Abstract:A linearization scheme based on two cascaded intensity modulators is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. By optimizing the biases, the power ratio and the phase difference between the drive signals applied to the two Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZMs), the third-order intermodulation distortion (IMD3) can be effectively eliminated over a wide operating bandwidth of 1 to 12 GHz without the same RF phase at two modulators, which is required in previous works. The ratio of the fundamental output to the IMD3 reaches 50.21 to 63.28 dB, which has an improvement of 18.35 to 31.42 dB compared to that of a single MZM link. Abstract:Optical lattices have several applications including super-resolution imaging, lithography, and light-tweezers. Compared with the conventional multibeam interference method, optical lattices in a tightly focused light fields are presented by cylindrical vector polarization illumination and multisector amplitude modulation. The polarization and phase difference of the illumination beam, including the size and relative position of the sectors, were analyzed using the vector diffraction theory. The obtained results indicate that the primitive cell shape of optical lattices can be controlled by the polarization direction of the illumination beam when the relative positions of sectors in the amplitude modulation mask are set. In addition, the period and primitive cell shape of optical lattices with hyper or complex constructions can be controlled by the relative positions of sectors, while the optical lattice zone primarily depends on the sector size. By combining polarization and amplitude modulation in a high numerical aperture optical system, these engineered optical lattices are potentially beneficial in expanding their applications.

Abstract:Temporal imaging is one of the important research issues of time lens. The theory of temporal imaging is investigated briefly. The experiment using electro-optic phase modulation to perform optical pulses compression is demonstrated. And the simulation and the discussion using electro-optic phase modulation and cross phase modulation to perform temporal imaging system are presented. The experimental results show that the temporal imaging system which consisits of time lens basing electro-optic phase modulation can effectively compress the optical pulses. However, the compression coefficient is restricted by the aperture of the time lens, and the resolution of the temporal imaging system is low. Further more, the simulation results and the analysis results indicate that the temporal imaging system which consists of time lens basing cross phase modulation has a bigger compression coefficient and a higher resolution. However, this temporal imaging system is difficult to realize.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a parallel phase-only lensless optical correlator based on two pieces of Liquid Crystal on Silicon Spatial Light Modulators. Phase Fresnel Lens Array and specialized grating are implemented to realize multi-channel and multiplexed LOC. Experimental results of Chinese characters' recognitions are given as demonstration of proposed technique. High uniformity of processing channels has been verified by autocorrelation process of four same Chinese characters. The technique is programmable and adjustment of optical path could be realized without changing of optical setup. The implementations could be performed on the same configuration as single channel optical correlator without mechanical alternation.
An Optical Zoom System Based on Tunable Lens with Polymer Membrane and Multilayered Structure

Abstract:We have developed an optical zoom system based on tunable lens with polymer membrane and multilayered structure. The presented system employed two tunable lenses and two doublet lenses as the main refractive units. Each tunable lens had a delicately designed, solid-liquid mixed structure with multiple internal slim holes, which helped to improve the lens optical properties and stability against gravity. The optical structure and regulation principle of the zoom system is presented, as well as the detailed fabrication process of the tunable lens. Under different displacement loads, the lens deformation properties, and the adjustment ability and imaging characteristics of the zoom system were measured and analyzed. Besides, the spot diagram, field curvature and distortion of the system were simulated using the Zemax software. The magnification of the designed system could be regulated from 0.2X to 4.3X flexibly depending on the focal variation of each tunable lens.

Abstract:Cross phase modulation based time lens and four-wave mixing based time lens are realized by utilizing cross phase modulation effect and four-wave mixing effect in the high nonlinear fiber,respectively.The nonlinear process in the high nonlinear fiber of cross phase modulation based time lens is simulated and analyzed.The simulation and the analysis show that the main influence factors are dispersion,self phase modulation and four-wave mixing,which can be eliminated by using the high nonlinear fiber with a certain amount of dispersion slope.Besides,the zero-dispersion wavelength of the high nonlinear fiber should be around the centre between the signal pulse and pump pulse.Then,the nonlinear process in the high nonlinear fiber of four-wave mixing based time lens is simulated and analyzed.The simulation and the analysis show that the main influence factors are dispersion,self phase modulation and other four-wave mixing,which can be eliminated by using the signal pulse and pump pulse with a certain amount of power.Besides,the powers of the signal pulse and the pump pulse can be improved by using the high non-linear fiber with a certain amount of dispersion, then the power of the output pulse can be improved,too.Finally,two kinds of time lenes are compared with each other.

Abstract:Previous methods for the generation of accelerating beams are mostly based on bulky phase-only spatial light modulator. Here we propose an experimental scheme for the generation of accelerating beams by fabricating a quartz plate capable of realizing both phase and amplitude modulation. The phase modulation is implemented by aligned 16-level etching into the quartz plate, while the amplitude modulation is realized by controlling the duty ratio of the partial metal coverage locally. Based on this approach, a sinusoidal accelerating beam with multiple bending is generated for demonstration and propagates along a sinusoidal trajectory as expected.

Abstract:Spectral-temporal shaping of quantum light has important applications in quantum communications and photonic quantum information processing. Electro-optic temporal lenses have recently been recognized as a tool for noise-free, efficient spectral bandwidth manipulation of single-photon wavepackets. However, standard electro-optic time lenses based on single-tone modulation exhibit limited bandwidth manipulation due to material limitations on phase modulation amplitude. Here we numerically investigate the use of complex electro-optic temporal phase modulation patterns for bandwidth compression of light over multiple orders of magnitude and show the feasibility of their use in photonic interfaces for quantum network applications.

Abstract:The demand for low-cost, high-performance miniaturized optical imaging systems requires creating a new imaging paradigm. In this paper, we propose an imaging paradigm that achieves diffraction-limited imaging with a non-imaging spatial information transfer lens. The spatial information transfer lens realizes a perfect match between the space-bandwidth product (SBP) of the lens and that of the image sensor so that the collected spatial information from the object can be totally recorded and fully resolved by the image sensor. A backward wave propagation model is developed to reconstruct the object by propagating the light wave modulated by the information transfer lens back from the image space to object space. The proposed imaging paradigm breaks the point-to-point imaging structure and removes the focusing-distance constraint, allowing a flexible arrangement of the object and the image sensor along the optical axis with a compact form factor of the optical system. We experimentally demonstrate the versatility and effectiveness of the proposed imaging paradigm. The proposed imaging paradigm is low-cost, simple in configuration, flexible in arrangement, and diffraction limited with great potential applications in biomedical imaging. Abstract:Manipulating the frequency and bandwidth of nonclassical light is essential for implementing frequency-encoded/ multiplexed quantum computation, communication, and networking protocols, and for bridging spectral mismatch among various quantum systems. However, quantum spectral control requires a strong nonlinearity mediated by light, microwave, or acoustics, which is challenging to realize with high efficiency, low noise, and on an integrated chip. Here, we demonstrate both frequency shifting and bandwidth compression of heralded single-photon pulses using an integrated thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) phase modulator. We achieve record-high electro-optic frequency shearing of telecom single photons over terahertz range (+/- 641 GHz or +/- 5.2 nm), enabling high visibility quantum interference between frequency-nondegenerate photon pairs. We further operate the modulator as a time lens and demonstrate over eighteen-fold (6.55 nm to 0.35 nm) bandwidth compression of single photons. Our results showcase the viability and promise of on-chip quantum spectral control for scalable photonic quantum information processing.
A Low Power Threshold, Ultrathin Optical Limiter Based on a Nonlinear Zone Plate

Abstract:Ultrathin optical limiters are needed to protect light sensitive components in miniaturized optical systems. However, it has proven challenging to achieve a sufficiently low optical limiting threshold. In this work, we theoretically show that an ultrathin optical limiter with low threshold intensity can be realized using a nonlinear zone plate. The zone plate is embedded with nonlinear saturable absorbing materials that allow the device to focus low intensity light, while high intensity light is transmitted as a plane wave without a focal spot. Based on this proposed mechanism, we use the finite-difference time-domain method to computationally design a zone plate embedded with InAs quantum dots as the saturable absorbing material. The device has a thickness of just 0.5 $\mu m$ and exhibits good optical limiting behavior with a threshold intensity as low as 0.45 kW/$cm^2$, which is several orders of magnitude lower than current ultrathin flat-optics-based optical limiters. This design can be optimized for different operating wavelengths and threshold intensities by using different saturable absorbing materials. Additionally, the diameter and focal length of the nonlinear zone plate can be easily adjusted to fit different systems and applications. Due to its flexible design, low power threshold, and ultrathin thickness, this optical limiting concept may be promising for application in miniaturized optical systems.

Abstract:Landau-Zener tunneling (LZT), i.e., the nonadiabatic transition under strong parameter driving in multilevel systems, is ubiquitous in physics, providing a powerful tool for coherent wave control both in quantum and classical systems. While previous works mainly focus on LZT between two energy bands in time-invariant crystals, here, we construct synthetic time-periodic temporal lattices from two coupled fiber loops and demonstrate dc- and ac-driven LZTs between periodic Floquet bands. We show that dc- and ac-driven LZTs display distinctive tunneling and interference characteristics, which can be harnessed to realize fully reconfigurable LZT beam splitter arrangements. As a potential application to signal processing, we realize a 4-bit temporal beam encoder for classical light pulses using a reconfigurable LZT beam splitter network. Our work introduces and experimentally demonstrates a new class of reconfigurable linear optics circuits harnessing Floquet LZT, which may find versatile applications in temporal beam control, signal processing, quantum simulations, and information processing.

Single Pulse Manipulations in Synthetic Time-frequency Space

Abstract:Synthetic dimensions in photonic structures provide unique opportunities for actively manipulating light in multiple degrees of freedom. Here, we theoretically explore a dispersive waveguide under the dynamic phase modulation that supports single pulse manipulations in the synthetic (2+1) dimensions. Compared with the counterpart of the conventional (2+1) space-time, we explore temporal diffraction and frequency conversion in a synthetic time-frequency space while the pulse evolves along the spatial dimension. By introducing the effective gauge potential well for photons in the synthetic time-frequency space with the control of the modulation phase, we show that a rich set of pulse propagation behaviors can be achieved, including confined pulse propagation, fast/slow light, and pulse compression. With the additional nonlinear oscillation subject to the effective force along the frequency axis of light, we provide an exotic approach for actively manipulating the single pulse in both temporal and spectral domains, which shows the great promise for applications of the pulse processing and optical communications in integrated photonics.

Abstract:Efficient phase manipulation of light is the cornerstone of many advanced photonic applications 1 – 4 . However, the pursuit of compact, broadband and deep phase control of light has been hindered by the finite nonlinearity of the optical materials available for integrated photonics 5 , 6 . Here, we propose a dynamically driven photonic structure for deep phase manipulation and coherent spectrotemporal control of light based on distributed nanomechanics. We experimentally demonstrate the quasi-phase-matched interaction between stationary mechanical vibration and itinerant optical fields, which is used to generate an on-chip modulated frequency comb over 1.15 THz (160 lines), corresponding to a phase modulation depth of over 21.6π. In addition, an optical time-lens effect induced by mechanical vibration is realized, leading to optical pulse compression of over 70-fold to obtain a minimum pulse duration of 1.02 ps. The high efficiency and versatility make such mechanically driven dynamic photonic structures ideal for realizing complex optical control schemes, such as lossless non-reciprocity 7 , frequency division optical communication 1 and optical frequency comb division 8 .

Abstract:We propose a linear compression technique for the time interval distribution of photon pairs. Using a partially frequency-entangled two-photon (TP) state with appropriate mean time width, the compressed TP time interval width can be kept in the minimum limit set by the phase modulation, and is independent of its initial width. As a result of this effect, ultra-narrow TP time interval distribution can be compressed with relatively slow phase modulators to decrease the damage of the phase-instability arising from the phase modulation process.
