Abstract:Vertical handoff is the switching process of a multi-interface mobile host between heterogeneous wireless networks. There have been many researches focusing on policy-enabled vertical handoff decision schemes, but no technical details on handoff metric acquisition are provided in most of them. In this paper, we introduce the MAC layer sensing technique, which is designed to estimate the handoff metrics in IEEE 802.11 WLAN (wireless local area network), into the policy-enabled decision schemes. Furthermore, we improve the existing adaptive schemes for stability period prediction, making use of the handoff metrics obtained from MAC layer sensing. Simulation results show that the proposed adaptive decision scheme outperforms the previous schemes in terms of sensitivity of stability period adjusting and ability to avoid unnecessary handoffs

Abstract:The 4G wireless communication system is envisioned to integrate cellular network (e.g. UMTS) and wireless LAN (WLAN), in virtue of the individual coverage and capacity complementary characteristics. This paper describes a possible architecture integrating UMTS and 802.11 WLAN at SGSN. A functional entity, network interwork unit (NIU), is placed between the SGSN and WLAN access network side to hide the WLAN particularities. In this integrated architecture, mobile IP based vertical handover management increases the heterogeneous system signaling cost as well as handover latency, so one major task in the handover design is to reduce the unnecessary handover probability. This paper presents an analytical vertical handover initiation model based on the criteria of received signal strength (RSS) and distance. The handover performance evaluation criterion of interest is the handover probability. The numerical results show that our model is in line with the real cases when the distance between the base station (BS) of UMTS cell and the access point (AP) of WLAN is long or not.

Abstract:In order to improve accuracy of vertical handoff and to decrease connection dropping in heterogeneous wireless networks,a vertical handoff scheme was presented.This scheme improves the RSS-based handoff trigger mechanism and adopts the fuzzy logic-based normalized quantitative decision algorithm to determine the optimal handoff target network from all available access networks.To verify the feasibility of this approach,a heterogeneous network comprising UMTS and WLAN was used in simulation.Numerical results have demonstrated that the proposed approach outperforms other ones in the number of vertical handoff and handoff dropping rate while choosing effectively the optimum network by making trade-off among the user preference,network condition and system performance.

Abstract:Fast and seamless handover are weighty issues in 3G systems. Based on UMTS and WLAN Converging architecture, a joint vertical handover decision strategy (jVHOD) was proposed for heterogeneous wireless networks. Also, several significant metrics were evaluated through a vertical handover performance model, which was validated by computer simulation. The analytical results showed that jVHOD had better performance than the conventional in terms of the number of handoffs and available bandwidth, but a little longer packet delay. To design optimal vertical handover strategies the application requirement threshold should be properly adjusted by an appropriate trade-off of related handover performance metrics.

Abstract:Ubiquitous Wireless Network will be the important infrastructure for ubiquitous information service in the future. Ubiquitous Wireless Network is objectively heterogeneous network, so vertical handoff is one of crucial topics. A vertical soft handoff scheme is proposed based on SIP using Wireless Access Gateway (RGW). RGW triggers and controls the handoff session to ensure same two-way delay of handoff and rate of zero-loss packet for real-time streaming media. Using M/M/1 queue model, delay of the scheme meets requirement of real-time streaming media.

Abstract:This paper proposed an efficient handoff algorithm for heterogeneous networks,which are constructed by wireless local area network(WLAN) and universal mobile telecommunications system(UMTS).An access control unity(ACU) with a cost function to decide which is the best network in the loosing couple architecture was presented.A vertical handoff decision scheme was given based on the accumulation of received signal strength and the distance criterion to adapt with the network conditions and deduce the handoff and dropping probabilities.The simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm has better performance than the conventional algorithm based on the absolute receive signal strength .

Abstract:Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) has already been accepted as the multimedia control signaling standard in ubiquitous wireless network by IETF and 3GPP etc. However, the handover procedure with SIP suffers from undesirable delay for real-time multimedia applications in WLAN. Moreover, the existing handover management protocols are not sufficient to guarantee handover of VoIP session in WLAN. In this paper, a cross-layer handover management architecture (CHM-SIP) is developed to shorten the service interruption time when the mobile node frequently handovers between subnets of WLAN. Based on this architecture, the detailed design of a cross-layer handover management for Voice over WLAN (VoWLAN) based SIP is carried out, which uses mobile's speed and handover signaling delay information to enhance the handover performance. The theoretical analysis and simulation results show that CHM-SIP significantly enhances the VoWLAN handover performance.

Abstract:Seamless intergateway handoff support is an essential issue to ensure continuous communications in Internet-based wireless mesh networks (WMNs). Due to the existence of multihop wireless links, traditional handoff schemes designed for single-hop wireless access networks can hardly guarantee the low handoff latency requirement in multihop WMNs. Existing solutions on reducing the handoff delay in WMNs ignore one important factor for the long handoff delay: the channel access delay of handoff signaling packets over the multihop wireless mesh backbone network. In this paper, we address the seamless intergateway handoff issue in Internet-based WMNs from a different perspective and propose a channel splitting strategy to reduce the channel access delay of handoff signaling packets over multihop wireless links. The handoff procedures of two scenarios when a mobile node has one or two transceivers are designed, and two transmission strategies for scheduling the delivery of handoff signaling packets are proposed. Simulation results show that by using the proposed channel splitting strategy, the handoff delay requirement in WMNs can be guaranteed, regardless of the background data traffic, and the average channel utilization can also be improved.

Abstract:Handover decision is one of the technical challenges in the heterogeneous network (HetNet). Current researches on this topic concentrate mainly on the two-tier networks. In this paper, we investigates the handover decision scheme for a more complex network: three-tier macrocell/relay/femtocell network. The unique characteristics of the inter-tier handover in three-tier networks are analyzed in this paper and an effective handover algorithm is proposed to reduce the frequent and unnecessary handovers based on the ideas of dwell probability and handover priority. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm significantly reduces the number of handovers while maintaining the call dropping rate at the same level.
Handover Latency of Predictive FMIPv6 in IEEE 802.11 WLANs: A Cross Layer Perspective

Abstract:Experiments show that FMIPv6 may suffer long handover latency even in the predictive mode in the real IEEE 802.11 based WLANs. To figure out the latency reason and identify potential enhancement of FMIPv6, we analyze the handover latency of the predictive FMIPv6 from a cross layer perspective using data collected in a real IEEE 802.11 test-bed. We find that the key issues affecting the handover latency of the predictive FMIPv6 in IEEE 802.11 WLANs are the lack of assistance from the network entities, the ambiguous link layer triggering time and the inefficient interaction between the link layer and the network layer. And FMIPv6 can provide fast handover with no interruptions on the upper layer applications in IEEE 802.11 WLANs through some enhancements, which can resolve the above three issues.

Abstract:In order to solve the problems in the process of vertical handover in heterogeneous wireless networks, We propose a mobile handover mechanism applied to the SDN(Software Defined Network) architecture on the basis of fuzzy logic algorithm combining with the Multi-path transmission control protocol(MPTCP) in this paper. This mechanism periodically acquires a number of network parameters and performs multi-angle evaluation of the network. The simulation results show that during the handooff process, the mobile device can always maintain the communication of one link and which will realize a true seamless handover. At the same time, due to the existence of the speed-adjusted vertical handover algorithm based on fuzzy logic(SVHAF), unnecessary handovers are effectively reduced, the ping-pong effect is avoided. Those also improve the quality of service(QoS) and user satisfaction.

Abstract:We propose a novel Quality of Service (QoS) vertical handoff scheme with the support of the Software-Defined Network (SDN) technique for the heterogeneous wireless networks. The proposed scheme solves two important issues of the vertical handoff: network selection and handoff timing. In this paper, the network selection is formulated as an 0-1 integer programming problem, which maximizes the overall QoS and avoids the network congestion. After the network selection process is finished, a mobile will wait for a time period for implementing the vertical handoff. The selected network should be consistently more appropriate than the current network during the time period, the mobile will transfer its inter-network connection to the selected network. Our proposed scheme ensures that, a mobile will transfer to the most appropriate network at the most appropriate time. Comprehensive simulation has been conducted. It is shown that the proposed scheme reduces the number of vertical handoffs, and maximizes the overall QoS significantly comparing with existing schemes.

Abstract:In heterogeneous wireless network, vertical handoff plays an important role for guaranteeing quality of service and overall performance of network. Conventional vertical handoff trigger schemes are mostly developed from horizontal handoff in homogeneous cellular network. Basically, they can be summarized as hysteresis-based and dwelling-timer-based algorithms, which are reliable on avoiding unnecessary handoff caused by the terminals dwelling at the edge of WLAN coverage. However, the coverage of WLAN is much smaller compared with cellular network, while the motion types of terminals can be various in a typical outdoor scenario. As a result, traditional algorithms are less effective in avoiding unnecessary handoff triggered by vehicle-borne terminals with various speeds. Besides that, hysteresis and dwelling-timer thresholds usually need to be modified to satisfy different channel environments. For solving this problem, a vertical handoff algorithm based on Q-learning is proposed in this paper. Q-learning can provide the decider with self-adaptive ability for handling the terminals' handoff requests with different motion types and channel conditions. Meanwhile, Neural Fuzzy Inference System (NFIS) is embedded to retain a continuous perception of the state space. Simulation results verify that the proposed algorithm can achieve lower unnecessary handoff probability compared with the other two conventional algorithms.

Abstract:A greater of multimedia services are based on the IP network, such as VoIP and IPTV. During the vertical handover process between Mobile Satellite System (MSS) and UMTS, delay jitter, packet loss and disorder will happen to multimedia services. We used the method of extension of RTP and RTCP protocols, modification of terminal buffer size and RTP packet play time to make the service not disrupted during handover. Analysis results demonstrate that this scheme could achieve the seamless media stream handover between MSS and UMTS.

Abstract:The next generation networks are designed to provide ubiquitous access networks to mobile users. Users may require various data rates and quality of service (QoS) in different places. The integrating of wireless cellular network and wireless local area network (WLAN) can take full advantage of each other, and provides consumers with much more comprehensive wireless service. In this paper, a novel internetworking architecture between WLAN and UMTS cellular networks with Radio-over-Fiber (RoF) technique is proposed. Based on RoF technique, we can locate the WLAN server in the Base Station (BS) of UMTS, and Mobile Node can always connect with BS whether it is in UMTS or WLAN. In particular, algorithms for intersystem communications and vertical handover management in this architecture are also proposed. The former algorithm decreases the signaling burden for the UMTS core network or core Internet. And the later one significantly reduces the latency in vertical handover.

Abstract:The Mobile WiMAX standard (IEEE 802.16e-2005) brings wireless broadband to a new level due to the support of nomadism. Still, handover latency in Mobile WiMAX is an issue that may affect real-time continuity of application sessions. This is partially due to the Layer 2 scanning/ranging, as well as the network re-entry procedure, which may result in a latency of hundreds of milliseconds, far exceeding the requirement of typical real-time services (e.g., 150 ms for Voice over IP). In this paper, we describe a mechanism which incorporates information from several OSI Layers to speed up the Layer 2 handover. We show by means of simulations that this new mechanism can decrease the handover latency significantly, to less than 100 ms in most cases.

Abstract:The IEEE 802.11 based network is the most popular wireless network, but its packet latency and loss rate in mobility support disable a lot of interactive real-time network applications to run on wireless mobile station. The existing handoff schemes can only resolve the problems of inner ESS domain handoff, but cannot effectively resolve that of inter ESS domains handoff because the handoff between two ESS domains involves network layer operations. In this paper, a smooth handoff scheme based on virtual interface in wireless network is proposed. This scheme applies a time-sharing policy on physical wireless interface, which enables mobile station to establish new wireless link with the right new access point at the same time to keep normal communication in present wireless link with the previous access point, so it can resolve the problems of packet latency and loss ratio not only for inner ESS domain handoff but also for inter ESS domain handoff perfectly. And the simulation results on NS2 confirms that it could satisfy the demand of interactive real-time applications in wireless mobile network.

Abstract:To improve heavy overhead and long detection latency while implanting FMIPv6 and DAD mechanism for fast handover in mobile WiMAX networks,this paper proposed a cross-layer fast handover scheme.In proposed scheme,used FMIPv6 and mSCTP,and considered ODAD mechanism also.It not only eliminated the overhead of establishing tunnel,but also reduced the overhead of address detection.Evaluating performance of proposed scheme with NS2,simulation results show the packet loss and the handover latency are significantly improved,up to 65% and 60% respectively.
