Abstract:In cellular vehicular communications, high density and mobility of vehicles require frequent resource allocation, which can cause network congestion and large signalling and processing delay. To overcome this problem, we propose a novel semi-persistent resource allocation scheme based on a two-tier heterogeneous network architecture. The architecture includes a central macro base station (MBS) and multiple roadside units (RSU). In the proposed semi-persistent scheme, the MBS pre-allocates persistent resource to RSUs based on predicted traffic, and then allocates dynamic resource upon real-time requests from RSUs while vehicles simultaneously communicate using the pre-allocated resource. A simple Space-Time k-Nearest Neighbour (ST-kNN) method is developed for short-term traffic prediction, and a geometric water-filling algorithm is developed for minimizing the relative latency. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed semi-persistent scheme in comparison with two benchmark schemes.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) is a promising complementary technology to its radio frequency (RF) counterpart. Heterogeneous VLC-WiFi systems offer a solution for future indoor communications that combines VLC to support high data rate transmission and RF to support reliable connectivity. In such heterogeneous systems, vertical handover (VHO) is critical for improving the system performance. This paper investigates an efficient VHO scheme. We formulate it as a Markov decision process problem and adopt a dynamic approach to obtain a tradeoff between the switching cost and the delay requirement. The proposed scheme determines whether to perform VHO given the queue length and the condition of the optical wireless channel (available or unavailable). The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme is able to save about 50% of the signaling cost of the VHO process without an obvious loss in system performance. Moreover, the proposed scheme is adaptable to different scenarios.

Abstract:5G vehicular communication is one of key enablers in next generation intelligent transportation system (ITS), that require ultra-reliable and low latency communication (URLLC). To meet this requirement, a new hybrid vehicular network structure which supports both centralized network structure and distributed structure is proposed in this paper. Based on the proposed network structure, a new vehicular network utility model considering the latency and reliability in vehicular networks is developed based on Euclidean norm theory. Building on the Pareto improvement theory in economics, a vehicular network uplink optimization algorithm is proposed to optimize the uplink utility of vehicles on the roads. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can significantly improve the uplink vehicular network utility in vehicular networks to meet the URLLC requirements.

Abstract:Here we report a smartphone-based potentiometric biosensor for point-of-care testing of salivary α-amylase (sAA), which is one of the most sensitive indices of autonomic nervous system activity, and therefore a promising non-invasive biomarker for mental health. The biosensing system includes a smartphone having a sAA-detection App, a potentiometric reader and a sensing chip with preloaded reagents. The saliva sample wicks into the reaction zone on the sensing chip so that the sAA reacts with the preloaded reagents, resulting in conversion of an electron mediator Fe(CN)6(3-) to Fe(CN)6(4-). The sensing chip is then pressed by fingers to push the reaction mixture into the detection zone for the potentiometric measurement. The potential measured by the smartphone-powered potentiometric reader is sent to the smartphone App via the USB port, and converted into sAA concentration based on a calibration curve. Using our method, sAA in real human sample is quantitatively analyzed within 5 min. The results are in good agreement with that obtained using a reference method, and correlated to psychological states of the subjects.

Abstract:The complementary roles of visible light communication (VLC) and radio frequency (RF). The complementary roles of visible light communication (VLC) and radio frequency (RF) in both coverage and capacity have made their combined use essential in wireless communication. While this combination offers some advantages over a sole media, it presents challenges with respect to the handover from VLC to RF, provision of seamless connections between VLC and RF, and the blockage of line-of-sight (LOS) in VLC. Previous works have not paid much attention to the quality of experience (QoE) of a user in VLC heterogeneous network (HetNet) and the effect of user's mobility on QoE. Thus, in this article, we consider a heterogeneous environment where a user moves between two-tier VLC-RF network. We propose a fuzzy logic approach termed the estimated quality of experience fuzzy logic (EQFL-VHO) scheme. This scheme fuses four input metrics variables, namely: estimated QoE in RF handover failure probability, delay cost, and velocity of the user equipment (UE), to decide whether handover needs to be triggered. After fuzzification, the handover factor (HF) is used to determine whether handover to RF would enhance user's QoE or not. Our scheme couples the advantages of the Mamdani fuzzy logic system and QoE estimation to enhance system performance. Comparatively, simulation outcomes demonstrate that the EQFL-VHO scheme outperforms traditional methods including immediate VHO (I-VHO) and dwell VHO (D-VHO), as well as alternative fuzzy logic techniques like combinatorial fusion analysis (CFA) and Kalman Filter and Fuzzy Logic in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks (KAFUZ), in terms of QoE enhancement, reduced handover failures, and minimized delay costs. Additionally, our approach effectively diminishes handover initiation frequency.

Abstract:The limitation of indoor visible light coverage and the attenuation of its signal when propagating in line-of-sight has seriously affected the stable communication of receiving devices when users move randomly and also aggravated the power consumption of visible light networking systems. According to the above situation, on the basis of the heterogeneous networking of visible light communication (VLC) and RF communication integration, this article proposes a horizontal–vertical collaborative handover strategy based on the communication blind area dwell time (CBD-HVHO). Combining asymmetrically clipped optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ACO-OFDM) technology with networking handover technology, ACO-OFDM is used to determine the indoor communication blind area by calculating the bit error rate (BER) value at the signal receiver while reducing the multipath interference generated by visible light signals during channel transmission. To achieve this, set the communication blind channel interruption time as the threshold time, compare the communication blind area dwell time with the threshold time, and finally combine the horizontal and vertical collaborative handover strategies based on the communication blind area dwell time. The simulation results show that the handover probability is 0.009, the average number of handovers is 1.006, and the average network throughput is 195.2826 Mbps. Compared with the previously proposed immediate vertical handover (I-VHO) scheme and the dwell vertical handover (D-VHO) scheme, the communication stability is significantly improved, and the power consumption of the network system is reduced to a certain extent.

Abstract:Ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) is essential for future vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) networks to improve traffic safety and enhance driving experience. Due to the fast-varying channel caused by high mobility, guaranteeing latency and reliability performance of the V2V links is a tremendous challenge. In this paper, we propose a novel resource allocation framework to support ultra-reliable low-latency V2V communications. The proposed framework includes both large-scale and small-scale resource optimizations. The large-scale resource allocation is performed at the central base station based on large-scale channel information periodically collected from vehicles. On the other hand, the small-scale resource allocation is performed at the vehicles according to instantaneous channel and queuing information. We develop optimal solutions for both resource allocation problems. With the proposed optimal solutions, the latency performance at the occurrence of extreme events is enhanced by enabling spectrum sharing among the vehicles. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can effectively improve the URLLC performance compared against the benchmark algorithm.

Abstract:Currently, traditional Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) are evolving towards the vehicular heterogeneous networks. There is an urgent need for vehicular users to apply an efficient and intelligent interface for network switching to meet their QoS requirements. In this paper, we present an optimized algorithm for network interface switching problem in vehicular heterogeneous networks. The policy integrates with multiple metrics including monetary cost, available bandwidth, and data transfer delay. Besides, it is able to accurately predict the distribution of RoadSide Units (RSUs). The optimal stopping theory is leveraged to maximize the users' satisfaction degree over various user-specified preferences. The results of simulation show that the optimal-stopping-based policy significantly outperforms several existing policies.

Abstract:In future fifth-generation (5G) communication systems, driven by the evolution of today's most demanding applications, video streaming over vehicle networks will play an increasingly significant role in our daily lives. In this paper, based on a heterogeneous architecture consisting of both cellular base stations (BSs) of wide coverage and cognitive-radio-enabled roadside infrastructures, a semi-Markov decision process (SMDP)-based resource-allocation scheme is proposed to facilitate video streaming application in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and smooth playback. In addition to improving video quality of vehicle users, quality of service (QoS) provisioning for background users that can originally exist in the cellular network is also considered in the proposed scheme. Specifically, based on the states of the background users, vehicle users, and the availability of the cognitive bands, the optimal resource allocation, aiming at maximizing the video streaming quality while guaranteeing the call-level performance of the background users, is achieved by addressing two interrelated joint call admission control (CAC) and channel allocation problems for cellular and roadside infrastructure networks, respectively. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can well protect background users when coexisting with bandwidth-hungry vehicle video users and is effective in not only improving video streaming quality for vehicle users but boosting bandwidth utilization of the whole network as well.

Abstract:With the explosive growth of the data traffic and the access number of intelligent devices, the wireless communication systems based on the radio frequency (RF) is suffering from the pressure of spectrum shortage and access congestion constantly, which can be alleviated with the help of visible light communication (VLC). However, due to the limitations of VLC such as finite coverage and inconvenient uplinks, it is imperative to form the hybrid systems and realize the complementary advantages of VLC and RF. In this paper, the hybrid VLC-RF system with multi-users is investigated, where the sum achievable rate and energy efficiency (EE) are maximized via the alternate optimization of transceiver association and power allocation. In addition, based on various types of multiple access points, EE is optimized under different QoS requirements for green communications. With the assistance of proper approximations, the overall problem is decomposed into several convex sub-problems, which can be solved analytically and avoid traversal permutation. The numerical simulations show the effectiveness and scalability of the proposed algorithm in the hybrid VLC-RF system, which can achieve superior performances than the conventional methods and single systems in multifarious scenarios.

Abstract:The coexistence of radio frequency (RF) and visible light communications (VLC) in typical indoor environments can be leveraged to support vast user quality-of-service (QoS) needs. In this paper, we target a hybrid RF/VLC network in which data transmission is provided via either an RF access point or a VLC luminary based on a selection process. We employ the concept of effective capacity, which defines the maximum constant arrival data rate at the transmitter buffer when the QoS needs are imposed as limits on the buffer overflow and delay violation probabilities, as the main selection criteria. We initially formulate the effective capacity of both channels with respect to channel gains and user distribution. Under the assumption of uniform user distribution within the VLC cell, we then provide a closed-form approximation for the effective capacity of the VLC channel. We further investigate the effects of illumination needs and line-of-sight blockage on the VLC performance. In addition, we explore the non-asymptotic bounds regarding the buffering delay by capitalizing on the effective capacity. Through simulation results, we show the impacts of different physical aspects and data-link QoS needs on the effective capacity and delay bounds.

Abstract:Since the last decade, Visible Light Communication (VLC) has represented a huge capacity to complement conventional Radio Frequency (RF) technologies in plenty of applications. The credibility of VLC in terms of power consumption has always been compared to RF. In this work, in addition to addressing this issue through a detailed power model, the co-existence of VLC and the Long-Term Evolution (LTE) cellular network in a vehicular environment has been empirically investigated. The coordination of data transmission among different technologies is managed through a novel vertical handover mechanism, namely INVISIBLE 2.0. This technique is triggered by the error probability to meet the 3GPP requirements on packet reception ratio while endorsing VLC as the preferred technology bearer. We demonstrate that INVISIBLE 2.0 achieves a more stable latency, and energy efficiency based on extensive simulation results.

Abstract:Recently, vehicle to everything (V2X) communications have drawn a significant amount of attention. Emerging V2X applications demand the efficient utilization of heterogeneous access technologies, such as long-term evolution (LTE), Wi-Fi, and dedicated short-range communications. This work first develops a software-defined networking-based application-layer scheme to exploit the available bandwidth from the LTE and Wi-Fi networks in vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication. The newly proposed scheme utilizes the vehicles’ states information to obtain an optimal association of the vehicles with different access points for maximizing the system’s quality of experience (QoE) of all cars. We then incorporate the vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications to further improve performance when some users’ V2I QoEs are not satisfactory. A heuristic solution that jointly determines the resource allocation as well as V2I and V2V connections are derived. The proposed schemes are evaluated in NS-3 to illustrate their good performance and low computational complexity.

Abstract:A hybrid downlink system that simultaneously uses visible light communication (VLC) and radio frequency (RF) is investigated, assuming that only one of the two considered users is capable of receiving information over the optical band. In order to facilitate information transmissions from the VLC access point to the RF user, mixed VLC/RF relaying and simultaneous lightwave information and power transfer (SLIPT) are utilized. Moreover, a cognitive-based resource allocation policy and tractable bounds for the harvested energy are introduced. Furthermore, by taking into account the random location of the VLC and RF user terminals, the closed-form outage probability for the VLC user is given, while for the RF user, the outage probability is derived in terms of infinite-series, which is also approximated by a tractable closed-form expression. In addition, the outage probability of the RF user is minimized by optimizing the direct current (DC) component. Finally, simulations are provided to verify the accuracy of the theoretical analysis and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed optimization framework.

Abstract:Fast and seamless handover are weighty issues in 3G systems. Based on UMTS and WLAN Converging architecture, a joint vertical handover decision strategy (jVHOD) was proposed for heterogeneous wireless networks. Also, several significant metrics were evaluated through a vertical handover performance model, which was validated by computer simulation. The analytical results showed that jVHOD had better performance than the conventional in terms of the number of handoffs and available bandwidth, but a little longer packet delay. To design optimal vertical handover strategies the application requirement threshold should be properly adjusted by an appropriate trade-off of related handover performance metrics.
