Abstract:Porous Si3N4 ceramics with porosity content from 0 to 30% was fabricated by three techniques: (1) partial hot-pressing (PHP), (2) sinter-forging technique, and (3) tape casting Of beta-Si3N4 whisker. With PHP method, the porosity was controlled by the amount of powder addition and the microstructure could be similar for samples with different porosity. Applying the PHP to sintering forging, porous silicon nitride with aligned fibrous grains and controlled porosity was fabricated. Using tape-casting technique, a porous silicon nitride with aligned fibrous beta-Si3N4 grains was obtained. Porosity dependence of Young's modulus, flexural strength, and fracture toughness (K-IC), were investigated. All of these properties decreased with increasing porosity. However, the strain tolerance (fracture strength/Young's modulus) and the critical energy release rate increased with increasing porosity, but decreased with further increasing porosity. The porous Si3N4 ceramics, containing a highly aligned whisker or fibrous beta-Si3N4 grains and pores, exhibited an excellent fracture resistance and strength.
