the data rate increases, the fiber chromatic dispersion (CD) would induce a serious power fading effect, and direct detection could generate inter-symbol interference (ISI). Moreover, the ISI becomes more severe with the increase of fiber length, thereby highly restricting the transmission distance of IM/DD systems. This paper proposes a dual-tap optical-digital feedforward equalization (DT-ODFE) scheme, which could effectively compensate for CD-induced power fading while maintaining low cost and simplicity. A theoretical channel response is formulated for IM/DD transmission, incorporating a dual-tap optical equalizer, and the theoretical analysis reveals that for an IM/DD transmission using 1371nm over 10km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF), frequency notch is removed from 33.7GHz to 46GHz. Simulation results show that the DT- ODFE achieves an SNR gain of 2.3dB over IM/DD systems with symbol-space feedforward equalizer (FFE) alone. As the fiber length increases to 15 km, DT- ODFE performs well, while FFE, decision-feedback equalizer (DFE) and Volterra nonlinear equalizers (VNLE) all fail to compensate for the power fading and the 7% hard-decision FEC limit is not satisfied. For 200 Gb/s/$\lambda$ PAM-4 over 15km SSMF, results show that the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the proposed DT- ODFE with optimal coefficients satisfies the 7% hard-decision FEC limit, which uncovers the great potential of the DT- ODFE for high-speed IM/DD systems in LR/FR scenarios.

Digital Back-Propagation in Optical Fiber Communication Systems Considering Equalization Enhanced Phase Noise

Abstract:The effect of equalization enhanced phase noise (EEPN) will be introduced in digital signal processing (DSP) based coherent optical communication systems. The EEPN will seriously degrade the transmission performance of a highcapacity optical transmission system. In this work, the influence of EEPN on the performance of dual- polarization 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (DP-16QAM) optical transmission system using the electrical dispersion compensation (EDC), the single-channel digital back-propagation (DBP), the partial-bandwidth DBP and the full-field DBP (FF-DBP) were comparatively evaluated with and without considering distortions from the EEPN. Deteriorations on achievable information rates (AIRs) and modulation error ratios (MERs) of optical communication systems due to EEPN have also been assessed. Numerical results indicate that the transmission performance of coherent optical systems can be significantly degraded by the EEPN, especially when FF-DBP is used for the nonlinearity compensation. The larger the linewidth of the local oscillator (LO) laser is, the more serious the degradation caused by EEPN is. This deterioration leads to a decrease in optimal launch powers, AIRs and MERs in the long-haul optical communication systems. In the DP-16QAM transmission system, because of the interference of the EEPN generated by the LO laser with a linewidth of 1 MHz, the degradations on the AIR and MER are 0.15 Tbit/s and 4.15 dB in the case of FF-DBP, respectively. It can also be concluded that, for coherent optical systems with long transmission distances and high symbol rates, the compensation bandwidth and the computational complexity of MC-DBP in the DSP module can be significantly reduced by using narrower-linewidth LO lasers.
Low-Complexity Frequency Domain Equalization over Fast Fading Channels

Abstract:Wireless communications over fast fading channels are challenging, requiring either frequent channel tracking or complicated signaling schemes such as orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation. In this paper, we propose low-complexity frequency domain equalizations to combat fast fading, based on novel discrete delay-time and frequency-Doppler channel models. Exploiting the circular stripe diagonal nature of the frequency-Doppler channel matrix, we introduce low-complexity frequency domain minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalization for OTFS systems with fully resolvable Doppler spreads. We also demonstrate that the proposed MMSE equalization is applicable to conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and single carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) systems with short signal frames and partially resolvable Doppler spreads. After generalizing the input-output data symbol relationship, we analyze the equalization performance via channel matrix eigenvalue decomposition and derive a closed-form expression for the theoretical bit-error-rate. Simulation results for OTFS, OFDM, and SC-FDE modulations verify that the proposed low-complexity frequency domain equalization methods can effectively exploit the time diversity over fast fading channels. Even with partially resolvable Doppler spread, the conventional SC-FDE can achieve performance close to OTFS, especially in fast fading channels with a dominating line-of-sight path.

Abstract:We theoretically and experimentally investigate a time-domain digital pre-equalization (DPEQ) scheme for bandwidth-limited optical coherent communication systems, which is based on feedback of channel characteristics from the receiver-side blind and adaptive equalizers, such as least-mean-squares (LMS) algorithm and constant or multi-modulus algorithms (CMA, MMA). Based on the proposed DPEQ scheme, we theoretically and experimentally study its performance in terms of various channel conditions as well as resolutions for channel estimation, such as filtering bandwidth, taps length, and OSNR. Using a high speed 64-GSa/s DAC in cooperation with the proposed DPEQ technique, we successfully synthesized band-limited 40-Gbaud signals in modulation formats of polarization-diversion multiplexed (PDM) quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK), 8-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and 16-QAM, and significant improvement in both back-to-back and transmission BER performances are also demonstrated. Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) DFT-spread optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission system utilizing a cost-effective directly modulated laser (DML) and direct detection. For 20-Gbaud 16QAM-OFDM signal, with the aid of nonlinear equalization (NLE) algorithm, we respectively provide 6.2-dB and 5.2-dB receiver sensitivity improvement under the hard-decision forward-error-correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8×10−3 for the back-to-back (BTB) case and after transmission over 10-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) case, related to only adopt post-equalization scheme. To our knowledge, this is the first time to use dynamic nonlinear equalizer (NLE) based on the summation of the square of the difference between samples in one IM/DD OFDM system with DML to mitigate nonlinear distortion.

Abstract:We demonstrate a low latency fiber channel distortion equalizer that implements mainly of the equalization calculations in the optical domain, based on an integrated photonic reservoir computing chip. We discussed the equalization effect of the equalizer under different dispersion noise and optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) conditions. The bit error rate (BER) of the C-band with 25Gb/s on-off key (OOK) distorted signal in 25km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) has been reduced by 3 orders of magnitude. By optimizing weights, this equalizer can adapt to link impairments. It can effectively equalize the distorted signals at data rates of 10–40 Gb/s over 25km in SSMF transmission. Furthermore, it can efficiently equalize the impaired signals after 5-40km SSMF transmission at a signal rate of 25Gb/s.

Abstract:We propose a diverse vestigial-sideband-filtering feed forward equalizer and decision feedback equalizer (DVSB-FFE-DFE), which is capable of compensating residual chromatic dispersion (CD) as well as mitigating fiber nonlinearity in on-off keying (OOK) systems. In DVSBFFE-DFE, the upper and the lower VSB filtered signals are jointly equalized with FFE followed by DFE. Simulation results show that in a 42.7 Gbit/s nonreturn-to-zero OOK system, DVSB-FFE-DFE can effectively mitigate the required optical signal-to-noise ratio penalty induced by residual CD and fiber nonlinearity.

Abstract:Single-carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE), as a mature technique in wireless commutation, is widely researched for signal equalization and compensation utilizing high speed electronic devices such as DSP. In this paper, for the first time, we propose and demonstrate a SC-FDE technique in optical communication system. By adopting SC-FDE technique, after 50km, 80km, 100km transmission for a 10Gb/s ASK single sideband (SSB) signal on a single mode fiber (SMF), the dispersion of optical signa1 is effectively compensated. The SSB signal is generated by a dual-arm Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) cascading a phase modulator (PM) based on Hilbert Finite impulse response (FIR) digital filter. The results demonstrate, in our proposed SC-FDE model, the eye opening and the clock recovery is improved, and the effect of compensation is enhanced as the transmission distance increases.

Abstract:A decision feedback equalization (DFE) algorithm is proposed by simplifying Volterra structure. The simplification principle and process of the proposed Volterra-based equalization algorithm are presented. With the support of this algorithm, the signal damage for four-level pulse amplitude modulation signal (PAM-4) is compensated, which is caused by device bandwidth limitation and dispersion during transmission in C-band intensity modulation direct detection (IM-DD) fiber system. Experiments have been carried out to demonstrate that PAM-4 signals can transmit over 2 km in standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) based on a 30 GHz Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). The bit error rate ( BER ) can reach the threshold of hard decision-forward error correction (HD-FEC) ( BER =3.8×10 −3 ) and its sensitivity is reduced by 2 dBm compared with traditional feedforward equalization (FFE). Abstract:Coherent optical single-carrier frequency-domain equalization (CO-SCFDE) techniques especially frequency-division-multiplexing scheme (CO-SCFDM) is theoretically and experimentally studied. PON Architecture based on the single-carrier frequency division multiple address (SC-FDMA) technique is proposed and experimentally demonstrated.
