Abstract:In this paper we describe some recent results on the geometry of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. We surveyed new and classical metrics on the moduli spaces of hyperbolic Riemann surfaces and their geometric properties. We then discussed the Mumford goodness and generalized goodness of various metrics on the moduli spaces and their deformation invariance. By combining with the dual Nakano negativity of the Weil-Petersson metric we derive various consequences such that the infinitesimal rigidity, the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and the log Chern number computations.

Riemannian Geometry to Higher Order in the Infinitesimals

Abstract:Differential geometry may be generalized to allow infinitesimals to any order. The purpose of the present contribution is to show that the theory so developed expands received geometrical ideas in an interesting way, rich in potential for future exploration. The first order of business is to furnish the notion of a higher tangent vector, as defined abstractly by means of commutative algebra, with a workable interpretation in terms of spatial intuition. Then we introduce the differential calculus of the so-called jet connection, viz., an extension of the usual affine connection that takes higher tangent vectors as its arguments -- thereby enabling us to give a sense to parallel transport in the direction of a higher tangent, what has (to our knowledge) never been entertained before. After generalizing the Riemannian metric tensor to include a dependence up to any order in the infinitesimals, we arrive at natural analogues of the Levi-Civita connection and the Riemannian curvature tensor which display novel phenomena rooted in interactions among infinitesimals differing in order. Finally on the integral side, an intrinsic theory of integration adapted to integrands possibly of higher than first order in the differentials is developed, with a view towards eventually defining an action functional that will be applicable in the general theory of relativity.

Global Riemannian geometry with its connections to topology, geometric group theory and geometric analysis remained an important focus of the conference. Special emphasis was given to Kähler manifolds, geometric flows and singular spaces of non-positive curvature.

Abstract:Shape analysis and compuational anatomy both make use of sophisticated tools from infinite-dimensional differential manifolds and Riemannian geometry on spaces of functions. While comprehensive references for the mathematical foundations exist, it is sometimes difficult to gain an overview how differential geometry and functional analysis interact in a given problem. This paper aims to provide a roadmap to the unitiated to the world of infinite-dimensional Riemannian manifolds, spaces of mappings and Sobolev metrics: all tools used in computational anatomy and shape analysis.

Abstract:Generalized Functions play a central role in the understanding of differential equations containing singularities and nonlinearities. Introducing infinitesimals and infinities to deal with these obstructions leads to controversies concerning the existence, rigor and the amount of non-standard analysis needed to understand these theories. Milieus constructed over the generalized reals sidestep them all. A Riemannian manifold M embeds discretely into a generalized manifold $M^*$ on which singularities vanish and products of nonlinearities make sense. Linking this to an already existing global theory provides an algebra embedding $\kappa :\hat{\cal{G}}(M)\longrightarrow {\cal{C}}^{\infty}(M^*,\widetilde{\mathbb{R}}_f)$. Generalized Space-Time is constructed and its possible effects on Classical Space-Time are examined.

Abstract:The present document is the draft of a book which presents an introduction to infinite-dimensional differential geometry beyond Banach manifolds. As is well known the usual calculus breaks down in this setting. Hence, we replace it by the more general Bastiani calculus which is built using directional derivatives. We then focus on two main areas of infinite-dimensional geometry: 1. infinite-dimensional Lie groups, and 2. weak Riemannian geometry. Both topics are developed and connected to manifolds of (smooth) mappings. These manifolds are studied in detail to construct important examples such as diffeomorphism groups, loop groups and Riemannian metrics for shape analysis. Manifolds of mappings are prime examples for surprising connections between finite and infinite-dimensional geometry. However, also pathologies occurring in infinite-dimensions will be highlighted in many examples. The geometric techniques developed will then be showcased in modern applications of geometry such as geometric hydrodynamics, higher geometry in the guise of Lie groupoids and rough path theory.

The principal result is that the exterior differentiation is uniquely determined geometrically, just as grad (ient), div (ergence) and rot (ation) are uniquely determined geometrically or physically in classical vector calculus. This infinitesimal characterization of exterior differentiation has been completely missing in orthodox differential geometry.

Unification of the Fundamental Forces in Higher-Order Riemannian Geometry

Abstract:In Part I of the present series of papers, we adumbrate our idea of Riemannian geometry to higher order in the infinitesimals and derive expressions for the appropriate generalizations of parallel transport and the Riemannian curvature tensor. In Part II, the implications of higher-order geometry for the general theory of relativity beyond Einstein are developed. In the present Part III, we expand on the framework of Part II so as to take up the problem of field-theoretical unification. Employing the form of the Einstein-Hilbert action to higher order as proposed in Part II, we show how in nearly flat space the higher-order terms give rise to a gauge theory of Yang-Mills type. At the 2-jet level, the electroweak force emerges after imposition of gauge fixing. In fact, the proposed form of the Einstein-Hilbert action permits us to say more: we argue that the equivalence principle results in a Proca term that brings about the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the standard model. Two empirical predictions support our reasoning: first, we obtain a theoretical value for the Weinberg angle and second, we find that -- without any adjustable parameters -- the implied value of Coulomb's constant agrees well with experiment. The final section examines the 3-jet level. The same mechanism that produces Glashow-Weinberg-Salam electroweak theory at the 2-jet level eventuates in a chromodynamical force having $SU(3)$ symmetry at the 3-jet level.

Abstract:A space curve in a Euclidean 3-space $\mathbb E^3$ is called a rectifying curve if its position vector field always lies in its rectifying plane. This notion of rectifying curves was introduced by the author in [Amer. Math. Monthly {\bf 110} (2003), no. 2, 147-152]. In this present article, we introduce and study the notion of rectifying submanifolds in Euclidean spaces. In particular, we prove that a Euclidean submanifold is rectifying if and only if the tangential component of its position vector field is a concurrent vector field. Moreover, rectifying submanifolds with arbitrary codimension are completely determined.
