Abstract:Selective hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanone is an important process in both chemical industry and renewable feedstock processing. However, direct hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanone under mild conditions over catalysts with high reactivity, selectivity, and facile preparation is still a challenge. In the present study, we report that 99% conversion and 99% selectivity can be achieved over as-prepared Pd/γ-Al2O3 catalyst under the medium of low-pressure CO2 (0.05–0.2 MPa) and H2O at 373 K. According to experiment results, ab initio calculations and in situ high-pressure FTIR measurements indicated enhanced selectivity of cyclohexanone in low-pressure CO2; this result originated from the molecular interaction between cyclohexanone and CO2 and can prevent the further hydrogenation of cyclohexanone. Notably, enhancement of selectivity to cyclohexanone in low-pressure CO2 was also achieved using commercial Pd/γ-Al2O3 and Pd/C catalysts.

Abstract:Cyclohexanone is an important intermediate in the manufacture of polyamides in chemical industry, but direct selective hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanone under mild conditions is a challenge. We report here a catalyst made of Pd nanoparticles supported on a mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride, Pd@mpg-C3N4, which was shown to be highly active and promoted the selective formation of cyclohexanone under atmospheric pressure of hydrogen in aqueous media without additives. Conversion of 99% and a selectivity higher than 99% were achieved within 2 h at 65 degrees C. The reaction can be accelerated at higher temperature, but even at room temperature, 99% conversion and 96% selectivity could still be obtained. The generality of the Pd@mpg-C3N4 catalyst for this reaction was demonstrated by selective hydrogenation of other hydroxylated aromatic compounds with similar performance.

Abstract:The hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanol under mild conditions (similar to 340 K) was achieved over Raney Ni catalyst in the aqueous phase. The adsorption-desorption properties of the reactants (phenol and H-2) and the products (cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol) on the Raney Ni catalyst are different in the aqueous phase and the organic phase. The hydrogenation rate of phenol is improved because the Raney Ni catalyst adsorbs more H-2 and phenol in water than in methanol. Meanwhile, the higher uptakes of H-2 and the lower desorption rates for cyclohexanone on the Raney Ni catalyst in the aqueous system result in the further hydrogenation of cyclohexanone to cyclohexanol.
Preparation and Catalytic Performance of Metal-Rich Pd Phosphides for the Solvent-Free Selective Hydrogenation of Chloronitrobenzene

Abstract:A facile synthesis method of palladium phosphide supported on the activated carbon was developed. The effects of Pd precursors for phosphatization, phosphatization temperature, and the ratio of hypophosphite/Pd on the generation of palladium phosphide were investigated, and a generation mechanism of the Pd3P crystal structure is proposed. The results demonstrate that only PdO, rather than Pd or PdCl2, can transform into Pd phosphide without damage to the activated carbon. The penetration of P into the Pd particle can dramatically improve the dispersion of Pd species particles on the activated carbon. The generation of Pd phosphide greatly depends on the phosphatization temperature and the ratio of hypophosphite/Pd. An intact Pd3P crystal structure was obtained when the ratio of hypophosphite/Pd reached 32 and the phosphatization temperature was above 400 °C. The Pd3P supported on the activated carbon exhibited superior catalytic performance in terms of the hydrogenation of halonitrobenzenes to haloanilines because it had few L acids and B acids sites and could not generate deficient-electron active hydrogen atoms as electrophiles.

Abstract:A new palladium-based heterogeneous material was synthesized by means of immobilization of Pd(OAc)2/1,10-phenanthroline on commercially available SiO2 and subsequent pyrolysis at 600 °C for 2 h in air, namely, a Pd@N-doped carbon/SiO2 catalyst. The obtained catalyst was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques, and was effectively applied in the highly selective hydrogenation of phenols to give the corresponding cyclohexanone derivatives with 93–98% yields at 100 °C under 0.4 MPa H2 in EtOH. It was demonstrated that introducing nitrogen could effectively promote the Pd dispersion and enhance the electronic interaction of Pd, both of which facilitate the improvement of the catalytic activity and selectivity. The likely reaction pathway was outlined to elucidate the selective hydrogenation mechanism according to experimental results.

Abstract:The liquid phase selective hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanone has been investigated over polymeric mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (mpg-C3N4) supported Pd catalysts (Pd@mpg-C3N4). This Pd@mpg-C3N4 is shown to be highly active and promotes the selective formation of cyclohexanone (similar to 99%), an industrially important compound, in a "one-step'' method. The effects of different variables like solvent, reaction temperature, catalyst texture and catalyst pre-treatment are presented and discussed. The different adsorption capacity of mpg-C3N4 between the phenol and cyclohexanone is suggested to strongly promote the chemoselective reduction of phenol to cyclohexanone and avoid the deep hydrogenation of cyclohexanone to cyclohexanol. The hydrogenation kinetics has been adequately represented by a standard pseudo-first-order approximation, and isotopic tracing study and the transition state calculation were applied for the discussion of the possible reaction mechanism.
Lanthanum-promoted Pd/Al2O3 Catalysts for Liquid Phase in Situ Hydrogenation of Phenol to Cyclohexanone

Abstract:A series of lanthanum-promoted Pd/Al2O3 catalysts (Pd/La x –Al2O3), for the liquid phase in situ hydrogenation of phenol into cyclohexanone, was prepared by the incipient wetness impregnation method. Addition of lanthanum to Pd/Al2O3 enhances the TOF of the catalyst for the liquid phase in situ hydrogenation of phenol significantly. The conversion of phenol is highly dependent upon the atomic ratio of La/Pd, but the presence of lanthanum has little effect on the selectivity of cyclohexanone. The selectivity of cyclohexanone in the liquid phase in situ hydrogenation of phenol over the Pd/La x –Al2O3 catalyst is as high as 98%, which is quite higher than the hydrogenation using H2 (67.4%). Results from BET, EDS, CO chemosorption, XRD and H2-TPR suggest that the presence of suitable amounts of lanthanum improves the Pd dispersion on the support. The peak temperature for the reduction of PdO in the H2-TPR moves to higher in the presence of lanthanum. Additionally, the Pd particles could adhere to the lanthanum rather than the Al2O3.

Abstract:The production of pure cyclohexanone under mild conditions over catalysts with high reactivity, selectivity, compatibility, stability, and low cost is still a great challenge. Here we report a hydroxyapatite-bound palladium catalyst (Pd-HAP) to demonstrate its excellent performance on phenol hydrogenation to cyclohexanone. Based on catalyst characterization, the Pd nanoclusters (approximate to 0.9nm) are highly dispersed and bound to phosphate in HAP. Only basic active sites on HAP surface are detected. At 25 degrees C and ambient H-2 pressure in water, phenol can be 100% converted into cyclohexanone with 100% selectivity. This system shows a universal applicability to temperature, pH, solvent, low H-2 purity, and pressure. The catalyst reveals high stability to be recycled without deactivation or morphology change; and Pd nano-clusters barely aggregate even at 400 degrees C. During the reaction, HAP adsorbs phenol, and Pd nanoclusters activate and spillover H-2. The mechanism is also investigated, proposed, and verified.

Abstract:A highly stable Pd-loaded N-doped carbon catalyst (ACNpd) for phenol hydrogenation was prepared from chitosan by hydrothermal carbonization. ACNpd does not require a reduction step before catalytic use due to the Pd in the as-prepared catalyst mainly exists in the form of Pd0 (80%). The carbon support involves N-containing groups such as pyridinic nitrogen and pyrrolic nitrogen, which could provide basic sites to adsorb phenol effectively. The as-fabricated ACNpd shows high catalytic performance with turnover frequency (TOF) of 29.34 h−1. Accordingly, a phenol conversion of 100% and a cyclohexanone selectivity of 99.1% are achieved in 5 h at 100 °C and 1 MPa H2. This outstanding performance is attributed to the synergetic effects of the Pd particles, the N-functional groups, and the Lewis acid sites on the support. The carbon support presents intrinsic Lewis acid sites due to its electrophilicity, and Pd doping further increases the strength of such acid sites as it causes electron-deficient structural features. Moreover, the Lewis acid sites inhibit the over-hydrogenation from cyclohexanone to cyclohexanol. This study provides new insights into the application of functional biomass-based carbon materials as catalyst supports.

Abstract:Pd-based catalysts have been widely applied in hydrogenation reactions for production of both bulk and fine chemicals; however, selective and efficient hydrogenation of substrates with multiple functional groups is challenging. Here, we synthesize the C-doped Pd NPs confined in the hollow-structured carbons with a closed shell (C-Pd@HCS), a single hole in the shell (C-Pd@HCH), and a bowl-like shell (C-Pd@HCB). Based on the three comparative samples, void-confinement effects in phenol hydrogenation are investigated. It is found that the reaction rate of phenol hydrogenation is always decelerated gradually in the order of C-Pd@HCS > C-Pd@HCH > C-Pd@HCB, regardless of what reaction conditions are applied. The highest rate over C-Pd@HCS should be related to the void-confinement effect induced by its closed space. Moreover, the selectivity toward cyclohexanone over C-Pd@HCS/HCH/HCB is always higher than 95% due to the C-doped Pd NPs (hindering the Pd β-hydride formation and disfavoring the cyclohexanone adsorption as revealed by experimental and theoretical results).

Abstract:Hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanone is a vital step in the production of synthetic fiber (nylon). In this work, a layered-structured solid acid (zirconium hydrogen phosphate, ZrHP) supported Pd catalyst was synthesized in a microwave method. The structure and property of Pd/ZrHP catalyst were characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), nitrogen adsorption-desorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) technologies. It was found that Pd/ZrHP catalyst exhibited better performance than the Pd-based catalysts supported by traditional oxide (Al2O3, SiO2, MgO), molecular sieve (H-Beta), and active carbon (XC-72) under the mild condition (100 degrees C, 1.0 MPa H-2). The specific activity of the surface Pd atom in Pd/ZrHP reached 612.2 h(-1), and it could be recycled five times without obvious deactivation. The synergistic effect between Pd metal and the acidic sites on ZrHP surface might be the main reason for the selective formation of cyclohexanone.

Abstract:A natural polymer catalyst, silica-supported chitosan palladium complex (abbr. as SiO2-CS-Pd) was found to catalyze the hydrogenation of phenol and cresols to corresponding cyclohexanones in high yield and 100% selectivity at 70 degrees C and 1.01325 x 10(5) Pa mild conditions. N/Pd molar ratio in the complex, temperature and solvents have much influence on the reaction. The reactivity order of reactants was found to be: phenol >m->p->o- The catalyst is stable during the reaction and could be repeatedly used for several times without much decrease in its catalytic activity.

Abstract:A kind of natural, sustainable, and abundant biomass, chitin, is used as support to load palladium nanoparticles catalyst (Pd–chitin) for the transfer hydrogenation of phenolic compounds to ketones in HCOONa solution. The appropriate reduction temperature in hydrogen atmosphere is a key factor to improve the coordination between oxygen-containing groups and palladium nanoparticle, which prevents palladium nanoparticles leaching during the reaction so that Pd–chitin-150 exhibits good recycling stability. More importantly, Pd–chitin-150 can be fabricated into a PTFE tube with 2 mm inner diameters as a kind of monolithic catalyst, achieving the continuous production of cyclohexanone by feeding the mixture of phenol and HCOONa solution. Abstract:In this report, a kind of mesoporous N-doped carbon (CN-x) derived from N-containing ionic-liquid (IL) precursors were synthesized, and Pd@CN-x prepared by a simple ultrasound-assisted method showed higher catalytic activity for the selective hydrogenation of phenol and its derivatives under mild reaction conditions in water than commercial Pd@C and other common Pd heterogeneous catalysts. The catalytic activities of Pd@CN-x derived from different ILs were different, and further study into the influencing factors, including physical properties, N species of CN-x, and Pd status of Pd@CN-x, were performed.

Abstract:Pd-based catalysts have been widely applied in selective hydrogenation of phenol. However, avoiding excessive hydrogenation of C=O functional groups is still challenging. Here, we synthesized Pd nanoclusters supported by N-doped C-Al 2 O 3 (Pd/CN-Al 2 O 3 ) catalyst for phenol hydrogenation. Remarkably, the cyclohexanone yield shows a volcano trend with the doping of carbon content, where Pd/CN-Al 2 O 3 with carbon content of 6.76 % (Pd/CN-Al 2 O 3 -2) exhibits the highest cyclohexanone yield. Under the optimized conditions, the phenol conversion and cyclohexanone selectivity over Pd/CN-Al 2 O 3 -2 are 99.5 % and 96.7 %, respectively. The corresponding TOF value is 1731.7 h −1 , which is 5.8 times higher than that of Pd/Al 2 O 3 (299.7 h −1 ). Mechanism studies reveal the excellent catalytic performance of Pd/CN-Al 2 O 3 -2 is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of electron-deficient Pd clusters and Lewis acid sites. Pd nanoclusters with moderate electron-deficient state and moderate Lewis acid density are beneficial to the adsorption of phenol and the desorption of cyclohexanone, thereby exhibiting the best phenol conversion and cyclohexanone selectivity. This work provides a carbon modification strategy to regulate the structure of Pd-based catalysts, which is a helpful guide for the hydrogenation reactions.

Abstract:A series of Pd catalysts were prepared on different supports (Fe2O3, SiO2, ZnO, MgO, Al2O3, carbon, and Amberlyst-45) and used in the selective hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanone in water. The Amberlyst-45 supported Pd catalyst (Pd/A-45) was highly active and selective under mild conditions (40–100 °C, 0.2–1 MPa), giving a selectivity of cyclohexanone higher than 89% even at complete conversion of phenol. Experiments with different Pd loadings (or different particle sizes) confirmed that the formation of cyclohexanone was a structure sensitive reaction, and Pd particles of 12–14 nm on Amberlyst-45 gave better selectivity and stability.

Abstract:Transfer hydrogenation is a novel and efficient method to realize the hydrogenation in different chemical reactions and exploring a simple heterogeneous catalyst with high activity is crucial. Ni/CNT was synthesized through a traditional impregnation method, and the detailed physicochemical properties were performed by means of XRD, TEM, XPS, BET, and ICP analysis. Through the screening of loading amounts, solvents, reaction temperature, and reaction time, 20% Ni/CNT achieves an almost complete conversion of phenol after 60 min at 220 °C in the absence of external hydrogen. Furthermore, the catalytic system is carried out on a variety of phenol derivatives for the generation of corresponding cyclohexanols with good to excellent results. The mechanism suggests that the hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanone is the first step, while the hydrogenation of cyclohexanone for the generation of cyclohexanol takes place in a successive step. Moreover, Ni/CNT catalyst can be magnetically recovered and reused in the next test for succeeding four times.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenations of lignin-derived phenolic compounds represent essential processes in the chemical industry, especially for production of a multitude of fine chemicals. However, selective hydrogenation of phenolic compounds in water phase suffers from low conversion. Here we report a catalyst of well-dispersed Ru clusters fixed in N-doped mesoporous hollow carbon spheres (Ru@N-CS) for enhanced cyclohexanol productivity in phenol hydrogenation at mild aqueous condition. This superhydrophobicity carbon spheres appear to selectively allow diffusion of phenol and hydrogen molecules to the electron-rich coordination unsaturated Ru active sites, while confining the reactants there to enhance its reaction probability. The Ru@N-CS catalyst can selectively hydrogenate phenol at 80 C-o and 0.5 MPa of H-2 in 30 min in aqueous medium with phenol conversions of 100% and similar to 100% cyclohexanol selectivity, corresponding to cyclohexanol productivity up to 471 per g of Ru per minute. The TOF value is up to 9980 h(-1), which 14 times more than Ru nanoparticles supported on N-doped carbon hollow spheres (Ru/N-CS). This work provides an important catalytic system for upgrading of bio-oil into value-added chemicals under mild aqueous-phase.
