Abstract:Pure molybdenum (Mo) additively manufactured via laser powder bed fusion is challenging due to its high laser reflectivity and sensitivity to cracking. To achieve crack-free pure Mo alloy and enhance production efficiency, this study employs a high-power (350 W) printing process with a layer thickness of 30 mu m, resulting in the successful fabrication of pure Mo with a relative density of 99.2%. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) revealed that the pure Mo specimens prepared by LPBF process exhibited different preferential grain orientations and lattice distortions in various building directions, with higher texture strength on the XOZ plane and greater lattice distortion on the XOY plane. The hardness of the pure Mo specimens reached 208 HV, with uniaxial compressive strength and elongation at 535 MPa and 20.9%, respectively, surpassing existing literature values by 37.2% and 8.0%. Furthermore, the dry friction behavior and mechanism of LPBF-manufactured pure molybdenum were investigated for the first time and compared to traditional powder metallurgy. Consequently, this research offers valuable insights for manufacturing crack-free LPBF pure molybdenum components with 30 mu m layer thickness, boasting superior mechanical and wear resistance.

Abstract:W/Mo-oxides of the hexagonal tungsten bronze (HTB) type have been investigated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy to obtain detailed insight into the substitution process of W by Mo that leads to mixed HTB frameworks. Both the morphology of the nanostructured W/Mo-HTBs as well as the oxidation state of Mo are significantly influenced through the incorporation of different alkali cations into the hexagonal channels of this open structure. A variety of complementary analytical methods, including TG, in situ and ex situ XRD, SEM, and solid-state NMR analyses, were applied to determine the thermal stability of the obtained W/Mo-HTB materials with respect to their alkali cation and NH4+ contents. A strong correlation between composition and stability was found with the Rb-W/Mo-HTBs exhibiting the highest structural and morphological resistance among the series (up to 580 degrees C). The NH3-sensing properties of selected W/Mo-oxides in test atmospheres furthermore point to promising features of the Rb-stabilized hexagonal framework materials.

Abstract:Molybdenum‐tungsten (MoW) alloy composed of molybdenum (Mo) and tungsten (W), is a popular high-temperature material. In this paper, a new method for preparing MoW solid solution alloy has been proposed. To resolve the problem of low extent of solid solution and large grain size, ultrafine MoW composite powder and Mo-W-Al2O3 composite powder were synthesized by spray drying combined with carbothermic pre-reduction and deep reduction by hydrogen. The results show that the method can effectively promote the formation of MoW solid solution, and the particle sizes of the four composite powders (Mo-30 W, Mo-50 W, Mo-30 W-0.5Al2O3, Mo-50 W-0.5Al2O3) were 50–200 nm. After sintering at 1600 °C, all alloys can achieve a high relative density (97%-98%) while retaining a small grain size and good comprehensive properties. Meanwhile, the effect of Al2O3 doping on the sintering performance of MoW alloys was also investigated in detail. The results showed that doping of 0.5 wt%Al2O3 reduced the grain size of MoW alloy from 5 μm to 3 μm. In addition, the hardness of Mo-30 W alloy and Mo-50 W alloy were increased to 471 HV and 534 HV, while the bending strength was increased to 612 MPa and 647 MPa, respectively.

Abstract:A new family of ternary nano-laminated compounds, MAB phases, are studied as a promising class of neutron shielding materials for applications within fusion reactors. The shielding capacity against high-energy neutrons was evaluated, and the damage tolerance of MoAlB against Si+ irradiation was investigated over the temperature range of RT- 600 °C. The linear attenuation coefficients of these materials over wide neutron-energy ranges imply that Mo(W)AlB have a high neutron shielding capacity. MoAlB shows a strong resistance to crack formation and excellent tolerance to amorphization under higher temperatures. The detailed thermal dynamic behaviors (reaction barrier and migration barrier) associated with the defects in MoAlB were studied through DFT calculations. Also, the lattice parameter changes are related to the formation of various point defects and the defect evolution evidenced by Rietveld refinement of the GIXRD and DFT calculations. MoAlB is confirmed to be a great candidate as a neutron shielding material.

Abstract:W85Cu15 alloys with different Mo contents of 0, 5, 10 and 15 wt% were fabricated by an infiltration method. The microstructure, comprehensive properties, arc erosion resistance and current-carrying friction properties of WMoCu alloys were studied. The results show that a WMo solid solution has formed between the W phase and the Mo phase, and a clear core-shell structure was found around the W particles in the WMoCu alloy, which improves the interface bonding between Cu and W, thereby enhances the comprehensive properties of the WMoCu alloy. The tensile strength of WMoCu alloy at elevated temperature(600 °C) is 23.8 %∼57.4 % higher than that of WCu alloy. This is due to the good interfacial bonding between the phases in the WMoCu alloy and the high thermal stability of the WMo transition layer. The addition of the element Mo changes the arc erosion behavior, which is related to the fibrous W/Mo phases in the WMoCu alloy. This improves the arc ablation resistance of the WMoCu alloys, prevents concentrated arc erosion, and leaves no ablation pits and microcracks on the erosion surface. Compared with W85Cu15 alloy, the friction coefficient of WMoCu alloy decreases by 2.4 %∼26.1 %, and W70Mo15Cu15 alloy has the lowest wear rate, which is 50 % lower than that of W85Cu15 alloy.

Abstract:Synthesis and characterization of tungsten based mixed valence state nanoparticles and their novel applications are reviewed. The mixed valence state tungsten based homogeneous nanomaterials such as bronze structure MxWO3 (M = Na+, K+, Rb+, Cs+, NH4+, etc.) and tungsten sub-oxide W18O49 possess excellent infrared (IR) light shielding property, implying their great potential applications on heat ray shielding and indoor energy saving effect in summer season. Also, some novel properties such as electric conductivity, bio thermal therapy function and electrochromic properties of mixed valence state tungsten based materials are introduced. The design of components, formation of composites and structure control of thin films are expected to realize the property enhancement and candidates for practice application as window materials. The multifunctionality of the mixed valence state based composites also implies great potential on novel applications of various building materials.

Abstract:The effects of molybdenum alloying on phonon and thermodynamic properties of binary tungsten-molybdenum alloys have been studied by first principles method based on density functional perturbation theory (DFPT). Firstly, the results of lattice constants display that our calculated values for W 1−x Mo x (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1) are broadly consistent with other theoretical and experimental data. Next, the lattice dynamics and phonon density of states for binary W-Mo alloys are investigated. The calculated phonon frequencies of W 1−x Mo x (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1) present a remarkable hardening in the wake of the enhancement of the proportional fraction of Mo, which indicates that doping Mo will improve the lattice stability of W. Finally, several thermodynamic properties of binary tungsten-molybdenum alloys, such as C v , △E, △F, S, are predicted reasonably by utilizing the linear-response techniques. In addition, by investigating the Debye temperature of W 1−x Mo x (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1), we observe that the Debye temperature of the system raises with the increase of Mo concentration x, which further confirms that its change is obviously consistent with the results of the phonon dispersion relationship of the sample.

Abstract:The dispersion and crystal phase changes of tungsten end molybdenum compounds on samples prepared by impregnating ammonium metatungstate and ammonium paramolybdate on amorphous ZrO2 during the calcination have been investigated in detail. It was found that after the calcination at 350 degrees C tungsten and molybdenum existed in the form of isopolyacidic anions so that the apparent dispersion thresholds determined by XRD method were much greater than the calculated monolayer dispersion capacities of WO3 and MoO3 on ZrO2. After calcination at 800 degrees C the W and Mo dispersed on ZrO2 transformed into the form of WO3 on ZrMo2O8, and the experimental apparent dispersion thresholds became approximate to the monolayer dispersion capacities of WO3 and ZrMo2O8 on ZrO2. The results of measurements by Hammett indicator and n-pentane isomerization methods showed that H-o of the WO3/ZrO2 systems reached -13-8-14.5 and that of the MoO3/ZrO2 systems -12.0-12.7, and the samples containing the amounts of WO3 and MoO3 close to their monolayer dispersion capacities and calcined at 800 degrees C displayed stronger superacidity.
Impact of Mo+2 addition and thermal annealing on the surface morphology, electrical transport properties and Mott's parameters of WO3 films for potential photonic devices

Abstract:This work investigates the compositional dependence and thermal annealing of the morphological properties, electrical conductivity mechanisms and Mott's parameters of sprayed MoxW1-xO3 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.10 and 0,20) thin films. The prepared thin films were examined using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. In addition, the two-point probe method was used to calculate the electrical properties of MoxW1-xO3 thin films. The FTIR results revealed that; the tungsten hydroxyl bond (W-OH) and the surface hydroxyl group vibrated within the ranges of 1558.62-1645.56 cm-1 and, 3296.76 and 3424.34 cm-1, respectively. Furthermore, a prominent band in the spectrum spanning from 850 to 650 cm-1 represents the W-O-W bridge mode. The FE-SEM investigations found that the molybdenum (Mo) dopant caused significant changes in the surface morphology of the films. The EDX results showed that the percentages of the isotropic elements MoxW1-xO3 agreed well with those obtained by atomic weight. Studies of the conduction mechanism indicate that the transition temperature was approximately 393K. Corresponding to Mott's model, the conduction mechanism below this temperature was across the variable hopping conduction band near the Fermi level. The mechanism exhibited a cycle of localised states through activated thermionic emission above 393K. Mott parameters were also estimated in addition to barrier potential energies, trapping state energies, local state densities, and other variables. The results revealed that both temperature areas had a rise in ρo and ρ1 values during and after annealing. The ΔEo and ΔE1 values in each temperature area decreased as the Mo-ion concentration increased. Furthermore, the conversion temperature gradually reduced as Mo was added. Based on these properties, the study's overall findings indicate that MoxW1-xO3 is suitable for future photonic devices and optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:The Mo alloys reinforced by Al2O3 particles were fabricated by hydrothermal synthesis and powder metallurgy. The microstructures of Mo−Al2O3 alloys were studied by using XRD, SEM and TEM. The results show that Al2O3 particles, existing as a stable hexagonal phase (α-Al2O3), are uniformly dispersed in Mo matrix. The ultrafine α-Al2O3 particles remarkably refine grain size and increase dislocation density of Mo alloys. Moreover, a good interfacial bonding zone between α-Al2O3 and Mo grain is obtained. The crystallographic orientations of the interface of the Al2O3 particles and Mo matrix are [ 1 ¯ 11 ] α - Al 2 O 3 / / [ 1 ¯ 11 ] Mo and [ 1 1 ¯ 2 ] α - Al 2 O 3 / / [ 0 1 ¯ 1 ] Mo . Due to the effect of secondary- phase and dislocation strengthening, the yield strength of Mo−2.0vol.%Al2O3 alloy annealed at 1200 °C is approximately 56.0% higher than that of pure Mo. The results confirm that the addition of Al2O3 particles is a promising method to improve the mechanical properties of Mo alloys.

Abstract:In this work, WMo nanopowders were prepared by sol-gel synthesis combined with hydrogen reduction. The phase distribution of the powders with calcination and reduction at different temperatures was analyzed to figure out the effect of temperature on the reaction process. The calcined powders were further analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential thermal analysis (DSC). The phase composition, grain size and powder morphology of the resulted WMo nanoparticles have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The precursor calcined at 450 °C consisted of W0.4Mo0.6O3 and MoO3 phases which can be completely reduced to be pure WMo nanopowders with an average grain size of 20–40 nm at a low temperature of 700 °C for 1 h. The grain growth characteristics of the WMo nanopowders were investigated by analyzing the compacts annealed at temperatures ranging from 950 °C to 1400 °C for different time periods. The grain growth mechanism and the activation energy (Qg = 220 ± 21 kJ/mol) of WMo nanoparticles was also obtained.

Abstract:This paper presents a new route to one-step fabrication and in situ application of hydrogen tungsten and molybdenum bronze (HxMO3) at room temperature and triggers the interdisciplinary research of multifunctional materials between liquid metal and transition-metal oxides (TMOs). Gallium-based liquid metal (GBLM) enables the discoloration effect on TMOs in acid electrolytes at ambient temperature. The underlying mechanism behind this phenomenon can be ascribed to the redox effect at the interface of liquid metal and TMOs in acid electrolytes. Both the theoretical calculations and the experimental results demonstrate that the increasing intercalation of H+ ions into the lattice of WO3 raises the electron density at the Fermi level and charge carriers. H+ ion content in the obtained HxMO3 can be controlled in our approach to meet different requirements. Taking advantage of the one-step fabrication and room-temperature liquid phase nature of the liquid metal, HxMO3 is synthesized under ambient conditions in a very short time, which is inaccessible with conventional solution-processed mechanical alloying, or other methods. The HxMO3 obtained in this one-step approach enables convenient and simple applications for biomimetic camouflage, cost-effective energy storage, H+ ion sensor, and electronic switch.

Abstract:Hexagonal tungsten bronze (HTB) exhibits high near-infrared (NIR) absorption and visible-light transmittance, making it a promising material for sustainable energy applications. This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of recent research on HTB's optical properties, particularly focusing on its NIR-shielding performance. The structural analysis compares the effects of two pore-filling scenarios on performance, while the discussion of synthesis methods evaluates three main preparation techniques and their optimal application based on particle size and morphology. In addition, this review delves into the atomic-level mechanisms driving performance variations, identifying the key factors influencing HTB's functionality. Future research directions are proposed, emphasizing the need to explore these mechanisms further to enhance HTB's optical applications in environmental and advanced technological domains. This review aims to serve as a guide for advancing HTB research in the optical field.

Abstract:Due to the high melting points of W and Mo, WMo solid solution powder needs to be prepared at extremely high temperatures using W and Mo elemental powder. Herein, the nano-sized WMo solid solution powders with different Mo content were successfully fabricated by solution combustion synthesis. And then the WMo nanopowders were used to prepare W-Mo-Cu composites by liquid phase sintering. The results revealed that the addition of Mo can promote the densification of the W/Cu composite powders and improve the microhardness of the WCu composites, while the conductivity will inevitably be reduced. When the amount of Mo addition is 10 wt% due to inhomogeneous Mo distribution in the starting powder. Meanwhile, the Mo segregation region may be responsible for the formation of Mo 2 C phase in (W20Cu)-30Cu, due to the susceptibility of Mo to react with carbon. During the arc ablation process, the Mo in the W particles dissolves into the liquid-phase Cu, increasing the viscosity and reducing the splashing of the Cu.

Abstract:The α-octamolybdate-supported compound: [Fe(2,2′-bipy)3]2[α-Mo8O26] has been unexpectedly synthesized during a diffuse process and characterized by the IR spectroscopy, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and the single crystal X-ray diffraction. The title compound exhibits an interesting 3D honeycomb ‘host’ supramolecular network with 1D channels, in which only α-octamolybdate anions ‘guests’ reside. The title compound shows the anisotropic property and probably will be applied as a novel semiconductor in the future.

Abstract:This study reports on the synthesis and characterization of MoB2/MoB ceramic particulate reinforced W-1 wt % Ni matrix (W1Ni) composites for their potential usage as plasma facing materials. A powder metallurgical route consisting of mechanical alloying (MA), cold pressing (CP), cold isostatic pressing (CIP) and pressureless sintering (PS) was applied for the production of MoB2/MoB particulate reinforced W1Ni composites. Different percentages of MoB2/MoB (x = 1, 2, 5 and 10 wt %) were incorporated into W1Ni pre-alloy. MA was performed in a planetary ball mill for different times as 24, 48 and 72 h. After compaction using CP and CIP, green bodies were pressureless sintered at 1400 degrees C for 1 h under Ar/H-2 gas flow. According to the results of XRD characterization, and lattice strain, crystallite size and particle size analyses performed on the powders, MA time was determined as 72 h with an average lattice strain of 2.37% and crystallite size of 7.40 nm. Sintered samples characterized in terms of compositional, microstructural, wear, density and microhardness properties exhibited that W1Ni-10 wt % MoB2/MoB composite has the highest hardness value of similar to 6.74 GPa and the lowest wear volume loss of 2.08 x 10(-4) mm(3), as compared to those of other samples. Sintered samples exposed to 20 eV He+ ion irradiation with a flux of 1.102 x 10(21) ions/(m(2)s), irradiation fluence of 1.32 x 10(24) ions/m(2) for 20 min had a degraded wave-shaped structure (wavy erosion layers) on their surfaces. However, W1Ni-2 wt % MoB2/MoB composite showed relatively more resistant to ion irradiation attributed to its higher densification rate.

Abstract:NbMoTaW refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) possess superior high-temperature mechanical strength. However, their practical applications are limited by low room-temperature plastic strain. In the present study, NbMoTaW x (x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0) RHEAs were prepared. The microstructural characteristics, mechanical properties and oxidation resistance of these RHEAs were investigated. The NbMoTaW x RHEAs were all single-phase solid solutions. With the addition of W content, the yield strength, density and hardness of the alloy gradually increased, and the grain size decreased. Notably, a significant improvement in the compressive ductility of the investigated NbMoTaW x RHEAs was observed. The highest mechanical strength (1712 MPa) and ductility (10.6 %) were exhibited by NbMoTaW 0.4 . Fracture surfaces indicate the alloy fractured along the grain. The W can be solidly dissolved in the Nb and Ta oxides, altering the structure of the oxide to impede the entry of oxygen and slow down the rate of oxidation. The increase of W enhanced the oxidation resistance of the alloys.

Effects of Mo Replacement on the Structure and Visible-Light-Induced Photocatalytic Performances of Bi2wo6 Photocatalyst

Abstract:Phase-pure Bi2MoxW1-xO6 (0 <= x <= 1) photocatalysts were synthesized via a hydrothermal method. The as-prepared Bi2MoxW1-xO6 photocatalysts had an Aurivillius crystal structure and showed special anisotropic growth. The optical absorption spectra of Bi2MoxW1-xO6 were red-shifted monotonically as the value of x increased. On the basis of theoretical calculations, the introduction of Mo atom into Bi2WO6 could reduce the conduction band level of Bi2WO6, so the band gap energy was reduced. The curvature of the conduction band became smaller with an increase in the Mo content due to the different electronegativities of Mo 4d and W 5d. The photocatalytic activities determined by rhodamine B degradation under visible light irradiation (lambda > 420 nm) of Bi2MoxW1-xO6 photocatalysts were significantly improved as compared with Bi2MoO6. The higher efficiency of Bi2WO6 was attributed to more effective photoelectron transfer in the conduction band with larger curvature. The photocatalytic activities under visible light irradiation (lambda > 450 nm) of Bi2MoxW1-xO6 photocatalysts were much higher than that of Bi2WO6. The mechanism was discussed on the basis of the cystal structure, morphology, and electronic stucture. This work provides a strategy for developing active photocatalysts with more utilization of visible light.
