Abstract:This new volume presents 15 papers treating discrete groups as they occur in areas such as algebra, analysis, geometry, number theory and topology. Most of the papers are surveys, and the volume is intended to help graduate students and researchers better understand the structures and applications of discrete subgroups of Lie groups and locally symmetric spaces. Discrete subgroups of Lie groups are foundational objects in modern mathematics and occur naturally in different subjects. This new volume presents 15 papers treating discrete groups as they occur in areas such as algebra, analysis, geometry, number theory, and topology. Most of the papers are surveys, and this volume is intended to help graduate students and researchers better understand the structures and applications of discrete subgroups of Lie groups and locally symmetric spaces.

Abstract:The 1950s belong to one of the most glorious decades for geometry and topology.A group of young mathematicians established a wealth of great theorems, made ground breaking discoveries, and created a new era in mathematics.These men leave their names in the history of mathematics.Hodge theory was just completed by Weyl and Kodaira in 1941.By exploiting the Chern characteristic classes introduced by Shiing-Shen Chern, Hirzebruch proved the signature theorem and the Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch theorem in algebraic geometry in 1956.The engineer-turn-mathematician Bott proved the periodicity theorem on homotopy groups.These results would soon inspire Atiyah and Singer to prove their index theorem.Serre calculated the homotopy groups of spheres in algebraic topology using Leray spectral sequence, wrote the famous GAGA in algebraic geometry using sheaf theory, and systematically introduced complex analysis to algebraic geometry.Kodaira proved his famous embedding theorem, and developed deformation theory of complex manifolds.Later, Milnor found the first exotic sphere in dimension 7 and Nash proved his isometric embedding theorem for Riemannian manifolds.These great results are like stars shining in the sky.On Amsterdam's 1954 International Congress of Mathematicians, Kodaira and Serre were awarded Fields medals.Both of their works merged complex analysis, differential geometry and algebraic geometry in a miraculous fashion.As Weyl said in his famous encomium: "You reached heights of which I never dreamt… It shows that the old gnarled tree of mathematics is still full of sap and life."On the very occasion, Eugenio Calabi, a 31-year-old Italian-American mathematician, wrote down his famous conjecture on a sheet of paper during his talk, "For any (1,1)-form R in the first Chern class of a compact Kähler manifold, there exists a unique Kähler metric whose Ricci form is equal to R." Abstract:I will discuss results of three different types in geometry and topology. (1) General vanishing and rigidity theorems of elliptic genera proved by using modular forms, Kac-Moody algebras and vertex operator algebras. (2) The computations of intersection numbers of the moduli spaces of flat connections on a Riemann surface by using heat kernels. (3) The mirror principle about counting curves in Calabi-Yau and general projective manifolds by using hypergeometric series.

Abstract:In this paper we briefly discuss some of our recent results in the study of moduli space of Riemann surfaces. It is naturally divided into two parts, one about the differential geometric aspect, another on the topological aspect of the moduli spaces. To understand the geometry of the moduli spaces we introduced new metrics, studied in detail all of the known classical complete metrics, especially the Kähler-Einstein metric. As a corollary we proved that the logarithmic cotangent bundle of the moduli space is strictly stable in the sense of Mumford. The topological results we obtained were motivated by conjectures from string theory. We will describe in this part our proofs by localization method of the Mariño-Vafa formula, its two partition analogue as well as the theory of topological vertex and the simple localization proofs of the ELSV formula and the Witten conjecture. The applications of these formulas in Gromov-Witten theory and string duality will also be mentioned.

Abstract:One of the most eminent of contemporary mathematicians, Shing-Tung Yau has received numerous honors, including the 1982 Fields Medal, considered the highest honor in mathematics, for his work in differential geometry. He is known also for his work in algebraic and Kahler geometry, general relativity, and string theory. His influence in the development and establishment of these areas of research has been great. These five volumes reproduce a comprehensive selection of his published mathematical papers of the years 1971 to 1991-a period of groundbreaking accomplishments in numerous disciplines including geometric analysis, Kahler geometry, and general relativity. The editors have organized the contents of this collection by subject area-metric geometry and minimal submanifolds; metric geometry and harmonic functions; eigenvalues and general relativity; and Kahler geometry. Also presented are expert commentaries on the subject matter, and personal reminiscences that shed light on the development of the ideas which appear in these papers.

Abstract:An introduction to the theory of orbifolds from a modern perspective, combining techniques from geometry, algebraic topology and algebraic geometry. One of the main motivations, and a major source of examples, is string theory, where orbifolds play an important role. The subject is first developed following the classical description analogous to manifold theory, after which the book branches out to include the useful description of orbifolds provided by groupoids, as well as many examples in the context of algebraic geometry. Classical invariants such as de Rham cohomology and bundle theory are developed, a careful study of orbifold morphisms is provided, and the topic of orbifold K-theory is covered. The heart of this book, however, is a detailed description of the Chen-Ruan cohomology, which introduces a product for orbifolds and has had significant impact. The final chapter includes explicit computations for a number of interesting examples.

Geometric flows from unified string theories

Abstract:A survey of new geometric flows motivated by string theories is provided. Their settings can range from complex geometry to almost-complex geometry to symplectic geometry. From the PDE viewpoint, many of them can be viewed as intermediate flows between the Ricci flow and the Kähler-Ricci flow, albeit often coupled to flows of additional fields. In particular, a survey is given of joint works of the author with Tristan Collins, Teng Fei, Bin Guo, Sebastien Picard, and Xiangwen Zhang.

Abstract:We define relative Gromov-Witten invariants and establish a general gluing theory of pseudo-holomorphic curves for symplectic cutting and contact surgery. Then, we use our general gluing theory to study the change of GW-invariants of Calabi-Yau 3-folds tranform under flops and extremal transitions. We prove a complete formula for the change of GW-invariants of any genus transform under flop and a general type I extremal transition. Other extremal transition will be handled in a subsequent paper.

Abstract:Publication of the Journal of Differential Geometry began in 1967, and for the past 40 years it has nourished, coming to be regarded as the leading journal on the subject.In 1980, C.-C. Hsiung asked me to be chief editor of the JDG. I was reluctant, for many obstacles presented themselves. However, many great geometers came to the support of the journal. Almost immediately after establishing a new editorial board, we were able to obtain the highly regarded works of Freedman, Donaldson, Schoen, Uhlenbeck, Witten, etc. The editors continue to be deeply grateful for the tremendous support lent by these authors and many others. The quality of the JDG is as strong as ever.(A few years ago, in fact, we found it necessary to increase the journal's size, that we might do justice to the depth and excellence of the submissions received.)

Abstract:A new field of discrete differential geometry is presently emerging on the border between differential and discrete geometry. Whereas classical differential geometry investigates smooth geometric shapes (such as surfaces), and discrete geometry studies geometric shapes with finite number of elements (such as polyhedra), the discrete differential geometry aims at the development of discrete equivalents of notions and methods of smooth surface theory. Current interest in this field derives not only from its importance in pure mathematics but also from its relevance for other fields like computer graphics. Recent progress in discrete differential geometry has lead, somewhat unexpectedly, to a better understanding of some fundamental structures lying in the basis of the classical differential geometry and of the theory of integrable systems. The goal of this book is to give a systematic presentation of current achievements in this field.
