Abstract:The hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanol under mild conditions (similar to 340 K) was achieved over Raney Ni catalyst in the aqueous phase. The adsorption-desorption properties of the reactants (phenol and H-2) and the products (cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol) on the Raney Ni catalyst are different in the aqueous phase and the organic phase. The hydrogenation rate of phenol is improved because the Raney Ni catalyst adsorbs more H-2 and phenol in water than in methanol. Meanwhile, the higher uptakes of H-2 and the lower desorption rates for cyclohexanone on the Raney Ni catalyst in the aqueous system result in the further hydrogenation of cyclohexanone to cyclohexanol.

Abstract:A facile synthesis method of palladium phosphide supported on the activated carbon was developed. The effects of Pd precursors for phosphatization, phosphatization temperature, and the ratio of hypophosphite/Pd on the generation of palladium phosphide were investigated, and a generation mechanism of the Pd3P crystal structure is proposed. The results demonstrate that only PdO, rather than Pd or PdCl2, can transform into Pd phosphide without damage to the activated carbon. The penetration of P into the Pd particle can dramatically improve the dispersion of Pd species particles on the activated carbon. The generation of Pd phosphide greatly depends on the phosphatization temperature and the ratio of hypophosphite/Pd. An intact Pd3P crystal structure was obtained when the ratio of hypophosphite/Pd reached 32 and the phosphatization temperature was above 400 °C. The Pd3P supported on the activated carbon exhibited superior catalytic performance in terms of the hydrogenation of halonitrobenzenes to haloanilines because it had few L acids and B acids sites and could not generate deficient-electron active hydrogen atoms as electrophiles.

Abstract:Aiming at the design and preparation of high efficiency catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of phenol, the hierarchically porous Pd@CNF catalysts were fabricated by oxygen-activating ZIF-67/PAN composite nanofibers with O-2 as the oxidant during high-temperature pyrolysis, followed by acid etching and Pd loading. Appropriate initial oxygen concentration and Co2+ molar concentration are conducive to the fabrication of hierarchically porous carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with a high mesopore and macropore ratio, increased ether-type oxygen content, and good one-dimensional (1D) morphology, which enhance the dispersion and anchoring of Pd, increase the strength of basic sites and H2 adsorption, and improve the mass transfer and dispersibility in cyclohexane. The corresponding catalyst Pd@CNFs-0.1-0.2 exhibits excellent phenol hydrogenation performance with a turnover frequency value of 66.6 h(-1), which is 6.3 times that of Pd@CNFs-0.1-1 and 2.4 times that of Pd@CNFs-0.1-0. Furthermore, the 1D morphology of Pd@CNFs-0.1-0.2 enables the rapid recovery and recycling of the catalyst. This work provides a new direction for the development of efficient and easy-to-recover phenol selective hydrogenation catalysts.

Abstract:A carbon nanotubes (CNTs) supported composite catalyst consisting of Pd and Ni (Pd–Ni/CNT) is synthesized by a chemical method. The electrocatalytic activities of Pd/CNT, Ni/CNT and Pd–Ni/CNT toward the hydrazine oxidation reaction (HOR) are evaluated by linear sweep voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and polarization measurement. The composite catalyst demonstrates higher electrocatalytic activity than its single-constituent catalysts due to the synergy between Ni and Pd. The Pd addition in the composite catalyst prevents oxidation of Ni so that the Pd–Ni/CNT electrode exhibits smaller reaction resistance to the HOR than the Ni/CNT and Pd/CNT electrodes.

Abstract:One-step hydrogenation of phenol is a preferable and economic route for preparing cyclohexanone. The development of catalysts with high catalytic performance and easy recovery still keeps a significant challenge. Herein, the novel ZIF-derived hierarchically porous carbon nanofibers (ZCNFs) were fabricated by electrospinning and calcination with ZIF-67 as the nanoparticles precursor and PAN as the CNFs precursor, and they were used as the supports of Pd nanoparticles for preparing the Pd@ZCNFs-x catalysts [x is the mass ratio of ZIF-67 to PAN (%)]. Pd@ZCNFs-20 exhibits superior catalytic performance in the phenol hydrogenation to cyclohexanone, and its catalytic activity is 2.2 times higher than that of Pd@ZCNFs-0. The ZIF-67 doping is in favor of the formation of ZCNFs with more defects, larger surface area, hierarchical pore structure, higher N content and better Pd dispersion, thereby improving the catalytic activity. Furthermore, the as-prepared Pd@ZCNFs-20 catalyst is easy to be recovered from the reaction mixture due to its one-dimensional structure, and shows good reusability during six reaction cycles. In view of the high catalytic performance and reusability of the Pd@ZCNFs catalysts, the developed hybrid ZCNFs are potential candidates for the phenol hydrogenation. The ZIF-67 doping is in favor of the formation of ZIF-derived hierarchical porous carbon nanofibers (ZCNFs) with more defects, larger surface area, hierarchical pore structure, higher N content and better Pd dispersion, thereby improving the catalytic activity of Pd@ZCNFs in the phenol hydrogenation to cyclohexanone.

Abstract:The phenol hydrogenation is a green strategy for preparing cyclohexanone. The key challenge is to develop efficient catalysts. Herein, composite carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with a core-shell structure were fabricated, where ZIF-L-Co/PAN composite nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning and in-situ growth, and used as the precursor. The Pd@CNFs catalysts were synthesized by the Pd loading and applied for the phenol hydrogenation. The as-fabricated Pd@CNFs-0.3 catalyst shows superior catalytic performance, and its turnover frequency (TOF) is 59.5 h-1, which is 2.3 times that of the PAN-derived Pd@CNFs-0 catalyst and 4.9 times that of the powdered ZIFs-derived Pd@CN-0.3 catalyst. The synergistic effect of carbon nanofibers core and ZIFs-derived shell layer carbon leads to high Pd loading, enhanced phenol adsorption capacity, and fast electron and mass transfer, which together contribute to the superior catalytic performance of Pd@CNFs-0.3. Moreover, because of the unique onedimensional nanofiber structure, Pd@CNFs-0.3 shows good recovery and reusability in the phenol hydrogenation.

Abstract:Palladium nanoparticles supported on a mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride, Pd@mpg-C3N4, has been developed as an effective, heterogeneous catalyst for the liquid-phase semihydrogenation of phenylacetylene under mild conditions (303 K, atmospheric H-2). A total conversion was achieved with high selectivity of styrene (higher than 94%) within 85 minutes. Moreover, the spent catalyst can be easily recovered by filtration and then reused nine times without apparent lose of selectivity. The generality of Pd@mpg-C3N4 catalyst for partial hydrogenation of alkynes was also checked for terminal and internal alkynes with similar performance. The Pd@mpg-C3N4 catalyst was proven to be of industrial interest.
Highly Selective Hydrogenation of Phenols to Cyclohexanone Derivatives Using a Palladium@N-Doped Carbon/SiO 2 Catalyst

Abstract:A new palladium-based heterogeneous material was synthesized by means of immobilization of Pd(OAc)2/1,10-phenanthroline on commercially available SiO2 and subsequent pyrolysis at 600 °C for 2 h in air, namely, a Pd@N-doped carbon/SiO2 catalyst. The obtained catalyst was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques, and was effectively applied in the highly selective hydrogenation of phenols to give the corresponding cyclohexanone derivatives with 93–98% yields at 100 °C under 0.4 MPa H2 in EtOH. It was demonstrated that introducing nitrogen could effectively promote the Pd dispersion and enhance the electronic interaction of Pd, both of which facilitate the improvement of the catalytic activity and selectivity. The likely reaction pathway was outlined to elucidate the selective hydrogenation mechanism according to experimental results.

Abstract:A composite catalyst including palladium nanoparticles on titania (TiO2) and on nitrogen-modified porous carbon (Pd/TiO2@NC) is synthesized from palladium salts, tetrabutyl titanate, and chitosan. N-2 sorption isotherms show that the catalyst has a high BET surface area (229m(2)g(-1)) and large porosity. XPS and TEM characterization of the catalyst shows that palladium species with different chemical states are well dispersed across the TiO2 and nitrogen-modified porous carbon, respectively. The Pd/TiO2@NC catalyst is very active and shows excellent stability towards hydrogenation of vanillin to 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol using formic acid as hydrogen source. This activity can be attributed to a synergistic effect between the Pd/TiO2 (a catalyst for dehydrogenation of formic acid) and Pd/NC (a catalyst for hydrogenation of vanillin) sites.

Abstract:Metal organic framework (MOF) derivatives, porous N-doped carbons (CN), can be used as catalyst carriers owing to their excellent structural properties. The microstructures of MOF-derived carbon materials are affected considerably by the atmosphere in which the parent MOFs are pyrolyzed. In this study, a hierarchically porous N-doped carbon hybrid of carbon nanotubes and a porous carbon framework (denoted CN-H) was fabricated by pyrolysis in a H-2/Ar atmosphere followed by acid etching, and subsequently, a Pd@CN-H catalyst was synthesized by the addition of Pd nanoparticles on the porous N-doped carbon support. The pyrolysis atmosphere and etching treatment significantly affected the morphology, specific surface area, meso/macropore ratio, and composition of the porous N-doped carbon materials, as well as the catalytic properties of the Pd@CN catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of phenol to produce cyclohexanone. Nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements and inductively coupled plasma atomic absorption spectroscopy analyses confirmed that pyrolysis in a H-2/Ar atmosphere and acid etching significantly increased the number of meso/macropores in Pd@CN-H, thus enhancing the Pd loading and phenol adsorption. As a result of the increased porosity, Pd loading, and phenol adsorption, the cyclohexanone selectivity and phenol conversion were improved. Furthermore, the as-fabricated Pd@CN-H catalyst displayed good reusability in recycling tests. These results provide insights into the synthesis of MOF-derived hybrid carbon materials and their possible utilization in catalysis.

Abstract:Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) are considered as promising candidates for large-scale hydrogen storage, which offers significant advantages in terms of hydrogen storage density, ease of storage and transportation. NPhCZ (N-phenylcarbazole)/18H-NPhCZ (perhydro-N-phenylcarbazole) is proposed as a typical system with high hydrogen storage capacity. However, low dehydrogenation activity and selectivity of catalysts restrict the cyclic efficiency of hydrogen storage. In this study, the efficient catalysts are designed by the immobilization of ultrafine, highly dispersed Pd nanoparticles onto Ni, N co-doped carbon materials through wet chemical reduction. The Pd/Ni@NC-10 catalyst exhibits the highest catalytic performance with 100 % conversion, 81.9 % selectivity of NPhCZ and 6.48 wt% hydrogen release amount. Combined with XRD, HRTEM, Raman, XPS, H2-TPR, 2-TPR, N2 2 physisorption characterization methods and DFT calculations, it is found that the doped Ni, N species could synergistically increase the dispersion of loaded Pd nanoparticles, as well as regulate the electronic state around Pd, which in turn accelerates the rate of the rate-limiting step. The evident interaction between Pd nanoparticles and Ni, N co-doped carbon brings the enhancement of dehydrogenation efficiency. Besides, the spent catalysts are measured by XRD, TEM, XPS and evaluated for the dehydrogenation reaction, indicating that Pd/Ni@NC-10 shows good structural stability, durability and recyclability. It provides practical guidance for the design of LOHCs dehydrogenation catalysts.
Space-Confined Carbon-Doped Pd Nanoparticles as a Highly Efficient Catalyst for Selective Phenol Hydrogenation

Abstract:Pd-based catalysts have been widely applied in hydrogenation reactions for production of both bulk and fine chemicals; however, selective and efficient hydrogenation of substrates with multiple functional groups is challenging. Here, we synthesize the C-doped Pd NPs confined in the hollow-structured carbons with a closed shell (C-Pd@HCS), a single hole in the shell (C-Pd@HCH), and a bowl-like shell (C-Pd@HCB). Based on the three comparative samples, void-confinement effects in phenol hydrogenation are investigated. It is found that the reaction rate of phenol hydrogenation is always decelerated gradually in the order of C-Pd@HCS > C-Pd@HCH > C-Pd@HCB, regardless of what reaction conditions are applied. The highest rate over C-Pd@HCS should be related to the void-confinement effect induced by its closed space. Moreover, the selectivity toward cyclohexanone over C-Pd@HCS/HCH/HCB is always higher than 95% due to the C-doped Pd NPs (hindering the Pd β-hydride formation and disfavoring the cyclohexanone adsorption as revealed by experimental and theoretical results).

The Role of Nitrogen‐doping in the Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenation of Phenol to Cyclohexanone with Formic Acid over Pd supported on Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Highly selective one‐step hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanone, an important intermediate in the production of nylon 6 and nylon 66, is desirable but remains a challenge. Pd nanoparticles supported on nitrogen‐ and oxygen‐functionalized carbon nanotubes (NCNTs, OCNTs) were prepared, characterized, and applied in the hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanone to study the effect of N‐doping. Almost full conversion of phenol with high selectivity to cyclohexanone was achieved over Pd/NCNT under mild reaction conditions using either H 2 or formic acid (FA) as a hydrogen source. The effects of reaction temperature and FA/phenol ratio and the reusability were investigated. Separate FA decomposition experiments without and with the addition of phenol were performed to investigate the reaction mechanism, especially the deactivation behavior. Deactivation was observed for both catalysts during the FA decomposition, while only Pd/OCNT rather than Pd/NCNT was deactivated in the transfer hydrogenation with FA and the FA decomposition in the presence of phenol, indicating the unique role of N‐doping. Therefore, we assume that deactivation is caused by the strongly bound formates on the active Pd sites, suppressing further FA decomposition and/or transfer hydrogenation on Pd. The nonplanar adsorption of phenol on NCNTs via weak O—H⋯N interactions enables the occurrence of the subsequent hydrogenation by adsorbed formate on Pd.

Abstract:The liquid phase selective hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanone has been investigated over polymeric mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (mpg-C3N4) supported Pd catalysts (Pd@mpg-C3N4). This Pd@mpg-C3N4 is shown to be highly active and promotes the selective formation of cyclohexanone (similar to 99%), an industrially important compound, in a "one-step'' method. The effects of different variables like solvent, reaction temperature, catalyst texture and catalyst pre-treatment are presented and discussed. The different adsorption capacity of mpg-C3N4 between the phenol and cyclohexanone is suggested to strongly promote the chemoselective reduction of phenol to cyclohexanone and avoid the deep hydrogenation of cyclohexanone to cyclohexanol. The hydrogenation kinetics has been adequately represented by a standard pseudo-first-order approximation, and isotopic tracing study and the transition state calculation were applied for the discussion of the possible reaction mechanism.
