Abstract:In this paper we describe some recent results on the geometry of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. We surveyed new and classical metrics on the moduli spaces of hyperbolic Riemann surfaces and their geometric properties. We then discussed the Mumford goodness and generalized goodness of various metrics on the moduli spaces and their deformation invariance. By combining with the dual Nakano negativity of the Weil-Petersson metric we derive various consequences such that the infinitesimal rigidity, the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and the log Chern number computations.

Abstract:In this paper we briefly discuss some of our recent results in the study of moduli space of Riemann surfaces. It is naturally divided into two parts, one about the differential geometric aspect, another on the topological aspect of the moduli spaces. To understand the geometry of the moduli spaces we introduced new metrics, studied in detail all of the known classical complete metrics, especially the Kähler-Einstein metric. As a corollary we proved that the logarithmic cotangent bundle of the moduli space is strictly stable in the sense of Mumford. The topological results we obtained were motivated by conjectures from string theory. We will describe in this part our proofs by localization method of the Mariño-Vafa formula, its two partition analogue as well as the theory of topological vertex and the simple localization proofs of the ELSV formula and the Witten conjecture. The applications of these formulas in Gromov-Witten theory and string duality will also be mentioned.

Abstract:This PhD dissertation is concerned with integral geometric inverse problems. The geodesic ray transform is an operator that encodes the line integrals of a function along geodesics. The dissertation establishes many conditions when such information determines a function uniquely and stably. A new numerical model for computed tomography imaging is created as a part of the dissertation. The introductory part of the dissertation contains an introduction to inverse problems and mathematical models associated to computed tomography. The main focus is in definitions of integral geometry problems, survey of the related literature, and introducing the main results of the dissertation. A list of important open problems in integral geometry is given. The four articles of the dissertation (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1705.10126" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1705.10126">arXiv:1705.10126</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1901.03525" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1901.03525">arXiv:1901.03525</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1906.05046" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1906.05046">arXiv:1906.05046</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1909.00495" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1909.00495">arXiv:1909.00495</a>) are now published in various journals and the content of the document has not been updated since November 11, 2019. These four articles are omitted from this document which contains only the introductory part. Extended abstracts are given in the document in English and Finnish.

A Unified Approach to Geometric Modifications of Gravity

Abstract:This thesis studies modified theories of gravity from a geometric viewpoint. We review the motivations for considering alternatives to General Relativity and cover the mathematical foundations of gravitational theories in Riemannian and non-Riemannian geometries. Then, starting from the decomposition of the Einstein-Hilbert action into bulk and boundary terms, we construct new modifications of General Relativity. These modifications break diffeomorphism invariance or local Lorentz invariance, allowing one to bypass Lovelock's theorem while remaining second-order and without introducing additional fields. In the metric-affine framework, we introduce a new Einstein-Cartan-type theory with propagating torsion. Important comparisons are made with the modified teleparallel theories, and we construct a unified framework encompassing all these theories. The equivalence between theories that break fundamental symmetries in the Riemannian setting and non-Riemannian theories of gravity is explored in detail. This leads to a dual interpretation of teleparallel gravity, one in terms of geometric quantities and the other in terms of non-covariant objects. We then study the cosmological applications of these modified theories, making use of dynamical systems techniques. One key result is that the modified Einstein-Cartan theories can drive inflation in the early universe, replacing the initial cosmological singularity of General Relativity. To conclude, we discuss the viability of these modifications and possible future directions, examining their significance and relevance to the broader field of gravitational physics.

Abstract:These notes give an introduction to the equivalence problem of sub-Riemannian manifolds. We first introduce preliminaries in terms of connections, frame bundles and sub-Riemannian geometry. Then we arrive to the main aim of these notes, which is to give the description of the canonical grading and connection existing on sub-Riemann manifolds with constant symbol. These structures are exactly what is needed in order to determine if two manifolds are isometric. We give three concrete examples, which are Engel (2,3,4)-manifolds, contact manifolds and Cartan (2,3,5)-manifolds. These notes are an edited version of a lecture series given at the \href{https://conference.math.muni.cz/srni/}{42nd Winter school: Geometry and Physics}, Snr\'i, Check Republic, mostly based on other earlier work. However, the work on Engel (2,3,4)-manifolds is original research, and illustrate the important special case were our model has the minimal set of isometries.

Abstract:Riemann-Cartan geometries are geometries that admit non-zero curvature and torsion tensors. These geometries have been investigated as geometric frameworks for potential theories in physics including quantum gravity theories and have many important differences when compared to Riemannian geometries. One notable difference, is the number of symmetries for a Riemann-Cartan geometry is potentially smaller than the number of Killing vector fields for the metric. In this paper, we will review the investigation of symmetries in Riemann-Cartan geometries and the mathematical tools used to determine geometries that admit a given group of symmetries. As an illustration, we present new results by determining all static spherically symmetric and all stationary spherically symmetric Riemann-Cartan geometries. Furthermore, we have determined the subclasses of spherically symmetric Riemann-Cartan geometries that admit a seven-dimensional group of symmetries.

Abstract:We are interested in the geometry of the group $\mathcal{D}_q(M)$ of diffeomorphisms preserving a contact form $\theta$ on a manifold $M$. We define a Riemannian metric on $\mathcal{D}_q(M)$, compute the corresponding geodesic equation, and show that solutions exist for all time and depend smoothly on initial conditions. In certain special cases (such as on the 3-sphere), the geodesic equation is a simplified version of the quasigeostrophic equation, so we obtain a new geodesic interpretation of this geophysical system. We also show that the genuine quasigeostrophic equation on $S^2$ can be obtained as an Euler-Arnold equation on a one-dimensional central extension of $T_{\id}\mathcal{D}_q(M)$, and that our global existence result extends to this case. If $E$ is the Reeb field of $\theta$ and $\mu$ is the volume form, assumed compatible in the sense that $\text{div} E=0$, we show that $\mathcal{D}_q(M)$ is a smooth submanifold of $\mathcal{D}_{E,\mu}(M)$, the space of diffeomorphisms preserving the vector field $E$ and the volume form $\mu$, in the sense of $H^s$ Sobolev completions. The latter manifold is related to symmetric motion of ideal fluids. We further prove that the corresponding geodesic equations and projections are $C^{\infty}$ objects in the Sobolev topology.
Riemannian Geometry to Higher Order in the Infinitesimals

Abstract:Differential geometry may be generalized to allow infinitesimals to any order. The purpose of the present contribution is to show that the theory so developed expands received geometrical ideas in an interesting way, rich in potential for future exploration. The first order of business is to furnish the notion of a higher tangent vector, as defined abstractly by means of commutative algebra, with a workable interpretation in terms of spatial intuition. Then we introduce the differential calculus of the so-called jet connection, viz., an extension of the usual affine connection that takes higher tangent vectors as its arguments -- thereby enabling us to give a sense to parallel transport in the direction of a higher tangent, what has (to our knowledge) never been entertained before. After generalizing the Riemannian metric tensor to include a dependence up to any order in the infinitesimals, we arrive at natural analogues of the Levi-Civita connection and the Riemannian curvature tensor which display novel phenomena rooted in interactions among infinitesimals differing in order. Finally on the integral side, an intrinsic theory of integration adapted to integrands possibly of higher than first order in the differentials is developed, with a view towards eventually defining an action functional that will be applicable in the general theory of relativity.

Abstract:This paper introduces the concept of Riemannian doubly warped product submersions as a natural generalization of Riemannian warped product submersions. We study some fundamental properties of such submersions and derived the conditions under which the Riemannian doubly warped product submersions has totally geodesic, totally umbilical, and minimal fibers. Furthermore, we analyze the curvature prop- erties associated with Riemannian doubly warped product submersions and establish the Einstein conditions. Some non-trivial examples are explored to demonstrate the existence of such submersions.

Abstract:It is shown how standard treatments of the change in a vector Δξi under parallel transport about a closed path in Riemannian spacetime lead to erroneous results if a complete circuit is made rather than just half a circuit followed by antisymmetrization. In fact a nonzero change in the vector is obtained upon returning to the initial point via the reversed path. The error in these treatments is shown to involve several aspects of the law of transplantation for a vector and the idea of path reversal in curved spaces.

Abstract:Given a Riemannian submersion $(M,g) \to (B,j)$ each of whose fiber is connected and totally geodesic, we consider a certain 1-parameter family of Riemannian metrics $(g_{t})_{t > 0}$ on $M$, which is called the canonical variation. We prove that if each fiber is Einstein and $(M,g)$ satisfies a certain condition about its Ricci curvature, then the $l$-th positive eigenvalue $\lambda_{l}(g_{t})$ of the Laplacian on $(M,g_{t})$ is bounded from below by a positive constant independent of $l$. This in particular implies that the scale-invariant quantity $\lambda_{1}(g_{t})\mbox{Vol}(M,g_{t})^{2/\mbox{dim}M}$ goes to $\infty$ with $t$. We consider many examples. In particular, we consider Riemannian submersions from compact rank one symmetric spaces and the twistor fibration of a quaternionic Kähler manifold of positive scalar curvature.
