Abstract:In present work, a superlubricity phenomenon of phosphoric acid (H(3)PO(4)) was found under ambient conditions. An ultralow friction coefficient of about 0.004 between glass/Si(3)N(4) and sapphire/sapphire tribopairs was obtained under the lubrication of a phosphoric acid aqueous solution (pH 1.5) at high contact pressure (the maximum pressure can reach about 1.65 GPa) after a running-in period of about 600 s. The experimental results indicate that the superlow friction state was very stable for more than 3 h. In such a state, solidlike films formed on the two sliding surfaces, which are hydrates of phosphoric acid with a hydrogen-bonded network according to the Raman spectrum. The superlubricity mechanism is mainly attributed to the hydrogen bond effect that forms a hydrated water layer with low shearing strength, and the dipole-dipole effects that form an interfacial Coulomb repulsion force also make some contributions to low friction. This work may help us to introduce a new approach to superlubricity and may lead to the wide application of superlubricity in future technological and biomedical areas.

Abstract:In this work, the contact region between a Si3N4 ball and a SiO2 plate with the lubrication of phosphoric acid solution is observed directly by an optical microscope combined with a Raman microscope to understand the superlubricity mechanism. It is found that the wear on the friction surfaces mainly occurs at the beginning of the test and nearly disappears after the friction coefficient reduces to 0.05. When the superlubricity appears (mu = 0.004), there is only a limited amount of solution available to the contact (forming starvation state), resulting in an "H" distribution surrounding the contact region. Moreover, it is observed that the hydrogen bond effect in the solution is enhanced with time going by, and finally a thin film with hydrogen bond network among H3PO4, H2PO4-, and H2O is formed on the friction surfaces, leading to the superlubricity. By employing this direct observation approach, the structure of the confined solution and the superlubricity mechanism of phosphoric acid solution are finally investigated and discussed. Abstract:In this work, superlubricity between glass and Si3N4 surfaces lubricated by mixtures of acid solutions and glycerol solutions has been found by using a traditional tribometer. Ultra low friction coefficients of between 0.004 and 0.006 were obtained after a running-in period. Related experiments indicate that the hydrogen ions in the mixtures play an important role in achieving superlubricity. Moreover, the ultralow friction is also closely related to the pH value of the acid and the concentration of glycerol. According to these results, the possible superlubricity mechanism has been revealed, which is attributed to a fluid-hydrated water layer between the hydrogen-bonded networks of glycerol and water molecules on the positively charged surfaces.

Abstract:The superlubricity mechanism of phospholipid molecules on biological surfaces and interfaces has been receiving much attention. Since the superlubricity can be achieved with a phosphoric acid aqueous solution, the interaction of the phosphate group with the water molecule is considered to be the key to bio-lubrication. However, no direct evidence has been offered to distinctly interpret the underlying mechanism of superlubricity, due to the limitations in the method for the detection of interfacial molecules, especially water molecules on the interface. By using sum-frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy, which is extremely sensitive to interfacial molecules, the authors were able to explore the underlying microscopic mechanism for superlubricity in a phosphoric acid system, which might be related to interfacial water molecules. By trapping the phosphoric acid aqueous solution between silicon nitride and silica surfaces, they discovered that phosphoric acid could exercise a great influence on the ordered structure of interfacial water molecules, contributing to SFG spectral changes in the broad O–H bond stretching region. This work directly revealed the interfacial interaction between water and phosphoric acid molecules in liquid superlubricity interfaces, which could shed new light on the microscopic mechanism of liquid superlubricity.

Abstract:In this work, a super-low friction coefficient of 0.003 was found between a silicon nitride ball and a sapphire plate lubricated by phosphoric acid solution. The wear mainly occurred in the running-in period and disappeared after superlubricity was achieved. The friction coefficient was effectively reduced from 0.3 to 0.003 at a constant speed of 0.076 m/s, accompanied by a 12-nm-thickness film. The lubrication regime was indicated to change from boundary lubrication in the running-in period to elastohydrodynamic lubrication in the superlubricity period, which is also supported by the results of the friction coefficient versus sliding speed. In addition, the experimental results showed good agreement with theoretical calculations based on the elastohydrodynamic lubrication theory, suggesting a significant hydrodynamic effect of phosphoric acid on superlubricity.
Superlubricity of Si 3 N 4 sliding against SiO 2 under linear contact conditions in phosphoric acid solutions

Abstract:Superlubricity phenomena, which were previously achieved merely under point contact conditions, have been observed under the linear contact condition between the silicon nitride (Si 3 N 4 ) cylinder and the silica (SiO 2 ) ring in phosphoric acid solutions. After a total 800 s running-in period and low friction stage, the friction coefficient finally declined to about 0.003. The ultralow friction coefficient could last for more than 5 h. In these experiments, a torque sensor of high accuracy was used to make sure that the measuring result was credible. The differences between superlubricity experiments in our group and others were discussed. Unlike the situations in other superlubricity experiments about silicon nitride, where the specimens were immersed in water totally, the phosphoric acid solution with volume of only 150 μL was used in these tests. It was proved that free water in the solution had a great relationship to the necessary time of acquiring superlubricity and phosphoric acid played a unique role in the superlubricity, which could not be explained properly by the hydrodynamic lubrication model proposed by others. Finally, based on the results of the friction tests and the analysis with scanning electron microscope (SEM), a modified hydrogen-bonded network and hydrated shearing layer model was proposed to explain the mechanism of superlubricity.

Abstract:1.INTRODUCTION In the physical researches, friction phenomenon that describes the force existing between relative moving surfaces paves a great challenge to the industrial production and the energy efficiency. The friction reduction or elimination in the moving mechanical system would be extremely favorable to the industrial manufacture and the sustainable development of the earth. Therefore, the phenomenon “superlubricity” [1] that refers to friction coefficient less than 0.01 has become an appealing focus in recent years. Superlubricity has been attained both between solid interfaces and across liquid medium. The carbon based materials and two-dimensional materials, such as Molybdenum disulfide [2] and diamond like carbon film (DLC) [3] have been investigated mostly to achieve solid superlubricity. Different from the mechanism of solid superlubricity, the liquid superlubricity was mainly focused on the reduction of shear strength of confined liquid between two friction surfaces. On micro-level, Raviv et al. obtained a super-low friction of alkali salt solutions between mica surfaces by surface force apparatus (SFA) [4]. The liquid superlubricity above was mainly attributed to the hydration effect, leading to the great reduction of energy dissipation in the hydration layer [5]. At macro-scale, there are also some materials found having liquid superlubricity properties. Kato found that superlubricity can be achieved when water was confined between ceramics, where the formation of silica gel provided an efficient boundary lubrication [6]. Recently phosphoric acid solution was found to achieve superlubricity with a friction coefficient of 0.004 [7]. Compared with the solid superlubricity, the water-based superlubricity is more promising for industrial application, because of its nonsensitive to environment conditions. It is interesting and feasible to explore the water-based liquid superlubricity based on other mechanisms. In the present work, we investigated the friction properties of acid solution and a super-low friction coefficient of 0.004 was achieved between polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and sapphire without a running-in process. Here the friction properties were explored with different sliding velocity and pH value of the lubricant, and a further investigation on the mechanism through which superlubricity is obtained has been performed.

Abstract:Boric acid is a weak acid and has been used as a lubrication additive because of its special structure. In this study, we report that boric acid could achieve a robust superlubricity (mu < 0.01) as an additive in polyethylene glycol (PEG) aqueous solution at the Si3N4/SiO2 interfaces. The superlow and steady friction coefficient of approximately 0.004-0.006 could be achieved with boric acid under neutral conditions (pH of approximately 6.4), which is different from the acidic conditions leading to superlubricity. The influence of various factors, including boric acid concentration, sliding speed, applied load, PEG molecular weight, and the volume of lubricant on the superlubricity, were investigated. The results reveal that the PEG aqueous solution with the boric acid additive could achieve superlubricity under a wide range of conditions. The surface composition analysis shows that the synergy effect between boric acid and PEG provides sufficient H+ ions to realize the running-in process. Moreover, a composite tribochemical film composed of silica and ammonia-containing compounds were formed on the ball surface, contributing to the superlubricity. The film thickness calculation shows that superlubricity was achieved in a mixed lubrication region, and therefore, the superlubricity state was dominated by both the composite tribochemical film formed via the tribochemical reaction on the contact surfaces and the hydrodynamic lubricating film between the contact surfaces. Such a liquid superlubricity achieved under neutral conditions is of importance for both scientific understanding and engineering applications.

Abstract:Friction behavior of aqueous solution at macroscale is quite different from that at nanoscale. At macroscale, tribochemistry usually occurs between lubricant and friction surfaces in the running-in process due to a high contact pressure, and most such processes can lead to friction reduction. In the present work, we reported that the hydrogen ions in aqueous solution played an important role in tribochemistry in running-in process (friction reducing process), which could result in the friction coefficient reducing from 0.4 to 0.04 between Si(3)N(4) and glass surfaces at macroscale. It is found that the running-in process and low friction state are closely dependent on the concentration of hydrogen ions in the contact region between the two friction surfaces. The lubrication mechanism is attributed to tribochemical reaction occurring between hydrogen ions and surfaces in the running-in process, which forms an electrical double layer and hydration layer to lower friction force. Finally, the running-in process of H(3)PO(4) (pH = 1.5) was investigated, which could realize superlubricity with an ultralow friction coefficient of about 0.004.

Abstract:In the present work, we show that the superlubricity can be achieved when the polyhydroxy alcohol solutions are mixed with acid solutions. The lowest friction coefficients between 0.003 and 0.006 are obtained on a traditional tribometer with a high pressure under the lubrication of these mixtures. Experimental results indicate that the superlubricity mechanism is in accordance with that under the lubrication of the mixture of glycerol and acid solutions in the study by Li et al. (Li, J. J.; :Zhang, C. H.; Ma, L. R.; Liu, Y. H.; Luo, J. B. Superlubricity achieved with mixtures of acids and glycerol. Langmuir 2013, 29, 271-275). It is also found that the superlubricity is closely dependent upon the concentration of polyhydroxy alcohol and the number of hydroxyl groups in the molecular structure of polyhydroxy alcohol. However, the number of carbon atoms and the arrangement of hydroxyl groups in the molecular structure almost have no effect on superlubricity.
Tribochemical mechanism of superlubricity of phosphoric acid : a reactive molecular dynamics study

Abstract:The achievement of further reduction or even elimination of friction, i.e. the so-called superlubricity [1], is a challenging goal of human beings. In the past decade, there were a few studies on superlubricity mechanism, some focus on the tribochemical reactions [2-4]. In this context, one should expect the phase transition or tribochemical products would lead to an interfacial structure with low shear strength. In a recent remarkable experimental effort made by Li et al., a silica/phosphoric acid (PA) system was examined [5]. Noticeably, there was significant tribochemical reaction in the running-in period, during which the friction coefficient decreased drastically to below 0.01, and a gel-like film was formed on the surface. This phenomenon indicates that the tribochemical reaction plays an important role in this superlubricity system. Shedding light on this system from atomistic scale would thus greatly assist building up a tribochemical theory of superlubricity. For this reason, in the present study, a state of PA superlubricity is simulated by reactive molecular dynamics where the extremely low friction (COF=0.02) is achieved by water molecules generation with tribochemical reaction.

Abstract:A super-low friction coefficient of 0.0028 is measured under a pressure of 300 MPa when the friction pair (the silicon nitride ball sliding on the silicate glass) is lubricated by the mixed aqueous solution of glycerol and boric acid. The morphorlogies of the hydroxylated glass plate are observed by an atomic force microscope (AFM) in deionized water, glycerol, boric acid and their mixed aqueous solution. Bonding peaks of the retained liquids adhered on the surface of the sliding track are detected by an infrared spectrum apparatus and a Raman spectrum apparatus. The mechanism of the superlubricity of the glycerol and boric acid mixed aqueous solution is discussed. It is deduced that the formation of the lubricant film has enough strength to support higher loads, the hydration effect offering the super lower shear resistance. Abstract:The friction process of superlubricity (μ = 0.004) obtained by phosphoric acid solution has been investigated by a traditional tribometer. The evolution of friction coefficient with time indicates that the friction process of superlubricity is divided into three stages, i.e. friction reducing rapidly process, low friction process and superlubricity process. The feature of these three stages is discussed according to several experiments. The result indicates that the contact region in superlubricity state is a three layer structure formed after the first stage and the second stage, which is the origin of ultra-low friction.

Abstract:The field of superlubricity is garnering significant global interest amid the ongoing energy crisis. Various liquids can achieve superlubricity under ambient conditions; however, this limits their applications, such as in acidic environments. Consequently, enhancing anti-wear properties and reducing the coefficient of friction (COF) have become pressing challenges. Graphene-based materials are being extensively studied for tribological applications, attributed to their unique molecular structures and lubricating properties, often serving as lubricating additives to significantly reduce COF. In this study, graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets were utilized as lubricating additives in phosphoric acid (H3PO4; pH=1.5) to explore lubrication enhancement in acidic environments. An ultralow COF of 0.001 was achieved, accompanied by reduced surface roughness and increased contact pressure (by 96.42%), following the lubrication with GO-H3PO4. The reduction in COF post-lubrication with GO-H3PO4 is ascribed to three primary factors: the formation of a tribofilm via chemical reactions (comprising silica and phosphorus oxide layers), the hydrogen bond effect leading to a hydrated water layer with low shear strength, and the adsorption of GO nanosheets on the friction surface, facilitating friction transfer from Si3N4/Si3N4 to GO/GO.

Abstract:In this study, we address the superlubricity behavior of sapphire against ruby (or sapphire against itself) under phosphoric acid solution lubrication. An ultra-low friction coefficient of 0.004 was obtained under a very high contact pressure, with a virgin contact pressure up to 2.57 GPa. Related experiments have indicated that the load, sliding speed, and humidity of the test environment can affect superlubricity to some degree, so we tested variations in these conditions. When superlubricity appears in this study a thin film is present, consisting of a hydrogen bond network of phosphoric acid and water molecules adsorbed on the two friction surfaces, which accounts for the ultra-low friction. Most significantly, the wear rate of the sapphire and ruby in the friction process is very slow and the superlubricity state is very stable, providing favorable conditions for future technological applications.

Abstract:The step-by-step evolution of the friction coefficient and substrate damage during the superlubricity degeneration of Si3N4/glass pair lubricated with H3PO4 solution was investigated. The experimental results indicate that the degeneration process experiences two stages after superlubricity failure. The superlubricity state initially degenerates to the ordinary lubrication state, gradually destabilizes, and eventually fails. Further analysis demonstrates that superlubricity degeneration is mainly attributed to serious substrate damage; however, the subsequent lubrication failure is mainly caused by the insufficient amount of lubricant. Moreover, load, not speed, plays a pivotal role in the wear behavior of substrate surface and further affects the superlubricity stability. The results may reveal the degeneration mechanism of liquid superlubricity and optimize the operation and design of superlubricant systems.

Abstract:Notable lubrication performance was found using lactic acid solutions between two solid surfaces, silica glass against silicon nitride. The sliding friction coefficient was as low as 0.02 under a Hertzian contact pressure up to 400 MPa with a quite low concentration of 0.085 mol L−1. The results in the present work also exhibit the significant effect of concentration on the running-in process. A shortened running-in period, which could be contributed to the effective adsorption of the lactic acid molecules on the solid substrates, could be obtained by increasing the concentration of the lactic acid solution. In addition, surface hydroxyl groups gained by piranha solution were suggested to effectively reduce the friction. The work suggests that the excellent lubricity of lactic acid can be mostly contributed to the surface adsorption combined with the surface hydroxylation.

Abstract:In order to achieve well-performing chemical strengthening behavior, the composition of 86.12(xSiO(2)-yAl(2)O(3)-zP(2)O(5))- 9.95Na(2)O- 1.27ZnO- 2.66Li(2)O (x = 55-85wt%, y = 10-40wt% and z = 5-35wt%) were prepared by conventional melt-quenching technique. The glass forming region was obtained. Two compositional series of 65SiO(2)-yAl(2)O(3)-zP(2)O(5) (15 <= y <= 30, 5 <= z <= 30, 5 <= z <= 20) (Series I) and xSiO(2)-20%Al2O3-zP(2)O(5) (60 <= x <= 75, 5 <= z <= 20) (Series II) have been investigated. The relationship between glass structure and composition was investigated. The results show that the transparent and homogeneous glass is formed when the glass former P2O5 is lower than or equal to 15 wt% roughly. The P2O5 substitution for Al2O3 accelerates the depolymerization of aluminosilicate network. Phosphorus acts as network formers in the form of P-1 and P-2 units. In the case of the P2O5 substitution for SiO2, the roles of phosphorus in the glass network include P-0, P-1, P-2 and P-3 units. Furthermore, the Series I and Series II glass samples were chemical strengthened. The ion-exchange depth and the elastic modulus before and after chemical strengthening were studied. The results reveal that the ion exchange depth and elasticity modulus after chemical strengthening is maximum at 64 mu m and 80.5 GPa for x/z = 5.4 sample, respectively. The addition of phosphorus accelerates ion exchange, which is mainly attributed to the formation of ion channels. The number of P-n and the coordination number of phosphorus are the main factors effecting the ion channels.
