Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing/offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OFDM/OQAM) has the advantage of high spectral efficiency due to non-requirement of cyclic prefix (CP) and guard band. However, the high direct current (DC) used in OFDM/OQAM is power inefficient for visible light communication (VLC). In this letter, an enhanced OFDM/OQAM (EO-OFDM/OQAM) scheme is proposed for VLC, which is inspired by the idea of the pulse-amplitude-modulation based hybrid optical OFDM (PHO-OFDM) scheme. In this system, the half of subcarriers of the normal branch carry useful data while the remaining subcarriers are selected to carry negative clipping noise instead of useful data for improving the power efficiency, and a flexible power allocation method is introduced. The simulation results show that compared with the PHO-OFDM, the proposed scheme has a better bit error rate (BER) performance under the same average bit rate without additional operations of interference regeneration and cancellation.

Abstract:Abstract Visible light communications (VLC) has received a lot of attention in recent studies because of its benefits over radio‐frequency (RF) communications. It is a short‐range optical wireless communication system that uses light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) as transmitters. Optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is an auspicious technology for VLC high‐speed data transfer. The use of OFDM in a VLC system raises the system's peak‐to‐average power ratio (PAPR). The intrinsic non‐linearity of LED is a key concern in an asymmetrically clipped DC‐biased optical OFDM (ADO‐OFDM) system due to its high PAPR. Also, conventional ADO‐OFDM modulation scheme cannot be used for accommodating different demands of services in downlink multiple access due to the restriction of direct current biased optical OFDM (DCO‐OFDM) and asymmetrically clipped optical (ACO‐OFDM) transmission on odd and even subcarriers. To tackle this issue, a modified ADO‐OFDM (MADO‐OFDM) is proposed that adjusts the numbers of subcarriers required for the transmission of ACO‐OFDM and DCO‐OFDM adaptively based on the requests of services in downlink multiple access. Also, the proposed MADO‐OFDM is integrated with a discrete Hartley Matrix transform (DisHMT) precoder and Generalized Piecewise Linear Compander (GPLD) to provide high‐speed data transmission with less PAPR. In addition, the power is allocated to the proposed MADO‐OFDM system optimally by maximizing the channel capacity based on the Aquila optimizer algorithm. The simulation results reveal that the suggested system's PAPR is reduced by 2.4 dB and 0.8 dB, respectively, compared to conventional ADO and hybrid ADO‐OFDM. It also confirms that the suggested generalized PLC can greatly increase BER without affecting the PAPR performance.

Subcarrier Grouping Ofdm for Visible-Light Communication Systems

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has been widely studied and adopted in visible-light communication (VLC) systems because of its high spectral efficiency and low-complexity implementation. However, OFDM-based VLC systems suffer from a high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), along with the nonlinear transfer characteristics of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). In this paper, a subcarrier grouping scheme for an OFDM-based VLC system is proposed. This scheme exploits the property that one LED lamp usually contains multiple independent LED chips. In the proposed scheme, all OFDM signal subcarriers are divided into groups, and each group is transmitted by an individual LED chip while the same receiver structure is maintained. The PAPR is reduced significantly because only some of the subcarriers are located on each LED chip. Hence, the achievable input power can be increased, leading to a higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and a lower bit error rate (BER). Simulated and experimental results demonstrate that the BER performance can be improved by over two orders of magnitude. Moreover, an adaptive switching mechanism is also proposed in this paper, in which a subcarrier grouping scheme is employed adaptively when the required input power is high. Simulation results validate that the proposed mechanism can enhance system robustness significantly.
Piecewise Companding Transform Assisted Optical-OFDM Systems for Indoor Visible Light Communications.

Abstract:In visible light communications (VLCs) relying on intensity-modulation and direct detection (IM/DD), the conversion from electrical signals to optical signals and the limited dynamic range of the light-emitting diodes (LEDs) constitute the fundamental impediments in the way of high-integrity communications, especially when orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is employed. In IM/DD VLCs, only real-valued positive signals are used for signal transmission. However, the Fourier transform of OFDM systems is operated in the complex domain. In order to meet the requirements of the IM/DD VLCs, the complex-to-real conversion is achieved at the cost of reducing the bandwidth efficiency. Moreover, OFDM signals experience a high peak-to-average power ratio; hence, typically clipping is used for confining the positive-valued signals within the LED's dynamic range. However, hard clipping leads to the loss of orthogonality for optical OFDM (O-OFDM) signals, generating inter-carrier interference. As a result, the performance of the clipping-based O-OFDM systems may be severely degraded. In this paper, the concept of piecewise companding transform (CT) is introduced into the O-OFDM system advocated, forming the CTO-OFDM arrangement. We first investigate the general principles and design criteria of the piecewise CTO-OFDM. Based on our studies, three types of piecewise companders, namely, the constant probability sub-distribution function, linear PsDF (LPsDF), and the non-LPsDF-based CT, are designed. Furthermore, we investigate the nonlinear effect of hard clipping and of our CT on O-OFDM systems in the context of different scenarios by both analytical and simulation techniques. Our investigations show that the CTO-OFDM constitutes a promising signaling scheme conceived for VLCs, which exhibits a high bandwidth efficiency, high flexibility, high reliability, as well as a high data-rate, despite experiencing nonlinear distortions.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a visible light communication (VLC) system using continuous phase modulation (CPM) and prove its advantage in energy efficiency over orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme. Furthermore, to ensure the feasibility of broadband communications in indoor optical multipath environments, we propose algorithms including linear decomposition-based channel compensation to combat the inter-symbol-interference (ISI) and correlation matrix-based highly power-efficient CPM signal reconstruction to recover the original CPM signal without multipath effects. Additionally, in the signal reconstruction algorithm, a condition-enhanced method is proposed to solve the condition number problem of correlation matrix. The algorithms are verified and evaluated in terms of the normalized mean squared error (NMSE) simulation and bit error rate (BER) experiments. The power efficiency, the fading compensation character promote the proposed CPM transceiver to be a practical VLC candidate.

Abstract:In visible light communication (VLC) system, the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) technique has been widely used to achieve a high data rate transmission. However, OFDM will cause high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) in the VLC system. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a new interleaved Discrete Fourier Transform Spread Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (DFT-S OFDM) method. We compare the interleaved DFT-S technique to other PAPR reduction techniques, such as Clipping OFDM and conventional DFT-S. The experimental results show that interleaved DFT-S achieve FEC threshold for an overall 2.0Gb/s 32QAM signal over the 1.05m transmission. In addition, interleaved DFT-S presents significant PAPR reduction, low complexity and optimal BER performance, when compared to other techniques.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) systems are favoured for numerous applications due to their extensive bandwidth and resilience to electromagnetic interference. This study delineates various constructions of Optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (O-OFDM) approaches employed in VLC systems. Various factors are elaborated within this context to ascertain a more effective O-OFDM approach, including constellation size, data arrangement and spectral efficiency, power efficiency, computational complexity, bit error rate (BER), and peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). This paper seeks to assess these approaches' BER and PAPR performance across varying modulation orders. Regrettably, in VLC systems based on OFDM methodology, the superposition of multiple subcarriers results in a high PAPR. Therefore, this study aims to diminish the PAPR in VLC systems, enhancing system performance. We propose a non-distorting PAPR reduction technique, namely the Vandermonde-Like Matrix (VLM) precoding technique. The suggested technique is implemented across various O-OFDM approaches, including DCO-OFDM, ADO-OFDM, ACO-OFDM, FLIP-OFDM, ASCO-OFDM, and LACO-OFDM. Notably, this method does not affect the system's data rate because it does not require the mandatory transmission of side information. Furthermore, this technique can decrease the PAPR without impacting the system's BER performance. This study compares the proposed PAPR reduction technique against established methods documented in the literature to evaluate their efficacy and validity rigorously.

High-speed Quasi-Balanced Detection OFDM in Visible Light Communication.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a novel quasi-balanced detection (QBD) technique in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) visible light communication (VLC) system. By employing opposite signals to odd and even consecutive symbols, the nonlinearity distortion, and direct current can be eliminated efficiently. Additionally, the sensitivity of receiver can also be improved by 3dB, thus a longer transmission distance and high-order modulation formats can be received. We achieved physical data rate of 2.1-Gb/s enabled by wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM), pre- and post-equalization, and the resulting bit error ratios (BERs) were below the FEC limit of 3.8x10(-3). The distance was above 2.5 meters that was long enough for indoor communication. Compared with conventional direct-detection optical (DDO-OFDM) and asymmetrically-clipped optical (ACO-OFDM), the BER can be enhanced by 22.2dB and 20.8dB, respectively, which shows great potential in short range and low cost access network.

Abstract:Visible-light communication (VLC) systems leverage solid-state illumination devices to create high-speed communication links. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has been considered for these intensity-modulated/direct-detection (IM/DD) optical channels, however, it suffers from high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). Moreover, the implementation of linear, power-efficient, high-current, wideband drivers is challenging. In this paper, the concept of spatial summing is developed where wideband, high PAPR OFDM signals are partitioned into many low-PAPR narrowband signals that are transmitted from multiple LEDs. The signals from different LEDs are allowed to sum in space before being detected by a conventional OFDM receiver. Spatial optical-OFDM (SO-OFDM) is proposed in which filtered subsets of carriers are emitted by each LED. In addition, low-PAPR optical single-carrier FDMA (OSC-FDMA) is developed where different collections of LEDs act as virtual users in a multiple-access scheme. The different variations of SO-OFDM and OSC-FDMA are compared to conventional DC-biased optical (DCO) OFDM and are shown to achieve lower PAPR and more robustness to LED nonlinearities leading to error rate performance gains at high signal-to-noise ratios.

We implemented the simulation based on the new PAM-OFDM structure through MATLAB and tested the performance of VLC channel according to several different specific schemes. Our simulation results validate the high performance of the new scheme for reducing common-mode noise in the VLC system.

Abstract:This paper proposes a reshaped orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (R-OFDM) scheme for intensity modulation/direct detection visible light communication (VLC) systems, where an LED consisting of red, green, blue, and amber chips (RGBA-LED) is adopted as the transmitter. In R-OFDM, the signal is adjusted by signal separation and biasing after clipping (BAC)/scaling before clipping (SBC) operations for transmitting in the RGBA-LED. We optimize both biasing and scaling factors for the BAC and SBC operations, respectively. Correspondingly, a direct detection algorithm is developed for data recovery at receiver. Theoretical bit error rate (BER) performance of the proposed R-OFDM scheme is further analyzed. Specifically for the multicolor LED transmission, a low complexity parallel interference cancellation algorithm is also proposed for eliminating the interference caused by cross-talk in multicolor VLC channels. Numerical results over practical optical channels are presented to validate the advantage of the proposed R-OFDM scheme. It is revealed that the R-OFDM achieves noticeable performance gain in term of BER than the conventional Flip-OFDM and ACO-OFDM.

Abstract:Ellipse-based DC-biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (E-DCO-OFDM) is proposed for visible light communications (VLC), which achieves a significant peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduction, thus enhancing the overall performance when light-emitting diode (LED) nonlinearity is considered. In E-DCO-OFDM, the real-valued output of OFDM is modulated onto an ellipse, whereby only the imaginary part of the complex point on the ellipse is transmitted. Although the PAPR of E-DCO-OFDM decreases as the ratio of major radius to minor radius becomes larger, it may be more vulnerable to the effect of noise, leading to the performance loss. Therefore, the relationship between the system performance and the critical parameters in E-DCO-OFDM, such as the ratio between the major and minor radius of the ellipse, is investigated. Meanwhile, simulations demonstrate that E-DCO-OFDM adopting the optimal parameters achieves a considerable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain over the conventional DCO-OFDM.
Hybrid LACO-OFDM with Dimming Control for Visible Light Communication.

Abstract:In this paper, a dimming control scheme is proposed for visible light communication (VLC) based on layered asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM (LACO-OFDM) to satisfy different illumination requirements. The proposed scheme combines LACO-OFDM and negative LACO- OFDM (NLACO-OFDM), which is firstly introduced to the best of our knowledge, where the proportion of the two signals is variable to achieve the desired luminance. Moreover, the dynamic range is fully exploited by both LACO-OFDM and NLACO-OFDM, resulting in high channel capacity. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme has superior performance than the previous scheme based on LACO-OFDM in terms of power and spectral efficiencies.

Abstract:Direct-current-biased optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) is widely used in high-speed visible light communication (VLC). Due to the limited dynamic range of light-emitting diode (LED) and the unipolarity for the intensity modulation (IM), double-sided clipping is inevitably imposed on the time-domain signal in VLC OFDM systems. Consequently, it calls for proper DCO-OFDM signal shaping by selecting an appropriate bias and time-domain signal power to reduce the clipping distortion and achieve a higher transmission rate. In this paper, we deep dive into the signal shaping design problem for double-sided clipping DCO-OFDM over both flat and dispersive channels. We derive the optimal bias for flat and dispersive channels, and explain its optimality from the perspectives of effective signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and information theory. We then analytically characterize the optimal power for flat channels and propose a useful algorithm for dispersive channels enlightened by the optimal solution to the flat case. Furthermore, we uncover an inherent relationship between the considered double-sided clipping and the downside-clipping only DCO-OFDM regarding signal shaping optimization, and develop an in-depth understanding of the impact of top clipping based on the established connection. Practical simulations are provided to validate the superiority of our proposed signal shaping over the existing shaping schemes.
Experimental Demonstration of Zadoff–Chu Matrix Transform Precoding for MIMO-OFDM Visible Light Communications

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) based on a light-emitting diode (LED) is considered to be a potential candidate for the next-generation communication. In this paper, a novel Zadoff–Chu matrix transform (ZCT) precoding is proposed to improve the performance of the traditional space-time block coding- (STBC-) based multiple-input multiple-output and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) system. Compared with the existing orthogonal circulant matrix transform (OCT) precoding scheme, the proposed ZCT precoding achieves a much lower peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) while maintaining the advantage of the uniform signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), which reduces the performance loss caused by LED nonlinearity. To study the system performance further, we set up an experimental demonstration to verify performance improvement under the condition of different driving peak-to-peak voltages (Vpps) and direct current (DC) offsets. Experimental results show that ZCT precoding gains the best bit error rate (BER) performance compared with the traditional and the OCT precoding MIMO-OFDM systems, whose BER is always below the 7% pre-forward error correction (pre-FEC) threshold of 3.8 × 10−3.
Experimental Verification of Performance Improvement for A Gigabit Wavelength Division Multiplexing Visible Light Communication System Utilizing Asymmetrically Clipped Optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing

Abstract:Asymmetrically clipped optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ACO-OFDM) has been a promising candidate in visible light communications (VLC) due to its improvement in power efficiency and reduction of nonlinearity based on previous simulation analysis. In this paper, for the first time as far as we know, we experimentally verify that ACO-OFDM would be an efficient scheme to improve the performance of a gigabit wavelength division multiplexing VLC system. Our theoretical investigations reveal that the advantages of ACO-OFDM can be attributed to the reduction of inter-carrier interference caused by signal-signal beating noise. An aggregate data rate of 1.05 Gb/s is successfully achieved over 30 cm transmission below the 7% forward-error-correction threshold of 3.8 x 10(-3). The experimental results show that ACO-OFDM can outperform DC-biased optical OFDM by BER performance of 1.5 dB at the same data rate and 4 dB at the same bandwidth, which clearly demonstrates the benefit and feasibility of ACO-OFDM. Multiuser Mimo-Ofdm for Visible Light Communications

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) is emerging as a promising technique to provide ubiquitous wireless connection. In this paper, a multiuser VLC system utilizing multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is investigated. Since the distances of the multiple transmitter-receiver links are different, their temporal delays are also different, resulting in complex channel gain and phase differences when transformed to the frequency domain. For each subcarrier in OFDM, the corresponding precoding matrix is calculated in the frequency domain to eliminate multiuser interference. Phase information in the frequency domain is first considered, where complex, instead of real, channel matrices are used for precoding, which reduces the channel correlation and achieves better performance. Moreover, minimum dc bias, unified dc bias, and asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM-based schemes are proposed to generate real-valued nonnegative signals for intensity modulation, and their performances are validated via simulations with zero forcing and minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) precoding techniques.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) has emerged as a promising alternative for indoor and vehicular wireless communication, offering several advantages over traditional radio frequency (RF) technology. With the adoption of optical-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (O-OFDM) schemes, visible light communication (VLC) has become more robust and adaptable in indoor, outdoor, vehicular, and underwear communications. Recently, an orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation technique has evolved with better performance than OFDM. The recent finding in the context of VLC shows that the OTFS technique shows remarkable advantages over conventional OFDM techniques except for the modem design complexity. This work introduces a low-complexity direct current-biased optical OTFS (DCO-OTFS) modulation based on OFDM. This paper evaluates the proposed system's performance through simulations, providing evidence of its bit-error-rate (BER), peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), and complexity behavior. Comparative assessments against the DCO-OFDM system are presented to understand the advantages of the low-complex DCO-OTFS system. The findings reveal that the proposed system not only provides low computational complexity in modem design but also maintains superior error performance, with a notable 10 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain over DCO-OFDM along with a superior PAPR, making it a commendable choice for VLC applications.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has been widely used in visible light communication systems to achieve high-rate data transmission. Due to the nonlinear transfer characteristics of light emitting diodes (LEDs) and owing the high peak-to-average-power ratio of OFDM signals, the transmitted signal has to be scaled and biased before modulating the LEDs. In this contribution, an adaptive scaling and biasing scheme is proposed for OFDM-based visible light communication systems, which fully exploits the dynamic range of the LEDs and improves the achievable system performance. Specifically, the proposed scheme calculates near-optimal scaling and biasing factors for each specific OFDM symbol according to the distribution of the signals, which strikes an attractive trade-off between the effective signal power and the clipping-distortion power. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme significantly improves the performance without changing the LED's emitted power, while maintaining the same receiver structure.
