Abstract:Metal grid lines are a vital element in multijunction solar cells in order to take out from the cell the generated photocurrent. Nevertheless all this implies certain shadowing factor and thus certain reflectivity on cells surface that lowers its light absorption. This reflectivity produces a loss in electrical efficiency and thus a loss in global energy production for CPV systems. We present here an optical design for recovering this portion of reflected light, and thus leading to a system efficiency increase. This new design is based on an external confinement cavity, an optical element able to redirect the light reflected by the cell towards its surface again. It has been possible thanks to the recent invention of the advanced Kohler concentrators by LPI, likely to integrate one of these cavities easily. We have proven the excellent performance of these cavities integrated in this kind of CPV modules offering outstanding results: 33.2% module electrical efficiency @Tcell=25 degrees C and relative efficiency and I-sc gains of over 6%.

Abstract:Concentrator photovoltaics (CPV) can efficiently convert light into electricity; however, conventional CPVs require large and heavy tracking systems. Microtracking CPVs (MTCPVs) can solve this significant problem. Most MTCPV systems have a limited angle of incidence (AOI). If diffuse light was used, MTCPV required traveling light from top to bottom. In this study, a spherical-lens-based microtracking CPV (SMTCPV) with a pin-type second optical element (SOE) was developed. In SMTCPV, the light travel light from above to below. Pin-type SOEs were inserted between the spherical lenses, thus increasing the acceptable wide AOI. Optical analysis and calculations of the interaction between overlapping spherical lenses and pin-type SOEs were performed. An optical efficiency of 59% was maintained at any angle when the gap was considered. The maximum AOI was 64.7° in the direction of adjacent spherical lenses and 90° in the gap direction.

Abstract:Significance Concentrator photovoltaic (CPV) systems, wherein light focuses onto multijunction solar cells, offer the highest efficiencies in converting sunlight to electricity. The performance is intrinsically limited, however, by an inability to capture diffuse illumination, due to narrow acceptance angles of the concentrator optics. Here we demonstrate concepts where flat-plate solar cells mount onto the backplanes of the most sophisticated CPV modules to yield an additive contribution to the overall output. Outdoor testing results with two different hybrid module designs demonstrate absolute gains in average daily efficiencies of between 1.02% and 8.45% depending on weather conditions. The findings suggest pathways to significant improvements in the efficiencies, with economics that could potentially expand their deployment to a wide range of geographic locations.

Abstract:Concentrating photovoltaics offer a way to lower the cost of solar power. However, the existing paradigm based on precise orientation of large-area concentrator modules towards the Sun limits their deployment to large, open land areas. Here, we explore an alternate approach using high-efficiency microcell photovoltaics embedded between a pair of plastic lenslet arrays to demonstrate quasi-static concentrating photovoltaic panels <1 cm thick that accomplish full-day tracking with >200x flux concentration ratio through small (<1 cm) lateral translation at fixed latitude tilt. Per unit of installed land area, cosine projection loss for fixed microtracking concentrating photovoltaic panels is ultimately offset by improved ground coverage relative to their conventional dual-axis counterparts, enabling a ~1.9x increase in daily energy output that may open up a new opportunity for compact, high-efficiency concentrating photovoltaics to be installed on rooftops and other limited-space urban environments.

Abstract:Micro-concentrator photovoltaics (micro-CPV) is a cutting-edge CPV approach aimed at increasing the efficiency and reducing the cost and carbon footprint of solar electricity by downscaling concentrator solar cells and optics. The reduced size of micro-CPV provides several advantages over conventional CPV, including shorter optical paths and lower temperature and resistive losses in the cell, resulting in higher electrical efficiencies. This may increase the energy yield per area compared to conventional CPV or silicon modules. Cost reduction is achieved through material savings and the use of continuous manufacturing methods enabled by the tiny size of cells and optics, such as roll-to-roll (R2R) and roll-to-plate (R2P) ultraviolet (UV) imprinting for optics production. However, adapting these processes to large-area arrays of Fresnel micro-lenses with no wasted areas and high efficiency remains a challenge. In this study, we present a comprehensive methodology for the development of micro-CPV optics with full area coverage—from design and mastering to up-scaling, tooling, and replication. The methodology involves designing a non-rotationally symmetric elementary insert tailored to ultraviolet imprinting. Crucially, multiple inserts are originated via precision machining and recombined to form a single array master mold without wasted areas. The master is then replicated into a flexible working stamp for UV imprinting of Fresnel lens arrays, utilizing different UV curable materials. The functional characterization of the lenses demonstrates an optical efficiency of 80% at 178X under collimated white light, representing the highest effective concentration achieved using UV-imprinted Fresnel lenses. Furthermore, initial reliability tests confirm the absence of degradation during thermal cycling or outdoor exposure. This methodology paves the way for continuous high-throughput manufacturing of micro-lens arrays using R2R or R2P methods, presenting a significant step forward in micro-CPV.

Abstract:The compound parabolic concentrator (CPC) is a core technology in the field of solar concentration. Nevertheless, it only has one degree of freedom in the choice of its half-acceptance angle. In this study, extending the idea of the three-dimensional CPC, a design method for new kinds of concentrators having a CPC shape at each profile with various acceptance angles in all directions is proposed. The feature of this method is that the receiver can take any shape. Here, elliptical and rectangular receivers are assumed, and the shape and concentration performance of the concentrators with multiple CPC profiles and an elliptical receiver (MultiPro-ECPCs) and the concentrators with multiple CPC profiles and a rectangular receiver (MultiPro-RCPCs) are derived. The new designs are compared to the conventional CPC and a mirrorless flat receiver through ray-tracing simulations in terms of energy distribution on the receiver, optical efficiency, and optical concentration ratio based on axial and solar angles. The results show that in terms of optical efficiency, the MultiPro-RCPCs cover a wider range of incident angles after the 3DCPC. In terms of the optical concentration ratio, the MultiPro-ECPC with a longitudinal half-acceptance angle of 15° has the highest peak value of 19.5, followed by the MultiPro-RCPC. This study enlightens that with the concentration system settings adapted to the acceptance range of the proposed concentrators, a higher concentration can be achieved with the MultiPro-ECPC and MultiPro-RCPC compared to the conventional CPC.

Abstract:A lens-walled compound parabolic concentrator (lens-walled CPC) has a larger half acceptance angle than a mirror CPC for the same geometrical concentration ratio of 2.5X, so it would be more suitable for the building-integrated application as a stationary solar concentrator. Based on our previous work, an outdoor experimental study of a sample trough lens-walled CPC PV module under sunny condition in Nottingham is described. The experimental results provide the verification of actual larger half acceptance angle obtained by the lens-walled CPC in comparison with a mirror CPC of the same size. Along with the analysis of the projected incidence angles, the experimental results also indicate that the lens-walled CPC of 2.5X orientated east–west may be a good choice for high latitude area as a stationary solar concentrator to give a satisfactory whole year performance.

Abstract:A hybrid of microlens structure and curved surface may produce high value-added micro-optic performance. Hence, the microlens array is proposed on macro curved glass substrate of thin film solar cell. The objective is to understand how the micro-optic behavior of microlens curved array influences indoor power conversion efficiency and outdoor electricity generation. First, the absorptivities of visible light and infrared light were analyzed in connection with the curved microlens sizes; then the microlens curved glass substrate was fabricated by a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) micro-grinding with micro diamond wheel V-tip; finally, its photovoltaic properties and electricity generation were measured, respectively. It is shown that the microlens curved surface may strongly absorb and scatter light to solar cell. It increases the absorptivity of visible light against plane surface, but it decreases the one of infrared light against microlens surface. When it is applied to solar cell, it enhances the power conversion efficiency by 3.4-10.6% under oblique illumination. When it is applied to solar device, it increases the electricity generation of daylight by 119-106% against microlens surface and by 260-419% against traditional plane surface, respectively. The surprising finding is that it produces much larger electricity generation during cloudy day than during sunny day, but traditional plane surface does not so. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:A novel solar concentrated PV-thermal (CPV-T) system using nano-fluid spectrum filter (NSF) and with high solar concentrating uniformity is proposed in this study. The indium tin oxide/ethylene glycol (ITO/EG) nano-fluid used in the CPV-T system is experimentally prepared and tested. The results indicate that the average transmission and absorption rates of the NSF are 69.1% and 30.9%. The optical estimate results of the CPV-T system reveal a relatively high solar concentrating uniformity. The solar tracking deviation evaluation results show that when the north-south tracking deviation is less than 0.3°, the optical efficiency of the CPV-T system can be greater than 0.834. The thermodynamic estimate results show that the maximum output power and photoelectric efficiency of the PV module are 1769.9 W and 30.3%. The thermal and exergy efficiencies of the CPV-T system are 19.4% and 16.7%. The thermal efficiency of the CPV-T system can be improved by increasing the inlet nano-fluid flow rate and environmental temperature or by decreasing the inlet nano-fluid temperature and convectional heat transfer coefficient (CHTC). The system exergy efficiency will be improved with the increase of the inlet nano-fluid flow rate or with the decreases of the inlet nano-fluid temperature, environmental temperature and CHTC.

Abstract:Optical concentration can improve the efficiency and reduce the cost of photovoltaic power but has traditionally been too bulky, massive, and unreliable for use in space. Here, we explore a new ultra-compact and low-mass microcell concentrating photovoltaic (µCPV) paradigm for space based on the monolithic integration of transfer-printed microscale solar cells and molded microconcentrator optics. We derive basic bounds on the compactness as a function of geometric concentration ratio and angular acceptance, and show that a simple reflective parabolic concentrator provides the best combination of specific power, angular acceptance, and overall fabrication simplicity. This architecture is simulated in detail and validated experimentally with a µCPV prototype that is less than 1.7 mm thick and operates with six, 650 µm square triple-junction microcells at a geometric concentration ratio of 18.4×. In outdoor testing, the system achieves a terrestrial power conversion efficiency of 25.8 ± 0.2% over a ±9.5° angular range, resulting in a specific power of approximately 111 W/kg. These results lay the groundwork for future space µCPV systems and establish a realistic path to exceed 350 W/kg specific power at >33% power conversion efficiency by scaling down to even smaller microcells.

Abstract:This paper presents a solar concentrating photovoltaic-thermal (CPV-T) module for building louver which is designed to provide electricity and heat for buildings by capturing solar radiation in building vertical space. A specially designed concentrating blade used for louver is combined with a PV-T module. The concentrating blade enables incident sunlight converge to a solar cell, thus obtaining electricity. The heat generated in the solar cell is taken away and collected by thermal fluid, by which the deficiency of increasing extra cooling demand in summer existing in traditional building integrated photovoltaic is overcome. The concentrating blade is designed to work under the solar incident angle of 0–90°, and its high-efficiency photovoltaic-thermal working range is 20–70°. Optical simulations are conducted to illustrate the characteristics of the concentrating blade. Remarkably, the maximum geometrical concentration ratio is 2.96 at the incident angle of 20°. Over a wide range of incident angles between 12.5° and 52.5°, the geometrical concentration ratio maintains above 2. Finally, experiments are carried out to test the electrical and thermal performance of the CPV-T module. The results illustrate that its overall efficiency can reach above 55 % for nearly 5 h without tracking during the all-day experiment.

Abstract:The optics is the component that most affects the concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) system performance, depending above all on the concentration factor and optical efficiency. Hence, a basic aspect is the concentrated solar flux measure on the receiving area, the evaluation of which is principally realized by indirect measurement methods. First, a literature review on indirect and direct methods used for the evaluation of concentrated solar flux and optical parameters is presented in this paper. The experimental measurement procedure, which is able to evaluate the optical parameters and concentrated solar flux in CPV systems, is also presented. The main steps of this procedure are represented by experimental system setup, sensor selection for concentrated solar flux estimation, identification of all the factors affecting optical performances, and development of an experimental campaign and output analysis. In particular, the optical characterization results of a CPV system are obtained by means of in-depth experimental analysis using Triple-Junction (TJ) solar cells with areas of 5.5 × 5.5 mm2 and 10 × 10 mm2. Three different setups have been analyzed related to primary and secondary optics composition. The main aim of this paper is the determination of a direct measuring technique, rarely adopted in literature in comparison to the established techniques, that is able to evaluate experimentally the optical parameter values and that can be standardized for other CPV systems. In particular, equations that link the optical concentration factor (C) and efficiency (ηopt) with focal distance (h) represent the fundamental results. They can be used for similar point-focus configurations presenting the same TJ cell size and ranges of C, ηopt and h. Finally, the experimental results of the direct method are compared with those of an indirect method adopting the same CPV system and operational conditions.

Abstract:A novel solar concentrating PV and thermal (CPVT) combined system with beam splitter and compact concentrator structure is proposed in this study. The system structure and its design method are provided. The optical filter is designed and the incident light angle effect on the beam splitting performance is investigated. Solar concentrating simulations are conducted and the relevant results reveal that the CPVT combined system can provide a high solar concentration uniformity. The evaluation results of configuration and optical analyses indicate that when all the other parameters are settled, the optimal installation height of the solar receiver tube is 923.0 mm. The influence study of sun tracking accuracy on the system optical performance is launched. It is concluded that when the tracking error increases to 1.0°, the overall optical efficiency is 66.2%. The thermodynamic analysis results indicate that the PV conversion and overall energy efficiencies of the CPVT system are 30.5% and 26.6%, which are both higher than those of the normal CPV system. Moreover, the operating temperature effect investigation of solar thermal receiver tube is conducted. The results show that an optimal solar thermal receiver tube temperature (356.0 °C) exists, which can result in the maximum total output power.

Reliable Concentrated Photovoltaic System with Compound Concentrator

Abstract:Concentrated photovoltaic systems (CPVSs) draw more and more attention because of high photovoltaic conversion efficiency, low consumption of solar cell, and low cost of power generation. However, the fallibility of the tracker in such systems has hindered their practical application for more than twenty years. The tracker is indispensable for a CPVS since only normal-incident sunlight can be focused on the solar cell chips, even a slight deviation of incident light will result in a significant loss of solar radiation, and hence a distinct decrease in electricity output. Generally, the more accurate the tracker is, the more reliable the system is. However, it is not exactly the case for a CPVS reliability, because the more accurate the tracker is, the better environment it demands. A CPVS is usually has to subjected to harsh environmental conditions, such as strong wind, heavy rain or snow, and huge changes of temperature, which leads to the invalidation of the system's high-accuracy tracker. Hence, the reliability of a CPVS cannot be improved only by enhancing the tracker's accuracy. In this paper, a novel compound concentrator, combination of Fresnel lens and photo-funnel, has been adopted in a prototype CPVS. Test results show that the compound concentrator can relax the angle tolerance from one tenth to five degrees of arc at 400 suns, which can help a CPVS endure serious environment and remain its reliability over long period. The CPVS with compound concentrator is attractive for commercial application.
Design optimization and optical performance analysis on multi-sectioned compound parabolic concentrator with plane absorber

Abstract:The traditional standard compound parabolic concentrator (S-CPC) lacks flexibility in production and application due to its high-precision curved surface structure, and the extremely non-uniform flux distribution on the absorber greatly affects the stability of system. A novel method for performance optimization design of multi-sectioned compound parabolic concentrator (M-CPC) based on exhaustive algorithm was presented in this paper. The prototype model was established according to the outcome of program calculation, and the concentrated optical path of the designed model was studied by laser verification experiment integrating precision apparatus. The result demonstrated that the intersection position on solar cell surface obtained from calculation outcomes were consistent with the experimental consequences. Five kinds of optimized M-CPCs were designed and compared with S-CPC in optical performance. It is found that M-CPC4 is the optimal structure in this design, whose improvement ratio of average optical efficiency and acceptance angle are 1.375% and 47% respectively compared with S-CPC. Moreover, M-CPC4 could significantly reduce the higher energy peak while ameliorating the non-uniform flux distribution on absorber. This will enable the work system to maintain a relatively stable temperature gradient. The proposed design method could provide technical reference on efficient optical efficiency and structure optimization for M-CPC.

Abstract:A novel asymmetric lens-walled compound parabolic concentrator (ALCPC) for integration with the building south wall was proposed and manufactured. Besides of the asymmetric lens-walled structure, the special rotation angle at the bottom is also introduced to optimize the performance. The electrical and optical performance of the ALCPC-PV was detailed analyzed through the experiment and ray tracing simulation. The indoor experiment was conducted by a solar simulator (Oriel So13A Model 90943A) from Newport Corporation at the dark environment with the temperature of 25 degrees C. Form the experiment results, the ALCPC increases the maximum power by a ratio of 1.74x compared to the bare cell. The decrease of the geometric concentration ratio is mainly due to manufacturing errors, mismatch losses, series resistance losses, etc. The optical performance of the ALCPC was also investigated by the software Lighttools, and the optical efficiency and the distribution percentage of the energy collected through the total internal reflection and the specular reflection at different incidence angles are identified at various incidence angles. A good agreement is observed between the experiment results and the ray tracing results. The optical efficiency at the incidence angles of 0-60 degrees is all within 90% of its peak value which means that the proposed ALCPC can achieve 60 degrees acceptance angle with high optical efficiency that it shows a good potential as a static concentrator for the building south wall integration.

Abstract:A conventional mirror compound parabolic concentrator (CPC) is limited by its half acceptance angle when pursuing a large geometrical concentration ratio with no tracking. A solid CPC, which is made from solid dielectric materials without notches, can achieve a larger half acceptance angle compared with the conventional mirror CPC of the same geometrical concentration ratio, which is attributed to the optical refraction caused by the dielectric material. However, solid CPCs are heavier and costlier. This paper presents a preliminary experiment on a novel lens-walled CPC. An experimental comparison of the conventional mirror and solid CPCs and the lens-walled CPC with the same geometrical concentration ratios of 2.5 is given for different incidence angles. Here the conventional mirror CPC chose the evaporated aluminium coating as the reflection layer, for short conventional CPC. Transparent acrylic was chosen as both the dielectric material and lens material. The three CPCs were all attached to a PV cell. Through the output characteristics of the cell, the optical performances of these CPCs can be obtained. The results showed that when the incidence angle was smaller than 35 degrees, the optical efficiency of the lens-walled CPC remained above 46.7% and was more stable against incidence angle changes compared with the conventional CPC. It also weighed and cost less than the solid CPC. Thus, lens-walled CPC adequately combines the advantages of conventional and solid CPCs, and has great potential for use in large-scale practical applications.

Abstract:A solar concentration photovoltaic (CPV) system with compact linear Fresnel reflector (CLFR) concentrator is described in this paper. The design approach of the CPV system is introduced. Four different CLFRs are designed and compared, including one complete type and three hybrid type CLFRs. In order to evaluate the optical performance of the CPV system, solar concentration processes of the four CLFRs are simulated by using the MCRT method. The results indicate that the complete type CLFR (CLFR-c) has the highest concentrated solar radiation uniformity. An experimental set-up is built to carry out the evaluation of actual optical performance of the CLFR-c and a good agreement between the simulation and measurement results is demonstrated. The optical parameter analysis results of the CPV system reveal that the optimal solar panel height exists, which can result in the maximum ground utilization and concentration ratios. The influence of sun-tracking accuracy on the optical efficiency of the CPV system is analyzed. The results indicate that the normalized optical efficiency of the CLFR-c concentrator is 0.89 when the tracking error is 0.2°. The preliminary PV performance test results reveal a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 15.9% for the PV cell module installed on the solar CPV system.

Abstract:We presented a family of new 3D concentrators. Simulations showed they could significantly increase the illumination on objective plane compared with 2D trough concentrators. A 3D concentrator prototype with a nominal 35�� half acceptance angle was made. Its performance was tested under an indoor solar simulator and by on-site experiment. Under solar simulator, a low cost poly-silicon solar cell coupled with a 3D concentrator achieved a 2.25 times of maximum output power compared with a similar bare solar cell. In the on-site experiment, poly-silicon solar cell with a 3D compound parabolic based reflective concentrator gained an average of 1.4 times maximum output power when the incidence sunlight within the critical angle. ?
