Abstract:We review recent work on incoherent-light temporal imaging of intensity waveforms (e.g., high-speed microwave signals). In a relevant example, we create a temporal pinhole camera to demonstrate temporal magnification (stretching) of microwave waveforms modulated on incoherent light, obtaining a magnification factor of 2.86, with a resolution of ∼50 ps over a temporal aperture of ∼8 ns, totally avoiding the use of chirp-controlled pulsed lasers.

Abstract:Temporal imaging is one of the important research issues of time lens. The theory of temporal imaging is investigated briefly. The experiment using electro-optic phase modulation to perform optical pulses compression is demonstrated. And the simulation and the discussion using electro-optic phase modulation and cross phase modulation to perform temporal imaging system are presented. The experimental results show that the temporal imaging system which consisits of time lens basing electro-optic phase modulation can effectively compress the optical pulses. However, the compression coefficient is restricted by the aperture of the time lens, and the resolution of the temporal imaging system is low. Further more, the simulation results and the analysis results indicate that the temporal imaging system which consists of time lens basing cross phase modulation has a bigger compression coefficient and a higher resolution. However, this temporal imaging system is difficult to realize.

Abstract:We report and demonstrate a reconfigurable photonic anamorphic stretch transform to realize time-bandwidth product (TBP) compression for microwave signals. A time-spectrum convolution system is employed to provide an ultra-high nonlinear dispersion up to several nanoseconds per gigahertz, which is required for processing nanosecond-long microwave signals. The group delay of the system can be engineered easily by programming a WaveShaper. Based on the proposed scheme, the TBP of a double pulse microwave signal is compressed by 1.9 times. Our proposal can provide a more efficient way to sample, digitize and store high-speed microwave signals, opening up entirely new perspectives for generation of many critical microwave signal processing modules.

Abstract:Temporal imaging is one of the most promising all-optical signal processing techniques that enable single-shot ultrafast signal characterization in both spectral and temporal domains. However, conventional temporal imaging systems have inherent constraints such as limited record length, narrow spectral observation range and complex system configuration, which prevent their potential to be fully unleashed. In this article, we review the recent efforts in developing advanced temporal imaging systems with much enhanced performance. Their powerful applications are demonstrated by real-time single-shot characterization of Kerr soliton generation in microresonator, noise-like pulses in mode-locked fiber lasers, broadband frequency combs and the dynamic waveform in ultrafast optical tomography. In addition, potential future developments of this technique in several important directions are discussed.

Abstract:A concept for single-frequency microwave imaging using orbital angular momentum (OAM) carrying wave is introduced. The orthogonality of OAM waves, which is well suited for compressed sensing, enables the reconstruction of a sparse scene with limited measurements. A traveling wave circular slot antenna is demonstrated to generate the OAM carrying wave theoretically and experimentally. Using a set of illumination patterns radiated from the designed OAM antennas as the measurement modes, the echo signals versus OAM modes are acquired and the scene is reconstructed based on computational imaging methods. This microwave imaging scheme is verified by a proof-of-principle experiment at a single frequency without mechanical scanning or beam-forming technologies.

Abstract:The demand for low-cost, high-performance miniaturized optical imaging systems requires creating a new imaging paradigm. In this paper, we propose an imaging paradigm that achieves diffraction-limited imaging with a non-imaging spatial information transfer lens. The spatial information transfer lens realizes a perfect match between the space-bandwidth product (SBP) of the lens and that of the image sensor so that the collected spatial information from the object can be totally recorded and fully resolved by the image sensor. A backward wave propagation model is developed to reconstruct the object by propagating the light wave modulated by the information transfer lens back from the image space to object space. The proposed imaging paradigm breaks the point-to-point imaging structure and removes the focusing-distance constraint, allowing a flexible arrangement of the object and the image sensor along the optical axis with a compact form factor of the optical system. We experimentally demonstrate the versatility and effectiveness of the proposed imaging paradigm. The proposed imaging paradigm is low-cost, simple in configuration, flexible in arrangement, and diffraction limited with great potential applications in biomedical imaging. Abstract:In this letter, we present a novel approach to realizing photonics-assisted compressive sensing (CS) with the technique of microwave photonic filtering. In the proposed system, an input spectrally sparse signal to be captured and a random sequence are modulated on an optical carrier via two Mach–Zehnder modulators (MZMs). Therefore, the mixing process (the signal to be captured mixing with the random sequence) is realized in the optical domain. The mixed optical signal then propagates through a length of dispersive fiber. As the double-sideband modulation in a dispersive optical link leads to a frequency-dependent power fading, low-pass filtering required in the CS is then realized. A proof-of-concept experiment for compressive sampling and recovery of a signal containing three tones at 310MHz, 1GHz and 2GHz with a compression factor up to 10 is successfully demonstrated. More simulation results are also presented to recover signals within wider bandwidth and with more frequency components.

Abstract:Fast microscopic imaging has greatly potential applications in biology, medical science and environment monitoring. The ability to image specimen at high speed is particularly important for inspecting a large quantity in a short period of time. CCD or CMOS cameras are conventionally used for imaging, but has limited frame rate and data throughput. In this report, time-stretch high-speed microscopic imaging systems based on temporally and spectrally shaped incoherent optical source are proposed and experimentally demonstrated. We significantly reduced the complexity of the light source by applying multi-wavelength source or amplified spontaneous noise emission (ASE) in the time-stretch microscopic imaging system. Further-more, by preprocessing the broadband spectrum, the resolution of the proposed system is better than 35 µm and the effective 1D scan rate could reach 50 MHz to 2GHz.

Abstract:An approach to realizing microwave spectrum sensing based on photonic time stretch and compressive sampling is proposed. The time stretch system is used to slow down the input high-speed signal and the compressive sampling based on random demodulation can further decrease the sampling rate. A spectrally sparse signal in a wide bandwidth can be captured with a sampling rate far lower than the Nyquist rate thanks to both time stretch and compressive sampling. It is demonstrated that a system with a time stretch factor 5 and a compression factor 8 can be used to capture a signal with multiple tones in a 50 GHz bandwidth, which means a sampling rate 40 times lower than the Nyquist rate. In addition, the time stretch of the microwave signal largely decreases the data rate of random data sequence and therefore the speed of the mixer in the random demodulator.

Abstract:Ghost imaging in the time domain allows for reconstructing fast temporal objects using a slow photodetector. The technique involves correlating random or pre-programmed probing temporal intensity patterns with the integrated signal measured after modulation by the temporal object. However, the implementation of temporal ghost imaging necessitates ultrafast detectors or modulators for measuring or pre-programming the probing intensity patterns, which are not available in all spectral regions especially in the mid-infrared range. Here, we demonstrate a frequency downconversion temporal ghost imaging scheme that enables to extend the operation regime to arbitrary wavelengths regions where fast modulators and detectors are not available. The approach modulates a signal with temporal intensity patterns in the near-infrared and transfers the patterns to an idler via difference-frequency generation in a nonlinear crystal at a wavelength where the temporal object can be retrieved. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate computational temporal ghost imaging in the mid-infrared with operating wavelength that can be tuned from 3.2 to 4.3 μm. The scheme is flexible and can be extended to other regimes. Our results introduce new possibilities for scan-free pump-probe imaging and the study of ultrafast dynamics in spectral regions where ultrafast modulation or detection is challenging such as the mid-infrared and THz regions.

Abstract:We present theoretical formulation and experimental demonstration of a novel technique for the fast compression-less terahertz imaging based on the broadband Fourier optics. The technique exploits k-vector/frequency duality in Fourier optics which allows using a single-pixel detector to perform angular scan along a circular path, while the broadband spectrum is used to scan along the radial dimension in Fourier domain. The proposed compression-less image reconstruction technique (hybrid inverse transform) requires only a small number of measurements that scales linearly with the image linear size, thus promising real-time acquisition of high-resolution THz images. Additionally, our imaging technique handles equally well and on the equal theoretical footing the amplitude contrast and the phase contrast images, which makes this technique useful for many practical applications. A detailed analysis of the novel technique advantages and limitations is presented, as well as its place among other existing THz imaging techniques is clearly identified

Abstract:Light transport has been analyzed extensively, in both the primal domain and the frequency domain. Frequency analyses often provide intuition regarding effects introduced by light propagation and interaction with optical elements; such analyses encourage optimal designs of computational cameras that efficiently capture tailored visual information. However, previous analyses have relied on instantaneous propagation of light, so that the measurement of the time dynamics of light–scene interaction, and any resulting information transfer, is precluded. In this paper, we relax the common assumption that the speed of light is infinite. We analyze free space light propagation in the frequency domain considering spatial, temporal, and angular light variation. Using this analysis, we derive analytic expressions for information transfer between these dimensions and show how this transfer can be exploited for designing a new lensless imaging system. With our frequency analysis, we also derive performance bounds for the proposed computational camera architecture and provide a mathematical framework that will also be useful for future ultra-fast computational imaging systems.

Abstract:Ghost imaging allows the imaging of an object without directly seeing this object. Originally demonstrated in the spatial domain, it was recently shown that ghost imaging can be transposed into the time domain to detect ultrafast signals, even in the presence of distortion. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a temporal ghost imaging scheme which generates a 5× magnified ghost image of an ultrafast waveform. Inspired by shadow imaging in the spatial domain and building on the dispersive Fourier transform of an incoherent supercontinuum in an optical fiber, the approach overcomes the resolution limit of standard time-domain ghost imaging generally imposed by the detectors speed. The method can be scaled up to higher magnification factors using longer fiber lengths and light source with shorter duration.

Abstract:Spectral-temporal shaping of quantum light has important applications in quantum communications and photonic quantum information processing. Electro-optic temporal lenses have recently been recognized as a tool for noise-free, efficient spectral bandwidth manipulation of single-photon wavepackets. However, standard electro-optic time lenses based on single-tone modulation exhibit limited bandwidth manipulation due to material limitations on phase modulation amplitude. Here we numerically investigate the use of complex electro-optic temporal phase modulation patterns for bandwidth compression of light over multiple orders of magnitude and show the feasibility of their use in photonic interfaces for quantum network applications.

Abstract:Serial time-encoded amplified microscopy can achieve ultrafast imaging speed within varied dynamic regimes. However, it has two challenges: the high-throughput data issue and low-efficiency diffraction issue. Here, we report a compact and highly efficient ultrafast optical imaging system based on compressive sensing and in-fiber grating. Our proposal is confirmed by the proof-of-principle experiment and obtains a minimum data compression ratio of 5% with a continuous ultrafast imaging speed of 10 Mfps at a field of view of 0.5 mm ${}^{\ast} 1.6$ mm. A barcode with a moving speed of 4m/s is also demonstrated for imaging and an imaging speed of 1.25 Mfps is obtained. The proposed optical imaging system overcomes the big data issue, increases energy efficiency, and paves the way for compact and highly efficient ultrafast optical imaging within dynamic scenarios.

Abstract:Light is a key information carrier, enabling worldwide high-speed data transmission through a telecommunication fibre network. This information-carrying capacity can be extended to transmitting quantum information (QI) by encoding it in single photons -- flying qubits. However, various QI-processing platforms operate at vastly different timescales. QI-processing units in atomic media, operating within nanosecond to microsecond timescales, and high-speed quantum communication, at picosecond timescales, cannot be efficiently linked due to orders of magnitude mismatch in the timescales or, correspondingly, spectral linewidths. In this work, we develop a large-aperture time lens using complex high-bandwidth electro-optic phase modulation to bridge this gap. We demonstrate coherent, deterministic spectral bandwidth compression of quantum light pulses by more than two orders of magnitude with high efficiency. It will facilitate large-scale hybrid QI-processing by linking the ultrafast and quasi-continuous-wave experimental platforms, which until now, to a large extent, have been developing independently.
