Abstract:Using a 4-mm-long compact silicon-nanowire waveguide, we demonstrated nonlinear-optic effects such as the spectral broadening of optical short pulses due to self-phase modulation and nonlinear transmittance due to two-photon absorption. At a 12W input power level, we observed a 1.5-pi nonlinear phase shift and a strong saturation of optical output power in a sample. We also estimated the third-order nonlinear coefficient 112 and the two-photon absorption coefficient beta, and compared them with those previously reported.

Abstract:Single-mode optical wave guiding properties of silica and silicon subwavelength-diameter wires are studied with exact solutions of Maxwell's equations. Single mode conditions, modal fields, power distribution, group velocities and waveguide dispersions are studied. It shows that air-clad subwavelength-diameter wires have interesting properties such as tight-confinement ability, enhanced evanescent fields and large waveguide dispersions that are very promising for developing future microphotonic devices with subwavelength-width structures.
Subwavelength-diameter Silica Wire for Light In-Coupling to Silicon-Based Waveguide

Abstract:Coupling between subwavelength-diameter silica wires and silicon-based waveguides is studied using the parallel three-dimensional (3D) finite-different time-domain method. Conventional butt-coupling to a silica-substrated silicon wire waveguide gives above 40% transmission at the wavelength range from 1300 to 1750 nm with good robustness against axial misalignments. Slow light can be generated by counter-directional coupling between a silica wire and a two-dimensional (2D) silicon photonic crystal slab waveguide. Through dispersion-band engineering, 82% transmission is achieved over a coupling distance of 50 lattice constants. The group velocity is estimated as 1/35 of the light speed in vacuum.

Abstract:Si photonic wire waveguides are attractive for constructing various optical devices that are extremely small because the waveguides can be bent with extremely small curvatures of less than a few micrometers of bending radius. We have fabricated optical directional couplers with the waveguides and demonstrated their fundamental characteristics. Their coupling length was extremely short, several micrometers, because of strong optical coupling between the waveguide cores. We have also demonstrated wavelength-demultiplexing functions for these devices with a long coupled waveguide. Optical outputs from a device with a 100-mum-long coupled waveguide changed reciprocally with a 20-nm wavelength spacing between the parallel and cross ports. We also demonstrated the operation of ultrasmall optical add-drop multiplexers (OADMs) with Bragg grating reflectors made up of the waveguides. The dropping wavelength bandwidth of the OADMs was less than 0.7 nm, and these dropping wavelengths could be precisely designed by adjusting the grating period. Using the Si photonic wire waveguide, we have also demonstrated thermo-optic switches. Metal thin-film heaters were evaporated onto the branch of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer that incorporated the waveguide to achieve switching operations by thermo-optic effects. In these switching operations, we observed more than 30 dB of extinction ratio, less than 90 mW of switching power, and less than 100 mus of switching speed

Abstract:We fabricated various microscopic optical devices using photonic crystal slab and Si-wire waveguides and demonstrated their fundamental characteristics. We demonstrated a channel-dropping filter with a photonic crystal slab point-defect optical cavity. Wavelength resolution of less than 1.5 nm and signal dropping efficiency of more than 90 % were obtained for a 20-gm-square device. We also demonstrated an optical add/drop multiplexer with Bragg grating reflectors made from Si-wire waveguides. Its dropping wavelength bandwidth was less than 2 run, and the center wavelength of the dropped optical signal could be tuned by thenno-optic control using a microheater formed on the Bragg reflector. Using Si-wire waveguide, we also demonstrated thermo-optic switches by forming a micro heater on a branch of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer constructed from the waveguides. In this switching operation, we observed an extinction ratio of more than 30 dB, switching power of less than 100 mW, and switching response speed of less than 100 las using a 1 x 2 optical switch with an 85 x 30 mu m(2) footprint. Using the 1 x 2 optical switch elements, we also fabricated a compact 1 x 4 optical switch and demonstrated its fundamental operation.

Abstract:Silicon photonic devices based on silicon photonic wire waveguides are especially attractive devices, since they can be ultra-compact and low-power consumption. In this paper, we demonstrated various devices fabricated on silicon photonic wire waveguides. They included optical directional couplers, reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers, 1 x 2, 1 x 4, 1 x 8 and 4 x 4 optical switches, ring resonators. The characteristics of these devices show that silicon photonic wire waveguides offer promising platforms in constructing compact and power-saving photonic devices and systems.

Abstract:We observe spectral broadening of more than 350 nm upon propagation of ultrashort pulses in a 4.7-mm-long silicon-photonic-wire waveguide. The output spectral characteristics are shown to be consistent, in part, with higher-order soliton radiative effects.

Abstract:Most of the research on silicon-on-insulator integrated circuits so far has been focused on applications for telecommunication. By using the large refractive index of silicon, compact complex photonic functions have been integrated on a silicon chip. However, the transparency of silicon up to 8.5 μm enables the use of the platform for the mid infrared wavelength region, albeit limited by the absorption in silicon oxide from 4 μm on. This could lead to a whole new set of integrated photonics circuits for sensing, given the distinct absorption bands of many molecules in this wavelength region. These long wavelength integrated photonic circuits would preferably need broadband or widely tunable sources to probe these absorption bands. We propose the use of nonlinear optics in silicon wire waveguides to generate light in this wavelength range. Nonlinear interactions in just a few cm of silicon wire waveguides can be very efficient as a result of both the high nonlinear index of silicon and the high optical confinement obtained in these waveguides. We demonstrate the generation of a supercontinuum spanning from 1.53 μm up to 2.55 μm in a 2 cm dispersion engineered silicon nanowire waveguide by pumping the waveguide with strong picoseconds pulses at 2.12 μm [1]. Furthermore we demonstrate broadband nonlinear optical amplification in the mid infrared up to 50 dB [2] in these silicon waveguides. By using this broadband parametric gain a silicon-based synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator (OPO) is constructed [3]. This OPO is tunable over 70 nm around a central wavelength of 2080 nm. Finally, we also demonstrate the use of higher order dispersion terms to get phase matching between optical signals at very different optical frequencies in silicon wire waveguides. In this way we demonstrate conversion of signals at 2.44 μm to the telecommunication band with efficiencies up to +19.5 dB [4]. One particularly attractive application of such wide conversion is the possibility of converting weak signals in the mid-IR to the telecom window after which they can be detected by a high-sensitivity telecom-band optical receiver.
Self-Phase Modulation and Nonlinear Loss in Silicon Nanophotonic Wires Near the Mid-Infrared Two-Photon Absorption Edge

Abstract:We report an experimental study of picosecond pulse propagation through a 4-mm-long Si nanophotonic wire with normal dispersion, at excitation wavelengths from 1775 to 2250 nm. This wavelength range crosses the mid-infrared two-photon absorption edge of Si at ~2200 nm. Significant reduction in nonlinear loss due to two-photon absorption is measured as excitation wavelengths approach 2200 nm. At high input power, self-phase modulation is clearly demonstrated by the development of power-dependant spectral fringes. Asymmetry and blue-shift in the appearance of the spectral fringes at 1775 nm versus 2200 nm is further shown to originate from a strong reduction in the intra-pulse density of two-photon absorption-generated free carriers and the associated free-carrier dispersion. Analysis of experimental data and comparison with numerical simulations illustrates that the two-photon absorption coefficient β(TPA) obtained here from nanophotonic wire measurements is in reasonable agreement with prior measurements of bulk silicon crystals, and that bulk Si values of the nonlinear refractive index n(2) can be confidently incorporated in the modeling of pulse propagation in deeply-scaled waveguide structures.
Mid-infrared Nonlinear Silicon Hybrid Waveguide with High Figure of Merit

Abstract:Mid-infrared (MIR) integrated waveguides with strong local field enhancement and relatively low loss have shown their potential in nonlinear optical applications. We present a novel highly nonlinear silicon hybrid waveguide by setting an insulator-metal-insulator structure with [2-[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]-3-([4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]ethynyl)buta-1,3-diene-1,1,4,4-tetracarbonitrile] (DDMEBT) and silver materials into the silicon slot. The mode field is strongly confined in the DDMEBT layers via the surface plasmon polariton effect. Two rectangular silicon nanobridges are used to further confine the optical field and reduce the loss simultaneously. The waveguide dimensions are optimized to obtain a figure of merit as high as 0.55 at 2.1 mu m and a zero-dispersion wavelength of 2.06 mu m. In a 6.6-mm-long waveguide, a maximum four-wave mixing efficiency of -6.65 dB and a bandwidth of 512 nm (1.894-2.406 mu m) can be simultaneously obtained, pumped by a 2.104-mu m source with a power of only 500 mW. Our designed waveguide exhibits excellent overall performance for nonlinear optical applications such as all-optical signal processing in the MIR band. (C) 2018 Optical Society of America

Abstract:The strong dispersion and large third-order nonlinearity in Si photonic wires are intimately linked in the optical physics needed for the optical control of phase. By carefully choosing the waveguide dimensions, both linear and nonlinear optical properties of Si wires can be engineered. In this paper we provide a review of the control of phase using nonlinear-optical effects such as self-phase and cross-phase modulation in dispersion-engineered Si wires. The low threshold powers for phase-changing effects in Si-wires make them potential candidates for functional nonlinear optical devices of just a few millimeters in length.

Abstract:We demonstrate the generation of a supercontinuum in a 2 cm long silicon wire by pumping the wire with mid-infrared picosecond pulses in the anomalous dispersion regime. The supercontinuum extends from 1535 nm up to 2525 nm for a coupled peak power of 12.7 W. It is shown that the supercontinuum originates primarily from the amplification of background noise. A detailed analysis of the spectral components which are generated through phase-matched processes is applied to extract the group velocity dispersion and fourth-order dispersion coefficient of the silicon wire waveguide.

Abstract:Micro-photonic devices with Si-wire waveguides were demonstrated for use in photonic networks. An optical ring resonator with the waveguides which has extremely small ring radius realized large free-spectral range. An optical add/drop multiplexer which is as small as 700-mu m-long attained 7nm wavelength tuning range with micro-heaters formed on the device. 1 x 4, 1 x 8 and 4 x 4 optical switches were also demonstrated with extremely compact sizes.

Abstract:Novel photonic nanowires are fabricated using low‐index materials and their nonlinearities are tested in the near‐infrared spectrum. For device footprint in the range of 50–500 μm the components outperform all established platforms. For 85 fs pulses centered at 1480 nm, a spectral broadening exceeding 80% was recorded over a propagation length of just 50 μm with sub‐μW power levels. Novel photonic nanowires are fabricated using low‐index materials and tested in the near‐infrared spectrum to assess their nonlinear optical properties. In this work, the need to redefine the standard nonlinear figure of merit in terms of nonlinear phase shift and optical transmission for a given propagation distance is argued. According to this new metric, the devices largely outperform all established platforms for optical modules with a linear footprint in the range of 50–500 μm, which is demonstrated to be an outstanding technological gap. For 85 fs pulses, with carrier wavelength at 1480 nm and sub‐μW power levels, a spectral broadening exceeding 80% of the initial bandwidth was recorded over a propagation length of just 50 μm. Leveraging on CMOS‐compatible processes and well‐established materials such as silicon, silica, and indium tin oxide, the devices bring great promise for developing alternative all‐optical devices with unparalleled nonlinear performances within the aforementioned range.

Abstract:The nonlinear optics of Si photonic wires is discussed. The distinctive features of these waveguides are that they have extremely large third-order susceptibility chi((3)) and dispersive properties. The strong dispersion and large third-order nonlinearity in Si photonic wires cause the linear and nonlinear optical physics in these guides to be intimately linked. By carefully choosing the waveguide dimensions, both linear and nonlinear optical properties of Si wires can be engineered. We review the fundamental optical physics and emerging applications for these Si wires. In many cases, the relatively low threshold powers for nonlinear optical effects in these wires make them potential candidates for functional on-chip nonlinear optical devices of just a few millimeters in length; conversely, the absence of nonlinear optical impairment is important for the use of Si wires in on-chip interconnects. In addition, the characteristic length scales of linear and nonlinear optical effects in Si wires are markedly different from those in commonly used optical guiding systems, such as optical fibers or photonic crystal fibers, and therefore guiding structures based on Si wires represent ideal optical media for investigating new and intriguing physical phenomena.

Abstract:A silicon/silicon-rich nitride hybrid-core waveguide has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated for nonlinear applications to fill the gap between the pure silicon waveguide and the pure silicon nitride waveguide with respect to the nonlinear properties. The hybrid-core waveguide presented here leverages the advantages of the silicon and the silicon-rich nitride waveguide platforms, showing a large nonlinearity γ of 72 ± 5 W-1 m-1 for energy-efficient four-wave mixing wavelength conversion. At the same time, the drawbacks of the material platforms are dramatically mitigated, exhibiting a reduced two-photon absorption coefficient βTPA of 0.023 cm/GW resulting in an increased nonlinear figure-of-merit as large as 21.6. A four-wave-mixing conversion efficiency as large as -5.3 dB has been achieved with the promise to be larger than 0 dB. These findings are strong arguments supporting the silicon/silicon-rich nitride hybrid-core waveguide to be used for energy-efficient nonlinear photonic applications.
