Abstract:We present a novel design of multi-color (405 nm, 532 nm and 780 nm) illuminated silicon nitride (Si3N4) waveguide platform for two-dimensional label-free super-resolution imaging based on frequency shifting and Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm reconstruction. We simulated the light propagating process and imaging process, indicating the capability of super-resolution imaging with high signal-to-noise ratio by mode control in the waveguide. Dispersion of the sample was also analysed for multi-wavelength illumination. The Si3N4 waveguide platform provides a convenient and high-quality illumination approach for frequency-shift-based super-resolution imaging.

Abstract:Waveguide-based spatial frequency shift (SFS) super-resolution imaging has attracted growing interest for its high integration, low cost and compatibility with integrated circuit processes. However, a missing band in the spatial frequency (SF) domain severely impedes the final distortionless super-resolution image reconstruction. Here, we present a tunable multi-wavelength SFS method that can light the sample with tunable wavelength illuminations in a sequence using multiple directions of waveguide illumination. The SFS scheme provides broad and complete spectrum information, enabling a reconstructed super-resolution image with high fidelity. An etched three-slot structure and randomly distributed polymer beads on the waveguide surface are imaged and reconstructed with a Gerchberg–Saxton (G-S) SF synthesis algorithm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report that shows the waveguide-based label-free super-resolution imaging capability of complex random samples. In the future, the novel SFS imaging waveguide can potentially be integrated with conventional microscopes for chip-based label-free super-resolution imaging.

Abstract:In this review, we introduce some chip-based waveguide biosensing and imaging techniques, which significantly reduce the complexity of the entire system. These techniques use a well-confined evanescent field to interact with the surrounding materials and achieve high sensitivity sensing and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) super-resolution imaging. The fabrication process of these chips is simple and compatible with conventional semiconductor fabrication methods, allowing high-yield production. Combined with recently developed chip-based light sources, these techniques offer the possibility of biosensing and super-resolution imaging based on integrated circuits.

Abstract:Using a 4-mm-long compact silicon-nanowire waveguide, we demonstrated nonlinear-optic effects such as the spectral broadening of optical short pulses due to self-phase modulation and nonlinear transmittance due to two-photon absorption. At a 12W input power level, we observed a 1.5-pi nonlinear phase shift and a strong saturation of optical output power in a sample. We also estimated the third-order nonlinear coefficient 112 and the two-photon absorption coefficient beta, and compared them with those previously reported.

Abstract:Nonlinear light-matter interactions have emerged as a promising platform for various applications, including imaging, nanolasing, background-free sensing, etc. Subwavelength dielectric resonators offer unique opportunities for manipulating light at the nanoscale and miniturising optical elements. Here, we explore the resonantly enhanced four-wave mixing (FWM) process from individual silicon resonators and propose an innovative FWM-enabled infrared imaging technique that leverages the capabilities of these subwavelength resonators. Specifically, we designed high-Q silicon resonators hosting dual quasi-bound states in the continuum at both the input pump and signal beams, enabling efficient conversion of infrared light to visible radiation. Moreover, by employing a point-scanning imaging technique, we achieve infrared imaging conversion while minimising the dependence on high-power input sources. This combination of resonant enhancement and point-scanning imaging opens up new possibilities for nonlinear imaging using individual resonators and shows potential in advancing infrared imaging techniques for high-resolution imaging, sensing, and optical communications.

Highly-Sensitive Optical Biosensors Based on Silicon-On-Insulator Nanowire Waveguide

Abstract:Summary form only given. Optical waveguide sensors based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) nanowire have received great interest due to their potential applications in many fields including bacteria and virus detection, medical diagnostics, food quality control, environment monitoring, and drug development. Various types of SOI sensors have been developed, including Mach-Zehnder interferometer, microdisks and microring resonators. High-sensitivity sensors based on cascaded double-ring resonators and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) cascaded with a microring resonator employing Vernier effect have recently been proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Simple and low-cost intensity interrogation can be employed without using a high resolution spectrometer or a narrow line-width tunable laser. Label-free detection capability of these two types of SOI sensors have also been demonstrated. This talk reviews our work on the design, fabrication and measurement of SOI nanowire based high-sensitivity biosensors employing Vernier effect. Biosensing experiments using cascaded double-ring sensor and Mach-Zehnder-ring sensor integrated with microfluidic channels are also presented.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate silicon-on-insulator (SOI) channel waveguides with propagation loss and $r$ = 10 $\mu$$\text{m}$ bends with bending loss as low as 2 dB/cm and 0.02 dB/90 $^{\circ }$ in the broad wavelength range of 3.68–3.88 $\mu$ $\text{m}$. We also indicate the limitation of SOI waveguide loss in mid-infrared wavelength by analyzing loss mechanisms. Based on this high-performance mid-infrared waveguide, we systematically analyze the coupling efficiency of various directional couplers, which are critical and commonly used building blocks for on-chip light routing and power splitting. By varying coupling length and sweeping wavelength, the performance of directional coupler with various gap separations is meticulously investigated in 3.68–3.88 $\mu$ $\text{m}$. A experimental database for directional coupler with any power splitting ratio is provided. Our results offer a promising broadband platform for dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) and applications that require precise control of coupling such as racetrack resonator in the mid-infrared region.

Abstract:Most of the research on silicon-on-insulator integrated circuits so far has been focused on applications for telecommunication. By using the large refractive index of silicon, compact complex photonic functions have been integrated on a silicon chip. However, the transparency of silicon up to 8.5 μm enables the use of the platform for the mid infrared wavelength region, albeit limited by the absorption in silicon oxide from 4 μm on. This could lead to a whole new set of integrated photonics circuits for sensing, given the distinct absorption bands of many molecules in this wavelength region. These long wavelength integrated photonic circuits would preferably need broadband or widely tunable sources to probe these absorption bands. We propose the use of nonlinear optics in silicon wire waveguides to generate light in this wavelength range. Nonlinear interactions in just a few cm of silicon wire waveguides can be very efficient as a result of both the high nonlinear index of silicon and the high optical confinement obtained in these waveguides. We demonstrate the generation of a supercontinuum spanning from 1.53 μm up to 2.55 μm in a 2 cm dispersion engineered silicon nanowire waveguide by pumping the waveguide with strong picoseconds pulses at 2.12 μm [1]. Furthermore we demonstrate broadband nonlinear optical amplification in the mid infrared up to 50 dB [2] in these silicon waveguides. By using this broadband parametric gain a silicon-based synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator (OPO) is constructed [3]. This OPO is tunable over 70 nm around a central wavelength of 2080 nm. Finally, we also demonstrate the use of higher order dispersion terms to get phase matching between optical signals at very different optical frequencies in silicon wire waveguides. In this way we demonstrate conversion of signals at 2.44 μm to the telecommunication band with efficiencies up to +19.5 dB [4]. One particularly attractive application of such wide conversion is the possibility of converting weak signals in the mid-IR to the telecom window after which they can be detected by a high-sensitivity telecom-band optical receiver.
Mid-infrared Nonlinear Silicon Hybrid Waveguide with High Figure of Merit

Abstract:Mid-infrared (MIR) integrated waveguides with strong local field enhancement and relatively low loss have shown their potential in nonlinear optical applications. We present a novel highly nonlinear silicon hybrid waveguide by setting an insulator-metal-insulator structure with [2-[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]-3-([4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]ethynyl)buta-1,3-diene-1,1,4,4-tetracarbonitrile] (DDMEBT) and silver materials into the silicon slot. The mode field is strongly confined in the DDMEBT layers via the surface plasmon polariton effect. Two rectangular silicon nanobridges are used to further confine the optical field and reduce the loss simultaneously. The waveguide dimensions are optimized to obtain a figure of merit as high as 0.55 at 2.1 mu m and a zero-dispersion wavelength of 2.06 mu m. In a 6.6-mm-long waveguide, a maximum four-wave mixing efficiency of -6.65 dB and a bandwidth of 512 nm (1.894-2.406 mu m) can be simultaneously obtained, pumped by a 2.104-mu m source with a power of only 500 mW. Our designed waveguide exhibits excellent overall performance for nonlinear optical applications such as all-optical signal processing in the MIR band. (C) 2018 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Spectral broadening of optical pulses based on the nonlinear effect in a Si-wire waveguide was demonstrated for the first time. Spectra of 2-ps optical pulses from a mode-locked laser diode were obviously broadened in a 4-mm long Si-wire waveguide.

Abstract:A silicon/silicon-rich nitride hybrid-core waveguide has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated for nonlinear applications to fill the gap between the pure silicon waveguide and the pure silicon nitride waveguide with respect to the nonlinear properties. The hybrid-core waveguide presented here leverages the advantages of the silicon and the silicon-rich nitride waveguide platforms, showing a large nonlinearity γ of 72 ± 5 W-1 m-1 for energy-efficient four-wave mixing wavelength conversion. At the same time, the drawbacks of the material platforms are dramatically mitigated, exhibiting a reduced two-photon absorption coefficient βTPA of 0.023 cm/GW resulting in an increased nonlinear figure-of-merit as large as 21.6. A four-wave-mixing conversion efficiency as large as -5.3 dB has been achieved with the promise to be larger than 0 dB. These findings are strong arguments supporting the silicon/silicon-rich nitride hybrid-core waveguide to be used for energy-efficient nonlinear photonic applications.

Abstract:Broadband mid-infrared (IR) supercontinuum laser sources are essential for spectroscopy in the molecular fingerprint region. Here, we report generation of octave-spanning and coherent mid-IR supercontinua in As 2 S 3 -silica nanospike hybrid waveguides pumped by a custom-built 2.8 μm femtosecond fiber laser. The waveguides are formed by pressure-assisted melt-filling of molten As 2 S 3 into silica capillaries, allowing the dispersion and nonlinearity to be precisely tailored. Continuous coherent spectra spanning from 1.1 μm to 4.8 μm (30 dB level) are observed when the waveguide is designed so that 2.8 μm lies in the anomalous dispersion regime. Moreover, linearly tapered millimeter-scale As 2 S 3 -silica waveguides are fabricated and investigated for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, showing much broader supercontinua than uniform waveguides, with improved spectral coherence. The waveguides are demonstrated to be long-term stable and water-resistant due to the shielding of the As 2 S 3 by the fused silica sheath. They offer an alternative route to generating broadband mid-IR supercontinua, with applications in frequency metrology and molecular spectroscopy, especially in humid and aqueous environments.

Abstract:We demonstrate silicon waveguides that support phase free propagation in the telecom regime. These waveguides have smaller footprints and exhibit improved energy transfer capabilities as compared to previous optical waveguides that support phase advance-free modes. We measure the effective refractive index using on-chip interferometry and observe a zero-crossing around a wavelength of lambda = 1625 nm. At this wavelength, we observe the coherent oscillations of waves that span the entire length of the waveguide. These waveguides are based on a 220-nm-thick silicon-on insulator platform and, thus, are inherently compatible with established silicon photonic technologies.

Abstract:We numerically study silicon waveguides on silica showing that it is possible to simultaneously guide optical and acoustic waves in the technologically important silicon on insulator (SOI) material system. Thin waveguides, or fins, exhibit geometrically softened mechanical modes at gigahertz frequencies with phase velocities below the Rayleigh velocity in glass, eliminating acoustic radiation losses. We propose slot waveguides on glass with telecom optical frequencies and strong radiation pressure forces resulting in Brillouin gains on the order of 500 and 50,000 1/(Wm) for backward and forward Brillouin scattering, respectively.
