Abstract:Liquid lubricant of low affinity makes slippery coatings widely used in lubricating, anti-biofouling, anti-icing, fluid guiding, and drag reduction. Two critical challenges, however, remain in the practical application of slippery coatings consisting of liquid lubricants: (1) universality regardless of roughness and chemical composition of substrates, (2) stability of surface lubricity against evaporation. Herein, a chemical method is reported to create a universal and stable slippery lubricant-adhesive cooperated coating (SLACC) through acid catalyzed dehydration reaction between the phenolic hydroxyl of polydopamine (PDA), with universal (for challenge-1) and strong (for challenge-2) adhesion properties, and liquid-like polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), with lubricant properties. Through overlying PDMS on PDA, a spatial gradient interpenetration of chemical combined PDA and PDMS leaving lubricant PDMS at the outermost of coating is achieved. This structure contributes to the following performances of SLACC: nearly universality suitable for 100 different abiotic or biotic substrates and stability sustainable for long-term usages, UV radiating, refrigerating, hot air drying, freeze drying, knife scratch and abrasion. This proposed strategy is envisioned anti-fouling from plane to tube and exhibits drag reduction in confined space.

Abstract:This study achieved water-based superlubricity with the lubrication of H3PO4 solution in vacuum (highest vacuum degree <10–4 torr) for the first time by performing a pre-running process in air before running in vacuum. The stable water-based superlubricity was sustainable in vacuum (0.02 torr) for 14 h until the test was stopped by the user for non-experimental factor. A further analysis suggested that the superlubricity may be attributed to the phosphoric acid–water network formed in air, which can efficiently lock water molecules in the liquid lubricating film even in vacuum owing to the strong hydrogen bond interaction. Such capability to lock water is strongly affected by the strength of hydrogen bond and environmental conditions. The realization of water-based superlubricity with H3PO4 solution in vacuum can lead to its application in space environment.

Abstract:Ultralow friction coefficient (μ) of a polyalkylene glycol (PAG) aqueous solution obtained in both droplet state (40 μL) and full immersion state after a running‐in period. Here, two key factors in achieving the superlubricity state (μ < 0.01) demonstrated: the low shearing strength of the hydrated layer and the presence of a suitable amount of free water molecules. In the initial running‐in period, a decrease in contact pressure contributes to the formation of elastohydrodynamic behavior of fluid. The hydrogen‐bonded PAG chains produce a hydrated layer between two sliding solid surfaces so as to lower the shear strength. The presence of free water molecules effectively weakens interactions between polymer chains. Therefore, the superlubricity state can be realized over a wide range of concentrations (30–60 wt%). Present work shows the mechanism of a stable lubricating system with superior tribological properties, and has a significant potential in industrial applications.

Abstract:The sensitivities to operation conditions may reduce the reliability and stability of liquid superlubricity and limit industrial application of the lubrication system. Here, we demonstrated that the superlubricity of Si3N4/glass sliding interface lubricated with H3PO4 solution degenerated as speed/load decreased or increased, which was temporary or permanent depending on the different shear-induced evolutions of substrate surface topographies. The smooth contacting surface produced in superlubricity stage could be maintained during the temporary superlubricity failure at decreased speed/load condition and the superlubricity was restored when speed/load was recovered. Differently, severe wear induced by high load/speed disabled the hydration lubricating layer and resulted in irreversible superlubricity degeneration. Finally, the relationship between the lubrication state of liquid superlubricity system and the sliding surface roughness was established.

Abstract:Abstract Currently, macroscale liquid superlubricity remains limited to low applied loads and typical ceramic friction pairs. In this study, a robust macroscale superlubricity with a coefficient of friction (COF) of approximately 0.006 is realized at the bearing steel interface induced by protic ionic liquids (ILs) in propylene glycol aqueous solution, and the lubrication system exhibits excellent anti-corrosion properties. Results show that superlubricity can be achieved by employing ILs with longer alkyl chains over a wide load ( 700 r/min) range. By systematically investigating factors affecting superlubricity, including the IL structure, ionization degree, test conditions, polyol, water-to-alcohol ratio, and lubrication state, the superlubricity mechanism is discussed. Notably, a thicker and denser stern layer can be formed using ILs with longer alkyl chains, which participates in the tribochemical reaction with the metal substrate to form a tribofilm during rubbing. The hydrogen bond network layer formed by the hydrogen ion and polycol aqueous solution can withstand high applied loads. Water can be used to reduce the shear stress of polyols, and enable superlubricity to be achieved under high-speed rotations. Moreover, an inevitable running-in period serves as a dispersing contact stress and dynamically forms a lubricating film, where the lubrication state locates mixed lubrication and then transforms into boundary lubrication as the roughness of the contact surface increases. This study is expected to significantly promote the development and application of superlubricity in the engineering field.

Abstract:Superlubricating materials can greatly reduce the energy consumed and economic losses by unnecessary friction. However, a long pre-running-in period is indispensable for achieving superlubricity; this leads to severe wear on the surface of friction pairs and has become one of the important factors in the wear of superlubricating materials. In this study, a polyethylene glycol-tannic acid complex green liquid lubricant (PEG10000-TA) was designed to achieve macroscale superlubricity with an ultrashort running-in period of 9 s under a contact pressure of up to 410 MPa, and the wear rate was only 1.19 × 10 −8 mm 3 ·N −1 ·m −1 . This is the shortest running-in time required to achieve superlubricity in Si 3 N 4 /glass (SiO 2 ). The results show that the strong hydrogen bonds between PEG and TA molecules can significantly reduce the time required for the tribochemical reaction, allowing the lubricating material to reach the state of superlubrication rapidly. Furthermore, the strong hydrogen bond can share a large load while fixing free water molecules in the contact zone to reduce shear interaction. These findings will help advance the use of liquid superlubricity technology in industrial and biomedical.

Abstract:In present work, a superlubricity phenomenon of phosphoric acid (H(3)PO(4)) was found under ambient conditions. An ultralow friction coefficient of about 0.004 between glass/Si(3)N(4) and sapphire/sapphire tribopairs was obtained under the lubrication of a phosphoric acid aqueous solution (pH 1.5) at high contact pressure (the maximum pressure can reach about 1.65 GPa) after a running-in period of about 600 s. The experimental results indicate that the superlow friction state was very stable for more than 3 h. In such a state, solidlike films formed on the two sliding surfaces, which are hydrates of phosphoric acid with a hydrogen-bonded network according to the Raman spectrum. The superlubricity mechanism is mainly attributed to the hydrogen bond effect that forms a hydrated water layer with low shearing strength, and the dipole-dipole effects that form an interfacial Coulomb repulsion force also make some contributions to low friction. This work may help us to introduce a new approach to superlubricity and may lead to the wide application of superlubricity in future technological and biomedical areas.

Abstract:In the present work, we show that the superlubricity can be achieved when the polyhydroxy alcohol solutions are mixed with acid solutions. The lowest friction coefficients between 0.003 and 0.006 are obtained on a traditional tribometer with a high pressure under the lubrication of these mixtures. Experimental results indicate that the superlubricity mechanism is in accordance with that under the lubrication of the mixture of glycerol and acid solutions in the study by Li et al. (Li, J. J.; :Zhang, C. H.; Ma, L. R.; Liu, Y. H.; Luo, J. B. Superlubricity achieved with mixtures of acids and glycerol. Langmuir 2013, 29, 271-275). It is also found that the superlubricity is closely dependent upon the concentration of polyhydroxy alcohol and the number of hydroxyl groups in the molecular structure of polyhydroxy alcohol. However, the number of carbon atoms and the arrangement of hydroxyl groups in the molecular structure almost have no effect on superlubricity.
Macroscale Superlubricity with Ultralow Wear and Ultrashort Running-In Period (∼1 s) through Phytic Acid-Based Complex Green Liquid Lubricants

Abstract:Liquid superlubricity has attracted much attention, due to its ability to significantly reduce friction on the macroscale. However, the severe wear caused by the long running-in period is still one of the bottlenecks restricting the practical application of liquid superlubricating materials. In this work, the obtained polyethylene glycol-phytic acid (PEG-PA) composite liquid lubricants showed outstanding superlubricating properties (μ ≈ 0.006) for Si3N4/glass friction pairs with an ultrashort running-in period (∼1 s) under high Hertzian contact pressure of ∼758 MPa. More importantly, even after up to 12 h (∼700 m of travel), only about 100 nm deep wear scars were found on the surface of the glass sheet (wear rate = 2.51× 10-9 mm3 N-1 m-1). From the molecular point of view, the water molecules anchored between the two friction pairs have extremely low shear force during the friction process, and the strong hydrogen bond interaction between PEG and PA greatly improves the bearing capacity of the lubricant. This work addresses the challenge of liquid superlubricant simultaneously exhibiting low shear force and high load-carrying capacity and makes it possible to obtain liquid superlubrication performance with an extremely short running-in time.

Abstract:In this work, the contact region between a Si3N4 ball and a SiO2 plate with the lubrication of phosphoric acid solution is observed directly by an optical microscope combined with a Raman microscope to understand the superlubricity mechanism. It is found that the wear on the friction surfaces mainly occurs at the beginning of the test and nearly disappears after the friction coefficient reduces to 0.05. When the superlubricity appears (mu = 0.004), there is only a limited amount of solution available to the contact (forming starvation state), resulting in an "H" distribution surrounding the contact region. Moreover, it is observed that the hydrogen bond effect in the solution is enhanced with time going by, and finally a thin film with hydrogen bond network among H3PO4, H2PO4-, and H2O is formed on the friction surfaces, leading to the superlubricity. By employing this direct observation approach, the structure of the confined solution and the superlubricity mechanism of phosphoric acid solution are finally investigated and discussed. Abstract:The step-by-step evolution of the friction coefficient and substrate damage during the superlubricity degeneration of Si3N4/glass pair lubricated with H3PO4 solution was investigated. The experimental results indicate that the degeneration process experiences two stages after superlubricity failure. The superlubricity state initially degenerates to the ordinary lubrication state, gradually destabilizes, and eventually fails. Further analysis demonstrates that superlubricity degeneration is mainly attributed to serious substrate damage; however, the subsequent lubrication failure is mainly caused by the insufficient amount of lubricant. Moreover, load, not speed, plays a pivotal role in the wear behavior of substrate surface and further affects the superlubricity stability. The results may reveal the degeneration mechanism of liquid superlubricity and optimize the operation and design of superlubricant systems.

Abstract:It has been recently demonstrated that the superlubricity behavior of polyalkylene glycol (PAG) aqueous solutions can be achieved in a wide variety of applied conditions. However, certain parameters are expected to be adjusted further to achieve a more controllable superlubricity system. Herein, it is demonstrated that an ultralow friction coefficient can be obtained by concentrated PAG aqueous solutions (80 wt% HB-260) as the contact pressure becomes relatively low (37 MPa). Meanwhile, the superlubricity state can be adjusted in a timely manner by adjusting the relative sliding speed. Here, the viscosity of the PAG aqueous solution (determined by its concentration and molecular weight) and applied conditions, including contact pressure and relative sliding speed, are considered as critical parameters influencing the lubricating performance. According to the theoretical analysis, the superlubricity state is confirmed and a fitted superlubricity region is proposed, which provides a comprehensive guide for achieving controllable superlubricity in the future.

Abstract:1.INTRODUCTION In the physical researches, friction phenomenon that describes the force existing between relative moving surfaces paves a great challenge to the industrial production and the energy efficiency. The friction reduction or elimination in the moving mechanical system would be extremely favorable to the industrial manufacture and the sustainable development of the earth. Therefore, the phenomenon “superlubricity” [1] that refers to friction coefficient less than 0.01 has become an appealing focus in recent years. Superlubricity has been attained both between solid interfaces and across liquid medium. The carbon based materials and two-dimensional materials, such as Molybdenum disulfide [2] and diamond like carbon film (DLC) [3] have been investigated mostly to achieve solid superlubricity. Different from the mechanism of solid superlubricity, the liquid superlubricity was mainly focused on the reduction of shear strength of confined liquid between two friction surfaces. On micro-level, Raviv et al. obtained a super-low friction of alkali salt solutions between mica surfaces by surface force apparatus (SFA) [4]. The liquid superlubricity above was mainly attributed to the hydration effect, leading to the great reduction of energy dissipation in the hydration layer [5]. At macro-scale, there are also some materials found having liquid superlubricity properties. Kato found that superlubricity can be achieved when water was confined between ceramics, where the formation of silica gel provided an efficient boundary lubrication [6]. Recently phosphoric acid solution was found to achieve superlubricity with a friction coefficient of 0.004 [7]. Compared with the solid superlubricity, the water-based superlubricity is more promising for industrial application, because of its nonsensitive to environment conditions. It is interesting and feasible to explore the water-based liquid superlubricity based on other mechanisms. In the present work, we investigated the friction properties of acid solution and a super-low friction coefficient of 0.004 was achieved between polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and sapphire without a running-in process. Here the friction properties were explored with different sliding velocity and pH value of the lubricant, and a further investigation on the mechanism through which superlubricity is obtained has been performed.
Extreme-Pressure Superlubricity of Polymer Solution Enhanced with Hydrated Salt Ions

Abstract:The development of new routes or materials to realize superlubricity under high contact pressure can result in energysaving and reduction of emissions. In this study, superlubricity (mu = 0.0017) under extreme pressure (717 MPa, more than twice the previously reported liquid superlubricity) between the frictional pair of Si3N4/sapphire was achieved by prerunning-in with a H3PO4 (HP) solution followed by lubrication with an aqueous solution consisting of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and sodium chloride (NaCl). Under the same test condition, the aqueous PVA lubricant did not show superlubricity. Results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy indicate the formation of a PVA-adsorbed film at the frictional interface after lubrication with PVA but not after lubrication with PVA/NaCl, indicating competitive adsorption between hydrated Na+ ions and PVA molecules. The hydrated Na- ions adsorbed preferentially to the solid surfaces, causing the transformation of the shear interface from a polymer film/polymer film to a solid/polymer film. Meanwhile, the hydrated Na+ ions also produced hydration repulsion force and induced low shear stress between the solid surfaces. Furthermore, NaCl increased the viscosity of the polymer lubricant, enhanced the hydrodynamic effect between interfaces, and decreased direct contact between the friction pair, causing a further reduction in friction. Thus, the superlubricity of the PVA/NaCl mixture is attributed to the combination of hydration and hydrodynamic effects. This study provides a novel route and mechanism for achieving extreme-pressure superlubricity at the macroscale, through the synergistic lubricating effect of hydrated ions and a polymer solution, propelling the industrial application of superlubricity.
Adjustable Superlubricity System Using Polyalkylene Glycol with Various Acid Aqueous Solutions

Abstract:Polyalkylene glycol (PAG) aqueous solutions have recently been demonstrated to exhibit an ultralow friction coefficient (COF, μ < 0.01). However, the prolonged running-in period and low bearing capacity have limited its widespread application. In this study, we determined that the running-in period can be decreased by more than 75% when the pH value of the lubricant is controlled at 3 by introducing various acid solutions. Additionally, less time was required to realize stable superlubricity with inorganic acid at lower pH values. This was mainly attributed to the acceleration effect of hydrogen ions around the contact region. In case of PAG aqueous solution with organic acid, the wear loss between sliding solid surfaces was reduced, and thus the bearing pressure during the superlubricity period was significantly improved from approximately 30 to 160 MPa. Furthermore, the organic acid molecules were considered to form strong hydrogen bonds with PAG macromolecules and solid surfaces. This in turn strengthened the structure of the adsorption layers. The unique effect of different acids in aqueous polymer lubrication can potentially significantly aid in advancing the study of polymer tribology and broadening industrial applications.

Abstract:In this study, ultralow friction coefficient (COF, mu < 0.01) was obtained through polyalkylene glycol (PAG) aqueous solutions with different molecular weights (MWs) ranging from 270 to 3930 g.mol(-1) under ambient conditions. With the increase in the MWs of PAG molecules, the threshold concentration to obtain this type of superlubric behavior gradually changed from 90 to 60 wt %. This phenomenon was closely related to the interaction between PAG chains and water molecules and the state of chemical binding In the superlubricity system, superior load-bearing Disk capacity was achieved at optimal threshold concentrations of all PAG aqueous solutions wherein multilayered adsorption layers that consisted of fully hydrated PAG molecules were formed on the sliding solid surfaces. With respect to the concentration below the threshold value, the existence of a shearing layer was indicated to play a significant role. Thus, the synergetic effect of sufficient adsorption of molecules and the unique shear rheology of the PAG aqueous solution were essential to achieve superlubricity.
Effects of Abrasive Particles on Liquid Superlubricity and Mechanisms for Their Removal

Abstract:Liquid superlubricity results in a near-frictionless lubrication state, which can greatly reduce friction and wear under aqueous conditions. However, during the running-in process, a large number of abrasive particles are generated, and because these may lead to a breakdown in superlubricity performance, they should be effectively removed. In this paper, the morphology, size, and composition of abrasive particles were verified using scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and their influence on liquid superlubricity was explored through friction tests. Subsequently, different solvents were used to remove the abrasive particles, and the optimal cleaning process was determined by macroscopic tribo-tests and microscopic analysis. Finally, droplet-spreading experiments and a force-curve analysis were carried out to understand the abrasive-particle removal mechanism by different solvents. We found that SiO2 was the main component in the abrasive particles, and micron-sized SiO2 particles resulted in random "wave peaks" in the coefficient of friction and, thus, the superlubricity. Absolute ethanol + ultrapure water was determined to be the optimal solvent for effectively removing abrasive particles from friction-pair surfaces and helped the lubricant in exhibiting an ultralow friction coefficient for long periods of time. We proposed a "wedge" and "wrap" model to explain the abrasive-particle removal mechanism of different solvents. The SiO2 removal mechanism outlined in this study can be applied under aqueous conditions to improve the stability and durability of liquid superlubricity in practical engineering applications.

Abstract:Friction behavior of aqueous solution at macroscale is quite different from that at nanoscale. At macroscale, tribochemistry usually occurs between lubricant and friction surfaces in the running-in process due to a high contact pressure, and most such processes can lead to friction reduction. In the present work, we reported that the hydrogen ions in aqueous solution played an important role in tribochemistry in running-in process (friction reducing process), which could result in the friction coefficient reducing from 0.4 to 0.04 between Si(3)N(4) and glass surfaces at macroscale. It is found that the running-in process and low friction state are closely dependent on the concentration of hydrogen ions in the contact region between the two friction surfaces. The lubrication mechanism is attributed to tribochemical reaction occurring between hydrogen ions and surfaces in the running-in process, which forms an electrical double layer and hydration layer to lower friction force. Finally, the running-in process of H(3)PO(4) (pH = 1.5) was investigated, which could realize superlubricity with an ultralow friction coefficient of about 0.004.

Abstract:Boric acid is a weak acid and has been used as a lubrication additive because of its special structure. In this study, we report that boric acid could achieve a robust superlubricity (mu < 0.01) as an additive in polyethylene glycol (PEG) aqueous solution at the Si3N4/SiO2 interfaces. The superlow and steady friction coefficient of approximately 0.004-0.006 could be achieved with boric acid under neutral conditions (pH of approximately 6.4), which is different from the acidic conditions leading to superlubricity. The influence of various factors, including boric acid concentration, sliding speed, applied load, PEG molecular weight, and the volume of lubricant on the superlubricity, were investigated. The results reveal that the PEG aqueous solution with the boric acid additive could achieve superlubricity under a wide range of conditions. The surface composition analysis shows that the synergy effect between boric acid and PEG provides sufficient H+ ions to realize the running-in process. Moreover, a composite tribochemical film composed of silica and ammonia-containing compounds were formed on the ball surface, contributing to the superlubricity. The film thickness calculation shows that superlubricity was achieved in a mixed lubrication region, and therefore, the superlubricity state was dominated by both the composite tribochemical film formed via the tribochemical reaction on the contact surfaces and the hydrodynamic lubricating film between the contact surfaces. Such a liquid superlubricity achieved under neutral conditions is of importance for both scientific understanding and engineering applications.
