Abstract:We consider the problem of deforming a one-parameter family of hypersurfaces immersed into closed Riemannian manifolds with positive curvature operator. The hypersurface in this family satisfies mean curvature flow while the ambient metric satisfying the normalized Ricci flow. We prove that if the initial background manifold is an approximation of a spherical space form and the initial hypersurface also satisfies a suitable pinching condition, then either the hypersurfaces shrink to a round point in finite time or converge to a totally geodesic sphere as the time tends to infinity.

Abstract:In this paper we study the geometry of first time singularities of the mean curvature flow. By the curvature pinching estimate of Huisken and Sinestrari, we prove that a mean curvature flow of hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space Rn+1 with positive mean curvature is K-noncollapsing, and a blow-up sequence converges locally smoothly along a subsequence to a smooth, convex blow-up solution. As a consequence we obtain a local Harnack inequality for the mean convex flow.

Abstract:Under the hypothesis of mean curvature flows of hypersurfaces, we prove that the limit of the smooth rescaling of the singularity is weakly convex. It is a generalization of the result due to G. Huisken and C. Sinestrari in [5]. These a-priori bounds are satisfied for mean convex hypersurfaces in locally symmetric Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvature.

Abstract:Recently, Pipoli and Sinestrari [Pipoli, G. and Sinestrari, C., Mean curvature flow of pinched submanifolds of ℝℙ n , Comm. Anal. Geom. , 25 , 2017, 799–846] initiated the study of convergence problem for the mean curvature flow of small codimension in the complex projective space ℝℙ m . The purpose of this paper is to develop the work due to Pipoli and Sinestrari, and verify a new convergence theorem for the mean curvature flow of arbitrary codimension in the complex projective space. Namely, the authors prove that if the initial submanifold in ℝℙ m satisfies a suitable pinching condition, then the mean curvature flow converges to a round point in finite time, or converges to a totally geodesic submanifold as t → ∞. Consequently, they obtain a differentiable sphere theorem for submanifolds in the complex projective space.

Abstract:Let M n be a smooth, compact manifold without boundary, and F 0: M n → R n+1 a smooth immersion which is convex. The one-parameter families F(·, t): M n × [0, T) → R n+1 of hypersurfaces M t n = F(·, t)(M n ) satisfy an initial value problem dt/dF(·, t) = −H k (·, t)ν(·, t), F(·, 0) = F 0(·), where H is the mean curvature and ν(·, t) is the outer unit normal at F(·, t), such that −H ν = $\overrightarrow H $ is the mean curvature vector, and k > 0 is a constant. This problem is called H k -flow. Such flow will develop singularities after finite time. According to the blow-up rate of the square norm of the second fundamental forms, the authors analyze the structure of the rescaled limit by classifying the singularities as two types, i.e., Type I and Type II. It is proved that for Type I singularity, the limiting hypersurface satisfies an elliptic equation; for Type II singularity, the limiting hypersurface must be a translating soliton.

Abstract:Mean curvature flow is the most natural evolution equation in extrinsic geometry, and shares many features with Hamilton's Ricci flow from intrinsic geometry. In this lecture series, I will provide an introduction to the mean curvature flow of surfaces, with a focus on the analysis of singularities. We will see that the surfaces evolve uniquely through neck singularities and nonuniquely through conical singularities. Studying these questions, we will also learn many general concepts and methods, such as monotonicity formulas, epsilon-regularity, weak solutions, and blowup analysis that are of great importance in the analysis of a wide range of partial differential equations. These lecture notes are from summer schools at UT Austin and CRM Montreal, and also contain a detailed discussion of open problems and conjectures.

Abstract:In this dissertation I discuss and investigate the analytic aspect of several elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations arising from Riemannian and complex geometry, including the generalized Ricci flow, Gaussian curvature flow of negative power, mean curvature flow of positive power, harmonic-Ricci flow, vector field flow, and also Mabuchi-Yau functionals and Donaldson equation over complex manifolds. The new ingredient of this thesis is the first introduction to the vector field flow, a joint work with Professor Kefeng Liu at UCLA, which may lead to a new way to prove Hopf conjectures, which state that any positively curved manifold of even dimension has positive Euler characteristic and S 2S2 does not admit any Riemannian metric of positive sectional curvature, and give affirmative answer to Yau's question on the existence of an effective S1-action on positively curved manifolds. Furthermore, our flow is naturally related to the Navier-Stokes equations.
Singularity Models for High Codimension Mean Curvature Flow in Riemannian Manifolds

Abstract:We study the mean curvature flow of smooth $n$-dimensional compact submanifolds with quadratic pinching in a Riemannian manifold $\mathcal{N}^{n+m}$. Our main focus is on the case of high codimension, $m\geq 2$. We establish a codimension estimate that shows in regions of high curvature, the submanifold becomes approximately codimension one in a quantifiable way. This estimate enables us to prove at a singular time of the flow, there exists a rescaling that converges to a smooth codimension-one limiting flow in Euclidean space. Under a cylindrical type pinching, this limiting flow is weakly convex and moves by translation. Our approach relies on the preservation of the quadratic pinching condition along the flow and a gradient estimate that controls the mean curvature in regions of high curvature. These estimates allow us to analyse the behaviour of the flow near singularities and establish the existence of the limiting flow.

Abstract:Intrinsic curvature flows can be used to design Riemannian metrics by prescribed curvatures. This chapter presents three discrete curvature flow methods that are recently introduced into the engineering fields: the discrete Ricci flow and discrete Yamabe flow for surfaces with various topology, and the discrete curvature flow for hyperbolic 3-manifolds with boundaries. For each flow, we introduce its theories in both the smooth setting and the discrete setting, plus the numerical algorithms to compute it. We also provide a brief survey on their history and their link to some of the engineering applications in computer graphics, computer vision, medical imaging, computer aided design and others.

Abstract:This project serves to analyze the behavior of Ricci Flow in five dimensional manifolds. Ricci Flow was introduced by Richard Hamilton in 1982 and was an essential tool in proving the Geometrization and Poincare Conjectures. In general, Ricci Flow is a nonlinear PDE whose solutions are rather difficult to calculate; however, in a homogeneous manifold, the Ricci Flow reduces to an ODE. The behavior of Ricci Flow in two, three, and four dimensional homogenous manifolds has been calculated and is well understood. The work presented here will describe efforts to better understand the behavior of Ricci Flow in a certain class of five dimensional homogeneous manifolds.

Abstract: We investigate the convergence of the mean curvature flow of arbitrary codimension in Riemannian manifolds with bounded geometry. We prove that if the initial submanifold satisfies a pinching condition, then along the mean curvature flow the submanifold contracts smoothly to a round point in finite time. As a consequence we obtain a differentiable sphere theorem for submanifolds in a Riemannian manifold.

Abstract:This paper gives some examples of hypersurfaces phi(t)(M-n) evolving in time with speed determined by functions of the normal curvatures in an (n + 1)-dimensional hyperbolic manifold; we emphasize the case of flow by harmonic mean curvature. The examples converge to a totally geodesic submanifold of any dimension from 1 to n, and include cases which exist for infinite time. Convergence to a point was studied by Andrews, and only occurs in finite time. For dimension n = 2, the destiny of any harmonic mean curvature flow is strongly influenced by the genus of the surface M-2.

This new nonlinear geometric evolution equation was recently introduced by the first two authors motivated by Einstein equation and Hamilton's Ricci flow. We prove that, for any given initial metric on ${\mathbb{R}}^{2}$ in certain class of metrics, one can always choose suitable initial velocity symmetric tensor such that the solution exists for all time, and the scalar curvature corresponding to the solution metric $g_{ij}$ keeps uniformly bounded for all time. If the initial velocity tensor does not satisfy the condition, then the solution blows up at a finite time, and the scalar curvature $R(t,x)$ goes to positive infinity as $(t,x)$ tends to the blowup points, and a flow with surgery has to be considered. The authors attempt to show that, comparing to Ricci flow, the hyperbolic geometric flow has the following advantage: the surgery technique may be replaced by choosing suitable initial velocity tensor. Some geometric properties of hyperbolic geometric flow on general open and closed Riemann surfaces are also discussed.

Abstract:Every surface in the three dimensional Euclidean space have a canonical Riemannian metric, which induces constant Gaussian curvature and is conformal to the original metric. Discrete curvature flow is a feasible way to compute such canonical metrics. Similarly, three dimensional manifolds also admit canonical metrics, which induce constant sectional curvature. Canonical metrics on 3manifolds are valuable for the study of 3D topology and have the potential for volumetric parameterization and shape matching. This paper generalizes discrete curvature flow from surfaces to hyperbolic 3manifolds with complete geodesic boundaries. The metric deforms according to the curvature, until the curvature is constant everywhere. The theoretical results are introduced, the algorithm is explained in details, and thorough experiments are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of discrete 3-manifold curvature flow.

Gap Theorem on Riemannian manifolds using Ricci flow

Abstract:In this work, we use the Ricci flow approach to study the gap phenomenon of Riemannian manifolds with non-negative curvature and sub-critical scaling invariant curvature decay. The first main result is a quantitative Ricci flow existence theory without non-collapsing assumption. We use it to show that complete non-compact manifolds with non-negative complex sectional curvature and sufficiently small average curvature decay are necessarily flat. The second main result concerns three-manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature of quadratic decay. By combining our newly established curvature estimate and method in Kähler geometry, we show that if the curvature decays slightly faster even in average sense, the manifold must be flat. This strengthens a result of Reiris. In the compact case, we use the Ricci flow regularization to generalize the celebrated Gromov-Ruh Theorem in this direction.

Abstract:Michor and Mumford showed that the mean curvature flow is a gradient flow on a Riemannian structure with a degenerate geodesic distance. It is also known to destroy the uniform density of gridpoints on the evolving surfaces. We introduce a related geometric flow which is free of these drawbacks. Our flow can be viewed as a formal gradient flow on a certain submanifold of the Wasserstein space of probability measures endowed with Otto's Riemannian structure. We obtain a number of analytic results concerning well-posedness and long-time stability which are however restricted to the 1D case of evolution of loops.

Abstract:We present variational approximations of boundary value problems for curvature flow (curve shortening flow) and elastic flow (curve straightening flow) in two-dimensional Riemannian manifolds that are conformally flat. For the evolving open curves we propose natural boundary conditions that respect the appropriate gradient flow structure. Based on suitable weak formulations we introduce finite element approximations using piecewise linear elements. For some of the schemes a stability result can be shown. The derived schemes can be employed in very different contexts. For example, we apply the schemes to the Angenent metric in order to numerically compute rotationally symmetric self-shrinkers for the mean curvature flow. Furthermore, we utilise the schemes to compute geodesics that are relevant for optimal interface profiles in multi-component phase field models.
