Abstract:In order to increase the output power of solar cells,a 3D photovoltaic concentrator based on compound paraboloid is designed.Using ray-tracing software,the performances of the new designed 3D concentrator are compared with that of traditional 2D trough collector.The new concentrator's concentration efficiency is more than 90% and concentration ratio is really high when incident rays within acceptance angle of 3D concentrator.Then a concentrator prototype with a nominal half acceptance angle of 35 ° was made and mounted with a poly-silicon solar cell.Under a 400 W/m2 solar radiation,the low cost poly-silicon solar cell achieved a 2.25 times maximum output power comparing with the same bare cell.
Simulation and on-site performance of a novel 3D concentrator for photovoltaic application

Abstract:We presented a family of new 3D concentrators. Simulations showed they could significantly increase the illumination on objective plane compared with 2D trough concentrators. A 3D concentrator prototype with a nominal 35�� half acceptance angle was made. Its performance was tested under an indoor solar simulator and by on-site experiment. Under solar simulator, a low cost poly-silicon solar cell coupled with a 3D concentrator achieved a 2.25 times of maximum output power compared with a similar bare solar cell. In the on-site experiment, poly-silicon solar cell with a 3D compound parabolic based reflective concentrator gained an average of 1.4 times maximum output power when the incidence sunlight within the critical angle. ? High-efficiency Köhler Photovoltaic Concentrators with External Light Confinement

Abstract:Metal grid lines are a vital element in multijunction solar cells in order to take out from the cell the generated photocurrent. Nevertheless all this implies certain shadowing factor and thus certain reflectivity on cells surface that lowers its light absorption. This reflectivity produces a loss in electrical efficiency and thus a loss in global energy production for CPV systems. We present here an optical design for recovering this portion of reflected light, and thus leading to a system efficiency increase. This new design is based on an external confinement cavity, an optical element able to redirect the light reflected by the cell towards its surface again. It has been possible thanks to the recent invention of the advanced Kohler concentrators by LPI, likely to integrate one of these cavities easily. We have proven the excellent performance of these cavities integrated in this kind of CPV modules offering outstanding results: 33.2% module electrical efficiency @Tcell=25 degrees C and relative efficiency and I-sc gains of over 6%.

Abstract:The compound parabolic concentrator (CPC) is a core technology in the field of solar concentration. Nevertheless, it only has one degree of freedom in the choice of its half-acceptance angle. In this study, extending the idea of the three-dimensional CPC, a design method for new kinds of concentrators having a CPC shape at each profile with various acceptance angles in all directions is proposed. The feature of this method is that the receiver can take any shape. Here, elliptical and rectangular receivers are assumed, and the shape and concentration performance of the concentrators with multiple CPC profiles and an elliptical receiver (MultiPro-ECPCs) and the concentrators with multiple CPC profiles and a rectangular receiver (MultiPro-RCPCs) are derived. The new designs are compared to the conventional CPC and a mirrorless flat receiver through ray-tracing simulations in terms of energy distribution on the receiver, optical efficiency, and optical concentration ratio based on axial and solar angles. The results show that in terms of optical efficiency, the MultiPro-RCPCs cover a wider range of incident angles after the 3DCPC. In terms of the optical concentration ratio, the MultiPro-ECPC with a longitudinal half-acceptance angle of 15° has the highest peak value of 19.5, followed by the MultiPro-RCPC. This study enlightens that with the concentration system settings adapted to the acceptance range of the proposed concentrators, a higher concentration can be achieved with the MultiPro-ECPC and MultiPro-RCPC compared to the conventional CPC.

Reliable Concentrated Photovoltaic System with Compound Concentrator

Abstract:Concentrated photovoltaic systems (CPVSs) draw more and more attention because of high photovoltaic conversion efficiency, low consumption of solar cell, and low cost of power generation. However, the fallibility of the tracker in such systems has hindered their practical application for more than twenty years. The tracker is indispensable for a CPVS since only normal-incident sunlight can be focused on the solar cell chips, even a slight deviation of incident light will result in a significant loss of solar radiation, and hence a distinct decrease in electricity output. Generally, the more accurate the tracker is, the more reliable the system is. However, it is not exactly the case for a CPVS reliability, because the more accurate the tracker is, the better environment it demands. A CPVS is usually has to subjected to harsh environmental conditions, such as strong wind, heavy rain or snow, and huge changes of temperature, which leads to the invalidation of the system's high-accuracy tracker. Hence, the reliability of a CPVS cannot be improved only by enhancing the tracker's accuracy. In this paper, a novel compound concentrator, combination of Fresnel lens and photo-funnel, has been adopted in a prototype CPVS. Test results show that the compound concentrator can relax the angle tolerance from one tenth to five degrees of arc at 400 suns, which can help a CPVS endure serious environment and remain its reliability over long period. The CPVS with compound concentrator is attractive for commercial application.

Abstract:Performance of a concentrating photovoltaic/thermal system directly depends on the solar irradiation gathered by concentrators. Few studies tackled the systemic and general optimizations of optical efficiency and uniformity of energy distribution for two-dimensional compound parabolic concentrators (CPCs). In this paper, a polynomial CPC is proposed. To evaluate the optical efficiency and uniformity of the concentrated irradiation, an interpolation method is also proposed. Using genetic algorithm, the optimized polynomial CPCs with different polynomial orders are determined. With fourth order, the concentrating efficiency reaches the theoretic limit, and the concentrated irradiation is relatively uniform. Accordingly, the optimized polynomial CPCs for concentration ratios not larger than 10 are determined. Using a double-pass spectral beam splitting photovoltaic/thermal system model, the electrical and thermal performance using the determined optimized polynomial CPCs is calculated. For concentration ratios not larger than 10, the optimized polynomial CPC is able to provide high concentrating efficiencies with good uniformity. Moreover, the maximum temperature of the photovoltaic cell is smaller than 325 K. And then, the optimized polynomial CPCs for multiple incident angles are presented, along with the system performance. For multiple incident angles, the optimized polynomial CPC also shows good performance, but the size increases.

Abstract:A high-concentration photovoltaic system was designed using non-imaging optics. To improve the irradiance uniformity surface of on solar cell, a homogenizer was introduced, and Total Internal Reflection Refraction (TIR-R) concentrator with concentration ratio of 1256× and acceptance angle of 1.53° was designed, with the highest irradiance intensity is less than twice the average on the cell surface. Simulations also reveal that the divergence angle of the sun can improve the irradiance uniformity, while the dispersion of the concentrator material mainly makes the acceptance angle decrease.
A Compact Flyeye Concentrator with High Uniformity Irradiance on the Solar Cell

Abstract:Based on the principle of Geometrical Optics (GO), a Flyeye concentrator with uniformity irradiance distribution on the solar cell in Concentrator Photovoltaic (CPV) system is presented. This Flyeye concentrator is composed of four surfaces, that is, refractive surface, mirror surface, freeform surface, and transmission surface. The discrete points of concentrator contour are solved according to edge-ray principle, ray reversibility principle and Fermat’s principle. Finally, the solid model is constructed by using 3D software. The sun light is used to simulate the incident light by ray tracing software. Results show that the proposed Flyeye concentrator is designed well by this method with a uniformity of more than 98%, Concentration Ratio (CR) of more than 31× and average thickness of 9.9 mm.

Abstract:A practical optimization design is proposed, in which the solar direct light spectrum and multijunction cell response range are taken into account in combination, particularly for the Fresnel concentrators with a high concentration and a small aspect ratio. In addition, the change of refractive index due to temperature variation in outdoor operation conditions is also considered in the design stage. The calculation results show that this novel Fresnel lens achieves an enhancement of energy efficiency of about 10% compared with conventional Fresnel lens for a given solar spectrum, solar cell response, and corrected sunshine hours of different ambient temperature intervals.

Abstract:Non-imaging solar concentrator has many applications in solar thermal conversion and photovoltaic power generation because of its performance characteristics such as no tracking, stable light concentration, compact structure and easy integration. For this purpose, this paper conducts a study on the non-imaging concentrator based on the optimized design of the concentrating surface structure for photovoltaic electric generation, thermal energy recovery and direct-drive hydrogen production. Firstly, a theoretical construction of a mathematical model of the solar Concentrating Photovoltaic and Photo-thermal (CPV/T) system with electricity-thermal-hydrogen co-generation and a numerical solution path for the Current and Voltage (I-V) characteristic curve is presented. Moreover, an integrated CPV/T system experimental setup is constructed outdoors and its power generation, heat collection and hydrogen production processes are measured. Finally, it is found that the average electrical efficiencies of the CPV/T system are 13.03 % and 13.29 % for theory and experiment, respectively. The theoretical and experimental average thermal efficiencies are 27.47 % and 27.24 %, respectively. The theoretical and experimental average hydrogen production rates based on Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) control are 19.47 ml/min and 16.11 ml/min, respectively. The research results also show that the integrally constructed CPV/T system not only achieves effective conversion of solar energy into electrical and thermal energy, but also can directly convert electrical energy into clean, stable and easily stored hydrogen energy, which has potential application prospects.

Abstract:In this paper we present and experimentally validate a low-cost design of a spectral splitting concentrator for the efficient conversion of solar energy. The optical device consists of a dispersive prismatic lens made of polycarbonate designed to simultaneously concentrate the solar light and split it into its spectral components. With respect to our previous implementation, this device concentrates the light along two axes and generates a light pattern compatible with the dimensions of a set of concentrating photovoltaic cells while providing a higher concentration ratio. The mathematical framework and the constructive approach used for the design are presented and the device performance is simulated using a ray-tracing software. We obtain spectral separation in the visible range within a 3x1 cm2 area and a maximum concentration of 210x for a single wavelength. The device is fabricated by injection molding and its performance is experimentally investigated. We measure an optical transmissivity above 90% in the range 400-800 nm and we observe a spectral distribution in good accordance with simulations. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of the device for cost effective high efficiency concentrated photovoltaic systems.

Abstract:Introduction: In the field of solar energy utilization, the construction of low cost and easy to process large concentrated photothermal system is a scientific problem to be solved. A linear Fresnel reflection solar concentrator is proposed in this paper. Methods: The position, tilt angle and width of the glass mirrors placed in the same plane are different to ensure that all the reflected light falls on the flat focal plane or cylindrical focal surface. According to the focusing principle of the concentrator, two experimental system platforms ware built. When a flat focal plane is used to receive radiation from the sun, the intensity distribution of focal plane light spot is uniform in theory. Results: The CCD measurement method is used to analyze the concentrated light spot under experimental conditions, and it is proved that the energy flux density on the focal plane is uniform. Placing monocrystalline silicon cells on the focal plane, the experimental results of p - v power generation voltammetry show that the power generation efficiency of monocrystalline silicon cell does not decrease due to the uniform solar energy density, which can reach 17.1%. The photothermal experiment is carried out by using one-dimensional tracking mode of sunlight. The concentrator reflects the sun's rays onto the vacuum collector tubes, heating the heat conduction oil flow in. The thermocouple measures the temperature of the heat conduction oil at the inlet and outlet of the vacuum collector tubes. The experimental photothermal conversion efficiency of this concentrator was analyzed and calculated through multiple groups of photothermal experiments, and compared with the theoretical concentrator efficiency. With two collector tubes in series, the theoretical photothermal conversion efficiency reaches 0.8 and the experimental photothermal conversion efficiency reaches about 0.74. Discussion: Because of its good concentrating performance and low cost, this type concentrator can be widely used in photothermal and photovoltaic applications.

Abstract:A novel asymmetric lens-walled compound parabolic concentrator (ALCPC) for integration with the building south wall was proposed and manufactured. Besides of the asymmetric lens-walled structure, the special rotation angle at the bottom is also introduced to optimize the performance. The electrical and optical performance of the ALCPC-PV was detailed analyzed through the experiment and ray tracing simulation. The indoor experiment was conducted by a solar simulator (Oriel So13A Model 90943A) from Newport Corporation at the dark environment with the temperature of 25 degrees C. Form the experiment results, the ALCPC increases the maximum power by a ratio of 1.74x compared to the bare cell. The decrease of the geometric concentration ratio is mainly due to manufacturing errors, mismatch losses, series resistance losses, etc. The optical performance of the ALCPC was also investigated by the software Lighttools, and the optical efficiency and the distribution percentage of the energy collected through the total internal reflection and the specular reflection at different incidence angles are identified at various incidence angles. A good agreement is observed between the experiment results and the ray tracing results. The optical efficiency at the incidence angles of 0-60 degrees is all within 90% of its peak value which means that the proposed ALCPC can achieve 60 degrees acceptance angle with high optical efficiency that it shows a good potential as a static concentrator for the building south wall integration.

Abstract:A Flyeye concentrator with improved irradiance distribution on the solar cell in a concentrator photovoltaic system is proposed. This Flyeye concentrator is composed of four surfaces: a refractive surface, mirror surface, freeform surface, and transmissive surface. Based on the principles of geometrical optics, the contours of the proposed Flyeye concentrator are calculated according to Fermat's principle, the edge-ray principle, and the ray reversibility principle without solving partial differential equations or using an optimization algorithm, therefore a slope angle control method is used to construct the freeform surface. The solid model is established by applying a symmetry of revolution around the optical axis. Additionally, the optical performance for the Flyeye concentrator is simulated and analyzed by Monte-Carlo method. Results show that the Flyeye concentrator optical efficiency of >96.2% is achievable with 1333x concentration ratio and +/- 1.3 deg acceptance angle, and 1.3 low aspect ratio (average thickness to entry aperture diameter ratio). Moreover, comparing the Flyeye concentrator specification to that of the Kohler concentrator and the traditional Fresnel-type concentrator, results indicate that this concentrator has the advantages of improved uniformity, reduced thickness, and increased tolerance to the incident sunlight. Design and demonstration of ultra-compact microcell concentrating photovoltaics for space

Abstract:Optical concentration can improve the efficiency and reduce the cost of photovoltaic power but has traditionally been too bulky, massive, and unreliable for use in space. Here, we explore a new ultra-compact and low-mass microcell concentrating photovoltaic (µCPV) paradigm for space based on the monolithic integration of transfer-printed microscale solar cells and molded microconcentrator optics. We derive basic bounds on the compactness as a function of geometric concentration ratio and angular acceptance, and show that a simple reflective parabolic concentrator provides the best combination of specific power, angular acceptance, and overall fabrication simplicity. This architecture is simulated in detail and validated experimentally with a µCPV prototype that is less than 1.7 mm thick and operates with six, 650 µm square triple-junction microcells at a geometric concentration ratio of 18.4×. In outdoor testing, the system achieves a terrestrial power conversion efficiency of 25.8 ± 0.2% over a ±9.5° angular range, resulting in a specific power of approximately 111 W/kg. These results lay the groundwork for future space µCPV systems and establish a realistic path to exceed 350 W/kg specific power at >33% power conversion efficiency by scaling down to even smaller microcells.
Optimization Design of Hybrid Fresnel-Based Concentrator for Generating Uniformity Irradiance with the Broad Solar Spectrum

Abstract:This paper presents a novel hybrid Fresnel-based concentrator with improved uniformity irradiance distribution on the solar cell without using secondary optical element (SOE) in the concentrator photovoltaic (CPV) system to overcome the Fresnel loss and to increase the solar cell conversion efficiency. The designed hybrid Fresnel-based concentrator is composed of two parts, the inner part and the outer part. The inner part is the conventional Fresnel lens, while the outer part is double total internal reflection (DTIR) lens. According to the simple geometrical relation, the profile of the proposed hybrid Fresnel-based concentrator is calculated as an initial design profile. To obtain good irradiance uniformity on the solar cell, optimal prism displacements are optimized by using a simplex algorithm for collimated incident sunlight based on different prism focus on different position principles. In addition, a Monte-Carlo ray-tracing simulation approach is utilized to verify the optical performance for the hybrid Fresnel-based concentrator. Results indicate that the hybrid Fresnel-based concentrator designed using this method can achieve spatial non-uniformity less than 16.2%, f-number less than 0.59 (focal length to entry aperture diameter ratio), geometrical concentrator ratio 1759.8×, and acceptance angle ±0.23°. Compared to the conventional Fresnel-based lens and the traditional hybrid Fresnel-based lens, the optimized concentrator yields a significant improvement in irradiance uniformity on the solar cell with a wide solar spectrum range. It also has good tolerance to the incident sunlight.
Solar Spectrum Splitting Parallel Junction High Efficiency Concentrating Photovoltaics

Abstract:A compact, single element concentrator comprising a near linear array of prisms has been designed to simultaneously split and concentrate the solar spectrum. Laterally aligned solar cells with different bandgaps are devised to be fabricated on a common Si substrate, with each cell absorbing a different spectral band optimized for highest overall power conversion efficiency. Epitaxial Ge on Si is used as a low cost virtual substrate for III-V materials growth. Assuming no optical loss for the prism concentrator, no shadowing and perfect carrier collection for the solar cells, simulations show that 39% efficiency can be achieved for a parallel four-junction (4PJ) InGaP-GaAs-Si-Ge cell under 200X concentration, and higher efficiency is possible with more junctions.

Abstract:Significance Concentrator photovoltaic (CPV) systems, wherein light focuses onto multijunction solar cells, offer the highest efficiencies in converting sunlight to electricity. The performance is intrinsically limited, however, by an inability to capture diffuse illumination, due to narrow acceptance angles of the concentrator optics. Here we demonstrate concepts where flat-plate solar cells mount onto the backplanes of the most sophisticated CPV modules to yield an additive contribution to the overall output. Outdoor testing results with two different hybrid module designs demonstrate absolute gains in average daily efficiencies of between 1.02% and 8.45% depending on weather conditions. The findings suggest pathways to significant improvements in the efficiencies, with economics that could potentially expand their deployment to a wide range of geographic locations.

Abstract:The paper presents a promising solution for photovoltaic modules that provides overcoming the main conceptual limitation for the concentrator concept in photovoltaics—the impossibility to convert diffused (scattered) solar radiation coming to the panel of sunlight concentrators. The design of a hybrid concentrator-planar photovoltaic module based on heterostructure solar cells: A3B5 triple-junction and Si-HJT is presented. The results of initial outdoor studies of the module output characteristics are discussed and estimates of its energy efficiency are given.

Abstract:Recent improvement in the performance of silicon solar cells has produced outstanding energy conversion efficiencies of 27.5 percent by the use of high-resistivity rear-contacted cells.
