Abstract:A facile synthesis method of palladium phosphide supported on the activated carbon was developed. The effects of Pd precursors for phosphatization, phosphatization temperature, and the ratio of hypophosphite/Pd on the generation of palladium phosphide were investigated, and a generation mechanism of the Pd3P crystal structure is proposed. The results demonstrate that only PdO, rather than Pd or PdCl2, can transform into Pd phosphide without damage to the activated carbon. The penetration of P into the Pd particle can dramatically improve the dispersion of Pd species particles on the activated carbon. The generation of Pd phosphide greatly depends on the phosphatization temperature and the ratio of hypophosphite/Pd. An intact Pd3P crystal structure was obtained when the ratio of hypophosphite/Pd reached 32 and the phosphatization temperature was above 400 °C. The Pd3P supported on the activated carbon exhibited superior catalytic performance in terms of the hydrogenation of halonitrobenzenes to haloanilines because it had few L acids and B acids sites and could not generate deficient-electron active hydrogen atoms as electrophiles.

Abstract:Heteroatom-doping of carbon materials has gained much attention recent decades since it was believed to be a brilliant strategy to endow carbon with enhanced physical and chemical properties. In addition, the doped carbon has been frequently employed in various fields such as supercapacitors, batteries, catalytic hydrogenation reactions due to its unique structure and superior features, among which selective hydrogenation is an essential procedure during organic synthesis and has wide industrial applications. It is proved that the incorporation of heteroatoms could have a great effect on the original carbon, such as charge distribution and surface defects, which could further influence the electronic effect and physical interaction between carbon carrier and supported metal, thereby enhance its catalytic performance in hydrogenation reactions. Herein, we briefly reviewed recent progress in the effect of heteroatoms on carbon properties. Meanwhile, the synthesis strategies of doped-carbon and the application of these catalysts in series of hydrogenation reactions were also summarized.

Abstract:Hydrogen energy has the merits of high energy value and zero carbon emissions, but its practical application is hindered by the intensive energy input required for dehydrogenation of liquid hydrocarbons (170-300 degrees C). Herein, toward highly efficient dehydrogenation of saturated N-heterocycles, assembly of PdO on carbon vacancy-abundant carbon nitride skeleton derived from in situ Zr-doping was demonstrated to improve catalyst with superior performance under mild conditions. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed that the Zr-doped carbon nitride (Zr-C3N4) support showed a higher number of lone pair electrons and faster electron transfer rate compared with the parent. Strong interaction between PdO and the C3N4 skeleton was proved by the hydrogenation temperature-programmed reduction (H-2-TPR) and XPS. By efficiently turning the electronic properties of PdO by Zr-C3N4, in which the affinity influences the strength of the metal-support interactions and therefore PdO dispersion, the as-prepared prototype catalyst PdO/Zr-C3N4 was capable of achieving complete dehydrogenation of a series of saturated N-heterocycles at only 140 degrees C within 8 h, supassing the performance rendered by most of the catalytic systems reported so far. This work offers a promising pathway for energy-efficient and cost-effective hydrogen energy utilization under practical conditions.

Abstract:Sulfur-modified carbon support can effectively modulate the performance of the metal catalyst. Here we prepared a sulfur-doped mesoporous carbon material (CSx) through carbonization of poly(sodium p-styrenesulfonate or p-styrenesulfonate co-maleate), which was supported with Pd and employed for the selective hydrogenation of o-chloro-nitrobenzene (o-CNB) to o-chloro-aniline (o-CAN). Such catalyst shows almost 100% selectivity of o-CAN at 100% o-CNB conversion (performed In a batch reactor: t = 210 min, No-CNB/m(cat) = 0.63 mol/g(cat)). The stability (recyclability) study of the optimal catalyst shows that the catalyst can be reused for at least six times without decreasing the selectivity (100% conversion can be achieved with slightly prolonged reaction time). We suggest that the electronic effect between the S and Pd, which reduces the hydrogen adsorption and dissociation ability of Pd, to be responsible for the excellent selectivity, and the formation of C-S covalent bond to be responsible for the good stability.

Abstract:Tandem catalysis, often inspired by biological systems, offers many advantages in the synthesis of highly functionalized small molecules. NH2-grafted porous C3N4 nanosheet with rich N species and surface area of 138 m(2)/g was fabricated via a NH3-exfoliation method. After supporting Pd nanoparticles, the resulting bifunctional catalyst (Pd/C3N4-NH2) could catalyze a one-step tandem condensation-hydrogenation reaction between ketones and nitriles to form alpha-alkylated nitriles at room temperature. Under 2 MPa H-2 for 8 h, Pd/C3N4-NH2 could afford 99.7% cyclohexanone conversion and 99.8% selectivity without other side reactions, which is much higher than that of bulk C3N4-supported Pd. Compared with commonly used two-step processes, this one-step tandem reaction could largely shorten reaction time and allow condensation-hydrogenation to take place at room temperature. We also found that the hydrogenation step accelerated the condensation step, which increased the overall efficiency of the tandem transformation. This catalytic system demonstrates the design of a bifunctional catalyst with cooperative sites that allow the tandem reaction to take place in one step under mild conditions.

Abstract:Cyclohexanone is an important intermediate in the manufacture of polyamides in chemical industry, but direct selective hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanone under mild conditions is a challenge. We report here a catalyst made of Pd nanoparticles supported on a mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride, Pd@mpg-C3N4, which was shown to be highly active and promoted the selective formation of cyclohexanone under atmospheric pressure of hydrogen in aqueous media without additives. Conversion of 99% and a selectivity higher than 99% were achieved within 2 h at 65 degrees C. The reaction can be accelerated at higher temperature, but even at room temperature, 99% conversion and 96% selectivity could still be obtained. The generality of the Pd@mpg-C3N4 catalyst for this reaction was demonstrated by selective hydrogenation of other hydroxylated aromatic compounds with similar performance.

Highly Selective Hydrogenation of Phenols to Cyclohexanone Derivatives Using a Palladium@N-Doped Carbon/SiO 2 Catalyst

Abstract:A new palladium-based heterogeneous material was synthesized by means of immobilization of Pd(OAc)2/1,10-phenanthroline on commercially available SiO2 and subsequent pyrolysis at 600 °C for 2 h in air, namely, a Pd@N-doped carbon/SiO2 catalyst. The obtained catalyst was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques, and was effectively applied in the highly selective hydrogenation of phenols to give the corresponding cyclohexanone derivatives with 93–98% yields at 100 °C under 0.4 MPa H2 in EtOH. It was demonstrated that introducing nitrogen could effectively promote the Pd dispersion and enhance the electronic interaction of Pd, both of which facilitate the improvement of the catalytic activity and selectivity. The likely reaction pathway was outlined to elucidate the selective hydrogenation mechanism according to experimental results.

Abstract:Pd-based catalysts have been widely applied in hydrogenation reactions for production of both bulk and fine chemicals; however, selective and efficient hydrogenation of substrates with multiple functional groups is challenging. Here, we synthesize the C-doped Pd NPs confined in the hollow-structured carbons with a closed shell (C-Pd@HCS), a single hole in the shell (C-Pd@HCH), and a bowl-like shell (C-Pd@HCB). Based on the three comparative samples, void-confinement effects in phenol hydrogenation are investigated. It is found that the reaction rate of phenol hydrogenation is always decelerated gradually in the order of C-Pd@HCS > C-Pd@HCH > C-Pd@HCB, regardless of what reaction conditions are applied. The highest rate over C-Pd@HCS should be related to the void-confinement effect induced by its closed space. Moreover, the selectivity toward cyclohexanone over C-Pd@HCS/HCH/HCB is always higher than 95% due to the C-doped Pd NPs (hindering the Pd β-hydride formation and disfavoring the cyclohexanone adsorption as revealed by experimental and theoretical results).

Electron-deficient Pd Nanoparticles on Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanofibers for High Selectivity Alkyne Transfer Semi-Hydrogenation

Abstract:Improving the alkyne hydrogenation activity and selectivity of Pd catalysts is of great significance through structural design and surface electron regulation. In this study, an electron-deficient Pd nanoparticles on mesoporous nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers was produced through a ZIF-8 template assisted electrospinning method, which exhibited highly selectivity for transfer hydrogenation of phenylacetylene (PA) by using aminoborane (AB) as the hydrogen source. The porous carbon nanofiber carriers not only facilitate the uniform dispersion and anchoring of Pd nanoparticles but also provide confined space that promotes the transfer hydrogenation. The electron-deficient Pd nanoparticles decreases the desorption energy of styrene (ST), enhancing its dissociation from the reaction site and improving the selectivity of ST. It achieved 98% ST selectivity at nearly 100% PA conversion and maintain high selectivity above 96% over prolonged reaction time and at high AB/PA feed ratio. Moreover, the carbon nanofibers substrate allows for convenient and complete recovery from the reaction system without significant decrease in conversion and selectivity, indicating its excellent structural and performance stability. It also exhibited high selectivity (>93%) in the semi-hydrogenation of various other aromatic alkynes. This work provides a valuable reference for designing high efficiency transfer semi-hydrogenation catalysts.

Ultrafine PdCo bimetallic nanoclusters confined in N-doped porous carbon for the efficient semi-hydrogenation of alkynes

Abstract:Semi-hydrogenation of alkynes to prepare alkenes is an important reaction in the petrochemical and fine chemical industries. The use of conventional Pd nanoparticle-based catalysts is limited by alkyne over-hydrogenation and low Pd utilization. In this study, a nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon material (m-NC), which was rich in defect sites after Zn volatilization, was fabricated by the carbonization of ZIF-8. Ultrafine PdCo bimetallic nanoclusters with Co atom-modified Pd active site electronic and compositional structure were highly dispersed and confined in m-NC. As-obtained Pd0.43Co1/m-NC was used for the semi-hydrogenation of alkynes and it exhibited high selectivity with high conversion under mild reaction conditions. Pd0.43Co1/m-NC also exhibited excellent stability in leaching tests and maintained its catalytic activity for at least nine reaction cycles. The highly dispersed active sites in Pd0.43Co1/m-NC served as the active sites for the catalytic semi-hydrogenation of alkynes; as a regulator, the second metal Co effectively improved selectivity, and m-NC endowed the catalyst with excellent stability. The research work presented here may provide a foundation for the design of highly active, selective, and stable Pd-based bimetallic catalysts for selective hydrogenation.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenation of alkynes to obtain alkenes is a key reaction in petrochemical and fine chemical industries. However, the development of stable and highly selective catalysts with uniformly dispersed active sites is still immensely challenging for the semi-hydrogenation of alkynes. In this study, N-doped porous carbon nanospheres (NPCNs) were synthesized by the nanoemulsion self-assembly and subsequently carbonization method. Ultrafine PdCu bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) were uniformly dispersed and immobilized on NPCNs. The obtained PdCu/NPCNs catalyst exhibited an open framework and abundant active sites originating from ultrafine PdCu NPs. In the semi-hydrogenation of alkynes, the PdCu/NPCNs catalyst exhibited a remarkable performance and stability, outperforming most of the classical catalysts. The excellent performance was related to the introduction of a secondary metal Cu, which can regulate the electronic state of Pd active sites to further enhance the hydrogenation activity and selectivity. Hence, the facile approach reported herein may be useful for constructing highly dispersed bimetallic NP-based catalysts for selective hydrogenation of alkynes in the petrochemical industry.

Abstract:Palladium is a key catalyst invaluable to many industrial processes and fine-chemical synthesis. Although recent progress has allowed the synthesis of Pd nanoparticles with various shapes by using different techniques, the facile synthesis of Pd nanocrystals and turning them into a highly active, selective, and stable catalyst systems still remain challenging. Herein, we report the highly selective one-pot synthesis of monodisperse Pd cluster nanowires in aqueous solution; these consist of interconnected nanoparticles and may serve as highly active catalysts because of the enrichment of high index facets on the surface, including {443}, {331}, and {221} steps. For the first time, carbon nanotube and ?-Al2O3 immobilized Pd cluster nanowires showed highly enhanced catalytic performance in the liquid-phase selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde and gas-phase hydrogenation of 1,3butadiene relative to immobilized Pd icosahedra and nanocubes, as well as commercial Pd catalysts.

Abstract:Hierarchical bottom-up self-assembly of nano particles by wet chemistry methods is a promising approach to the preparation of engineered metal-ligand networks with advanced catalytic properties. Here, we developed a facile strategy to synthesize self-organized metal-ligand Pd(0) - [CpPd(II)Cl](2) nanoreactor through a redox and in situ transmetalation reaction between palladium ions and titanium ions. The obtained integrated metallic Pd(0) nanoparticles with organic [CpPd(II)Cl](2) capping ligands have been systematically characterized. The self-assemblies can not only serve as a support providing physical barriers against aggregation of ultrasmall Pd nanoparticles with good stability while keeping Pd nanoparticle core highly accessible but can also act as an efficient bifunctional nanoreactor for the first realization of selective hydrogenation and acid-free acetalization cascade reaction. Because of the combination of the two functions of metallic Pd(0) nanoparticles and Lewis acid Pd(II) ions in the [CpPd(II)Cl](2) ligands, the obtained integrated Pd(0)-[CpPd(II)Cl](2) nanoreactor exhibits excellent hydrogenation selectivity and activity (up to 66%-98% yield) in the synthesis of the acetal derivatives from broad substrates of alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes and alcohols under mild conditions. Our work has successfully engineered a metal-ligand ensemble to obtain an attractive bifunctional heterogeneous catalyst for cascade organic transformations, presenting a significant step toward the attainment of green and sustainable chemical reactions.
Tuning hydrogenation chemistry of Pd-based heterogeneous catalysts by introducing homogeneous-like ligands

Abstract:Noble metals have been extensively employed in a variety of hydrotreating catalyst systems for their featured functionality of hydrogen activation but may also bring side reactions such as undesired deep hydrogenation. It is crucial to develop a viable approach to selectively inhibit side reactions while preserving beneficial functionalities. Herein, we present modifying Pd with alkenyl-type ligands that forms homogeneous-like Pd-alkene metallacycle structure on the heterogeneous Pd catalyst to achieve the selective hydrogenolysis and hydrogenation. Particularly, a doped alkenyl-type carbon ligand on Pd-Fe catalyst is demonstrated to donate electrons to Pd, creating an electron-rich environment that elongates the distance and weakens the electronic interaction between Pd and unsaturated C of the reactants/products to control the hydrogenation chemistry. Moreover, high H2 activation capability is maintained over Pd and the activated H is transferred to Fe to facilitate C-O bond cleavage or directly participate in the reaction on Pd. The modified Pd-Fe catalyst displays comparable C-O bond cleavage rate but much higher selectivity (>90%) than the bare Pd-Fe (<50%) in hydrotreating of diphenyl ether (DPE, modelling the strongest C-O linkage in lignin) and enhanced ethene selectivity (>90%) in acetylene hydrogenation. This work sheds light on the controlled synthesis of selective hydrotreating catalysts via mimicking homogeneous analogues.
