Abstract:Concentrating photovoltaics offer a way to lower the cost of solar power. However, the existing paradigm based on precise orientation of large-area concentrator modules towards the Sun limits their deployment to large, open land areas. Here, we explore an alternate approach using high-efficiency microcell photovoltaics embedded between a pair of plastic lenslet arrays to demonstrate quasi-static concentrating photovoltaic panels <1 cm thick that accomplish full-day tracking with >200x flux concentration ratio through small (<1 cm) lateral translation at fixed latitude tilt. Per unit of installed land area, cosine projection loss for fixed microtracking concentrating photovoltaic panels is ultimately offset by improved ground coverage relative to their conventional dual-axis counterparts, enabling a ~1.9x increase in daily energy output that may open up a new opportunity for compact, high-efficiency concentrating photovoltaics to be installed on rooftops and other limited-space urban environments.
High-efficiency Köhler Photovoltaic Concentrators with External Light Confinement

Abstract:Metal grid lines are a vital element in multijunction solar cells in order to take out from the cell the generated photocurrent. Nevertheless all this implies certain shadowing factor and thus certain reflectivity on cells surface that lowers its light absorption. This reflectivity produces a loss in electrical efficiency and thus a loss in global energy production for CPV systems. We present here an optical design for recovering this portion of reflected light, and thus leading to a system efficiency increase. This new design is based on an external confinement cavity, an optical element able to redirect the light reflected by the cell towards its surface again. It has been possible thanks to the recent invention of the advanced Kohler concentrators by LPI, likely to integrate one of these cavities easily. We have proven the excellent performance of these cavities integrated in this kind of CPV modules offering outstanding results: 33.2% module electrical efficiency @Tcell=25 degrees C and relative efficiency and I-sc gains of over 6%.

Abstract:Recent development of a novel micro-scale PV/CPV technology is presented. The Wafer Integrated Micro-scale PV approach (WPV) seamlessly integrates multijunction micro-cells with a multi-functional silicon platform that provides optical micro-concentration, hybrid photovoltaic, and mechanical micro-assembly. The wafer-embedded micro-concentrating elements is shown to considerably improve the concentration-acceptance-angle product, potentially leading to dramatically reduced module materials and fabrication costs, sufficient angular tolerance for low-cost trackers, and an ultra-compact optical architecture, which makes the WPV module compatible with commercial flat panel infrastructures. The PV/CPV hybrid architecture further allows the collection of both direct and diffuse sunlight, thus extending the geographic and market domains for cost-effective PV system deployment. The WPV approach can potentially benefits from both the high performance of multijunction cells and the low cost of flat plate Si PV systems.
Design and demonstration of ultra-compact microcell concentrating photovoltaics for space

Abstract:Optical concentration can improve the efficiency and reduce the cost of photovoltaic power but has traditionally been too bulky, massive, and unreliable for use in space. Here, we explore a new ultra-compact and low-mass microcell concentrating photovoltaic (µCPV) paradigm for space based on the monolithic integration of transfer-printed microscale solar cells and molded microconcentrator optics. We derive basic bounds on the compactness as a function of geometric concentration ratio and angular acceptance, and show that a simple reflective parabolic concentrator provides the best combination of specific power, angular acceptance, and overall fabrication simplicity. This architecture is simulated in detail and validated experimentally with a µCPV prototype that is less than 1.7 mm thick and operates with six, 650 µm square triple-junction microcells at a geometric concentration ratio of 18.4×. In outdoor testing, the system achieves a terrestrial power conversion efficiency of 25.8 ± 0.2% over a ±9.5° angular range, resulting in a specific power of approximately 111 W/kg. These results lay the groundwork for future space µCPV systems and establish a realistic path to exceed 350 W/kg specific power at >33% power conversion efficiency by scaling down to even smaller microcells.

Abstract:A microtracking concentrator photovoltaics (CPV) module with a bi-convex aspheric lens array was designed, and its performance was numerically and experimentally verified. The lens shape was optimized considering the yearly incidence characteristics of direct solar radiation. The lens optimized at 127 × was found to converge 68.7% of the yearly cumulative direct solar radiation to solar cells and to be robust against changes in installation azimuth and tilt angles. The incidence-angle characteristics of a prototype lens agreed well with the design analysis. In an outdoor test using a prototype microtracking CPV module with an optimized lens and a triple-junction solar cell, the power generation was 1.32 times higher than that of the 17%-efficient Si cell and nearly 30% module conversion efficiency was achieved under clear sky conditions.

Abstract:Micro-concentrator photovoltaics (micro-CPV) is a cutting-edge CPV approach aimed at increasing the efficiency and reducing the cost and carbon footprint of solar electricity by downscaling concentrator solar cells and optics. The reduced size of micro-CPV provides several advantages over conventional CPV, including shorter optical paths and lower temperature and resistive losses in the cell, resulting in higher electrical efficiencies. This may increase the energy yield per area compared to conventional CPV or silicon modules. Cost reduction is achieved through material savings and the use of continuous manufacturing methods enabled by the tiny size of cells and optics, such as roll-to-roll (R2R) and roll-to-plate (R2P) ultraviolet (UV) imprinting for optics production. However, adapting these processes to large-area arrays of Fresnel micro-lenses with no wasted areas and high efficiency remains a challenge. In this study, we present a comprehensive methodology for the development of micro-CPV optics with full area coverage—from design and mastering to up-scaling, tooling, and replication. The methodology involves designing a non-rotationally symmetric elementary insert tailored to ultraviolet imprinting. Crucially, multiple inserts are originated via precision machining and recombined to form a single array master mold without wasted areas. The master is then replicated into a flexible working stamp for UV imprinting of Fresnel lens arrays, utilizing different UV curable materials. The functional characterization of the lenses demonstrates an optical efficiency of 80% at 178X under collimated white light, representing the highest effective concentration achieved using UV-imprinted Fresnel lenses. Furthermore, initial reliability tests confirm the absence of degradation during thermal cycling or outdoor exposure. This methodology paves the way for continuous high-throughput manufacturing of micro-lens arrays using R2R or R2P methods, presenting a significant step forward in micro-CPV.

Abstract:Concentrating PV requires expensive solar tracking equipment, and the uneven flux distribution related to the angle of incidence can be detrimental to the cells. This paper proposes a non-tracking, low-concentrating, photovoltaic system with a lens. Unlike the composite paraboloidal concentrator, the new concentrator achieves a larger light reception range, and its mounting angle can be adjusted only four times per year to concentrate light efficiently and uniformly on the cell surface for 5 h a day, with an average optical efficiency and uniformity of heat flow distribution of 0.77 and 0.75, respectively. FLUENT is used to simulate the temperature of the concentrator. The shadow area on the cell surface of the composite paraboloidal concentrator results in the maximum temperature discrepancy of 68.53 degrees C. As a result of the large temperature difference, air diffuses more quickly in the cavity, further exacerbating the inhomogeneity of the surface temperature distribution, which stands at 0.34 at this point. The maximum temperature discrepancy on the cell surface of the new concentrator is only 18.93 degrees C and it achieves the uniformity of temperature distribution above 0.89. The results show that the comprehensive performance of this new concentrator is better than that of the composite paraboloidal concentrator. (C) 2022 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:Traditional concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) systems utilize multijunction cells to minimize thermalization losses, but cannot efficiently capture diffuse sunlight, which contributes to a high levelized cost of energy (LCOE) and limits their use to geographical regions with high direct sunlight insolation. Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) harness light generated by luminophores embedded in a light-trapping waveguide to concentrate light onto smaller cells. LSCs can absorb both direct and diffuse sunlight, and thus can operate as flat plate receivers at a fixed tilt and with a conventional module form factor. However, current LSCs experience significant power loss through parasitic luminophore absorption and incomplete light trapping by the optical waveguide. Here we introduce a tandem LSC device architecture that overcomes both of these limitations, consisting of a PLMA polymer layer with embedded CdSe/CdS quantum dot (QD) luminophores and InGaP micro-cells, which serve as a high bandgap absorber on top of a conventional Si photovoltaic. We experimentally synthesize CdSe/CdS QDs with exceptionally high quantum-yield (99%) and ultra-narrowband emission optimally matched to fabricated III-V InGaP micro-cells. Using a Monte Carlo ray-tracing model, we show the radiative limit power conversion efficiency for a module with these components to be 30.8% diffuse sunlight conditions. These results indicate that a tandem LSC-on-Si architecture could significantly improve upon the efficiency of a conventional Si photovoltaic module with simple and straightforward alterations of the module lamination steps of a Si photovoltaic manufacturing process, with promise for widespread module deployment across diverse geographical regions and energy markets.

Abstract:Significance Concentrator photovoltaic (CPV) systems, wherein light focuses onto multijunction solar cells, offer the highest efficiencies in converting sunlight to electricity. The performance is intrinsically limited, however, by an inability to capture diffuse illumination, due to narrow acceptance angles of the concentrator optics. Here we demonstrate concepts where flat-plate solar cells mount onto the backplanes of the most sophisticated CPV modules to yield an additive contribution to the overall output. Outdoor testing results with two different hybrid module designs demonstrate absolute gains in average daily efficiencies of between 1.02% and 8.45% depending on weather conditions. The findings suggest pathways to significant improvements in the efficiencies, with economics that could potentially expand their deployment to a wide range of geographic locations.

Abstract:A hybrid of microlens structure and curved surface may produce high value-added micro-optic performance. Hence, the microlens array is proposed on macro curved glass substrate of thin film solar cell. The objective is to understand how the micro-optic behavior of microlens curved array influences indoor power conversion efficiency and outdoor electricity generation. First, the absorptivities of visible light and infrared light were analyzed in connection with the curved microlens sizes; then the microlens curved glass substrate was fabricated by a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) micro-grinding with micro diamond wheel V-tip; finally, its photovoltaic properties and electricity generation were measured, respectively. It is shown that the microlens curved surface may strongly absorb and scatter light to solar cell. It increases the absorptivity of visible light against plane surface, but it decreases the one of infrared light against microlens surface. When it is applied to solar cell, it enhances the power conversion efficiency by 3.4-10.6% under oblique illumination. When it is applied to solar device, it increases the electricity generation of daylight by 119-106% against microlens surface and by 260-419% against traditional plane surface, respectively. The surprising finding is that it produces much larger electricity generation during cloudy day than during sunny day, but traditional plane surface does not so. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Based on non-imaging optical, multi-junction (MJ) concentrator solar cell and sun-tracking technology's concentration photovoltaic (CPV) solar system can obtain higher conversion efficiency compared with traditional crystalline silicon solar system. This paper introduces a novel CPV system that base on transflective hybrid concentrator and polar linkage tracker. Compared to other concentrating technology, the transflective concentrator has larger tolerance angle that more than 1 degree and the linkage tracker has more simple structure thus more suit for used in the limited area. Through the outdoor test, the module can achieved more than 30% efficiency in the 1040x suns and the system can reach to the highest efficiency that is 29.6% in winter. The last, the reason of decrease the system efficiency also been analysis and discuss.

Abstract:Superior bandgap tunability enables solution-processed halide perovskite a promising candidate for multi-junction photovoltaics (PVs). Particularly, optically coupling wide-gap perovskite by stacking with commercially available PVs such as silicon and CIGS (also known as 4-terminal tandem) simplifies the technology transfer process, and further advances the commercialization potential of perovskite technology. However, compared with matured PV materials and the phase-pure FAPbI3 , wide-gap perovskite still suffers from huge voltage deficits. Here, the authors take advantage of the synergetic effect behind a sequential fluoride and organic ammonium salt surface passivation strategy to control non-radiative energy losses, and obtained a 17.7% efficiency in infrared-transparent wide-gap perovskite solar cells (21.1% for opaque device), and achieved efficiencies of over 25% when stacked with commercial Si and CIGS products with original PCEs of 18-20% under a 4-terminal working condition.

Abstract:Concentrator photovoltaics (CPV) can efficiently convert light into electricity; however, conventional CPVs require large and heavy tracking systems. Microtracking CPVs (MTCPVs) can solve this significant problem. Most MTCPV systems have a limited angle of incidence (AOI). If diffuse light was used, MTCPV required traveling light from top to bottom. In this study, a spherical-lens-based microtracking CPV (SMTCPV) with a pin-type second optical element (SOE) was developed. In SMTCPV, the light travel light from above to below. Pin-type SOEs were inserted between the spherical lenses, thus increasing the acceptable wide AOI. Optical analysis and calculations of the interaction between overlapping spherical lenses and pin-type SOEs were performed. An optical efficiency of 59% was maintained at any angle when the gap was considered. The maximum AOI was 64.7° in the direction of adjacent spherical lenses and 90° in the gap direction.

Efficient solar collection beyond the etendue limit

Abstract:Photovoltaics (PV) are a versatile and compact route to harness solar power. One critical challenge with current PV is persevering the optimal panel orientation angle with respect to the sun for efficient energy conversion. We experimentally demonstrate a bespoke array of multi-element telecentric optical lenses that allow for a greatly increased open circuit voltage (Voc) at solar incidence angle of between +/-80 degrees compared to a standard panel. Our prototype lens-let shows a 132% increase in Voc over a full day, at optical incidence angles of +/-80 degrees. This many element array provides increased field of view without breaking the conservation of etendue. Our prototype indicates that this lens-let array could potentially be mass produced and be readily installed onto any PV system.

Wide angle tolerant solar spectral splitter for lateral tandem solar cells

Abstract:Maximizing the power conversion efficiency of solar cells plays a crucial role in upscaling solar energy production. Combining two or more solar cells with different bandgaps into a multi-junction tandem solar cells lowers thermalization losses and increases the power conversion efficiency. Whilst the best efficiencies have been achieved by vertically stacking solar cells, the fabrication process is technologically demanding and leads to high production costs. Novel photovoltaic materials such as organic photovoltaics allow solution processing, which enables the cost effective production of lateral multijunctions, where the single subcells are aligned side by side. To fully unlock their optimal performance, lateral tandems require careful light management, redirecting different spectral bands to the corresponding solar cell. So far, solar spectral splitters suffered from a strong angle dependency, which caused a degradation in performance at the slightest deviation from normal incidence. In this contribution, we reduce this limitation and achieve an enhancement in the conversion efficiency across a wide range of incident angles by inverse designing a solar spectral splitter comprised of two free-form microstructured surfaces on the top and bottom of a supporting glass substrate. Moreover, thanks to the versatility of our methodology, we can tailor the angle-dependent functionality of our device. As such, we also design devices that are optimized to provide enhanced performance at certain oblique angles, which correspond to different times of the day, e.g., when the unit price of energy is higher.

Abstract:Low-concentration photovoltaic compound parabolic concentrators (PV-CPC) are a significant addition of solar cell application, especially in Building Integrated Photovoltaics, because it does not need a tracking system and can be installed in a stationary condition. However, higher concentrations correspond with the smaller half acceptance angle, which is a limitation but can be improved by a lens-walled structure. In this paper, to validate the rationale of this structure, a low-concentration PV-CPC using an acrylic lens-walled structure module was designed and fabricated with low-cost materials. The corresponding simulation was also performed with different materials to determine whether the factor that the truncation had a significant effect. The observed outcome implied that the low-concentration PV-CPC using an acrylic lens-walled structure has a larger half acceptance angle than the mirror CPC, and that a maximum optical efficiency of more than 80% can be achieved using Schott BK glass as the lens wall material. The lens-walled structure improved the angular acceptance of stationary low-concentration PV-CPC, providing a basis for further research. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract:Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) offer an attractive approach to combine spectral and spatial concentration of both direct and diffuse light without the expensive tracking system. In this study, different size glass laminated luminescent solar concentrators (GL-LSCs) of 7.8 x 7.8 cm(2), 15.6 x 15.6 cm(2), 31.2 x 31.2 cm(2) and 61 x 122 cm(2) were fabricated by using fluorescent dyes Lumogen Red 305 and Yellow 083, ultra-white glass and commercial mono-crystalline silicon solar cells. With the size increase, the output power of the GL-LSCs increases, but the power conversion efficiency (PCE) decreases rapidly due to the transport losses and re-absorption of luminescent materials. As a result, a series of GL-LSCs with bottom-mounted PV cells were fabricated to enhance the PCE. The relationship between the area of luminescent waveguide and the gain of the bottom-mounted PV cells was investigated for the optimization of the GL-LSCs performance. Among them, a highest gain of 1.38 in power over the bare PV cells was obtained with PV cell coverage of 4.54%. A highest PCE of 2.28% was achieved with PV cell coverage of 11.32%. It was found that the design with PV cell coverage of 9.07% have the lowest cost of $ 1.25/We with a PCE of 2.02% and a gain of 1.27. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this paper we present and experimentally validate a low-cost design of a spectral splitting concentrator for the efficient conversion of solar energy. The optical device consists of a dispersive prismatic lens made of polycarbonate designed to simultaneously concentrate the solar light and split it into its spectral components. With respect to our previous implementation, this device concentrates the light along two axes and generates a light pattern compatible with the dimensions of a set of concentrating photovoltaic cells while providing a higher concentration ratio. The mathematical framework and the constructive approach used for the design are presented and the device performance is simulated using a ray-tracing software. We obtain spectral separation in the visible range within a 3x1 cm2 area and a maximum concentration of 210x for a single wavelength. The device is fabricated by injection molding and its performance is experimentally investigated. We measure an optical transmissivity above 90% in the range 400-800 nm and we observe a spectral distribution in good accordance with simulations. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of the device for cost effective high efficiency concentrated photovoltaic systems.

Reliable Concentrated Photovoltaic System with Compound Concentrator

Abstract:Concentrated photovoltaic systems (CPVSs) draw more and more attention because of high photovoltaic conversion efficiency, low consumption of solar cell, and low cost of power generation. However, the fallibility of the tracker in such systems has hindered their practical application for more than twenty years. The tracker is indispensable for a CPVS since only normal-incident sunlight can be focused on the solar cell chips, even a slight deviation of incident light will result in a significant loss of solar radiation, and hence a distinct decrease in electricity output. Generally, the more accurate the tracker is, the more reliable the system is. However, it is not exactly the case for a CPVS reliability, because the more accurate the tracker is, the better environment it demands. A CPVS is usually has to subjected to harsh environmental conditions, such as strong wind, heavy rain or snow, and huge changes of temperature, which leads to the invalidation of the system's high-accuracy tracker. Hence, the reliability of a CPVS cannot be improved only by enhancing the tracker's accuracy. In this paper, a novel compound concentrator, combination of Fresnel lens and photo-funnel, has been adopted in a prototype CPVS. Test results show that the compound concentrator can relax the angle tolerance from one tenth to five degrees of arc at 400 suns, which can help a CPVS endure serious environment and remain its reliability over long period. The CPVS with compound concentrator is attractive for commercial application.
