Abstract:In this paper, a novel orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based indoor visible light communication (VLC) system was proposed that can provide a high reliability transmission performance while maintaining ambient light stability by using multicolor LEDs. This solution combines Spatial Modulation (SM) and Metameric Modulation (MM) with OFDM-VLC communication system. Along with all of the promising advantages of OFDM, SM and MM, the proposed system will be applicable for high-speed indoor white communication. Through the simulation results, it is known that the proposed indoor visible light transmission system has significant advantages over DC-biased Optical OFDM (DCO-OFDM) and Asymmetrically Clipped Optical OFDM(ACO-OFDM). Moreover, it is robust to the nonlinear distortion caused by a large peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of OFDM signal in comparision with other NDC-OFDM VLC transmission systems, and hardly generate intensity fluctuation.
On visible light communication using LED array with DFT-Spread OFDM

Abstract:DFT-Spread OFDM has been well studied in radio frequency (RF) systems thanks to its effectiveness in reducing the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). However, due to the inherent positive real signal constraint in visible light communications (VLC), the implementation of DFT-Spread OFDM in VLC faces some different challenges with respect to its high PAPR. This paper presents an LED array assisted visible light communication system using DFT-Spread OFDM. With this technique, theoretical analysis are firstly derived to help characterize the system PAPR reduction in VLC systems. Specifically, two different subcarrier allocation modes namely localized DFT-Spread and interleaved DFT-Spread OFDM are explicitly studied with their time domain signal expressions. Moreover, based on the results, detailed comparisons of DFT-Spread OFDM in terms of PAPR reduction are made for VLC and RF systems. Simulation results show that the proposed system not only leads to a reduced PAPR, but also achieves a performance gain in BER without any loss of system transmission rate.

Abstract:In visible light communication (VLC) system, the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) technique has been widely used to achieve a high data rate transmission. However, OFDM will cause high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) in the VLC system. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a new interleaved Discrete Fourier Transform Spread Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (DFT-S OFDM) method. We compare the interleaved DFT-S technique to other PAPR reduction techniques, such as Clipping OFDM and conventional DFT-S. The experimental results show that interleaved DFT-S achieve FEC threshold for an overall 2.0Gb/s 32QAM signal over the 1.05m transmission. In addition, interleaved DFT-S presents significant PAPR reduction, low complexity and optimal BER performance, when compared to other techniques.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) using high power light emitting diodes (LEDs) for high speed communication becomes a new area which draws increasing attention. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a high-speed VLC system based on Discrete Fourier Transform Spread Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (DFT-S OFDM) for the first time. We change the value of different factors and compare the performance of the system in order to find the effect of different factors. The experimental results show that the bit error rate (BER) for an overall 1.2Gb/s 64QAM and 32QAM signal over 40 cm transmission can be under the 7% forward error correction (FEC) limit of 3.8×10 -3 . Meanwhile, we clearly demonstrate the benefit and feasibility of DFT-S OFDM modulation format for the high speed VLC system.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a novel quasi-balanced detection (QBD) technique in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) visible light communication (VLC) system. By employing opposite signals to odd and even consecutive symbols, the nonlinearity distortion, and direct current can be eliminated efficiently. Additionally, the sensitivity of receiver can also be improved by 3dB, thus a longer transmission distance and high-order modulation formats can be received. We achieved physical data rate of 2.1-Gb/s enabled by wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM), pre- and post-equalization, and the resulting bit error ratios (BERs) were below the FEC limit of 3.8x10(-3). The distance was above 2.5 meters that was long enough for indoor communication. Compared with conventional direct-detection optical (DDO-OFDM) and asymmetrically-clipped optical (ACO-OFDM), the BER can be enhanced by 22.2dB and 20.8dB, respectively, which shows great potential in short range and low cost access network.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) systems make use of the available LED lamps to realize a high spatial density of high-speed optical links superposed to their natural illumination function. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been adopted for these intensity modulation/direct-detection optical channels. However, it suffers from low power efficiency or low spectral efficiency. In this paper, we aim to improve the performance of OFDM-based indoor VLC systems. By utilizing the principle of spatial summing, we propose an anti-periodic asymmetrically clipped OFDM scheme to make efficient use of both power and spectrum. In this scheme, the OFDM subcarriers are partitioned into multiple specific groups to form independent unipolar signals. These signals are simultaneously transmitted from different LEDs that are within the same light fixture and are summed in space before being detected by a conventional OFDM receiver. The computer simulation results show that the proposed approach can achieve lower PAPR and more robustness to the clipping distortion caused by the nonlinearities of LED leading to better bit error rate performance for the same spectral efficiency than that of the conventional DCO-OFDM and ACO-OFDM schemes do under both LOS and DOW channels.

Abstract:This paper proposes an indoor multiuser visible light communication (VLC) system using multiple lamps with orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) techniques. For the users located in different places, the diversities of their channels help to optimally allocate the subcarriers to the users for high-speed transmissions. Considering the peak radiation power limited light sources, the modulation index on each subcarrier is jointly optimized with the subcarriers assignment scheme. This paper proposes a genetic algorithm and a two-stage searching method to solve this joint optimization problem. Considering the computational complexity, a distributed optimization scheme together with the resource block methods are applied. From simulation results, the distributed optimization method significantly reduces the computational complexity and only sacrifices about a 30% data rate. This paper takes the illumination requirements into account. By changing the additive DC bias, the average optical power is adjusted; then, the throughput performances over different illumination levels are discussed. Due to the channel feedback error, the channel uncertainty is modeled and considered in this paper. Based on the simulation results, knowing the channel uncertainty can provide around 6 times higher bit rate than not knowing the uncertainty when the normalized variance of channel uncertainty is -3 dB.

Abstract:Multipath interference induced power fading occurs when the transmission path lengths from the light emitting diodes to a single receiver are different in a visible light communication system. To solve this problem, we apply a QR-decomposition-based channel equalizer(QR-CE) to achieve successive interference cancellation for a discrete Fourier transform spreading(DFT-S) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) signal.We experimentally demonstrate a 200 Mb/s DFT-S OFDM over a 2 m free-space transmission. The experimental results show that a DFT-S OFDM with QR-CE attains much better bit error rate performance than a DFT-S OFDM with conventional CEs. The impacts of several parameters on a QR-CE are also investigated.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) technology is widely used in visible light communication (VLC) to achieve high data rate transmission. However, the traditional direct-current (DC)-biased optical OFDM (DCO-OFDM) VLC systems suffer from the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) which causes signal clipping distortion, and, thus, performance degradation. Furthermore, severe high-frequency fading due to the limited system bandwidth results in poor bit error rate (BER) performance. Precoding matrix (PM) techniques have been proposed to enhance the performance of VLC OFDM transmission, but a little or no work has been carried out in investigating the theory of PM used in OFDM VLC systems. In this paper, we aim to reveal the theory of PM-DCO-OFDM for a VLC system. To figure out the intrinsic laws of a PM method, we investigate the principles of PAPR reduction, clipping distortion optimization, and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) distribution equalization. Based on the analysis of PAPR, we theoretically proved the simplicity of PM as a method to reduce the possibility of high PAPR by improving the autocorrelation performance of input symbols. The clipping distortion could be improved due to the reduction of high PAPR. Moreover, the relatively uniform SNR distribution can be achieved by PM through equalizing the clipping and channel noise, which is beneficial to improve the BER performance in high-frequency constrained systems. However, the PM method used in a DCO-OFDM VLC system should consider the transmitting power, modulation format, and transmission distance as a whole to achieve the transmission performance improvement. The simulation results demonstrate the complementary cumulative distribution function of PAPR can be reduced ∼3 dB, while the performance of clipping distortion power and clipping error probability are significantly improved. Furthermore, experiment is carried out with results showing that the PM method can improve the BER performance in the case that VLC OFDM transmission has enough transmitting power, but with the low transmitting power, the PM also can damage the BER performance. The simulation and experiment results are consistent with our theoretical analysis.

Abstract:Visible light communication is a hot topic of wireless communication area which has drawn more attention to be researched. Dft-s ofdm is a main modulation method used in long term evolution (lte) in wireless communication, which is able to reduce the nonlinear limitation in client amplifier. Modulating directly by transmitter led in vlc will cause a strong linear effect which is harmful. As a result, this paper is aimed to do a research to study the anti-linear ability of dft-s ofdm. The study shows that dft-s ofdm is helpful in reducing linear effect and papr. It also shows the simulation and experiment results to make sure the system can work safely and precisely in a certain situation. We make a conclusion that less number of subcarriers can help to lower papr and bit error ratio (ber).

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a practical visible light communication (VLC) system of 3.2-m transmission using spectrally efficient discrete multitone (DMT) or carrierless amplitude phase (CAP) modulation. The transmitters consist of two light emitting diodes (LEDs) spaced 2 m apart, the arrangement of which corresponds to a common case for full-range illumination in indoor environments, and this work also investigates the influence of the difference in transmission path lengths from the LEDs to a single receiver. In the overlapped illumination area, the delay interference between the LEDs could result in up to about 40% capacity reduction using quaternary CAP or bit-loaded DMT signals, when two LEDs simply transmit the same signal. To mitigate the impact of the delay interference, Alamouti space-time block coding (STBC) is employed for both DMT and CAP signals, and the combination of CAP and STBC is proposed for the first time to the authors' best knowledge. Employing STBC, we successfully demonstrate interference-tolerant VLC over 3.2-m air transmission, and the maximum data rates for DMT and CAP signals are 220 and 150 Mbps, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with differential index modulation (OFDM-DIM) is proposed for visible light communication. Compared with traditional OFDM with index modulation (OFDM-IM), the proposed scheme decreases the average number of used subcarriers when transmits the same amount of information bits, therefore higher spectral efficiency can be achieved. The simulation results present that OFDM-DIM can provide higher data transmission rate and lower bit error rate (BER) over additive white gaussian noise (AWGN) optical channel. Meanwhile, simulations over reference channels of short range optical wireless communication are implemented, where OFDM-DIM performances better than OFDM-IM when line-of-sight (LOS) components are dominant.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has been widely studied and adopted in visible-light communication (VLC) systems because of its high spectral efficiency and low-complexity implementation. However, OFDM-based VLC systems suffer from a high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), along with the nonlinear transfer characteristics of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). In this paper, a subcarrier grouping scheme for an OFDM-based VLC system is proposed. This scheme exploits the property that one LED lamp usually contains multiple independent LED chips. In the proposed scheme, all OFDM signal subcarriers are divided into groups, and each group is transmitted by an individual LED chip while the same receiver structure is maintained. The PAPR is reduced significantly because only some of the subcarriers are located on each LED chip. Hence, the achievable input power can be increased, leading to a higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and a lower bit error rate (BER). Simulated and experimental results demonstrate that the BER performance can be improved by over two orders of magnitude. Moreover, an adaptive switching mechanism is also proposed in this paper, in which a subcarrier grouping scheme is employed adaptively when the required input power is high. Simulation results validate that the proposed mechanism can enhance system robustness significantly.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) has received more and more attention in recent years. In this paper, we propose a novel configuration of unidirectional subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) -wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) -VLC system adopting quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. Based on this configuration, we successfully demonstrate a 3x1 multiple-input single-output (MISO) OFDM-VLC transmission experiment using three blue phosphor LEDs. The transmission distance can be as long as 140cm. We also demonstrate an 800-Mb/s MISO SCM-WDM VLC transmission experiment based on RGB-LED with 66-cm transmission distance. In the two experiments, pre-equalization and post-equalization both are implemented to compensate for the poor frequency response of LEDs. And the properties of EVM and BER in all channels are measured and analysed.
