Abstract:The fatigue of cellular materials is analyzed using dimensional arguments. When the first unbroken cell wall ahead of the macrocrack tip fails after some cycles of loading, the macrocrack advances one cell diameter, giving the macrocrack growth rate of cellular materials. Paris law for microcrack propagation, Basquin law for high cycle fatigue and Coffin-Manson law for low cycle fatigue are employed in calculating the number of cycles to failure of the first unbroken cell wall ahead of the macrocrack tip. It is found that fatigue of cellular materials depends on cyclic stress intensity range, cell size, relative density and the fatigue parameters of the solid from which they are made. Theoretical modelling of fatigue of foams is compared to data in polymer foams; agreement is good.

Abstract:Fatigue crack growth in asphalt pavements under vehicle load may primarily occur within the asphalt fine aggregate matrix (FAM) phase of the mixture. This study aims to predict fatigue crack growth in FAM by developing a mechanistic-based fatigue crack characterization model and fatigue crack growth model under torsional shear cyclic load. Initially, a fatigue crack characterization indicator, fatigue damage density, was derived using principles of torque and dissipated strain energy equivalence. Afterwards, a fatigue crack growth model was established based on the pseudo J-integral Paris’ law. Finally, the viscoelastic damage constitutive model was further constructed by coupling the fatigue crack growth model with a viscoelastic model, which was subsequently implemented in COMSOL Multiphysics. The results show that the fatigue damage density can be determined by the initial shear modulus and phase angle, as well as shear modulus and phase angle under fatigue conditions. Additionally, a logarithmic-linear correlation exists between the fatigue crack growth rate and the dissipated pseudo strain energy rate. The parameters of the fatigue crack growth model exhibit minimal variation across different shear strain levels and temperatures. Overall, the proposed numerical model can effectively simulate damaged torsional shear cyclic tests of FAM.
A New Approach for Studying Fatigue Damage

Abstract:Among the post fatigue tensile properties such as modulus of elasticity, 0.2% offset yield strength, reduction of cross area, elongation, strain hardening exponent, ultimate tensile strength and toughness, the post fatigue toughness is selected as the fatigue damage variable for structural steel after different cyclic loadings.On the basis of degradation of toughness and dissipation of plastic strain energy during fatigue failure, a new approach for quantifying fatigue damage, including damage variable, damage critical, damage evolution equation and cumulative damage ruler is suggested and confirmed by experiment results. It is shown that the damage variable defined by degradation of the toughness is better than those by variation of ductility, strength and elastic modulus, and the proposed cumulative damage model is better than those based on Miner′s liner rule and Manson′s double liner rule.The approach proposed can be used as a new method for the design against fatigue and the estimation of fatigue life of engineering structures and components.

Abstract:The objective of this work is to experimentally investigate the damage evolution and damage mechanism in closed-cell aluminum alloy foam under tension-tension fatigue loading. Constant amplitude fatigue tests are performed for the aluminum alloy foam, and experimental results indicate the large scatter of the fatigue damage in the aluminum alloy foam. To describe the fatigue damage with large scatter, a statistical fatigue damage model is developed on the basis of continuum damage mechanics. It is seen that the statistical damage model can describe the fatigue damage of the foam. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation on the fracture surface of the tested specimen is carried out to understand the damage mechanisms of the foam. Four major categories of fatigue damage mechanism are concluded, i.e. damage initiates from the material surface, damage initiates on the cell wall, damage initiates at the intersection of several cell walls and damage initiates from the edge of cell. The high-resolution SEM images reveal that the fatigue mechanisms of the foam are mainly governed by the cell structure. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Fatigue crack propagation in a closed-cell aluminum alloy foam is experimentally investigated in this work. A series of fatigue tests are conducted to obtain the a-N curves (i.e. crack length vs loading cycle number) and da/dN-∆K curves (fatigue crack propagation rate vs stress intensity). Statistical analysis is carried out to assess the stochastic and scattering characteristics in the fatigue crack propagation of the foam, based on which a statistical fatigue crack propagation model is developed. Furthermore, the fracture surfaces of the foam specimens are characterized, as well as the fatigue fracture morphologies. It is demonstrated that the structural heterogeneity inherent in the material and the difference in the cell structures between different specimens account for the great scatter of the fatigue crack propagation in the close-cell aluminum alloy foam.

Abstract:A numerical framework for simulating progressive failure under high-cycle fatigue loading is validated against experiments of composite quasi-isotropic open-hole laminates. Transverse matrix cracking and delamination are modeled with a mixed-mode fatigue cohesive zone model, covering crack initiation and propagation. Furthermore, XFEM is used for simulating transverse matrix cracks and splits at arbitrary locations. An adaptive cycle jump approach is employed for efficiently simulating high-cycle fatigue while accounting for local stress ratio variations in the presence of thermal residual stresses. The cycle jump scheme is integrated in the XFEM framework, where the local stress ratio is used to determine the insertion of cracks and to propagate fatigue damage. The fatigue cohesive zone model is based on S-N curves and requires static material properties and only a few fatigue parameters, calibrated on simple fracture testing specimens. The simulations demonstrate a good correspondence with experiments in terms of fatigue life and damage evolution.

Abstract:Fatigue crack propagation was modeled by using the cyclic plasticity material properties and fatigue constants for crack initiation. The cyclic elastic-plastic stress-strain field near the crack tip was analyzed using the finite element method with the implementation of a robust cyclic plasticity theory. An incremental multiaxial fatigue criterion was employed to determine the fatigue damage. A straightforward method was developed to determine the fatigue crack growth rate. Crack propagation behavior of a material was obtained without any additional assumptions or fitting. Benchmark Mode I fatigue crack growth experiments were conducted using 1070 steel at room temperature. The approach developed was able to quantitatively capture all the important fatigue crack propagation behaviors including the overload and the R-ratio effects on crack propagation and threshold. The models provide a new perspective for the R-ratio effects. The results support the notion that the fatigue crack initiation and propagation behaviors are governed by the same fatigue damage mechanisms. Crack growth can be treated as a process of continuous crack nucleation.

Abstract:We study the fatigue fracture of disordered materials by means of computer simulations of a discrete element model. We extend a two-dimensional fracture model to capture the microscopic mechanisms relevant for fatigue and we simulate the diametric compression of a disc shape specimen under a constant external force. The model allows us to follow the development of the fracture process on the macrolevel and microlevel varying the relative influence of the mechanisms of damage accumulation over the load history and healing of microcracks. As a specific example we consider recent experimental results on the fatigue fracture of asphalt. Our numerical simulations show that for intermediate applied loads the lifetime of the specimen presents a power law behavior. Under the effect of healing, more prominent for small loads compared to the tensile strength of the material, the lifetime of the sample increases and a fatigue limit emerges below which no macroscopic failure occurs. The numerical results are in a good qualitative agreement with the experimental findings.

Abstract:Fatigue resistance is a key performance for the life-cycle sustainability of materials and structures. Structural members subjected to flexural forces such as spring hinges in origami structures are one of the most commonly existing in nature and engineering practice but predicting their fatigue resistance is a challenge because of complex mechanisms of crack localization, nonstationary amplitudes in the time domain, and the influence of stress gradient due to bending moment. We developed a general lumped damage simulation model for predicting the fatigue life and the associated crack propagation in the full range of elastic and plastic amplitudes. It is found that the developed comprehensive damage model demonstrates a new perspective for fatigue-induced remaining life quantification for engineering structures. (c) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:The present study is concerned with the development and implementation of a continuum damage mechanics model describing the degradation and failure of short fiber reinforced composites subjected to static and fatigue loads. Towards a numerically efficient formulation, the model is defined entirely on the macroscopic scale, although being motivated by microstructural considerations. Based on experimental observations, an anisotropic linear elastic formulation is adopted as a base formulation. The elastic model is coupled with a damage formulation assuming that damage is driven by the approach of a state point in strain space to a Tsai-Hill type failure envelope. The model is implemented as a user defined subroutine into a finite element formulation. As a numerically highly efficient alternative, an enhanced Wöhler-Miner type post-processing procedure is proposed. Both numerical approaches are found in good agreement with experimental data obtained in coupon experiments as well as in experiments on specimens with more complex geometry and loading conditions.

Abstract:Ultrahigh toughness cementitious composites are a kind of high-performance cementitious material with a characteristic of ductile fracture. Based on the continuum damage mechanics theory and flexural fatigue damage model, two damage propagation models of ultrahigh toughness cementitious composites are built. One is a linear bilogarithmic model with J-integral range as its independent variable, while the other one is a linear model on a semilogarithmic scale with fatigue stress level as its independent variable. However, according to former research, the J-integral depends strongly on specimens’ geometry, so the first damage propagation model is deeply influenced by material dimension. As a result, the second damage propagation model is more convenient in application, shows the material fatigue property in comparison with the first model. In order to prove these two models and obtain the parameters, a three-point flexural fatigue experiment on single-edge-notched fracture specimens is carried out. The results shows that the two models fit better with the experimental results, rather than the crack propagation law of ultrahigh toughness cementitious composites.

Abstract:Based on the modified strip-yield model proposed by Wang et al(1), a fatigue crack closure analytical model is presented to simulate plane stress, plane strain and general three dimensional problems for CCT specimen when considering the thickness effect and the material hardeing. A plastic constraint factor alpha, stress sigma (yy) ahead of the crack tip, crack closure coefficients U and crack opening stress ratios C-f when considering thickness and hardening effects are discussed. The crack growth rate under constant amplitude loading and a concept of thickness sensitive zone are also proposed for convenience in engineering application.
A Microscopic Mechanism Model and Quantitive Description of Fatigue Crack Growth

Abstract:In the present paper, a new microscopic mechanism model of fatigue crack growth is presented based on the dislocation-free zone (DFZ) theory. A cohesive zone model is developed to determine the stress field of the DFZ under cyclic loading. The process of fatigue crack growth is viewed as the intermittent quasi-cleavage fracture of the DFZ. A simple relation is derived to evaluate the fatigue crack growth rate. The calculated dc/dN curves exhibit three different regimes of fatigue crack growth, which is in agreement with the general propagation pattern of fatigue crack. The model gives a reasonable explanation for both the crack growth and striation formation.

Abstract:Tension–tension fatigue tests are carried out to investigate the fatigue of closed-cell aluminum alloy foam. The stress–life (S–N) curve of the foam is obtained, in which large scatter is observed and discussed in detail. To understand the scatter of fatigue life of the foam, fracture surface is examined. The fatigue life decreases as the number and the size of large cells increase. The irregularity of inner cell structure of the foam attributes to the scatter of fatigue life. Then, a statistical stress–life model is developed, and a series of statistical probability–stress–life (P–S–N) curves are obtained. The P–S–N curve is efficient in describing the fatigue of foam materials.

Abstract:Fatigue failure in biological soft tissues plays a critical role in the etiology of chronic soft tissue injuries and diseases such as osteoarthritis. Understanding failure mechanisms is hindered by the decades-long timescales over which damage takes place. Analyzing the factors contributing to fatigue failure requires the help of validated computational models developed for soft tissues. This study presents a framework for fatigue failure of fibrous biological tissues based on reaction kinetics, where the composition of intact and fatigued material regions can evolve via degradation and breakage over time, in response to energy-based fatigue and damage criteria. Using reactive constrained mixture theory, material region mass fractions are governed by the axiom of mass balance. Progression of fatigue is controlled by an energy-based reaction rate, with user-selected probability functions defining the damage propensity of intact and fatigued material regions. Verification of this reactive theory, which is implemented in the open source FEBio finite element software, is provided in this study. Validation is also demonstrated against experimental data, showing that predicted damage can be linked to results from biochemical assays. The framework is also applied to study fatigue failure during frictional contact of cartilage. Simulating previous experiments suggests that frictional effects slightly increase fatigue progression, but the main driver is cyclic compressive contact loading. This study demonstrated the ability of theoretical models to complement and extend experimental findings, advancing our understanding of the time progression of fatigue in biological tissues.

Abstract:A fatigue behavioral simulation for steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) subjected to high cycle repetition of loads is presented. The fatigue constitutive models for normal strength concrete developed in the past decades are extended to those for SFRC with regard to tension, compression and shear transfer along dispersed cracking. The hysteretic path-dependency of SFRC is extensively focused on as well as post-cracking tension softening, because it greatly affects the stress-strain amplitudes of SFRC inside structures. The interaction of multi-directional cracks is taken into account based upon the fixed crack approach for enabling the damage evolution under the principal stress rotation. The rate effect on the stress and strain relation is also formulated to take into account the nonlinearity related to both loading rates and numbers of cycles. These proposed models for SFRC are experimentally verified in view of S-N diagrams of flexural tension for practical use.

Abstract:The effect of the large cells on the fatigue properties of closed-cell aluminum alloy foam is studied experimentally and numerically. To do this, a parameter termed as characteristic diameter (Dch) is introduced. 44 dog-bone type specimens are tested with MTS fatigue test machine. In addition, the fatigue performances are numerically simulated by using foam models generated with a program given in this paper. In both cases, large scatter in fatigue life is observed. After classifying the foams into different groups based on their Dch, the fatigue life results of foams within the same Dch range show smaller diversity. It indicates that Dch is an effective parameter which can be used to classify the fatigue performance of foam materials. For foams with same relative density, foams with higher Dch are inclined to have shorter fatigue lives, even though the cell size distributions of foams are different. It is concluded that the fatigue life of foam is dominated by the large cells rather than the cell size distribution. By observing the fatigue life contour obtained from numerical simulation, the dangerous regions in the cell structure are found near the cell walls of larger cells and on the outer surfaces of foam.

Abstract:A damage model for transverse matrix cracks in composite laminates under fatigue loading was presented in this paper. The model was prosed based on the theory of continuum damage mechanics (CDM) at macro level and could capture the 'edge effect' of matrix cracks in composite laminate under fatigue loading. To obtain the constitutive equation of UD lamina containing transverse matrix cracks, a polynomial Gibbs free energy function was derived, and a macro damage parameter was introduced to characterize the influence of matrix cracks on multidirectional stiffness properties of UD composite. To predict the initiation and evolution of matrix cracks, a previously deduced initial crack initiation life function and a Paris-like equation in terms of damage driving force were employed, respectively. Prediction results of two cross-ply laminates under fatigue loading with different stress levels were compared to the experimental results and prediction results obtained from previously proposed model. The comparison results indicate the presented model is more effective and reliable in predicting the initiation and evolution of matrix cracks and the corresponding stiffness degradation in composite laminates under fatigue loading.

Abstract:Investigating fatigue failure in titanium alloys is crucial for material design and engineering. Fatigue behavior in dual‐phase titanium alloys is strongly correlated with microstructural features and microdefects. This work formulates an improved modeling method to investigate fatigue behavior of bimodal Ti–6Al–4V, emphasizing the effects of lamellar orientation and microdefects. Using an improved Voronoi tessellation method, we establish representative volume element (RVE) models with various grain size distributions. Crystal plasticity finite element modeling (CPFEM) is used to analyze fatigue deformation in bimodal Ti–6Al–4V, considering microdefects and lamellar orientation. Fatigue indicator parameters are then incorporated into CPFEM to predict fatigue life and verified with experimental data. Numerical results highlight the significant influence of lamellar orientation and microdefects on fatigue behavior, with predicted life within the 3‐error band. This method efficiently overcomes challenges in quantitatively characterizing microstructural lamellae that experiments are short of, paving the way for designing fatigue‐resistant alloy materials with similar microstructures.

Abstract:Cohesive zone models (CZM) have been proposed to deal with material failure which provides an alternative way to describe crack propagation. More recently by considering accumulative damage in the cohesive zone under cyclic loading, the cyclic cohesive zone models (CCZM) have been introduced and seem to be promising for analysis of crack initiation and propagation [2]. Recently several methods for modeling the displacement discontinuity, referred to as extended finite element methods (XFEM), have been developed based on the approach of partition of unity. Using XFEM, one can simulate the crack initiation at an arbitrary material point and crack propagation in arbitrary direction without modifying FE mesh. Combining with XFEM, the CZM can be naturally incorporated to simulate mixed-mode crack propagation and has found wide applications in computational material mechanics. In the present study, we are using a modified boundary layer model to investigate correlation between external loading mixity and crack propagation on the basis of the XFEM. The feasibility is validated by known experiments.
