Abstract:Environmental and occupational exposure to heavy metals is an emerging health concern. Microfluidic based biosensor technologies are expecting to provide inexpensive, field-deployable tools for rapid, on-site detection of heavy metals. Accurate, fast, and affordable analysis of blood components is the prime interest for biosensor applications in medicine research. Plasma separation is important for specific downstream detection of heavy metals from patient bloods, such as preventing contamination of the plasma with blood cells' DNA and hemoglobin. We have developed a microfluidic device for separating the plasma from the whole human blood. In addition, we demonstrated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) on-chip microvalves for lab on chip (LOC) integration potentially for multiplex heavy metal detections.
