Abstract:One-dimensional (1D) uniform multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)@Si/SiOx@C nanocomposites were prepared by the magnesiothermic reduction of MWCNT@SiO2 nanocables and subsequent carbon coating process. Through simply altering the acid-treatment conditions, SiOx were reserved on the surface of MWCNTs to seal and fix the Si nanoparticles, along with the carbon coating layer, the reducted Si nanoparticles (Si NPs) were entirely encapsulated in the 1D coaxial nanocomposites. Due to the multiple volume expansion limit effects of inner Si nanoparticles, the cycling stability has been greatly improved. When worked as anodes for lithium-ion batteries, the MWCNTs@Si/SiOx@C electrode exhibits better electrochemical properties than bulk Si and MWCNTs, as well as an extending cycle life of 500 cycles in comparsion to our previous MWCNTs@Si nano composites. It is believed that the MWCNTs can provide structural support and enhance the electronic mobility, while the SiOx and carbon buffer component would anchor the Si NPs firmly and accommodate the volume expansion of Si.

Abstract:The demand for lithium-ion batteries with both high power and high-energy density has attracted widespread attention as energy-storage devices for the increasing demand of consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and grid-scale storage. However, the fabrication of an advanced electrode architecture with high areal capacity, excellent cycling stability, and superior rate performance remains a long-term challenge in the development of advanced electrochemical energy-storage devices. Herein, we design an effective and general strategy to spontaneously encapsulate Ge nanoparticles into a three-dimensional double hydrophilic N-doped ultrathin graphite/void/hydrophobic ultrathin graphite tube network (Ge@3D-DHGT) with control over the position for large specific capacity (1338 mA h g-1), high rate performance (752 mA h g-1 at 40 C), and superior cycling stability (up to 1000 cycles). Toward the practical application, the as-prepared Ge@3D-DHGT electrode showed a large areal capacity (10 mA h cm-2 under 8 mA cm-2), which provides a highly promising anode with both high capacity and high rate performance. Importantly, this work provides an approach to fabricate high-areal-capacity anodes with long cycling stability and rapid charge-discharge properties with practical applications in advanced rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:The combination of high-capacity and long-term cycling stability is an important factor for practical application of anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Herein, NixMnyCozO nanowire (x + y + z = 1)/carbon nanotube (CNT) composite microspheres with a 3D interconnected conductive network structure (3DICN-NCS) are prepared via a spray-drying method. The 3D interconnected conductive network structure can facilitate the penetration of electrolyte into the microspheres and provide excellent connectivity for rapid Li+ ion/electron transfer in the microspheres, thus greatly reducing the concentration polarization in the electrode. Additionally, the empty spaces among the nanowires in the network accommodate microsphere volume expansion associated with Li+ intercalation during the cycling process, which improves the cycling stability of the electrode. The CNTs distribute uniformly in the microspheres, which act as conductive frameworks to greatly improve the electrical conductivity of the microspheres. As expected, the prepared 3DICN-NCS demonstrates excellent electrochemical performance, showing a high capacity of 1277 mAh g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) after 2000 cycles and 790 mAh g(-1) at 5 A g(-1) after 1000 cycles. Abstract:Hierarchical structured carbon@MoS2 (C@MoS2) microspheres and nanospheres composed of carbon-sandwiched monolayered MoS2 building blocks are synthesized through a facile one-pot polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) micelle-assisted hydrothermal route. The dimension and carbon content of C@MoS2 spheres are effectively controlled by singly adjusting the concentration of PVP, which plays the dual functions of soft-template and carbon source. As the anode materials of Li-ion batteries, C@MoS2 nanospheres present considerably higher capacity, better rate behavior and cycling stability than C@MoS2 microspheres. The reasons are attributed to the unique interconnected nanospherical morphology and the internal hierarchical construction of C@MoS2 nanospheres with expanded MoS2/carbon interlayer spacing.

Abstract:We demonstrate the synthesis of three-dimensional Cu-Ge core-shell nanowire array electrodes by directly depositing Ge on the surface of pre-synthesized Cu nanowire arrays via an rf-sputtering method. When used as anodes of lithium-ion batteries, the Cu-Ge nanowire arrays display a high capacity of 1419 mAh g(-1) at 0.5 C after 40 cycles and 734 mAh g(-1) at 60 C after 80 cycles, which is better than planar electrodes. The improved performance can be attributed to the good electrical contact, fast electron transport and good strain accommodation of the nanowire array electrodes. The effect of the thickness of Ge layer on the electrochemical performance of the three-dimensional electrodes has also been investigated.

Abstract:Developing high performance anode materials with fast reaction kinetics and cycling stability is a key for the next-generation lithium-ion batteries. Herein, a three-dimensional cross-linked porous MnO/ carbon tubes composite (MnO/) was designed and fabricated for lithium ions storage. In this composite, the MnO/Sb hybrid nanowires consisted of MnO and Sb nanoparticles were embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon tubes to construct coaxial porous composite nanowires, which were further assembled into a three-dimensional cross-linked network. This unique composition composed of both conversion-type MnO and alloying-type Sb makes the MnO/Sb nanowires possess high specific capacity and fast kinetics. Meanwhile, the advanced structure that collaboratively combines porous structure, exterior carbon tubes, one-dimensional morphology, and three-dimensional cross-linked network can greatly facilitate the rapid transfer of ions and electrons and ensure the structural integrity of the composite. As a result, the MnO/ demonstrated fast reaction kinetics and stable structure, therefore, presenting superior rate capability (217 and 150 mA h g−1 at 5 and 10 A g−1) and long cycling life (592 mA h g−1 after 1100 cycles at 1 A g−1). This unique design endows the MnO/ composite with a practical application potential and can be used to improve other conversion/alloying anode materials.

Abstract:Magnetic transition-metal oxides show great prospect as alternatives to prevail anodic carbonaceous substances for lithium ion battery in virtue of their splendid theoretical capacity. However, in addition to their intrinsic poor electronic conductivity, the severe agglomeration of the forming magnetic metal nanoparticles during discharging will deteriorate their actual electrochemical performance in a strong magnetic field environment. Here, we demonstrate a 3D spatially-confining magnetic anode to settle all these dilemmas, in which conversion-type magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles with a thin carbon encapsulation layer are anchoring onto 3D nickel nanotube arrays skeleton (Ni/Fe 3 O 4 @C NTAs). The carbon shell spatially confines the agglomeration of Fe nanoparticles and maintains the exceptional integrity of structure. The Ni/Fe 3 O 4 @C NTAs anode exhibits high-capacity lithium storage (∼1286 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C) and superior rate/cycle capability (retaining ∼97 % of initial reversible value at 1 C after long-term 1000 cycles).

Abstract:Hollow multi-shelled spherical Co 3 O 4 /CNTs composite was prepared by a facile MOF-assisted strategy by introducing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) directly into the precursor. The hierarchical porous structure of the obtained multi-shelled Co 3 O 4 nanospheres can effectively alleviate volume change and facilitate the infiltration of electrolyte into the interior. The interconnected CNTs can reduce the electrochemical polarization by improving the conductivity of the body material. As an anode for lithium ion batteries, the as-synthesized Co 3 O 4 /CNTs composite exhibits superior lithium ion storage performance. A high reversible specific capacity of 653.1 mAh g −1 was obtained after 500 cycles at 1000 mA g −1 , suggesting a significant inspiration for fabricating application for advanced electrochemical devices.

Abstract:3-Dimensional hierarchically porous ZnFe2O4/C composites with interconnected macropores and co-continuous hollow skeletons are facilely synthesized and used as anode materials for Li-ion batteries. The interconnected macropores impede the agglomeration of primary particles and buffer the volumetric variations, hollow mesoporous skeletons not only improve the interfacial contact area between electrode and electrolyte but also facilitate lithium ions transfer rate. Moreover, N-doped carbon layer further enhances the conductivity and mechanical strength of skeletons, as well as accelerates electron transfer during repeated discharge and charge process. The as-prepared 3-dimensional hierarchically porous ZnFe2O4/C composites possess excellent Li-ion storage properties, delivering a high reversible capacity of 972 mAh g(-1) at 200 mA g(-1) after 100 cycles and a decent specific capacity of 711 mAh g(-1) even at a large current density of 1000 mA g(-1) after 400 cycles. These values are among the highest reported for ZnFe2O4-based materials with different morphologies and nanostructures. The resultant ZnFe2O4/C composites display the potential practical application for high-performance Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:The Hoberman sphere is a stable and stretchable spatial structure with a unique design concept, which can be taken as the ideal prototype of the internal mechanical/conductive skeleton for the anode with large volume change. Herein, Mn3O4 nanoparticles are interlaced with a Hoberman sphere-like interconnected carbon nanotube (CNT) network via a facile self-assembly strategy in which Mn3O4 can "locally expand" in the CNT network, limit the volume expansion to the interior space, and maintain a stable outer surface of the hybrid particle. Furthermore, an ultrathin uniform ALD-coated TiO2 shell is adopted to stabilize the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), provide high electron conductivity and lithium ion (Li+) diffusivity with lithiated LixTiO2, and enhance the reaction kinetics of the Mn3O4 by an "electron-density enhancement effect". With this design, the Mn3O4@CNT/TiO2 exhibits a high capacity of 1064 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1, a stable cycling stability over 200 cycles, a superior rate capability, and a commercial-level areal capacity of 4.9 mAh cm-2. In this way, a novel electrode design strategy is achieved by the Hoberman sphere-like CNT design along with the in situ porous formation, which can not only achieve a high-performance anode for LIBs but also can be widely adapted in a variety of advanced electrode materials for alkali metal ion batteries.

Abstract:Hierarchical porous metal oxides arrays is critical for development of advanced energy storage devices. Herein, we report a facile template-assisted electro-deposition plus glucose decomposition method for synthesis of multilayer CoO/C hollow spheres arrays. The CoO/C arrays consist of multilayer interconnected hollow composite spheres with diameters of ∼350nm as well as thin walls of ∼20nm. Hierarchical hollow spheres architecture with 3D porous networks are achieved. As cathode of high-rate hybrid batteries, the multilayer CoO/C hollow sphere arrays exhibit impressive enhanced performances with a high capacity (73.5mAhg−1 at 2Ag−1), and stable high-rate cycling life (70mAhg−1 after 12,500 cycles at 2Ag−1). The improved electrochemical performance is owing to the composite hollow-sphere architecture with high contact area between the active materials and electrolyte as well as fast ion/electron transportation path.
A Superb 3D Composite Lithium Metal Anode Prepared by In-Situ Lithiation of Sulfurized Polyacrylonitrile

Abstract:Lithium metal has been regarded as the most promising anode for the next generation high energy-density batteries. However, detrimental side reactions with electrolyte, uncontrollable lithium dendrite growth, distinct volume expansion and fragile solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer lead to low coulombic efficiency (CE), rapid battery failure and even safety hazards, which hinders its practical application. Herein, we propose a novel composite anode which embeds Li metal particles into a Li+/electron hybrid conductive framework and is reinforced by CNTs. Sulfurized pyrolyzed poly(acrylonitrile) (S@pPAN), which is extensively studied as superior cathode materials, is creatively adopted to render abundant Li3N and Li2S on the surface of the Li particles and in the free-space. The in-situ formed hybrid framework not only provides a rapid Li+ transfer channel throughout the electrode, but also suppresses the Li dendrite growth and inhibits the volume expansion. With further assistance of lithiophilic nano-MgO, the composite anode achieved dense and reversible Li plating/striping. As a result, a long cycle life of more than 800 hours with 10 mAh cm(-2) and excellent electrode kinetics are obtained for symmetric cells. Moreover, the full cells coupled with S@pPAN and LiFePO4 cathodes deliver a long and stable cycle life. The rational 3D composite anode design provides a feasible strategy to build high performance Li metal batteries.

Abstract:On the basis of the advantages of ideal cycling stability, high discharge voltage (1.65 V), and excellent reversibility, more and more attention has been focused on TiNb2O7 (marked as TNO) as an anode material candidate for lithium-ion batteries. However, the poor electronic conductivity and low ionic diffusion rate intrinsically restrict its practical use. Herein, we first synthesize the TNO/C composite microspheres with three-dimensionally (marked as 3D) electro-conductive carbon network and abundant nanoporous structure by a simple spray-drying method. The microspheres are constructed by irregularly primary cubic nanoparticle units with size of 100-200 nm. The nanopores throughout the microspheres range from 1 to 50 nm. As an anode material, the prepared TNO/C composite microspheres demonstrate a prominent charge/discharge capacity of 323.2/326 mA h g(-1) after 300 cycles at 0.25 C (1 C = 388 mA g(-1)) and 259.9/262.5 mA h g(-1) after 1000 long cycles at a high current density of 5 C, revealing the ideal reversible capacity and long cycling life. Meanwhile, the TNO/C composite microspheres present ideal rate performance, showing the discharge capacity of 120 mA h g(-1) at 30 C after 10 cycles. The super electrochemical performance could be attributed to the 3D electro-conductive carbon network and nanoporous structure. The nanopores facilitate the permeation of electrolyte into the intercontacting regions of the anode materials. Carbon layers disperse uniformly throughout the 3D microspheres, effectively improving the electrical conductivity of the electrode. Hence, the prepared TNO/C composite microspheres have great potential to be used as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Germanium (Ge) has a high specific capacity when used as an alloying anode in lithium ion batteries. Despite this, the large volume of expansion that occurs during charging and discharging has hampered its practical application. In order to improve the stability of the alloying anode, a three-dimensional (3D) Germanium/carbon porous composite was produced. In situ X-ray diffraction and electrochemical dilatometers are used to study the alloying electrode's structure evolution during cycling, revealing that the carbon matrix and linked porosity structure provide a high reversible of lithiation and delithiation, resulting in limited electrode volume expansion and high stability. Moveover, combined with a high nickel content cathode, i.e., LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2, achieved a specific energy density of 396 Wh kg-1 and a stable cycling performance, which shows the potential application in lithium-ion full cell.

Abstract:MOF-derived 3D hollow porous carbon/graphene composites (HPCGCs) are fabricated through a facile solvent method with subsequent carbonization. In a typical synthesis process, hollow zeoliticimidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles are prepared on graphene oxide layers to set up a 3D structure. After carbonization, hollow porous carbon/graphene composites are synthesized, which serve as active materials in lithium-ion battery anodes and exhibit high specific capacity, promising cycling stability and rate capability. The superior performance is attributed to the synergistic effects between hollow carbon nanoparticles and graphene layers within the 3D structure of the composites, which enable fast transportation of both Li+ and electrons. The composites also have structural integrity to ensure stable long-time cycling. Consequently, the composites present a specific capacity of 849.5 mA h g−1 at 0.2 A g−1 after 200 cycles and of 403.1 mA h g−1 at 5 A g−1 after 1000 cycles in the cycling test. Besides, they present a specific capacity of 200.6 mA h g−1 at 10 A g−1 in the rate capability test.

In this paper, the Ge/3DPG composites with Ge nanoparticles uniformly dispersed in 3D interconnected porous graphene (3DPG) skeleton are successfully prepared using a template-assisted in-situ reduction method. The unique 3D interconnected porous graphene can not only enhance the electronic conductivity and reaction kinetics of the materials, but also provide sufficient buffer space to effectively mitigate the volume expansion during cycling and strengthen the structural integrity. Moreover, the small-sized Ge nanoparticles in close conjunction with the 3D graphene can boost the surface-controlled reaction of the electrode, which contributes to a fast charge–discharge rate capability. The Ge/3DPG composite with optimized Ge/graphene mass ratio delivers high reversible specific capacity (1102 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at 0.2 C), outstanding rate capability (494 mAh g−1 at 5 C), and admirable cycling stability (85.3% of capacity retention after 250 cycles at 0.5 C). This work provides a significant inspiration for the design and fabrication of advanced Ge-based anode materials for next-generation high-performance LIBs.

Uniformly Confined Germanium Quantum Dots in 3D Ordered Porous Carbon Framework for High‐Performance Li‐ion Battery

Abstract:Although abundant germanium (Ge)‐based anode materials have been explored to obtain high specific capacity, high rate performance, and long charge/discharge lifespans for lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs), their performances are still far from satisfactory due to the intrinsic defects of Ge and the relatively intricate anode structure. To work out these issues, a 3D ordered porous N‐doped carbon framework with Ge quantum dots uniformly embedded (3DOP Ge@NC) as a binder‐free anode for LIBs via a facile polystyrene colloidal nanospheres template‐confined strategy is proposed. This unique structure not only facilitates Li‐ion diffusion and electron transport that can guarantee rapid de/alloying reaction, but also alleviates the huge volume changes during reactions and improves cycling stability. Notably, the resulting anode delivers a high specific reversible capacity (≈1160 mA h g−1 at 1 A g−1), superior rate properties (exceeding 500 mA h g−1 at 40 A g−1), and excellent cycling stability (over 90% capacity retention after 1200 cycles even at 5 A g−1). Furthermore, both the 3DOP Ge@NC anode with high areal mass loading (up to 8 mg cm−2) and the full cell coupled with LiFePO4 cathode display high capacity and cycling stability, further indicative of the favorable real‐life application prospects for high‐energy LIBs.
