Abstract:Amorphous germanium@C and germanium chalcogenides@C composites have been fabricated via a simply developed synthetic route. Taking advantage of the carbon coating of these materials, they all exhibit excellent Li storage properties as anode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). Typically, Ge@C presents a capacity of 672 mAh g(-1) after 80 cycles at current density of 0.5 A g(-1). The capacities of GeS@C are about 604 mAh g(-1) over 180 cycles at 0.2 A g(-1) and 365 mAh g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1) after 1000 cycles, respectively. As for GeSe@C electrode, it exhibit high capacities of nearly 780 mAh g(-1) at 0.2 A g(-1) over 180 cycles and 562 mAh g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1) over 60 cycles.

Abstract:The demand for lithium-ion batteries with both high power and high-energy density has attracted widespread attention as energy-storage devices for the increasing demand of consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and grid-scale storage. However, the fabrication of an advanced electrode architecture with high areal capacity, excellent cycling stability, and superior rate performance remains a long-term challenge in the development of advanced electrochemical energy-storage devices. Herein, we design an effective and general strategy to spontaneously encapsulate Ge nanoparticles into a three-dimensional double hydrophilic N-doped ultrathin graphite/void/hydrophobic ultrathin graphite tube network (Ge@3D-DHGT) with control over the position for large specific capacity (1338 mA h g-1), high rate performance (752 mA h g-1 at 40 C), and superior cycling stability (up to 1000 cycles). Toward the practical application, the as-prepared Ge@3D-DHGT electrode showed a large areal capacity (10 mA h cm-2 under 8 mA cm-2), which provides a highly promising anode with both high capacity and high rate performance. Importantly, this work provides an approach to fabricate high-areal-capacity anodes with long cycling stability and rapid charge-discharge properties with practical applications in advanced rechargeable batteries.
C porous microparticles as high-rate anode materials for lithium-ion batteries

Abstract:We report the synthesis of SiGe@C porous microparticles (PoSiGe@C) via the decomposition of Mg2Si/ Mg2Ge composites, acid pickling and subsequent carbon coating processes, respectively. The content of Ge can be tuned by the initial ratio of Mg2Si and Mg2Ge in the composite. The as-synthesized PoSiGe@C has been used as the anode material of lithium-ion batteries, which shows an enhanced cyclic and rate performance compared to bare Si, PoSiGe as well as PoSi@C porous microparticles. Briefly, the PoSiGe@C delivers a good cycling stability with 70% capacity retention after 400 cycles and only 0.075% capacity loss per cycle at the current density of 0.8 A g . Furthermore, super rate capability is also expressed by the PoSiGe@C. The unique porous structure, and synergistic effect of Si and Ge, may lead to the inherent high lithium-ion diffusivity and electrical conductivity of Ge, and good volume alleviation, which results in the good electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Aiming at the key issues of low intrinsic conductivity and large volume expansion during the cycling existed in high-capacity Ge anode material system, a micro/nano structured Ge@C hybrid material was designed and prepared through a facile and controllable method. The as-prepared micron conductive cage with a dodecahedral structure is composed of interconnected ultra-thin walled Ge nanotubes encapsulated in the porous N-containing carbon network, which can not only reserve more buffer space for the volume expansion of Ge and assist in building a stable SEI film during the cycling, improves the conductivity and stability of the material, but also provide a rich and penetrating channel for the transmission of ions, realizing high dynamics. When applied to the anode of lithium-ion battery, the three-dimensional micro/nano structured germanium-based hybrid material (Ge-3D@C) delivers a high initial specific capacity of 1500 mAh g −1 at 0.2 A g −1 , and after 350 cycles, it can still maintain a high reversible specific capacity of 1147 mAh g −1 . Even at high current densities of 1 A g −1 and 2 A g −1 , high reversible specific capacities of 752 and 631 mAh g −1 can still be obtained. Importantly, the rational design can be used to prepare Ge hybrids doped with other metals or metal oxides, as well as different structures, by adjusting the layer materials and the types of germanates, so as to adapt to different application environments.

Abstract:We demonstrate the synthesis of Si@C three-dimensional porous structures derived from commercial magnesium silicide (Mg2Si) powder via simple annealing and acid pickling processes. When used as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries, the Si@C three-dimensional porous structures can give more lithiation sites and accommodate large volume changes during the lithiation/delithiation process, which leads to a high capacity and good cycling stability. As a result, a high reversible capacity of similar to 1700 mA h g(-1) was obtained at a current of 0.2 C (800 mA g(-1), 1 C = 4 A g(-1)) even after 70 cycles. The synthetic route described herein is a low-cost and large-scale method to produce high-performance Si anodes, which may facilitate their commercial applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate the synthesis of SiGe-based three-dimensional (3D) porous nanostructures via a template-assisted method. When tested as electrode in lithium-ion batteries, it exhibits a reversible capacity as high as 1311 mAh g−1 after 45 cycles at a current density of 4 A g−1. Even at a super high current rate of 16 A g−1, the electrode can deliver a stable capacity of about 1047 mAh g−1. The great cycling performance and superior rate capability can be attributed to the good electrical contact, fast electron transport and good strain accommodation of the 3D nanostructure of the porous electrode.

Abstract:We demonstrate the synthesis of three-dimensional Cu-Ge core-shell nanowire array electrodes by directly depositing Ge on the surface of pre-synthesized Cu nanowire arrays via an rf-sputtering method. When used as anodes of lithium-ion batteries, the Cu-Ge nanowire arrays display a high capacity of 1419 mAh g(-1) at 0.5 C after 40 cycles and 734 mAh g(-1) at 60 C after 80 cycles, which is better than planar electrodes. The improved performance can be attributed to the good electrical contact, fast electron transport and good strain accommodation of the nanowire array electrodes. The effect of the thickness of Ge layer on the electrochemical performance of the three-dimensional electrodes has also been investigated.

Abstract:Germanium (Ge) has a high specific capacity when used as an alloying anode in lithium ion batteries. Despite this, the large volume of expansion that occurs during charging and discharging has hampered its practical application. In order to improve the stability of the alloying anode, a three-dimensional (3D) Germanium/carbon porous composite was produced. In situ X-ray diffraction and electrochemical dilatometers are used to study the alloying electrode's structure evolution during cycling, revealing that the carbon matrix and linked porosity structure provide a high reversible of lithiation and delithiation, resulting in limited electrode volume expansion and high stability. Moveover, combined with a high nickel content cathode, i.e., LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2, achieved a specific energy density of 396 Wh kg-1 and a stable cycling performance, which shows the potential application in lithium-ion full cell.

Abstract:Germanium (Ge), an alloy-type anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), possesses many advantages such as high theoretical capacity and decent electrical conductivity. Nevertheless, its application is restricted by tremendous volume variation and tardy reaction kinetic during discharge/charge process. In this paper, the Ge/3DPG composites with Ge nanoparticles uniformly dispersed in 3D interconnected porous graphene (3DPG) skeleton are successfully prepared using a template-assisted in-situ reduction method. The unique 3D interconnected porous graphene can not only enhance the electronic conductivity and reaction kinetics of the materials, but also provide sufficient buffer space to effectively mitigate the volume expansion during cycling and strengthen the structural integrity. Moreover, the small-sized Ge nanoparticles in close conjunction with the 3D graphene can boost the surface-controlled reaction of the electrode, which contributes to a fast charge–discharge rate capability. The Ge/3DPG composite with optimized Ge/graphene mass ratio delivers high reversible specific capacity (1102 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at 0.2 C), outstanding rate capability (494 mAh g−1 at 5 C), and admirable cycling stability (85.3% of capacity retention after 250 cycles at 0.5 C). This work provides a significant inspiration for the design and fabrication of advanced Ge-based anode materials for next-generation high-performance LIBs.

Abstract:Germanium-based material has attracted numerous attentions and been regarded as a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity. However, drastic pulverization and rapid capacity fading caused by large volume variation during cycling limit its practical application. In this work, three-dimensional N-doped carbon framework-wrapped Na4Ge9O20 nanoparticles (3D Na4Ge9O20@N-C) have been synthesized via freeze-drying approach with NaCl as both template and sodium source for ion-exchanging. The employment of NaCl has two special roles: on the one hand, the NaCl crystals act as template and facilitate the formation of 3D porous structure, while on the other hand, the NaCl crystals serving as sodium source and support the ion exchange between NaCl and GeO2 promote the formation of Na4Ge9O20. Benefiting from the unique method, the prepared 3D Na4Ge9O20@N-C not only suppresses the volume change by using carbon as buffer layers but also demonstrates an improved electronic conductivity and a shortened ionic diffusion. When utilized as an anode material for LIBs, the 3D Na4Ge9O20@N-C composites deliver high reversible capacity (896.2 mAh·g−1 at 0.1 A·g−1 after 100 cycles), good cycling stability (520.8 mAh·g−1 at 2.0 A·g−1after 400 cycles) and excellent rate performance (636.0 mAh·g−1 at 2.0 A·g−1). This work provides a strategy to improve the electrochemical performance of germanium-based anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Germanium-based materials are gaining increasing attention as promising anodes for Li-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their high specific capacity, good cycling stability and excellent rate performance. Similarly to Si, Ge-based anodes undergo a huge volume expansion and contraction during Li intercalation and deintercalation, causing a rapid and irreversible capacity decay. In this work, Ge nanoparticles are uniformly attached to a 3D ordered macroporous (3DOM) Ni framework (Ge/3DOM-Ni) via a facile drop-coating technique in order to address the volume expansion and stability issues plaguing Ge anodes. The 3D ordered macroporous Ni frameworks with high porosity act not only as highly conductive current collectors but also as a robust porous support for the formation of a thin layer of Ge nanoparticles. The three-dimensional porous network facilitates the penetration of the electrolyte and lithium ions. The possible alloy interface generated among the Ge nanoparticles and Ni framework during the calcination process ensures good electric contact among the nanoparticles and the 3D ordered macroporous Ni framework. When used as self-supporting binder-free anodes for lithium ion batteries, the Ge/3DOM-Ni electrode shows high rate performance and excellent structural and cycling stability. This work provides a facile and effective strategy for improving the electrochemical performance of Ge-based anodes.
Controllable preparation of carbon coating Ge nanospheres with a cubic hollow structure for high-performance lithium ion batteries

Abstract:Germanium based nanomaterials are very promising as the anodes for the lithium ion batteries since their large specific capacity, excellent lithium diffusivity and high conductivity. However, their controllable preparation is still very difficult to achieve. Herein, we facilely prepare a unique carbon coating Ge nanospheres with a cubic hollow structure (Ge@C) via a hydrothermal synthesis and subsequent pyrolysis using low-cost GeO2 as precursors. The hollow Ge@C nanostructure not only provides abundant interior space to alleviate the huge volumetric expansion of Ge upon lithiation, but also facilitates the transmission of lithium ions and electrons. Moreover, experiment analyses and density functional theory (DFT) calculations unveil the excellent lithium adsorption ability, high exchange current density, low activation energy for lithium diffusion of the hollow Ge@C electrode, thus exhibiting significant lithium storage advantages with a large charge capacity (1483 mAh/g under 200 mA g-1), distinguished rate ability (710 mAh/g under 8000 mA g-1) as well as long-term cycling stability (1130 mAh/g after 900 cycles under 1000 mA g-1). Therefore, this work offers new paths for controllable synthesis and fabrication of high-performance Ge based lithium storage nanomaterials.

Abstract:We demonstrate the synthesis of SiGe porous nanorod arrays by using ZnO nanorod arrays as a sacrificial template. A seed-assisted method was employed to synthesize ZnO nanorod arrays which were coated by SiGe layer via a co-sputtering method. After the removal of ZnO nanorod, SiGe porous nanorod arrays were achieved. When used as an anode material of lithium-ion batteries, SiGe porous nanorod arrays showed enhanced performance compared to corresponding planar electrode and bare Si porous nanorod arrays. The good contact and adhesion of the porous nanorod arrays with the current collector, and the integration of Ge that can greatly improve the conductivity and lithium-ion diffusivity in SiGe layer, may be responsible for the enhanced performance. Abstract:In a simple and convenient way, mesoporous germanium nanoparticles (mp-Ge NPs) are prepared by a "metathesis" reaction of magnesium germanide (Mg2Ge) and zinc chloride (ZnCl2) in an autoclave at 300 degrees C. Investigated as anode materials for lithiumion batteries, the prepared mp-Ge NPs exhibit a high capacity retention of 1048 mA h g(-1) at 1 C after 1000 cycles and a high rate capacity of 727.1 mA h g(-1)- at 10 C in Li-Ge half cells. Additionally, a 3.4 V lithium-ion full cell (Ge-LiCoO2) with an energy retention of 85% (268.8 W h kg(-1)) over 100 cycles is achieved.

Abstract:We demonstrate the synthesis of new Cu-Si 1-xGe x core-shell nanowire array electrodes by directly depositing Si 1-xGe x layer on the surface of pre-synthesized Cu nanowire arrays via co-sputtering method. Abstract:Germanium (Ge) is demonstrated to be prospective as a lithium‐ion battery anode material, yet the cycling stability is undermined by substantial volume fluctuations, restricting its viability for practical applications. Here, we present a facile Zn‐based metal−organic framework (MOF) engaged route to produce Ge nanoparticles in situ encapsulated in nitrogen‐doped mesoporous carbon (denoted as Ge@N‐C) as an anode material. This method uses a zinc‐triazolate MOF (MET‐6) and commercial GeO2 as the hybrid carbon and Ge precursors. After a heating treatment, the Ge@N‐C composite is readily obtained along with the simultaneous thermal decomposition of MET‐6 and the reduction of GeO2. Benefiting from the mesoporous structure and high electrical conductivity of N‐C, along with the strong interaction between Ge and N‐C, the obtained Ge@N‐C electrode exhibits a significant reversible charge capacity of 1012.8 mAh g‐1 after 150 cycles at 0.1 A g‐1, and excellent rate capability. Furthermore, a reversible charge capacity of 521.1 mAh g‐1 can be maintained at 5.0 A g‐1 after 1000 cycles.

Abstract:Abstract Recently, metal phosphides have been investigated as potential anode materials because of higher specific capacity compared with those of carbonaceous materials. However, the rapid capacity fade upon cycling leads to poor durability and short cycle life, which cannot meet the need of lithium-ion batteries with high energy density. Herein, we report a layer-structured GeP 3 /C nanocomposite anode material with high performance prepared by a facial and large-scale ball milling method via in-situ mechanical reaction. The P-O-C bonds are formed in the composite, leading to close contact between GeP 3 and carbon. As a result, the GeP 3 /C anode displays excellent lithium storage performance with a high reversible capacity up to 1109 mA h g −1 after 130 cycles at a current density of 0.1 A g −1 . Even at high current densities of 2 and 5 A g −1 , the reversible capacities are still as high as 590 and 425 mA h g −1 , respectively. This suggests that the GeP 3 /C composite is promising to achieve high-energy lithium-ion batteries and the mechanical milling is an efficient method to fabricate such composite electrode materials especially for large-scale application.

Abstract:In this work, the preparation of novel macroporous germanium (p-Ge) and its electrochemical characterization as anode material for lithium-ion batteries is presented. Three-dimensional (3D) macroporous germanium particles with a hexagonal-like morphology were successfully prepared using a magnesiothennic reduction method, in which GeO2 serves not only as the template, but also as the germanium source. The obtained material demonstrates uniform pores within the particles, which serve as buffer zone to effectively accommodate the big volume changes of germanium during electrochemical lithiation and gives rise to an improved electrochemical performance. The p-Ge anode delivers not only a high reversible capacity of 1131 rnAh g(-1) at a rate of 1 C after 200 cycles, but also a high rate capability with a capacity of 717 mAh g(-1) at 5 C. The capacity retention for charge/discharge cycling of more than 96% after 200 cycles is also remarkably improved, compared to nonporous Ge materials.

Abstract:As anode materials for high-performance Li-ion batteries, peapod-like Ge-based composites, including Ge, a Li-inactive conducting Cu3Ge, and a porous carbon matrix are synthesized simply by annealing CuGeO3@dopamine in a H-2/Ar atmosphere. The introduction of the carbon layer and inactive alloying phase Cu3Ge not only enhances the electrical conductivity of the Ge anode, but also reduces the volume change of Ge during the cell cycle as a buffer. In particular, the anode of this peapod-like Cu3Ge/Ge@C shows an excellent long cycle life as well as outstanding capacity performance, with a discharge specific capacity up to 934 mA h g(-1) after 500 cycles.
