Abstract:We propose and investigate discrete-circulant transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCrT-S-OFDM) for bandwidth-limited optical systems. We derive the conditions for optimal designs of DCrT-S-OFDM in the noise limited scenarios and verify its bit error rate advantage over conventional OFDM. We also analytically investigate the performance of DCrT-S-OFDM under the effect of inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-carrier interference (ICI), and prove its performance advantage over discrete-Fourier-transform spread OFDM (DFT-S-OFDM). Based on the developed theory, we propose several novel designs of DCrT-S-OFDM to achieve optimal or near-optimal performance. Extensive simulations have been performed in a visible light communication (VLC) system to validate the findings. The results agree with the theory and verify the performance advantage of DCrT-S-OFDM over other schemes. Finally, a ∼650-Mbit/s VLC system with ∼70-MHz 3-dB system bandwidth was experimentally demonstrated. The results also confirm that DCrT-S-OFDM outperforms conventional OFDM and DFT-S-OFDM, making the proposed DCrT-S-OFDM a promising solution for optical systems using low-bandwidth devices to achieve high data rates.

Abstract:DFT-Spread OFDM has been well studied in radio frequency (RF) systems thanks to its effectiveness in reducing the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). However, due to the inherent positive real signal constraint in visible light communications (VLC), the implementation of DFT-Spread OFDM in VLC faces some different challenges with respect to its high PAPR. This paper presents an LED array assisted visible light communication system using DFT-Spread OFDM. With this technique, theoretical analysis are firstly derived to help characterize the system PAPR reduction in VLC systems. Specifically, two different subcarrier allocation modes namely localized DFT-Spread and interleaved DFT-Spread OFDM are explicitly studied with their time domain signal expressions. Moreover, based on the results, detailed comparisons of DFT-Spread OFDM in terms of PAPR reduction are made for VLC and RF systems. Simulation results show that the proposed system not only leads to a reduced PAPR, but also achieves a performance gain in BER without any loss of system transmission rate.

Abstract:In this paper, a direct current biased optical orthogonal time frequency space (DCO-OTFS) based full-duplex relay-assisted visible light communication system is proposed to enhance the spectral efficiency of visible light communications (VLC). The DCO-OTFS modulation method is described and the spectral efficiency of the system is analyzed. Simulation results indicate that the proposed method can achieve higher spectrum efficiency and robustness than the traditional direct current biased optical orthogonal frequency division modulation (DCO-OFDM).

Abstract:DC-biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) has been proposed in visible light communication (VLC) to overcome the limited modulation bandwidth of light emitting diode (LED). Due to the implementation of the inverse fast Fourier transform at the DCO-OFDM transmitter, DCO-OFDM suffers from its high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), which restricts its use in some VLC applications, especially where the optical power efficiency is a crucial requirement. That is because the LEDs used in VLC systems have a limited optical power-current linear range. To this end, a novel discrete Fourier transform spread-optical pulse amplitude modulation (DFTS-OPAM) signal scheme based on the single carrier-interleaved frequency division multiple access (SC-IFDMA) signal is introduced in this paper to address the high PAPR issue of OFDM. DFTS-OPAM is achieved by considering a PAM as an SC-IFDMA data symbol and duplicate the output vector of the fast Fourier transform at the SC-IFDMA transmitter side. Simulation results show that the PAPR of the proposed scheme is 7 dB lower than that of DCO-OFDM. Furthermore, this significant PAPR improvement is experimentally investigated where the practical results show that the proposed scheme can provide more 2.5 dB reduction in the average transmitted power requirement compared to DCO-OFDM and can subsequently increase the maximum achieved distance between the transmitter and the receiver up to 44%.

Abstract:Combined with the discrete sine transform (DST) and discrete cosine transform (DCT),a novel DST/DCT direct current bias-discrete multitone(DC-DMT) modulation scheme is proposed.This method is able to expand the number of independent subcarriers without increasing the complexity of system,and it is expected to improve the transmission rate of visible light system.The bit error rate (BER) expression of the modulation scheme and the complementary cumulative distribution of peak-to-average power ratio(PAPR) are derived.The effects of clipping noise on the BER performance of DMT,direct current-biased optical-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) and asymmetrically clipped optical-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ACOOFDM) visible light systems are analyzed.The results show that the theoretical BER is consistent with the simulation results,and the BER performance of the proposed scheme is better at the same transmission rate compared with that of other methods.The distribution of PAPR is independent of the modulation order but increases with subcarrier number N.When N is larger,the theoretical conclusions match the simulation results.At the same transmission rate,the simulation results show that the BER performances of DST/DCT DC-DMT and DCO-OFDM are similar in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR),which are better than those of PAM-DMT,DC-DMT and ACO-OFDM;however,the BER performance degrades in high SNR due to the clipping noise.

Abstract:In this paper, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with differential index modulation (OFDM-DIM) is proposed for visible light communication. Compared with traditional OFDM with index modulation (OFDM-IM), the proposed scheme decreases the average number of used subcarriers when transmits the same amount of information bits, therefore higher spectral efficiency can be achieved. The simulation results present that OFDM-DIM can provide higher data transmission rate and lower bit error rate (BER) over additive white gaussian noise (AWGN) optical channel. Meanwhile, simulations over reference channels of short range optical wireless communication are implemented, where OFDM-DIM performances better than OFDM-IM when line-of-sight (LOS) components are dominant.

Abstract:Dual-mode index modulation aided orthogonal frequency multiplexing (DM-OFDM) is recently proposed, where the spectral efficiency is enhanced compared with conventional OFDM schemes. In this paper, we propose two different optical DM-OFDM schemes for visible light communications, dual-mode index modulation aided DC-biased optical OFDM (DM-DCO-OFDM) and dual-mode index modulation aided unipolar OFDM (DM-U-OFDM). In the optical DM-OFDM schemes, subcarriers are partitioned into OFDM subblocks, divided into two groups within each subblock, and modulated by two different modes of constellations. Additional information bits can be transmitted implicitly by the indices of subcarriers modulated by the same constellation alphabet. In order to generate non-negative signals, the real-valued time-domain signals are DC-biased in DM-DCO-OFDM, whilst positive and negative signals are transmitted separately in DM-U-OFDM. At the receiver, both a maximum-likelihood (ML) detector and a log-likelihood ratio (LLR) detector are employed for signal demodulation. Besides, simulation results demonstrate that the proposed optical DM-OFDM schemes are capable of enhancing the spectral efficiency compared with other existing optical OFDM schemes, and DM-DCO-OFDM as well as DM-U-OFDM can achieve significant performance gains over their conventional counterparts at the same spectral efficiency, when the nonlinear transfer characteristic of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) is considered.

Abstract:Ellipse-based DC-biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (E-DCO-OFDM) is proposed for visible light communications (VLC), which achieves a significant peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduction, thus enhancing the overall performance when light-emitting diode (LED) nonlinearity is considered. In E-DCO-OFDM, the real-valued output of OFDM is modulated onto an ellipse, whereby only the imaginary part of the complex point on the ellipse is transmitted. Although the PAPR of E-DCO-OFDM decreases as the ratio of major radius to minor radius becomes larger, it may be more vulnerable to the effect of noise, leading to the performance loss. Therefore, the relationship between the system performance and the critical parameters in E-DCO-OFDM, such as the ratio between the major and minor radius of the ellipse, is investigated. Meanwhile, simulations demonstrate that E-DCO-OFDM adopting the optimal parameters achieves a considerable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain over the conventional DCO-OFDM.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) plays a vital role in enabling the Internet of Things (IoT), providing both high-speed, secure communication and illumination through the use of existing lighting devices. However, there is often a conflict between the communication and illumination requirements of systems, particularly regarding the power of the transmitted optical signal when employing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) for communication due to its higher peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). The DFT precoding method has been effective in reducing the PAPR in optical OFDM systems. Nevertheless, the combined communication and illumination performance of OFDM systems after DFT precoding has not been thoroughly analyzed, including aspects such as the optimal selection of the dimension of the DFT precoding matrix. This study focuses on developing an analytical model for the clipping noise in communication signals and illumination within DFT-precoded VLC systems, specifically within the context of asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM (ACO-OFDM) in systems constrained by bandwidth and power limitations. We introduce a new analytical tool, the weighted Bussgang theorem, to analyze the clipping noise in non-Gaussian DFT-precoded OFDM signals. Furthermore, we identify a trade-off between clipping effects resulting from power constraints and the performance of illumination, providing insights into selecting the appropriate dimension for the DFT-precoding matrix based on varying illumination requirements. Additionally, we suggest utilizing a power index within the OFDM system to adjust signal strength, thereby balancing clipping distortion and illumination performance. Simulation results validate the efficacy of our analytical approach, demonstrating improved bit rates in adjustable illumination DFT-ACO-OFDM systems compared to non-DFT-precoded alternatives.

Abstract:In conventional optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OOFDM) systems, such as pulse-amplitude-modulated discrete multitone (PAM-DMT) and asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM (ACO-OFDM), half of the time-domain transmitted signals carry meaningful information, while the other half are set at zero after asymmetric clipping. By specifically exploiting the asymmetric structure of OOFDM such as PAM-DMT and ACO-OFDM, we present a new framework for implementing OOFDM with enhanced performance in terms of both bit error rate (BER) and peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). The proposed scheme introduces asymmetric signal reconstruction, instead of direct clipping, in the time domain before transmission. The designed asymmetric reconstruction refines the time-domain statistics of the OOFDM signals by constructively exploiting zero-padded signal positions in conventional OOFDMs. This way, the PAPR of the reconstructed OOFDM signals is effectively reduced. For receivers, to recover the received signals precisely, we further develop an optimal maximum a posteriori detection method, along with an efficient simplified method. Simulation results validate that the proposed scheme enhances the BER performance compared with conventional OOFDMs under both an ideal and a dispersive visible light communication (VLC) channel via our prototype. Specifically, under an ideal additive white Gaussian noise channel, an approximately 4-dB gain is achieved at the BER of 10(-2), along with a 2.5-dB lower PAPR constraint. While under the real dispersive channel, our test shows about 6-dB gain in BER performance.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has been widely studied and adopted in visible-light communication (VLC) systems because of its high spectral efficiency and low-complexity implementation. However, OFDM-based VLC systems suffer from a high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), along with the nonlinear transfer characteristics of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). In this paper, a subcarrier grouping scheme for an OFDM-based VLC system is proposed. This scheme exploits the property that one LED lamp usually contains multiple independent LED chips. In the proposed scheme, all OFDM signal subcarriers are divided into groups, and each group is transmitted by an individual LED chip while the same receiver structure is maintained. The PAPR is reduced significantly because only some of the subcarriers are located on each LED chip. Hence, the achievable input power can be increased, leading to a higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and a lower bit error rate (BER). Simulated and experimental results demonstrate that the BER performance can be improved by over two orders of magnitude. Moreover, an adaptive switching mechanism is also proposed in this paper, in which a subcarrier grouping scheme is employed adaptively when the required input power is high. Simulation results validate that the proposed mechanism can enhance system robustness significantly.
Wide-range Dimmable Clipped Flip-OFDM For Indoor Visible Light Communications

Abstract:Combination of illumination and communication is a key characteristic of visible light communications. Different environments require different illumination levels. When the desired dimming level is relatively low or high, conventional optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (O-OFDM) will suffer severe performance deterioration due to the clipping noise. This paper proposes a novel O-OFDM scheme named clipped flip-OFDM for indoor visible light communication systems with dimming control. In the proposed clipped flip-OFDM scheme, we design a new OFDM frame structure to keep the clipped information. We can achieve different dimming levels by adjusting the values of the direct-current (DC) bias and a control factor. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed clipped flip-OFDM scheme is less affected by the dimming level. Simulation results verify that the proposed clipped flip-OFDM achieves a wide dimming range, and the achievable spectral efficiency is stable.

Abstract:Visible-light communication (VLC) systems leverage solid-state illumination devices to create high-speed communication links. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has been considered for these intensity-modulated/direct-detection (IM/DD) optical channels, however, it suffers from high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). Moreover, the implementation of linear, power-efficient, high-current, wideband drivers is challenging. In this paper, the concept of spatial summing is developed where wideband, high PAPR OFDM signals are partitioned into many low-PAPR narrowband signals that are transmitted from multiple LEDs. The signals from different LEDs are allowed to sum in space before being detected by a conventional OFDM receiver. Spatial optical-OFDM (SO-OFDM) is proposed in which filtered subsets of carriers are emitted by each LED. In addition, low-PAPR optical single-carrier FDMA (OSC-FDMA) is developed where different collections of LEDs act as virtual users in a multiple-access scheme. The different variations of SO-OFDM and OSC-FDMA are compared to conventional DC-biased optical (DCO) OFDM and are shown to achieve lower PAPR and more robustness to LED nonlinearities leading to error rate performance gains at high signal-to-noise ratios.

Abstract:In visible light communication (VLC) system, the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) technique has been widely used to achieve a high data rate transmission. However, OFDM will cause high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) in the VLC system. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a new interleaved Discrete Fourier Transform Spread Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (DFT-S OFDM) method. We compare the interleaved DFT-S technique to other PAPR reduction techniques, such as Clipping OFDM and conventional DFT-S. The experimental results show that interleaved DFT-S achieve FEC threshold for an overall 2.0Gb/s 32QAM signal over the 1.05m transmission. In addition, interleaved DFT-S presents significant PAPR reduction, low complexity and optimal BER performance, when compared to other techniques.
