Abstract:We investigate the spin-dependent Fano resonance in an impurity-doped graphene sheet coupled to ferromagnetic (FM) leads at low temperatures. By the nonequilibrium Green's function theory, we calculate the linear conductance of the system, which possesses a different Fano structure both in the parallel and anti-parallel configuration of the FM leads. The results come from the quantum interference between resonant and nonresonant processes in the system. Our studies indicate that the system is an ideal platform to investigate the Fano physics, even in some relevant experiments.

Abstract:In response to the comment by Zhu and Berakdar (arXiv:1207.3457) that the physical system considered by them in their previous work [Ding et al., PRB 84, 115433 (2011)] is conceptually different from ours in the appendix of our latest paper [Zhou and Wu, arXiv:1206.3435], we show why they are relevant and further point out conceptually the problems in their work. We also point out that the main supporting arguments in their comment are incorrect.

Abstract:In a recent Rapid Communication (Phys. Rev. B 63, 121210(R) (2001)), Haüsler showed that the interaction between electrons in quantum wires may enhance the persistent spin current arising from Rashba spin-orbital coupling. In this Comments, we would like to point out that this 'enhancement' comes from a misunderstanding to the boosting persistent current in the Luttinger liquid theory. A correct calculation will not give such an enhancement of the persistent spin current. Meanwhile, we provide a Luttinger liquid theory with Rashba spin-orbital interaction by bosonization, which may show how the Rashba precession is in a Luttinger liquid.

Abstract:The present paper is the reply to Sandu's Comment on our paper [Phys. Rev. B 72, 153314 (2005)], i.e., the effect of the current operator on the spin-dependent tunneling through a barrier in the presence of the Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction (DSOI). We demonstrate theoretically and numerically that our previous numerical result is correct when there is no DSOI in the contact region and it remains a good approximation in the presence of the ${k}^{3}$-DSOI in the contact regions.

Abstract:It has been shown recently [J. L. Lado et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 027203 (2014)] that edge magnetic moments in graphene-like nanoribbons are strongly influenced by the intrinsic spin-orbit interaction. Due to this interaction an anisotropy comes about which makes the in-plane arrangement of magnetic moments energetically more favorable than that corresponding to the out-of-plane configuration. In this paper we raise both the edge magnetism problem as well as differential conductance and shot noise Fano factor issues, in the context of finite-size flakes within the Coulomb blockade (CB) transport regime. Our findings elucidate the following problems: (i) modification of the CB diamonds by the appearance of the in-plane magnetic moments, (ii) modification of the CB diamonds by intrinsic spin-orbit interaction.

Frustrated superfluids in a non-Abelian flux

Abstract:We study possible superfluid states of the Rashba spin-orbit coupled (SOC) spinor bosons with the spin anisotropic interaction λ hopping in a square lattice. The frustrations from the non-abelian flux due to the SOC leads to novel spin-bond correlated superfluids. By using a recently developed systematic "order from quantum disorder" analysis, we not only determine the true quantum ground state, but also evaluate the mass gap in the spin sector at λ < 1, especially compute the the excitation spectrum of the Goldstone mode in the spin sector at λ=1 which would be quadratic without the analysis. The analysis also leads to different critical exponents on the two sides of the 2nd order transition driven by a roton touchdown at λ=1. The intimate analogy at λ=1 with the charge neutral Goldstone mode in the pseudo-spin sector in the Bilayer quantum Hall systems at the total filling factor ν_T=1 are stressed. The experimental implications and detections of these novel phenomena in cold atoms loaded on a optical lattice are presented.
Spin relaxation in fluorinated single and bilayer graphene

Abstract:We present a joint experiment-theory study on the role of fluorine adatoms in spin and momentum scattering of charge carriers in dilute fluorinated graphene and bilayer graphene. The experimental spin-flip and momentum scattering rates and their dependence on the density of fluorine and carrier doping are obtained through weak localization and conductivity measurements, respectively, and suggest the role of fluorine as resonant magnetic impurities. For the estimated fluorine concentration of a few 100 ppm, the observed spin lifetimes are in the range of 1-10\,ps. Theoretically, we established tight-binding electronic structures of fluorinated graphene and bilayer graphene by fitting to density functional supercell calculations and performed a comprehensive analysis of the spin-flip and momentum scattering rates within the same devices, aiming to develop a consistent description of both scattering channels. We find that resonant scattering in graphene is very sensitive to the precise position of the resonance level, as well as to the magnitude of the exchange coupling between itinerant carriers and localized spins. The experimental data point to the presence of weak spin-flip scatterers that, at the same time, relax the electron momentum strongly, nearly preserving the electron-hole symmetry. Such scatterers would exhibit resonance energies much closer to the neutrality point than what density functional theory predicts in the dilute limit. The inclusion of a magnetic moment on fluorine adatoms allowed us to qualitatively capture the carrier density dependence of the experimental rates but predicts a greater (weaker) spin (momentum) relaxation rate than the measurements. We discuss possible scenarios that may be responsible for the discrepancies. Our systematic study exposes the complexities involved in accurately capturing the behavior of adatoms on graphene.

Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thoules Phase Transition of Spin-Orbit Coupled Fermi Gas in Optical Lattice

Abstract:We use a determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulation and a mean-field approach to study the Rashba spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases in square optical lattice. Notably, we show that the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thoules phase transition temperature can be enhanced by the spin-orbit coupling. The superfluidity is always dominated by spin-singlet pairing when the attraction or the spin-orbit coupling increases. Moreover, the spin susceptibility is shown to be anisotropic and attends a steady value in the presence of the spin-orbit coupling. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2014
Spin current Kondo effect in frustrated Kondo systems

Abstract:Magnetic frustrations can enhance quantum zero-point motion in spin systems and lead to exotic topological insulating states. When coupled to mobile electrons, they may lead to unusual non-Fermi liquid or metallic spin liquid states whose nature has not been well explored. Here, we propose a spin current Kondo mechanism underlying a series of non-Fermi liquid phases on the border of Kondo and magnetic phases in a frustrated three-impurity Kondo model. This mechanism is confirmed by renormalization group analysis and describes movable Kondo singlets called "holons" induced by an effective coupling between the spin current of conduction electrons and the vector chirality of localized spins. Similar mechanism may widely exist in all frustrated Kondo systems and be detected through spin-current noise measurements.

Abstract:We report a systematic study on strong enhancement of spin-orbit interaction (SOI) in graphene driven by transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Low temperature magnetotoransport measurements of graphene proximitized to different TMDs (monolayer and bulk WSe$_2$, WS$_2$ and monolayer MoS$_2$) all exhibit weak antilocalization peaks, a signature of strong SOI induced in graphene. The amplitudes of the induced SOI are different for different materials and thickness, and we find that monolayer WSe$_2$ and WS$_2$ can induce much stronger SOI than bulk ones and also monolayer MoS$_2$. The estimated spin-orbit (SO) scattering strength for the former reaches $\sim$ 10 meV whereas for the latter it is around 1 meV or less. We also discuss the symmetry and type of the induced SOI in detail, especially focusing on the identification of intrinsic and valley-Zeeman (VZ) SOI via the dominant spin relaxation mechanism. Our findings offer insight on the possible realization of the quantum spin Hall (QSH) state in graphene.

Abstract:Electronic systems with multiple degenerate degrees of freedom can support a rich variety of broken symmetry states. In a graphene Landau level (LL), strong Coulomb interactions and the fourfold spin–valley degeneracy lead to an approximate SU(4) isospin symmetry. At partial filling, exchange interactions can break this symmetry, manifesting as further Hall plateaus outside the normal integer sequence. Here we report the observation of a number of these quantum Hall isospin ferromagnetic (QHIFM) states, which we classify according to their real spin structure using tilted field magnetotransport. The large activation gaps confirm the Coulomb origin of all the broken symmetry states, but the order depends strongly on LL index. In the high-energy LLs the Zeeman effect is the dominant aligning field, leading to real spin ferromagnets hosting skyrmionic excitations at half filling, whereas in the ‘relativistic’ zero LL lattice scale interactions drive the system to a spin unpolarized state. The extra states sometimes observed in graphene’s quantum Hall characteristics have been presumed to be the result of broken SU(4) symmetry. Magnetotransport measurements of high-quality graphene in a tilted magnetic field finally prove this is indeed the case.

Abstract:Recent advances in the field of condensed-matter physics have unlocked the potential to realize and control emergent material phases that do not exist in thermal equilibrium. One of the most promising concepts in this regard is Floquet engineering, the coherent dressing of matter via time-periodic perturbations. However, the broad applicability of Floquet engineering to quantum materials is still unclear. For the paradigmatic case of monolayer graphene, the theoretically predicted Floquet-induced effects, despite a seminal report of the light-induced anomalous Hall effect, have been put into question. Here, we overcome this problem by using electronic structure measurements to provide direct experimental evidence of Floquet engineering in graphene. We report light-matter-dressed Dirac bands by measuring the contribution of Floquet sidebands, Volkov sidebands, and their quantum path interference to graphene's photoemission spectral function. Our results finally demonstrate that Floquet engineering in graphene is possible, paving the way for the experimental realization of the many theoretical proposals on Floquet-engineered band structures and topological phases.
