Abstract:In the pulsed light time-of-flight (ToF) measurement, the timing point generated in the receiver channel is very important to the measurement accuracy. Therefore, a differential hysteresis timing discrimination method is proposed to generate timing points of the receiver channel. This method is based on utilizing the unbalanced characteristics of the fully differential operational amplifier circuit as well as introducing extra hysteresis levels to achieve the stable generation of timing points. With this method, fewer circuit components are consumed and the dynamic range of the receiver channel is not limited by its linear range. The experiments demonstrate that a receiver channel applying the proposed discrimination reaches better single shot accuracy compared to that using leading-edge timing discrimination. This method is also suitable for the timing walk error compensation by means of pulse width. Finally, these results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method in pulsed light ToF measurement.

Abstract:This paper presents a two-step coarse-fine time-to-digital converter (TDC) for ultrasonic flowmeter applications. To achieve a high resolution with a low frequency reference clock, a 7.7-MHz reference frequency is multiplied by 32 times using a multiplying delay-locked loop (MDLL) to generate a high-speed internal clock for coarse quantization. The resulting residual time error after coarse quantization is pulse-stretched and finely quantized. A cost-effective calibration scheme is proposed to ensure the PVT robustness of the pulse stretching circuit. The proposed TDC is realized in a 0.11μm/1.5V CMOS technology. It achieves a resolution of 5.6ps with a wide input range from 1 to 4255μs. The core TDC circuit occupies 0.065 mm and consumes 1.8mW. The measured differential nonlinearity and integral nonlinearity is ±3.1ps and ±59.7ps respectively.

Abstract:Temporal imaging is one of the important research issues of time lens. The theory of temporal imaging is investigated briefly. The experiment using electro-optic phase modulation to perform optical pulses compression is demonstrated. And the simulation and the discussion using electro-optic phase modulation and cross phase modulation to perform temporal imaging system are presented. The experimental results show that the temporal imaging system which consisits of time lens basing electro-optic phase modulation can effectively compress the optical pulses. However, the compression coefficient is restricted by the aperture of the time lens, and the resolution of the temporal imaging system is low. Further more, the simulation results and the analysis results indicate that the temporal imaging system which consists of time lens basing cross phase modulation has a bigger compression coefficient and a higher resolution. However, this temporal imaging system is difficult to realize.

Abstract:Optical Nyquist pulse generation based on a time lens with subsequent optical filtering is proposed. A nearly chirp-free 10-GHz 8.1-ps Nyquist pulse generator is experimentally demonstrated. By inserting group velocity dispersion (GVD) between cascaded phase and amplitude modulators, 11 tones ultraflat optical frequency comb (OFC) of 10-GHz frequency spacing within 0.9 dB power variation is obtained. The quasi-rectangular shape spectrum is then filtered out with a tunable rectangular-shaped optical band-pass filter (OBPF) and the quasi-linear chirp is compensated by a segment of standard single mode fiber (SSMF). By changing the wavelength of the continuous wave (CW) light, nearly chirp-free Nyquist pulses over C band are obtained. Abstract:Time-lens base optoelectronic oscillator was proposed. Simultaneous clock recovery and demultiplexing were demonstrated with 100-Gb/s OTDM signal. 25-GHz tributary clock with 122-fs timing jitter was obtained and error-free demultiplexing with a power penalty of 1.7 dB was achieved.

Abstract:We demonstrate a pedestal-free multi-wavelength pulse generator using a diverging time-lens. Wavelength assignment scheme is deployed to suppress the pedestal of different wavelengths simultaneously. Four-wavelength 25-GHz pulse trains with ∼3.8-ps pulsewidth are achieved experimentally.

Abstract:An approach to implement photonic-assisted time-interleaved analog-to-digital conversion and its calibration method are presented. The analog modulated optical signal is divided into M channels, suffering different time delay induced by optical delay lines which provide great flexibility in producing time intervals and is then sampled by electronic analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). The channel mismatches resulting in performance degradation are estimated by a modified sine wave fitting method. The time mismatch and other mismatches are corrected by fine optical delay adjustment and digital processing, respectively. A four-channel photonic-assisted time-interleaved analog-to-digital converter (TIADC) system operating at 40 GSa s(-1) was demonstrated experimentally. The photonic-assisted TIADC system was tested with a 6.31 GHz sine wave signal, exhibiting 40.3 dB signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SINAD) and 57.6 dBc spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR). It is shown that the SINAD is dominated by the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the analog optical link and the SFDR of the proposed system is limited by the linearity of the link.

Abstract:High-precision time-interval measurement is a fundamental technique in many advanced applications, including time and distance metrology, particle physics, and ultra-precision machining. However, many of these applications are confined by the imprecise time-interval measurement of electrical signals, restricting the performance of the ultimate system to a few picoseconds, which limits ultra-high-precision applications. Here, we demonstrate an optical means of the time-interval measurement of electrical signals that can successfully achieve femtosecond (fs)-level precision. The setup is established using the optical-frequency-comb (OFC)-based linear optical sampling technique to realize timescale-stretched measurement. We achieve the measurement precision of 82 fs for a single LOS scan measurement and 3.05 fs for the 100-times average with post-processing, which is three orders of magnitude higher than the results of older electrical methods. The high-precision time interval measurement of electrical signals can substantially improve precision measurement technologies.

Abstract:A tunable time delay for a 100-ps pulse is achieved via a SOA cascaded band-pass filter, which can be tailored by tuning the filter or changing the SOA injection current. For a single pulse, when the pulse propagates through the cascaded system, a delay of 99.6 ps and an advance of 42.6 ps can be achieved by altering the SOA injection current at two different wavelengths located in the red band and blue band of the filter, respectively. The corresponding tunable delay range is 165 ps, and the maximum delay-bandwidth product (DBP) is 1.65. For an optical sequence, to our knowledge, it is the first time that the time delay is tailored over 145.6 ps corresponding to a DBP of 1.46 by tuning the wavelength from 1556.075 to 1556.955 nm, and 45.2 ps (95.6 ps) advance (delay) by tuning the injection current from 100 to 500 mA at 1556.155 nm (1556.955 nm). The dependence of the time delay on the injection current and filtering configuration has been discussed based on plenty of experiments data. Based on SOA's fast switching, this device can be used for signal synchronization and bit-by-bit signal processing in a communication system.

Abstract:In recent years, some approaches to realize photonic analog-to-digital conversion based on spectral encoding have been proposed. In these approaches, the amplitude information of input analog signals is first converted into the frequency information of the optical carrier via a nonlinear process, which is equivalent to optical frequency modulation; then, the spectral information of the optical carrier is quantized and encoded with the help of an optical filter group. In this letter, we propose, for the first time to our knowledge, that the time-frequency uncertainty principle puts a fundamental limit on this type of photonic analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). The condition for achieving acceptable performance in terms of effective number of bits is discussed. The presented theoretical results are verified by numerical simulations and a proof-of-concept experiment in electrical domain. We believe that the presented result is important to the design of spectral-encoding-based photonic ADCs.

Abstract:A self-starting optoelectronic oscillator that employs a diverging time lens and a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) in a fiber-extended cavity to generate a multiwavelength ultrashort pulse train is demonstrated. The switching window formed by the MZM is narrowed by the use of a diverging time lens, which is a phase modulator in our study. A wavelength assignment scheme is deployed to simultaneously suppress the pedestals of pulses on different wavelengths. A detailed analysis is given, and the results are presented by experiment. We have generated 25 GHz optical pulses simultaneously on four wavelengths as a proof-of-concept demonstration. The pulse width of the optical pulse, the phase noise, and the timing jitter performance of the generated microwave signal are experimentally measured. Abstract:A novel Delta Sigma time-to-digital converter (TDC) with a time mode accumulator and a multi-bit quantizer is proposed in this work. Measurement time is reduced when compared with single-bit Delta Sigma TDCs. A time difference adder consisting of gated delay-line based time-registers is used to serve as the time accumulator. A dynamic element matching algorithm is implemented to mitigate the performance loss degraded by the non-linearity of the multi-bit quantizer. The TDC is designed and simulated using a 65nm CMOS process and operates at a 100MHz sampling rate. For a 1.25MHz bandwidth, 108fs(rms) integrated noise or 2.4ps equivalent resolution is achieved. The power consumption is only 0.45 mW and the figure of merit (FoM) is calculated to be 154fJ/step.

Abstract:Cross phase modulation based time lens and four-wave mixing based time lens are realized by utilizing cross phase modulation effect and four-wave mixing effect in the high nonlinear fiber,respectively.The nonlinear process in the high nonlinear fiber of cross phase modulation based time lens is simulated and analyzed.The simulation and the analysis show that the main influence factors are dispersion,self phase modulation and four-wave mixing,which can be eliminated by using the high nonlinear fiber with a certain amount of dispersion slope.Besides,the zero-dispersion wavelength of the high nonlinear fiber should be around the centre between the signal pulse and pump pulse.Then,the nonlinear process in the high nonlinear fiber of four-wave mixing based time lens is simulated and analyzed.The simulation and the analysis show that the main influence factors are dispersion,self phase modulation and other four-wave mixing,which can be eliminated by using the signal pulse and pump pulse with a certain amount of power.Besides,the powers of the signal pulse and the pump pulse can be improved by using the high non-linear fiber with a certain amount of dispersion, then the power of the output pulse can be improved,too.Finally,two kinds of time lenes are compared with each other.
A Time-to-Amplitude Converter With High Impedance Switch Topology for Single-Photon Time-of-Flight Measurement

Abstract:This paper presents a novel time-to-amplitude converter (TAC) for single-photon direct time-of-flight (d-TOF) measurement. An innovative high impedance switch approach is proposed to significantly improve the stability of the integral current and to increase the swing of the timing voltage, enabling high linearity together with low power consumption on TAC. Implemented in a standard $0.18~mu text{m}$ CMOS technology, the TAC occupies only an area of $100~mu text{m}^{2}$ , featuring a compact configuration. The experimental results indicate that the presented TAC can acquire a 78 ps timing resolution in a 20 ns full-scale range (FSR) under the supply of 1.8 V. In particular, the TAC gains an excellent linearity characteristic with the very low differential nonlinearity (DNL) and integral nonlinearity (INL) within ±0.1 LSB and ±0.15 LSB, respectively. Additionally, the extremely low dynamic power consumption of $20~mu text{W}$ and the high pixel fill factor of 16 % are also achieved simultaneously. Thanks to the outstanding advantages of high-performance and compactness, the proposed TAC may be a promising candidate to realize high-density compact TOF-based imagers.

Design of a High Speed Low Power Time-to-Digital Converter Based on Multi-stage Amplification Structure

Abstract:The authors present a time-to-digital converter based on multi-stage amplification structure. This structure consists of coarse stage and fine stage. Coarse stage utilizes delay line to get the residue which is less than a buffer’s delay. A small area and low power residue selecting logic is designed. In the fine stage, 2× time amplifier and half judger is utilized to generate 4 binary codes from MSB to LSB. Simulation in SMIC 65 nm process shows that the new structure has a high conversion speed up to 470 MS/s and power consumption is 1.3 m W at 100 MHz with the resolution of 1.44 ps and range of 736 ps. An accurate gain robust to PVT variation can be achieved with the calibration of the time amplifier, so a good integral nonlinearity is obtained.
