Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanowires (NWs) are usually considered to be brittle semiconductor materials, which limits their use in strain-related applications, even though they are already widely applied in various fields. Based on observations using an in situ transmission electron microscopy method, we find, for the first time, that individual crystalline TiO2 NWs with a bronze phase (TiO2-B) can exhibit an ultralarge elastic bending strain of up to 18.7%. Using an in situ atomic-scale study, the underlying mechanisms of the ultralarge bending deformation of TiO2-B NWs under the < 111 >{100} system are revealed to be governed by lattice shear and rich dislocation movements; the lattice shearing is supported by numerical simulations. Locally, large-scale sheared lattices with a shear strain of up to 10.7% can be observed in a bent NW. It is believed that the large-scale lattice shearing deformation offers the NW the ability to absorb a large bending energy so that fast dislocation aggregation and propagation are avoided. Therefore, the TiO2-B NWs can endure an ultralarge bending strain without crack formation or amorphization. However, it is found that the lattice shear-governed bending mechanism is not applied in the < 010 >{100} system. These results are able to provide more opportunities for the strain engineering of TiO2 NWs and also help promote the potential applications of TiO2 NW-based flexible devices.
In Situ Atomic-Scale Study on the Ultralarge Bending Behaviors of TiO2-B/Anatase Dual-Phase Nanowires.

Abstract:It is challenging but important to understand the mechanical properties of one-dimensional (1D) nanomaterials for their design and integration into nanodevices. Generally, brittle ceramic nanowires (NWs) cannot withstand a large bending strain. Herein, in situ bending deformation of titanium dioxide (TiO2) NWs with a bronze/anatase dual-phase was carried out inside a transmission electron microscopy (TEM) system. An ultralarge bending strain up to 20.3% was observed on individual NWs. Through an in situ atomic-scale study, the large bending behavior for a dual-phase TiO2 NW was found to be related to a continuous crystalline-structure evolution including phase transition, small deformation twinning, and dislocation nucleation and movements. Additionally, no amorphization or crack occurred in the dual-phase TiO2 NW even under an ultralarge bending strain. These results revealed that an individual ceramic NW can undergo a large bending strain with rich defect activities.

Abstract:Understanding the deformation mechanisms of rutile titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanowires (NWs) helps to improve the working reliability of TiO2-based nanoelectrical-mechanical systems and better apply strain engineering to these materials. This work investigated the bending deformation mechanisms at the atomic scale using in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) near room temperature. Large bending strains of 3.0% to 5.1% could be observed on individual TiO2 NWs near room temperature. The large bending deformation was attributed to the formation of rich stacking faults (SFs) lying on (10 (1) over bar) planes and the nucleation and glide of extended dislocations belonging to the {10 (1) over bar}< 101 > slip system.
Effect of Fe-doping on bending elastic properties of single-crystalline rutile TiO<sub>2</sub> nanowires

Abstract:Transition-metal-doping can improve some physical properties of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanowires (NWs), which leads to important applications in miniature devices. Here, we investigated the elastic moduli of single-crystalline pristine and Fe-doped rutile TiO2 NWs using the three-point bending method, which is taken as a case study of impacts on the elastic properties of TiO2 NWs caused by transition-metal-doping. The Young's modulus of the pristine rutile TiO2 NWs decreases when the cross-sectional area increases (changing from 246 GPa to 93.2 GPa). However, the elastic modulus of the Fe-doped rutile NWs was found to increase with the cross-sectional area (changing from 91.8 GPa to 200 GPa). For NWs with similar geometrical size, the elastic modulus (156.8 GPa) for Fe-doped rutile NWs is 24% smaller than that (194.5 GPa) of the pristine rutile TiO2 NWs. The vacancies generated by Fe-doping are supposed to cause the reduction of elastic modulus of rutile TiO2 NWs. This work provides a fundamental understanding of the effects of transition-metal-doping on the elastic properties of TiO2 NWs.
Atypical Defect Motions in Brittle Layered Sodium Titanate Nanowires.

Abstract:In situ tensile tests show atypical defect motions in the brittle Na2Ti3O7 (NTO) nanowire (NW) within the elastic deformation range. After brittle fracture, elastic recovery of the NTO NW is followed by reversible motion of the defects in a time-dependent manner. An in situ cyclic loading-unloading test shows that these mobile defects shift back and forth along the NW in accordance with the loading-unloading cycles and eventually restore their initial positions after the load is completely removed. The existence of the defects within the NTO NWs and their motions does not lead to plastic deformation of the NW. The atypical defect motion is speculated to be the result of the glidibility of the TiO6 layers, where weakly bonded cation layers are in between. Exploration of the above novel observation can establish new understandings of the deformation behavior of superlattice nanostructures.

Abstract:Study on mechanical properties of one-dimensional layered titanate nanomaterials is crucial since they demonstrate important applications in various fields. Here, we conducted ex situ and in situ atomic-scale investigation on bending properties of a kind of ceramic layered titanate (Na2Ti2O4(OH)2) nanowires in a transmission electron microscopy. The nanowires showed flexibility along <100> direction and could obtain a maximum bending strain of nearly 37%. By analysing the defect behaviours, the unique bending properties of this ceramic material was found to correlate with a novel arrangement of dislocations, an accessible nucleation and movement along the axial direction resulting from the weak electrostatic interaction between the TiO6 layers and the low b/a ratio. These results provide pioneering and key understanding on bending behaviours of layered titanate nanowire families and potentially other one-dimensional nanomaterials with layered crystalline structures.

Abstract:The effect of axial strain on the structural phase transition and electronic properties of TM6X6 (TM = Mo, W; X = S, Se, Te) nanowires have been systematically investigated by first-principles calculations. It is interesting to see the structural phase transition from the stable alpha-TM6X6 into metastable beta-TM6X6 nanowires by external axial tensile strains, accompanied by the electronic feature transition from metal to semiconductor. Among them, other beta-TM6X6 nanowires exhibit direct bandgap semiconducting characteristics whereas the beta-TM6Te6 nanowires are indirect bandgap semiconductors. Our results have revealed the structural phase transition and metal-to-semiconductor transition induced by axial strain and suggested potential application of TM6X6 nanowires in future phase-controlled catalytic, electronic and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Metallic nanowires (NW) usually exhibit unique physical, mechanical, and chemical properties compared to their bulk counterparts. Despite extensive research on their mechanical behavior, the atomic-scale deformation mechanisms of metallic nanowires remain incompletely understood. In this study, we investigate the deformation behavior of Au nanowires embedded with a longitudinal twin boundary (TB) under different loading rates using in situ nanomechanical testing integrated with atomistic simulations. The Au nanowires exhibit a recoverable bending strain of up to 27.5% with the presence of TBs. At low loading rates, the recoverable bending is attributed to the motion of stacking faults (SFs) and their interactions with TBs. At higher loading rates, the formation of high-angle grain boundaries and their reversible migration become dominant in Au nanowires. These findings enhance our understanding of the bending behavior of metallic nanowires, which could inspire the design of nanodevices with improved fatigue resistance and a large recoverable strain capacity.

Abstract:Titanate nanowires with layered structure were synthesized through hydrothermal reaction between TiO_2 powder and NaOH aqueous solution at the temperature 175℃-240℃. Influence of experimental parameters, such as molar ratio of reagents NaOH/TiO_2 and reaction temperature were studied. The structure of the nanowires was studied using X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. There were a lot domain boundaries and defects observed in the nanowires. The structure of the nanowires was found not to be the same with any known structure. The structure can be indexed using a monoclinic unit cell with a=2.15?nm, b=0.377?nm, c=1.28?nm,β=103.5°. Moreover, K_2Ti_8O_ 17 nanowires were fabricated through hydrothermal reaction between the synthesized sodium titanate and KOH aqueous solution.

Abstract:We synthesized sodium titanate nanotubes and nanowires using TiB2 and TIN as the starting materials, respectively in a hydrothermal process. The experimental results indicate that the reaction temperature influences the morphology of the product significantly. The nanowires were formed above 170 degrees C. Nanotubes were obtained below 140 degrees C. The synthesized nanotubes exhibit a crystallized multi-wall structure. The inner diameter was found to be ca. 5 nm. The diameter of the nanowires was found to be ca. 50 nm. The characteristic lengths was in the order of tens micrometers.

Abstract:There are significant applications of titanium silicides in industry. In this Letter, the mechanical properties of TiSi2 nanowire, including the Young modulus and fracture strength, are investigated based on AFM bending test. The fracture property indicates that the brittle fracture is the dominating character of TiSi2 nanowires. Theoretical analysis and FE simulation support the experimental results. The mechanical behavior of TiSi2 nanowires reported in this Letter will be useful references for the applications and designs of the future nanodevices.

Abstract:The mechanical responses of monatomic tantalum metallic glass nanowires with the width varying from 4 to 22 nm to uniaxial tension and compression loads have been studied using the molecular dynamics simulations, for investigating the size impact on their mechanical properties. The simulations demonstrate that, at the considered temperatures of 50 and 298 K, the elastic moduli and the compressive strength of tantalum metallic glass nanowires are both increasing with the increase of nanowire width, whereas no obvious size dependence of the tensile strength of metallic glass nanowires is observed. It is shown that the surface and internal stress states can be used for explaining the relation between mechanical properties of monatomic tantalum metallic glass nanowires and the wire diameter.

Abstract:Based on the AFM-bending experiments, a molecular dynamics (MD) bending simulation model is established which could accurately account for the full spectrum of the mechanical properties of NWs in a double clamped beam configuration, ranging from elasticity to plasticity and failure. It is found that, loading rate exerts significant influence to the mechanical behaviours of nanowires (NWs). Specifically, a loading rate lower than 10m/s is found reasonable for a homogonous bending deformation. Both loading rate and potential between the tip and the NW are found to play an important role in the adhesive phenomenon. The force versus displacement (F–d) curve from MD simulation is highly consistent in shapes with that from experiments. Symmetrical F–d curves during loading and unloading processes are observed, which reveal the linear-elastic and non-elastic bending deformation of NWs. The typical bending induced tensile-compressive features are observed. Meanwhile, the simulation results are excellently fitted by the classical Euler–Bernoulli beam theory with axial effect. It is concluded that, axial tensile force becomes crucial in bending deformation when the beam size is down to nanoscale for double clamped NWs. In addition, we find shorter NWs will have an earlier yielding and a larger yielding force. Mechanical properties (Young’s modulus and yield strength) obtained from both bending and tensile deformations are found comparable with each other. Specifically, the modulus is essentially similar under these two loading methods, while the yield strength during bending is observed larger than that during tension.

Abstract:We study silver nanowires as a model for the mechanical effects of ultrasonication. Their bending is caused by the outward push of shock waves against the inertia and fluid resistance. The structural analyses of a large number of cases reveal the principles of the mechanical effects on the freely suspended colloidal nanostructures. Abstract:The fracture strain, strength, and flexibility of ZnO nanowires (NWs) with a large range of diameters (85–542nm) are investigated at a quantitative level. Large strains up to 4%–7% have been obtained before the final elastic fracture, corresponding to fracture strengths close to the theoretical strength. The flexibility of a NW is discussed quantitatively in terms of the diameter and fracture strain. The fundamental mechanisms responsible for the observed exceptional properties are discussed.

Abstract:This paper presents the theoretical mechanical properties of Ag, Cu and Ni nanowires. To obtain theoretical mechanical properties of these metallic nanowires, a mechanical bending test of double clamped beam configuration (Gere and Timoshenko, 1990; Wu et al., 2005; Deb Nath and Kim, 2012) is carried out by the molecular dynamic simulation using embedded atom method (EAM) potential (Adams et al., 1989) by Verlet algorithm. Effects of temperatures on the force displacement relationship of the loading zone of different metallic nanowires are investigated. Young’s modulus and yield strength of different metallic nanowires are obtained from the force–displacement relationship at their loading points using the classical theory of continuum mechanics. Effect of wire diameters, temperatures on the Young’s modulus and yield strength of Ag, Cu, and Ni nanowires are briefly discussed. Using the centro symmetry parameters, nucleation and gliding of dislocations on the loading zone of different metallic nanowires are visualized to describe their plasticity and fracture in details.

Abstract:Deformation and fracture mechanisms of ultrathin Si nanowires (NWs), with diameters of down to similar to 9 nm, under uniaxial tension and bending were investigated by using in situ transmission electron microscopy and molecular dynamics simulations. It was revealed that the mechanical behavior of Si NWs had been closely related to the wire diameter, loading conditions, and stress states. Under tension, Si NWs deformed elastically until abrupt brittle fracture. The tensile strength showed a clear size dependence, and the greatest strength was up to 11.3 GPa. In contrast, under bending, the Si NWs demonstrated considerable plasticity. Under a bending strain of <14%, they could repeatedly be bent without cracking along with a crystalline-to-amorphous phase transition. Under a larger strain of >20%, the cracks nucleated on the tensed side and propagated from the wire surface, whereas on the compressed side a plastic deformation took place because of dislocation activities and an amorphous transition.

Abstract:Stiffness and ductility can be achieved by reducing the grain size of ceramics to the nanometer scale. However, the deformation mechanism of nanoceramics is still controversial due to technical limitations. In this paper, via synchrotron radial x-ray diffraction technology combined with a diamond anvil cell, the deformation behavior of nanosized titanium nitride (TiN) has been studied in situ under high-pressure conditions up to 41.3 GPa. Results show that the nano-TiN exhibits a much higher bulk modulus and yield strength than its bulk counterpart. Nano-TiN starts to yield at around 17.3 GPa and the maximum yield strength is approximately 8.7 GPa at 41.3 GPa. The presence of 110 and 001 texture in nanosized TiN was confirmed under pressure, indicating a strong activity of dislocation. This paper suggests that the reduction in grain size to the nanoscale improves both the stiffness and ductility of TiN via a dislocation-mediated mechanism. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevMaterials.8.036001 ©2024 American Physical Society

Nanomechanical and bending properties of nickel-titanium orthodontics archwires by depth-sensing indentation

Abstract:Introduction: This study aimed to identify the link between alloy microstructures and the nanomechanical properties of different orthodontic archwires containing nickel-titanium (NiTi) by sensing sliced areas. Previous studies have focused on analyzing and contrasting physical properties such as microhardness, elasticity modulus, and resistance; therefore, the trend is to consider microstructural characteristics in detail. Methods: Thirty archwire samples from 3 different commercial brands, American Orthodontics (AO), 3M Unitek (3M), and Borgatta, were analyzed through scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Berkovich nanoindentation, and microtensile microscopy to determine their chemical-crystallographic characteristics and nanomechanical and bending characteristics. Results: The identified formulations of AO and 3M had averages of 20 wt%, for Ni and 15.4 wt% for Ti, with lower concentrations for Borgatta. Alloys of Ni and Ti were distributed in different concentrates in the matrix of the archwires. The nanomechanical properties showed high values of the elastic modulus (82.8 ± 3.6 GPa) and hardness (6.4 ± 1.2 GPa) and a minor deformation degree of 0.38% for the AO wires, although the bending strength exhibited the highest values for 3M. No corrosion was observed with a prolonged hydrolytic attack on the surface of any of the wires (0.0-0.5 National Bureau of Standards units). Conclusions: The highest nanomechanical properties and bending characteristics were observed for wires with higher NiTi precipitate contents, which were distributed differently in the alloy overall in the matrix. The nanoindentations sensed in different areas evidenced different mechanical properties for NiTi depending on its concentrations of Ti and enucleations.
