Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) is a promising complementary technology to its radio frequency (RF) counterpart. Heterogeneous VLC-WiFi systems offer a solution for future indoor communications that combines VLC to support high data rate transmission and RF to support reliable connectivity. In such heterogeneous systems, vertical handover (VHO) is critical for improving the system performance. This paper investigates an efficient VHO scheme. We formulate it as a Markov decision process problem and adopt a dynamic approach to obtain a tradeoff between the switching cost and the delay requirement. The proposed scheme determines whether to perform VHO given the queue length and the condition of the optical wireless channel (available or unavailable). The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme is able to save about 50% of the signaling cost of the VHO process without an obvious loss in system performance. Moreover, the proposed scheme is adaptable to different scenarios.

Abstract:In the development of integrating various heterogeneous wireless access networks, handoff decision is regarded as an important and challenging issue. In this paper, we propose a handoff decision algorithm considering both the link reward of multipath parallel transmission and the handoff cost between different management domains. The model of Markov decision process is used to determine the optimal handoff policy, with the objective of maximizing the expected total reward during the transmission. Compare with other algorithms that only consider the link reward, the proposed algorithm has a higher expected total reward and a lower expected number of handoffs.

Abstract:Vertical handoff is the switching process of a multi-interface mobile host between heterogeneous wireless networks. There have been many researches focusing on policy-enabled vertical handoff decision schemes, but no technical details on handoff metric acquisition are provided in most of them. In this paper, we introduce the MAC layer sensing technique, which is designed to estimate the handoff metrics in IEEE 802.11 WLAN (wireless local area network), into the policy-enabled decision schemes. Furthermore, we improve the existing adaptive schemes for stability period prediction, making use of the handoff metrics obtained from MAC layer sensing. Simulation results show that the proposed adaptive decision scheme outperforms the previous schemes in terms of sensitivity of stability period adjusting and ability to avoid unnecessary handoffs

Abstract:The visible light communication (VLC) and wireless LAN (WLAN) heterogeneous network is considered as a highly competitive candidate for the next generation indoor wireless communication. VLC can provide high data rate as downlink mechanism while WLAN supports reliable connectivity and covers uplink needs. In such heterogeneous systems, vertical handover (VHO) is critical for the system reliability and performance. This paper proposes an improved design of the dwell timer used in VHO process by introducing a dynamic dwell timer based on prediction. Simulation results show that the proposed design outperforms benchmark designs by avoiding unwise handovers while achieving a longer connection time and higher average data rate. Simulations also prove that the proposed design is applicable to different environments and user behaviors.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) is a promising complementary technology to its radio frequency (RF) counterpart to satisfy the high quality-of-service (QoS) requirements of intelligent vehicular communications by reusing LED street lights. In this paper, a hybrid handover scheme for vehicular VLC/RF communication networks is proposed to balance QoS and handover costs by considering the vertical handover and horizontal handover together judging from the mobile state of the vehicle. A Markov decision process (MDP) is formulated to describe this hybrid handover problem, with a cost function balancing the handover consumption, delay, and reliability. A value iteration algorithm was applied to solve the optimal handover policy. The simulation results demonstrated the performance of the proposed hybrid handover scheme in comparison to other benchmark schemes.

Abstract:In many vertical handoff decision algorithms, various factors, such as the received signal strength, the available bandwidth, monetary cost, residual battery and so on, need to be taken into account to make a handoff decision. Among different kinds of vertical handoff decision (VHD) schemes, fuzzy-logic-based VHD algorithm has an advantage in dealing with incomplete and uncertain information. However, the computational complexity of fuzzy-logic-based VHD method follows an exponential increase with the number of input parameters, which limits its practicability. In this paper, a low-complexity fuzzy-logic-control-based (FLC-based) VHD algorithm is proposed for heterogeneous wireless networks. In proposed FLC-based VHD algorithm, a technique on the basis of rough set theory is put forward to reduce fuzzy logic decision rules and select core parameters as input criteria. Using these core parameters in fuzzy logic controller, the value of access network candidacy is estimated. And VHD is made based on access network candidacy. Simulation results show that the proposed low-complexity FLC-based VHD algorithm can dramatically reduce the handoff decision time, as well as achieve almost the same network selection performance compared to the original FLC-based VHD algorithm, and better network selection performance compared to the FLC-based VHD algorithm with the same number of input parameters.

Abstract:The heterogeneity is one of the key characteristics of the future wireless networks. How to provide terminal users with the best connection anytime and anywhere become more important. In this paper, a vertical handoff decision algorithm for the heterogeneous wireless networks is proposed based on the Markov Decision Process (MDP). First the factors which determine the choices of the wireless networks is discussed in detail. Then the problem is resolved by a Markov decision process with the objective of maximizing the total expected reward per connection. The analytic hierarchy process is used to assign the weight to the reward from every attribute such as the power, mobility, energy etc. The numerical simulations of two different scenes shows that the proposed algorithm can effectively reduce switching times and improve the performance of our algorithm.

Abstract:Fast and seamless handover are weighty issues in 3G systems. Based on UMTS and WLAN Converging architecture, a joint vertical handover decision strategy (jVHOD) was proposed for heterogeneous wireless networks. Also, several significant metrics were evaluated through a vertical handover performance model, which was validated by computer simulation. The analytical results showed that jVHOD had better performance than the conventional in terms of the number of handoffs and available bandwidth, but a little longer packet delay. To design optimal vertical handover strategies the application requirement threshold should be properly adjusted by an appropriate trade-off of related handover performance metrics.

Abstract:In this paper, a User Mobility Pattern based Vertical Handoff Decision algorithm (UMP-VHD) in Cellular-WLAN Integrated Networks is proposed. In this algorithm, vertical handoff decision is formulated as a Markov Decision Process (MDP) with the objective of maximizing the total expected reward during a connection. A sequence of Received Signal Strength (RSS) history records of WLANs is defined as a part of state in MDP and the transitions between different states represent user mobility patterns relative to specific WLANs. Simulation results show that our method successfully reduces call-dropping probability and obtains higher rewards.

Abstract:The limitation of indoor visible light coverage and the attenuation of its signal when propagating in line-of-sight has seriously affected the stable communication of receiving devices when users move randomly and also aggravated the power consumption of visible light networking systems. According to the above situation, on the basis of the heterogeneous networking of visible light communication (VLC) and RF communication integration, this article proposes a horizontal–vertical collaborative handover strategy based on the communication blind area dwell time (CBD-HVHO). Combining asymmetrically clipped optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ACO-OFDM) technology with networking handover technology, ACO-OFDM is used to determine the indoor communication blind area by calculating the bit error rate (BER) value at the signal receiver while reducing the multipath interference generated by visible light signals during channel transmission. To achieve this, set the communication blind channel interruption time as the threshold time, compare the communication blind area dwell time with the threshold time, and finally combine the horizontal and vertical collaborative handover strategies based on the communication blind area dwell time. The simulation results show that the handover probability is 0.009, the average number of handovers is 1.006, and the average network throughput is 195.2826 Mbps. Compared with the previously proposed immediate vertical handover (I-VHO) scheme and the dwell vertical handover (D-VHO) scheme, the communication stability is significantly improved, and the power consumption of the network system is reduced to a certain extent.

Abstract:Indoor wireless communication networking has received significant attention along with the growth of indoor data traffc. VLC (Visible Light Communication) as a novel wireless communication technology with the advantages of a high data rate, license-free spectrum and safety provides a practical solution for the indoor high-speed transmission of large data traffc. However, limited coverage is an inherent feature of VLC. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid VLC-Wi-Fi system that integrates multiple links to achieve an indoor high-speed wide-coverage network combined with multiple access, a multi-path transmission control protocol, mobility management and cell handover. Furthermore, we develop a hybrid network experiment platform, the experimental results of which show that the hybrid VLC-Wi-Fi network outperforms both single VLC and Wi-Fi networks with better coverage and greater network capacity.

Abstract:We propose a novel vertical handoff scheme with the support of the software-defined networking technique for heterogeneous wireless networks. The proposed scheme solves two important issues in vertical handoff: network selection and handoff timing. In this paper, the network selection is formulated as a 0-1 integer programming problem, which maximizes the sum of channel capacities that handoff users can obtain from their new access points. After the network selection process is finished, a user will wait for a time period. Only if the new access point is consistently more appropriate than the current access point during this time period, will the user transfer its inter-network connection to the new access point. Our proposed scheme ensures that a user will transfer to the most appropriate access point at the most appropriate time. Comprehensive simulation has been conducted. Abstract:In heterogeneous wireless network, vertical handoff plays an important role for guaranteeing quality of service and overall performance of network. Conventional vertical handoff trigger schemes are mostly developed from horizontal handoff in homogeneous cellular network. Basically, they can be summarized as hysteresis-based and dwelling-timer-based algorithms, which are reliable on avoiding unnecessary handoff caused by the terminals dwelling at the edge of WLAN coverage. However, the coverage of WLAN is much smaller compared with cellular network, while the motion types of terminals can be various in a typical outdoor scenario. As a result, traditional algorithms are less effective in avoiding unnecessary handoff triggered by vehicle-borne terminals with various speeds. Besides that, hysteresis and dwelling-timer thresholds usually need to be modified to satisfy different channel environments. For solving this problem, a vertical handoff algorithm based on Q-learning is proposed in this paper. Q-learning can provide the decider with self-adaptive ability for handling the terminals' handoff requests with different motion types and channel conditions. Meanwhile, Neural Fuzzy Inference System (NFIS) is embedded to retain a continuous perception of the state space. Simulation results verify that the proposed algorithm can achieve lower unnecessary handoff probability compared with the other two conventional algorithms.

Abstract:In order to solve the problem of IMS heterogeneous wireless networks handoff delay,an integration resolution of IEEE 802.21-defined Media Independent Handover(MIH) and IMS architechture is proposed.An algorithm of Markov Decision Process(MDP) based multipath redundant transmission handover is presented,through which seamless handover in IMS is realized.NS-2 simulation results prove that the algorithm compared with the traditional vertical handover algorithm,the effective data transmission rate,handover times and handover stability show a clear advantage.

Abstract:Wireless networking is becoming an increasingly important and popular way of providing global information access to users on the move. One of the main challenges for seamless mobility is the availability of simple and robust vertical handoff algorithms, which allow a mobile node to roam among heterogeneous wireless networks. In this paper, motivated by the facts that vertical handoff procedure is done on mobile nodes and battery power may be one crucial parameter for certain mobile nodes, a simple and robust two-step vertical handoff decision algorithm is proposed for heterogeneous wireless mobile networks. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first vertical handoff algorithm that takes the classification of mobile nodes into consideration, one is resource-poor mobile nodes, and the other is resource-rich mobile nodes. This new feature makes it more applicable in the real world. In addition, dynamic new call blocking probability is firstly introduced by this paper to make handoff decision for wireless networks. The experiment results have shown that the proposed algorithm outperforms traditional algorithms in bandwidth utilization, handoff dropping rate and handoff rate.

Ubiquitous Wireless Network is objectively heterogeneous network, so vertical handoff is one of crucial topics. A vertical soft handoff scheme is proposed based on SIP using Wireless Access Gateway (RGW). RGW triggers and controls the handoff session to ensure same two-way delay of handoff and rate of zero-loss packet for real-time streaming media. Using M/M/1 queue model, delay of the scheme meets requirement of real-time streaming media.

Abstract:In order to solve the problems in the process of vertical handover in heterogeneous wireless networks, We propose a mobile handover mechanism applied to the SDN(Software Defined Network) architecture on the basis of fuzzy logic algorithm combining with the Multi-path transmission control protocol(MPTCP) in this paper. This mechanism periodically acquires a number of network parameters and performs multi-angle evaluation of the network. The simulation results show that during the handooff process, the mobile device can always maintain the communication of one link and which will realize a true seamless handover. At the same time, due to the existence of the speed-adjusted vertical handover algorithm based on fuzzy logic(SVHAF), unnecessary handovers are effectively reduced, the ping-pong effect is avoided. Those also improve the quality of service(QoS) and user satisfaction.

Abstract:In order to improve accuracy of vertical handoff and to decrease connection dropping in heterogeneous wireless networks,a vertical handoff scheme was presented.This scheme improves the RSS-based handoff trigger mechanism and adopts the fuzzy logic-based normalized quantitative decision algorithm to determine the optimal handoff target network from all available access networks.To verify the feasibility of this approach,a heterogeneous network comprising UMTS and WLAN was used in simulation.Numerical results have demonstrated that the proposed approach outperforms other ones in the number of vertical handoff and handoff dropping rate while choosing effectively the optimum network by making trade-off among the user preference,network condition and system performance.
