Abstract:Selective hydrogenation of alkynes to obtain alkenes is a key reaction in petrochemical and fine chemical industries. However, the development of stable and highly selective catalysts with uniformly dispersed active sites is still immensely challenging for the semi-hydrogenation of alkynes. In this study, N-doped porous carbon nanospheres (NPCNs) were synthesized by the nanoemulsion self-assembly and subsequently carbonization method. Ultrafine PdCu bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) were uniformly dispersed and immobilized on NPCNs. The obtained PdCu/NPCNs catalyst exhibited an open framework and abundant active sites originating from ultrafine PdCu NPs. In the semi-hydrogenation of alkynes, the PdCu/NPCNs catalyst exhibited a remarkable performance and stability, outperforming most of the classical catalysts. The excellent performance was related to the introduction of a secondary metal Cu, which can regulate the electronic state of Pd active sites to further enhance the hydrogenation activity and selectivity. Hence, the facile approach reported herein may be useful for constructing highly dispersed bimetallic NP-based catalysts for selective hydrogenation of alkynes in the petrochemical industry.

Abstract:The selective hydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes is widely applied in the chemical industry; nevertheless, achieving highly selective hydrogenation with high catalytic activity is considerably challenging. Herein, ultrafine PdCu bimetallic nanoparticles encapsulated by high-surface-area mesoporous α-Al 2 O 3 were prepared by high-temperature calcination–reduction using a porous organic framework (POF) as the template. As-obtained PdCu@α-Al 2 O 3 exhibited a high selectivity of 95% for the semi-hydrogenation of phenylacetylene as a probe reaction under mild reaction conditions. The separation of continuous Pd atoms and modification of the Pd electronic state by Cu atoms suppressed β-hydride formation and alkene adsorption, contributing to high selectivity for the catalytic hydrogenation of alkynes. The catalytic activity was maintained after 7 cycles due to the strong interaction between the PdCu bimetallic nanoparticles and α-Al 2 O 3 as well as the encapsulation effect of mesoporous α-Al 2 O 3 . Thus, the current work provides a facile strategy for fabricating high-surface-area mesoporous α-Al 2 O 3 -supported catalysts for industrial catalysis applications.

Abstract:Transition metal-catalyzed semi-hydrogenation of alkynes has become one of the most popular methods for alkene synthesis. Specifically, the noble metal Pd, Rh, and Ru-based heterogeneous catalysts have been widely studied and utilized in both academia and industry. But the supported noble metal catalysts are generally suffering from leaching or aggregation during harsh reaction conditions, which resulting low catalytic reactivity and stability. Herein, we reported the facile synthesis of nitrogen doped graphene encapsulated Pd catalyst and its application in the chemo-selective semi-hydrogenation of alkynes. The graphene layer served as "bulletproof" over the active Pd Nano metal species, which was confirmed by Xray and TEM analysis, enhanced the catalytic stability during the reaction conditions. The optimized prepared Pd@N/C catalyst showed excellent efficiency in semi-hydrogenation of phenylacetylene and other types of alkynes with un-functionalized or functionalized substituents, including the hydrogenation sensitive functional groups (NO2, ester, and halogen). Abstract:Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) have garnered considerable attention and have undergone extensive studies owing to their high hydrogen storage density and ease of storage and transportation. Research has shown that carbon-supported bimetallic alloys exhibit exceptional performance as catalysts for low-temperature dehydrogenation. Nevertheless, developing high-efficiency carbon support catalysts and revealing the interaction between active metals and support remains challenging but significant. In this work, a cost-effective metal-modified activated carbon (AC) was synthesized and loaded with PdCoO active sites for low-temperature dehydrogenation of dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole (12H-NECZ) to produce hydrogen. The results show that: (1) Introducing tin (Sn) into the AC support to form highly dispersed PdCoO/Sn2-C improves the pore distribution and size of the catalyst, promoting the dispersion of active metals on the surface; (2) The interface effect between PdCoOx and Sn-C supports effectively regulates the electron transfer inside the catalyst, enhances the synergistic effect between metals, and reduces electron transfer resistance, thereby improving dehydrogenation catalytic activity. The results show that at 140 °C, 12H-NECZ was completely dehydrogenated after 8 h, with a selectivity of 92.5%, while the palladium loading was only 2.2 wt%. This study provides a suitable method for the targeted design of catalysts by altering the electronic effects of supports.

Abstract:AIM To find the cephalometric norms for Palestinian population according to Steiner cephalometric analysis. METHODS Lateral cephalograms of 76 dental students (51 females and 25 males, mean age 20.4 ± 2.1 years) were collected from their files at the American University in Jenin, Palestine. They were scanned and analyzed following Steiner measurements. Means and standard deviations for all variables were calculated. Differences between the mean of the variables for both sexes were calculated using the independent t test. RESULTS Females had a smaller interincisal angle, more proclined mandibular incisors, and a shorter anterior cranial base than males in the Palestinian population. CONCLUSION When the Palestinian sample population was compared to Steiner norms, similar skeletal patterns were found, but the anterior teeth were more proclined and protruded.

Abstract:Improving the alkyne hydrogenation activity and selectivity of Pd catalysts is of great significance through structural design and surface electron regulation. In this study, an electron-deficient Pd nanoparticles on mesoporous nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers was produced through a ZIF-8 template assisted electrospinning method, which exhibited highly selectivity for transfer hydrogenation of phenylacetylene (PA) by using aminoborane (AB) as the hydrogen source. The porous carbon nanofiber carriers not only facilitate the uniform dispersion and anchoring of Pd nanoparticles but also provide confined space that promotes the transfer hydrogenation. The electron-deficient Pd nanoparticles decreases the desorption energy of styrene (ST), enhancing its dissociation from the reaction site and improving the selectivity of ST. It achieved 98% ST selectivity at nearly 100% PA conversion and maintain high selectivity above 96% over prolonged reaction time and at high AB/PA feed ratio. Moreover, the carbon nanofibers substrate allows for convenient and complete recovery from the reaction system without significant decrease in conversion and selectivity, indicating its excellent structural and performance stability. It also exhibited high selectivity (>93%) in the semi-hydrogenation of various other aromatic alkynes. This work provides a valuable reference for designing high efficiency transfer semi-hydrogenation catalysts.

Abstract:A series of PdNi/SiO2 bimetallic nanoparticles were synthesized using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and 2,6-bis(5,6-dimethyl-1,2,4-triazine-3-yl) pyridine (BTP) as ligands through sol-gel method. BTP was proved to be an effective ligand that can delay the reduction of palladium (II), which helps the formation of palladium-rich shell bimetallic nanoparticles. Pd3Ni7-BTP/SiO2 exhibited the best catalytic performance (TOF=180h−1) among all the catalysts for hydrogenation of nitrobenzene under ambient conditions and was successfully reused for at least five times without loss in activity. The excellent catalytic performance could be ascribed to the small nanoparticle size (2.14nm) and the palladium-rich shell structure it bears.

Abstract:The selective hydrogenation of alkynes is an important reaction; however, the catalytic activity and selectivity in this reaction are generally conflicting. In this study, ultrafine Pd nanoparticles (NPs) loaded on a graphite-like C3N4 structure with nitrogen defects (Pd/DCN) are synthesized. The resulting Pd/DCN exhibits excellent photocatalytic performance in the transfer hydrogenation of alkynes with ammonia borane. The reaction rate and selectivity of Pd/DCN are superior to those of Pd/BCN (bulk C3N4 without nitrogen defects) under visible-light irradiation. The characterization results and density functional theory calculations show that the Mott-Schottky effect in Pd/DCN can change the electronic density of the Pd NPs, and thus enhances the hydrogenation selectivity toward phenylacetylene. After 1 h, the hydrogenation selectivity of Pd/DCN reaches 95%, surpassing that of Pd/BCN (83%). Meanwhile, nitrogen defects in the supports improve the visible-light response and accelerate the transfer and separation of photogenerated charges to enhance the catalytic activity of Pd/DCN. Therefore, Pd/DCN exhibits higher efficiency under visible light, with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 2002 min(-1). This TOF is five times that of Pd/DCN under dark conditions and 1.5 times that of Pd/BCN. This study provides new insights into the rational design of high-performance photocatalytic transfer hydrogenation catalysts.
Encapsulation of Palladium Carbide Subnanometric Species in Zeolite Boosts Highly Selective Semihydrogenation of Alkynes

Abstract:The selective hydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes is a crucial step in the synthesis of fine chemicals. However, the widely utilized palladium (Pd)-based catalysts often suffer from poor selectivity. In this work, we demonstrate a carbonization-reduction method to create palladium carbide subnanometric species within pure silicate MFI zeolite. The carbon species can modify the electronic and steric characteristics of Pd species by forming the predominant Pd-C4 structure and, meanwhile, facilitate the desorption of alkenes by forming the Si-O-C structure with zeolite framework, as validated by the state-of-the-art characterizations and theoretical calculations. The developed catalyst shows superior performance in the selective hydrogenation of alkynes over mild conditions (298 K, 2 bar H2 ), with 99 % selectivity to styrene at a complete conversion of phenylacetylene. In contrast, the zeolite-encapsulated carbon-free Pd catalyst and the commercial Lindlar catalyst show only 15 % and 14 % selectivity to styrene, respectively, under identical reaction conditions. The zeolite-confined Pd-carbide subnanoclusters promise their superior properties in semihydrogenation of alkynes.

Abstract:Designing high-performance catalysts with high activity and selectivity toward semihydrogenation of alkynes is one of the major goals of fine chemical industry, yet full of challenges due to the difficulties in semihydrogenation of carbon–carbon triple bond (C≡C) to carbon–carbon double bond (C═C) without further hydrogenation. Herein, we demonstrate a two-dimensionality (2D) enhanced interface-confined effect that leads to the strong interaction between lead (Pb) species and the ultrathin 2D palladium nanosheets (Pd NSs). As a result, the catalytic performance of the optimized Pd–Pb NSs in semihydrogenation of phenylacetylene can reach high conversion of 100%, high selectivity of 95.8%, and high activity of 2256 h–1. It can also endure at least six cycles with limited conversion and selectivity decays. Detailed analyses reveal that the interface-confined effect in the 2D system is much stronger than that in the 3D system, making the Pd active sites more electron-deficient with greater positive shift of the binding energy and the weaker adsorption and binding capability of styrene. Such phenomenon disappears readily after destroying the interface structure. Density functional theory calculations further reveal that the confined interfaces cause the higher kinetic energy barriers of overhydrogenation processes of styrene into phenylethane as well as the weaker adsorption of styrene, resulting in the easier removal of styrene without further hydrogenation. Abstract:Improving the catalytic selectivity of Pd catalysts is of key importance for various industrial processes and remains a challenge so far. Given the unique properties of single-atom catalysts, isolating contiguous Pd atoms into a single-Pd site with another metal to form intermetallic structures is an effective way to endow Pd with high catalytic selectivity and to stabilize the single site with the intermetallic structures. Based on density functional theory modeling, we demonstrate that the (110) surface of Pm3̅m PdIn with single-atom Pd sites shows high selectivity for semihydrogenation of acetylene, whereas the (111) surface of P4/mmm Pd3In with Pd trimer sites shows low selectivity. This idea has been further validated by experimental results that intermetallic PdIn nanocrystals mainly exposing the (110) surface exhibit much higher selectivity for acetylene hydrogenation than Pd3In nanocrystals mainly exposing the (111) surface (92% vs 21% ethylene selectivity at 90 °C). This work provides insight for rational design of bimetallic metal catalysts with specific catalytic properties.

Abstract:Herein, the preparation of a heterogeneous catalyst consisting of 1-2nm sized Pd nanoparticles supported on amino-functionalized mesoporous hollow silica nanospheres and its use for the semihydrogenation of mono- and disubstituted alkynes is reported. By utilizing this Pd nanocatalyst together with the green poisoning agent DMSO, high yields of the desired alkenes could be achieved, while suppressing the degree of over-reduction to alkanes. To our delight, the Pd nanocatalyst displayed remarkable chemoselectivity towards the alkyne moiety, allowing the transformation to be carried out in the presence of other reducible functionalities, such as halogens, carbonyl, and nitro groups.
Dual Microenvironment Modulation of Pd Nanoparticles in Covalent Organic Frameworks for Semihydrogenation of Alkynes

Abstract:The chemical microenvironment modulation of metal nanoparticles (NPs) holds promise for tackling the long-lasting challenge of the trade-off effect between activity and selectivity in catalysis. Herein, ultrafine PdCu2 NPs incorporated into covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with diverse groups on their pore walls have been fabricated for the semihydrogenation of alkynes. The Cu species, as the primary microenvironment of Pd active sites, greatly improves the selectivity. The functional groups as the secondary microenvironment around PdCu2 NPs effectively regulate the activity, in which PdCu2 NPs encapsulated in the COF bearing -CH3 groups exhibit the highest activity with >99 % conversion and 97 % selectivity. Both experimental and calculation results suggest that the functional group affects the electron-donating ability of the COFs, which successively impacts the charge transfer between COFs and Pd sites, giving rise to a modulated Pd electronic state and excellent catalytic performance.

Abstract:Selective semihydrogenation of alkynes has been a long-term and significant target, yet it remains a great challenge. Herein, bimetallic nanoparticles in a metal-organic framework (MOF), i.e., CuPd@ZIF-8 composite, featuring a cubic CuPd core and a porous ZIF-8 shell, have been rationally fabricated for this end. Given the unique physicochemical properties, the Cu nanocubes can not only convert solar energy into heat to accelerate the reaction but also serve as the seed for in situ formation of Pd nanoparticles (NPs) on their external surface to regulate the chemoselectivity of Pd active sites. The additional growth of the MOF shell is helpful to stabilize the CuPd core and offer regioselectivity via the steric hindrance effect. Ammonia borane provides active hydrogen species to significantly boost the hydrogenation and ensure the high selectivity. As a result, the CuPd@MOF exhibits high efficiency, featuring a turnover frequency (TOF, 6799 min(-1)) of 5-10(5) times higher than that in previous reports, and high chemo- and regioselectivity toward the semihydrogenation of alkynes, in the presence of NH3BH3 as a hydrogen source, under visible-light irradiation at ambient temperature.

The confined catalyst can also subtly change the electronic structure of the active center and the chemical environment near the active center through chemical coordination, thus improving the activity of the catalyst. However, the synthesis of ultrafine NPs and the scalable production of the resulting catalysts remain challenging. Here, we report a histidine metal (2+) complexation for the synthesis of highly efficient and selective MCM-41-carbon-confined PtCo nanoalloys. Histidine easily chelates metal (2+) electrostatically interacting with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) micelles, which enables the facile and scalable synthesis of ultrafine bimetallic NPs and mesoporous materials in one step. Characterization shows that these bimetallic NPs, for instance PtCo nanoalloys, are confined within the mesoporous channels of the MCM-41-C material. As a result, the MCM-41-C-confined PtCo (PtCo/MCM-41-C) nanocatalyst shows excellent catalytic performances in the selective hydrogenation of biomass-derived unsaturated aldehydes to the corresponding unsaturated alcohols under mild conditions. This strategy should be broadly applicable to a range of mesoporous material-confined metal- and metal oxide catalysts for heterogeneous catalytic reactions toward energy and environmental applications.
Alloyed PdCu Nanoparticles Within Siliceous Zeolite Crystals for Catalytic Semihydrogenation

Abstract:Selective hydrogenation of acetylene to ethylene is an industrially important process to purify the raw ethylene stream for producing high-grade polyethylene. The supported Pd catalyst exhibits superior activity for acetylene hydrogenation but suffers from poor ethylene selectivity because of the easy overhydrogenation to produce ethane. Here, we report that the PdCu alloy nanoparticles within siliceous zeolite crystals effectively tuned Pd-catalyzed overhydrogenation into semihydrogenation. This catalyst displayed an ethylene selectivity of 92.9% with a full conversion of acetylene. Mechanism studies reveal that the zeolite fixation stabilized the alloyed structure, where the electron-enriched Pd surface benefits the rapid ethylene desorption to hinder the deep hydrogenation. This work provides an efficient strategy for a rational design of bimetallic metal catalysts for selective hydrogenations.

Abstract:Although precious transition metals such as palladium, platinum, and iridium are widely used in hydrogenation reactions, the earth-abundant transition metal-catalyzed highly selective semi-hydrogenation of terminal alkynes to terminal alkenes remains poorly developed and a challenge. Herein we demonstrate the excellent selective, cost-effective semi-hydrogenation of terminal alkynes via a novel graphene encapsulated Ni@N/C catalyst. The graphene layer encapsulated nano-catalyst Ni@N/C could significantly avoid metal leaching and improve the stability of the catalyst. The strong interaction of nitrogen with the Ni nanoparticles regulates the activity of Ni towards selective semi-hydrogenation of terminal alkynes. Substrates having un-functionalized as well as functionalized substituents, and substrates having sensitive functional groups (olefins, ketones) which pose a challenge to hydrogenate, were semi-hydrogenated with excellent conversion (up to 99%) and selectivity (up to 99%) under optimized reaction conditions.
