Abstract:Covering-based rough set theory is a useful tool to deal with inexact, uncertain, or vague knowledge in information systems. Geometric lattice has been widely used in diverse fields, especially search algorithm design, which plays an important role in covering reductions. In this paper, we construct three geometric lattice structures of covering-based rough sets through matroids and study the relationship among them. First, a geometric lattice structure of covering-based rough sets is established through the transversal matroid induced by a covering. Then its characteristics, such as atoms, modular elements, and modular pairs, are studied. We also construct a one-to-one correspondence between this type of geometric lattices and transversal matroids in the context of covering-based rough sets. Second, we present three sufficient and necessary conditions for two types of covering upper approximation operators to be closure operators of matroids. We also represent two types of matroids through closure axioms and then obtain two geometric lattice structures of covering-based rough sets. Third, we study the relationship among these three geometric lattice structures. Some core concepts such as reducible elements in covering-based rough sets are investigated with geometric lattices. In a word, this work points out an interesting view, namely, geometric lattice, to study covering-based rough sets.

Abstract:The reduction of covering decision systems is an important problem in data mining, and covering-based rough sets serve as an efficient technique to process the problem. Geometric lattices have been widely used in many fields, especially greedy algorithm design which plays an important role in the reduction problems. Therefore, it is meaningful to combine coverings with geometric lattices to solve the optimization problems. In this paper, we obtain geometric lattices from coverings through matroids and then apply them to the issue of attribute reduction. First, a geometric lattice structure of a covering is constructed through transversal matroids. Then its atoms are studied and used to describe the lattice. Second, considering that all the closed sets of a finite matroid form a geometric lattice, we propose a dependence space through matroids and study the attribute reduction issues of the space, which realizes the application of geometric lattices to attribute reduction. Furthermore, a special type of information system is taken as an example to illustrate the application. In a word, this work points out an interesting view, namely, geometric lattice to study the attribute reduction issues of information systems.

Abstract:This paper presents new lower bounds for the lattice covering densities of simplices by studying the Degree-Diameter Problem for abelian Cayley digraphs. In particular, it proves that the density of any lattice covering of a tetrahedron is at least $25/18$ and the density of any lattice covering of a four-dimensional simplex is at least $343/264$.

Abstract:A lattice $\Lambda$ is said to be an extension of a sublattice $L$ of smaller rank if $L$ is equal to the intersection of $\Lambda$ with the subspace spanned by $L$. The goal of this paper is to initiate a systematic study of the geometry of lattice extensions. We start by proving the existence of a small-determinant extension of a given lattice, and then look at successive minima and covering radius. To this end, we investigate extensions (within an ambient lattice) preserving the successive minima of the given lattice, as well as extensions preserving the covering radius. We also exhibit some interesting arithmetic properties of deep holes of planar lattices.

Abstract:Based on Lipski’s approach dealing with incomplete information tables, we describe lower and upper approximations using coverings under incomplete information and similarity of values. Lots of coverings, called possible coverings, on a set of attributes are derived in an incomplete information table with similarity of values, although the covering is unique in a complete information table. The family of possible coverings has a lattice structure with the minimum and maximum elements. This is true for the family of maximal descriptions, but is not for the family of minimal descriptions and the family of sets of close friends. As was shown by Lipski, what we can obtain from an information table with incomplete information is the lower and upper bounds of information granules. Using only two coverings: the minimum and maximum possible ones, we obtain the lower and upper bounds of lower and upper approximations. Therefore, there is no difficulty of the computational complexity in our approach.

Abstract:The Dirichlet–Voronoi cell and parallelohedron are fundamental concepts in Geometry. In particular, they do play important roles in the study of ball packing and ball covering. However, to study packing and covering of general convex bodies, they are no longer so useful (see Theorem 0). By introducing Minkowski bisectors and Minkowski cells, this paper explores a new way to study the density $\theta ^*(C)$ of the thinnest lattice covering of $\mathbb {E}^n$ by a centrally symmetric convex body C. Several basic results (Theorems 2 and 4, Corollary 1) and unexpected geometric phenomena (Theorem 0, Example 1, Remark 4) about Minkowski bisectors, Minkowski cells and covering densities are discovered.

Abstract:In this note we prove an effective characterization of when two finite-degree covers of a connected, orientable surface of negative Euler characteristic are isomorphic in terms of which curves have simple elevations, weakening the hypotheses to consider curves with explicitly bounded self-intersection number. As an application we show that for sufficiently large N, the set of unmarked traces associated to simple closed curves in a generically chosen representation to SL(N, R) distinguishes between pairs of non-isomorphic covers.

A ranked, interval-connected lattice is shown to be rank-connected, but a rank-connected lattice need not be interval-connected. Abstract:Let $K$ be a convex body in $\mathbb{R}^n$, let $L$ be a lattice with covolume one, and let $\eta>0$. We say that $K$ and $L$ form an $\eta$-smooth cover if each point $x \in \mathbb{R}^n$ is covered by $(1 \pm \eta) vol(K)$ translates of $K$ by $L$. We prove that for any positive $\sigma, \eta$, asymptotically as $n \to \infty$, for any $K$ of volume $n^{3+\sigma}$, one can find a lattice $L$ for which $L, K$ form an $\eta$-smooth cover. Moreover, this property is satisfied with high probability for a lattice chosen randomly, according to the Haar-Siegel measure on the space of lattices. Similar results hold for random construction A lattices, albeit with a worse power law, provided the ratio between the covering and packing radii of $\mathbb{Z}^n$ with respect to $K$ is at most polynomial in $n$. Our proofs rely on a recent breakthrough by Dhar and Dvir on the discrete Kakeya problem.

Abstract:Lattice, as a basic object in Mathematics, has been studied by many prominent figures, including Gauss, Hermite, Voronio, Minkowski, Davenport, Hlawka, Rogers and many others still active today. It is one of the most important cornerstones of Geometry of Numbers, a classic branch of Number Theory. During recent decades, this pure mathematical concept has achieved remarkable applications in Cryptography, in particular its algorithm approaches. The main purpose of this talk is to demonstrate some basic mathematical problems and results (old and new) about lattices, which are probably useful in Cryptography in the future. These problems reflect some of the main interests of the mathematicians about lattices.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the covering dimension of finite distributive lattices. By the Birkhoff's representation theorem for finite distributive lattices, we prove that for any finite distributive lattice L , , where is the set of all maximal elements of join-irreducible elements of L . Based on the relationships between the covering dimension of topological spaces and that of bounded distributive lattices, we characterize the covering dimension of finite spaces. Finally, we study the covering dimension of the linear sum, Cartesian product, lexicographic product and rectangular product of two finite distributive lattices.

Abstract:We propose a conjecture regarding the integrally closedness of lattice polytopes with large lattice lengths. We demonstrate that a lattice simplex in dimension 3 (resp. 4) with lattice length of at least 2 (resp. 3 and no edge has lattice length 5) can be covered by dilated simplices of the form $sQ$, where integer $s\ge 2$ (resp. 3) and $Q$ is a lattice simplex. The covering property implies these simplices are integrally closed. As an application, we derive a simple criterion for the projective normality of ample line bundles on weighted projective spaces of dimension 3 (resp. 4). Along the way, we discover certain unexpected phenomenon.

Abstract:It has been conjectured that whenever an optimal covering array exists there is also a uniform covering array with the same parameters and this is true for all known optimal covering arrays. When used as a test suite, the application context may have pairs of parameters that must be avoided and Covering arrays avoiding forbidden edges (CAFE) are a generalization accommodating this requirement. We prove that there is an arc-transitive, highly symmetric constraint graph where the unique optimal covering array avoiding forbidden edges is not uniform. This does not refute the conjecture but it does show that placing even highly symmetric constraints on covering arrays can force non-uniformity of optimal arrays.
