Abstract:This paper presents new lower bounds for the lattice covering densities of simplices by studying the Degree-Diameter Problem for abelian Cayley digraphs. In particular, it proves that the density of any lattice covering of a tetrahedron is at least $25/18$ and the density of any lattice covering of a four-dimensional simplex is at least $343/264$.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a convex body in $\mathbb{R}^n$, let $L$ be a lattice with covolume one, and let $\eta>0$. We say that $K$ and $L$ form an $\eta$-smooth cover if each point $x \in \mathbb{R}^n$ is covered by $(1 \pm \eta) vol(K)$ translates of $K$ by $L$. We prove that for any positive $\sigma, \eta$, asymptotically as $n \to \infty$, for any $K$ of volume $n^{3+\sigma}$, one can find a lattice $L$ for which $L, K$ form an $\eta$-smooth cover. Moreover, this property is satisfied with high probability for a lattice chosen randomly, according to the Haar-Siegel measure on the space of lattices. Similar results hold for random construction A lattices, albeit with a worse power law, provided the ratio between the covering and packing radii of $\mathbb{Z}^n$ with respect to $K$ is at most polynomial in $n$. Our proofs rely on a recent breakthrough by Dhar and Dvir on the discrete Kakeya problem.

On Covering Simplices by Dilations in Dimensions 3 and 4

Abstract:We propose a conjecture regarding the integrally closedness of lattice polytopes with large lattice lengths. We demonstrate that a lattice simplex in dimension 3 (resp. 4) with lattice length of at least 2 (resp. 3 and no edge has lattice length 5) can be covered by dilated simplices of the form $sQ$, where integer $s\ge 2$ (resp. 3) and $Q$ is a lattice simplex. The covering property implies these simplices are integrally closed. As an application, we derive a simple criterion for the projective normality of ample line bundles on weighted projective spaces of dimension 3 (resp. 4). Along the way, we discover certain unexpected phenomenon.

Simultaneous Packing and Covering in the Euclidean Plane

Abstract:In this article we study the simultaneous packing and covering constants of two-dimensional centrally symmetric convex domains. Besides an identity result between translative case and lattice case and a general upper bound, exact values for some special domains are determined. Similar to Mahler and Reinhardt's result about packing densities, we show that the simultaneous packing and covering constant of an octagon is larger than that of a circle.

Abstract:The Dirichlet–Voronoi cell and parallelohedron are fundamental concepts in Geometry. In particular, they do play important roles in the study of ball packing and ball covering. However, to study packing and covering of general convex bodies, they are no longer so useful (see Theorem 0). By introducing Minkowski bisectors and Minkowski cells, this paper explores a new way to study the density $\theta ^*(C)$ of the thinnest lattice covering of $\mathbb {E}^n$ by a centrally symmetric convex body C. Several basic results (Theorems 2 and 4, Corollary 1) and unexpected geometric phenomena (Theorem 0, Example 1, Remark 4) about Minkowski bisectors, Minkowski cells and covering densities are discovered.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the first nontrivial lower bound on the translative covering density of tetrahedra. To this end, we show the lower bound, in any translative covering of tetrahedra, on the density relative to a given cube. The resulting lower bound on the translative covering density of tetrahedra is $1+1.227\times10^{-3}$.

On coverings by Minkowski balls in the plane and a duality

Abstract:Lattice coverings in the real plane by Minkowski balls are studied. We exploit the duality of admissible lattices of Minkowski balls and inscribed convex symmetric hexagons of these balls. An explicit moduli space of the areas of these hexagons is constructed, giving the values of the determinants of corresponding covering lattices. Low and upper bounds for covering constants of Minkowski balls are given. The best known value of covering density of Minkowski ball is obtained. One conjecture and one problem are formulated.

For the covering case we get a negative answer. For the packing case we get a combinatorial version which seems to be important for its own interest.

Abstract:This paper proves that the simultaneous lattice packing-covering constant of an octahedron is $7/6$. In other words, $7/6$ is the smallest positive number $r$ such that for every octahedron $O$ centered at the origin there is a lattice $\Lambda$ such that $O+\Lambda$ is a packing in $\mathbb{E}^3$ and $rO+\Lambda$ is a covering of $\mathbb{E}^3$.

Lower bounds and integrality gaps in simplicial decomposition

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{K}$ be a finite pure simplicial $d$-complex, with oriented facets $\{F_i\}$, which is boundaryless in the sense that $\sum\partial F_i=0$. We call such a $\mathcal{K}$ an \textit{admissible $d$-complex}. Given an admissible $d$-complex, one can ask for the smallest collection $\{T_i\}$ of oriented $(d+1)$-simplices on the vertices of $\mathcal{K}$ which decomposes $\mathcal{K}$ in the sense that $\sum \partial T_i = \mathcal{K}$. Let the minimum size of such a collection be $V_\mathbb{Z}(\mathcal{K})$, and let $V_\mathbb{Q}(\mathcal{K})$ be the relaxed analog where fractional $(d+1)$-simplices may be used. We explain how these quantities may be computed via integer and linear programming, and show how lower bounds may be obtained by exploiting LP-duality. We then prove that $V_\mathbb{Q}$ and $V_\mathbb{Z}$ are both additive under disjoint union and connected sum along a $d$-simplex. The remainder of the paper explores integrality gaps between $V_\mathbb{Z}$ and $V_\mathbb{Q}$ in dimension 1, where we share what we believe is the simplest admissible complex with an integrality gap; and in dimension 2, where we collect some results on integrality gaps for triangulations of the 2-sphere for a companion paper with Zili Wang and Peter Doyle.

Abstract:Consider a situation with $n$ agents or players where some of the players form a coalition with a certain collective objective. Simple games are used to model systems that can decide whether coalitions are successful (winning) or not (losing). A simple game can be viewed as a monotone boolean function. The dimension of a simple game is the smallest positive integer $d$ such that the simple game can be expressed as the intersection of $d$ threshold functions where each threshold function uses a threshold and $n$ weights. Taylor and Zwicker have shown that $d$ is bounded from above by the number of maximal losing coalitions. We present two new upper bounds both containing the Taylor/Zwicker-bound as a special case. The Taylor/Zwicker-bound imply an upper bound of ${n \choose n/2}$. We improve this upper bound significantly by showing constructively that $d$ is bounded from above by the cardinality of any binary covering code with length $n$ and covering radius $1$. This result supplements a recent result where Olsen et al. showed how to construct simple games with dimension $|C|$ for any binary constant weight SECDED code $C$ with length $n$. Our result represents a major step in the attempt to close the dimensionality gap for simple games.

Abstract:A Gilbert–Varshamov-type bound for Euclidean packings was recently found by Nebe and Xing. In this present paper, we derive a Gilbert–Varshamov-type bound for lattice packings by generalizing Rush's approach of combining p-ary codes with the lattice pZn. Specifically, we will exploit suitable sublattices of Zn as well as lattices of number fields in our construction. Our approach allows us to compute the center densities of lattices of moderately large dimensions which compare favorably with the best known densities given in the literature as well as the densities derived directly via Rush's method.

Abstract:A lattice $\Lambda$ is said to be an extension of a sublattice $L$ of smaller rank if $L$ is equal to the intersection of $\Lambda$ with the subspace spanned by $L$. The goal of this paper is to initiate a systematic study of the geometry of lattice extensions. We start by proving the existence of a small-determinant extension of a given lattice, and then look at successive minima and covering radius. To this end, we investigate extensions (within an ambient lattice) preserving the successive minima of the given lattice, as well as extensions preserving the covering radius. We also exhibit some interesting arithmetic properties of deep holes of planar lattices.

Abstract:Chvátal's conjecture on the intersecting family of the faces of the simplicial complex is a long-standing problem in combinatorics. Snevily gave an affirmative answer to this conjecture for near-cone complex. Woodroofe gave Erdős-Ko-Rado type theorem for near-cone complex by using algebraic shift method. Motivated by these results, we concern with the restricted intersecting family for the simplicial complex. First, we give an upper bound for the cardinality of the restricted intersecting family of the faces of the simplicial complex. Furthermore, we prove that if L={l1,l2,…,ls} is a set of s positive integers, suppose that ▵ is a near-cone simplicial complex with an apex vertex v and F={F1,…,Fm} is a family of the faces of ▵ such that |Fi∩Fj|∈L for every 1≤i≠j≤m, thenm≤∑i=−1s−1fi(link△(v)), which generalizes Snevily's two theorems. We also propose a conjecture that this upper bound holds for all simplicial complexes. Finally, applying these theorems to certain simplicial complex, we can deduce the upper bounds for the cardinalities of the restricted intersecting families of the independent set of the graph, the set partition, the r-separated sets and the King Arthur and his Knight Table.
Maximal integral simplices with no interior integer points

Abstract:In this paper, we consider integral maximal lattice-free simplices. Such simplices have integer vertices and contain integer points in the relative interior of each of their facets, but no integer point is allowed in the full interior. In dimension three, we show that any integral maximal lattice-free simplex is equivalent to one of seven simplices up to unimodular transformation. For higher dimensions, we demonstrate that the set of integral maximal lattice-free simplices with vertices lying on the coordinate axes is finite. This gives rise to a conjecture that the total number of integral maximal lattice-free simplices is finite for any dimension.

Abstract: We present estimates of number of simplices of given dimension of classical compact Lie groups. As in the previous work \cite{GMP2} the approach is a combination of an estimate of number of vertices with a use of valuation of the covering type by cohomological argument of \cite{GMP} and application of the recent versions of the Lower Bound Theorem of combinatorial topology. For the case of exceptional Lie groups we made a complete calculation using the description of their cohomology rings given by the first and third author. For infinite increasing series of Lie groups of growing dimension $d$ the rate of growth of number of simplices of highest dimension is given which extends onto the case of simplices of (fixed) codimension $d-i$.
