Abstract:Semicrystalline polymers are categorized as either mobile or fixed crystals, depending on chain mobility in the crystalline region. In this work, we investigate molecular dynamics and phase structure in the cocrystal consisting of fixed and mobile polymer crystals by solid-state (ss) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. It is demonstrated that (i) the mobile component begins large amplitude motions associated with crystal-crystal transition, while fixed ones keep their rigidity in the cocrystal, and (ii) asymmetric molecular dynamics leads to nanosegregations into mobile- and fixed-rich domains in the cocrystal below the melting temperature (Tm). The observed phase separation induced by asymmetric molecular dynamics is similar to the phase separation of the miscible amorphous polymer blend; however, it is limited to two dimensions due to the parallel packing of the stems inside the cocrystal, as well as chain connectivity at the crystalline-amorphous boundary.
Interplay Between Two Phase Transitions: Crystallization and Liquid-Liquid Phase Separation in a Polyolefin Blend

Abstract:The interplay between liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) and crystallization at several compositions in statistical copolymer blends of poly(ethyleneco-hexene) and poly(ethylene-cobutene) has been examined by optical microscopy (OM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The phase contrast optical microscopy shows interconnected bicontinuous structures for deeply quenched LLPS, characteristic of spinodal decomposition. After a second quench to a temperature below the melting point, an overwhelming change in crystallization kinetics has been clearly observed, which is caused by the increase of the nucleation rate assisted by concentration fluctuations due to the spontaneous spinodal LLPS. We propose a new mechanism of “fluctuation assisted nucleation” in the crystallization process for such interactive process in a blend system. The experimental results from OM, AFM, and DSC measurements at various conditions are all consistent with the fluctuation assisted nucleation model.
Isothermal Crystallization Kinetics and Melting Behavior of Poly(oxyethylene)-b-poly(oxybutylene)/Poly(oxybutylene) Blends

Abstract:Poly(oxyethylene-b-oxybutylene) block copolymers of various chain lengths (EmBn) were blended with poly(oxybutylene) homopolymer (B-h), materials having different segregation strengths and morphologies (lamellae, cylinder, and sphere) were obtained. The isothermal crystallization kinetics and melting behavior of the blends were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), respectively. Two types of crystallization are identified: confined crystallization occurring at lower temperature with Avrami exponent close to 1.0, having a strong dependence of crystallization halftime on crystallization temperature and a smooth change of q* in crystallization; breakout crystallization occurring at higher temperature with an Avrami exponent much bigger than 1.0 and a step change in q*. The relative segregation strength chi(c)/chi(ODT) has an important influence on the crystallization mechanism, and confined crystallization is observed at chi(c)/chi(ODT) > 3 whereas breakout crystallization occurs with chi(c)/chi(ODT) < 3. For the blends with chi(c)/chi(ODT) around 3 the mode of crystallization is dependent on the crystallization temperature (confined at lower temperature but breakout at higher temperature). In confined crystallization the interfacial energy a. can be determined from crystallization rate. It is found that the values of sigma(e) for the EmBn, block copolymers are slightly larger than that of PEO homopolymer. Confined crystallization can be further divided into three types based on melting behavior: partially confined crystallization for the blends with intermediate relative segregation strength having a cylinder structure in the melt, in which only part of the morphology in the melt is retained after crystallization and the other part is transformed into lamellae; "weakly",. confined crystallization with no step change of q* upon nonisothermal crystallization but remarkable change of q* during heating for the blends with strong relative segregation strength and a cylinder structure in the melt; and "strongly" confined crystallization showing little change of q* with temperature upon both crystallization and melting for the blends with sphere structure and strong relative segregation strength. In the range of molecular weight studied, only breakout crystallization was observed in lamellar melt morphologies.

Acceleration or Retardation to Crystallization if Liquid–liquid Phase Separation Occurs: Studies on a Polyolefin Blend by SAXS/WAXD, DSC and TEM

Abstract:Blends of statistical copolymers containing ethylene/hexene (PEH) and ethylene/butene (PEB) exhibited the behavior of upper critical solution temperature (UCST). The interplay between the early and intermediate stage liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS) and crystallization of the PEH/PEB 50/50 blend was studied by time-resolved simultaneous small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) techniques. Samples were treated by two different quench procedures: in single quench, the sample was directly quenched from 160°C to isothermal crystallization temperature of 114°C; while in double quench, the sample was firstly quenched to 130°C for 20min annealing, where LLPS occurred, and then to 114°C. It was found that in the early stage of crystallization, the integrated values of Iq2 and crystallinity, Xc, in the double quench procedure were consistently higher than those in the single quench procedure, which could be attributed to accelerated nucleation induced by enhanced concentration fluctuations and interfacial tension. In the late stage of crystallization, some morphological parameters were found to crossover and then reverse, which could be explained by retardation of lamellar growth due to phase separation formed during the double quench procedure. This phenomenon was also confirmed by DSC measurements in blends of different compositions at varying isothermal crystallization temperatures. The crystal lamellar thickness determined by SAXS showed a good agreement with TEM observation. Results indicated that the early stage LLPS in the PEH/PEB blend prior to crystallization indeed dictated the resulting lamellar structures, including the average size of lamellar stack and the stack distribution. There seemed to be little variation of lamellar thickness and long period between the two quenching procedures (i.e., single quench versus double quench).

Abstract:Crystallization of a polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide)-b-polystyrene (S–EO–S) triblock copolymer, S40EO136S40, with lamellar morphology in the melt and low glass transition temperature (Tg=47 °C) of the S block was studied. The triblock copolymer was cooled from ordered melt and isothermal crystallization was conducted at crystallization temperatures (Tc) near the Tg of the S block. It is found that crystallization behavior of S40EO136S40 strongly depends on Tc. When Tc is far below Tg, an Avrami exponent n=0.5 is observed, which is attributed to diffusion-controlled confined crystallization. As Tc slightly increases, the Avrami exponent is 1.0, indicating that crystallization is confined and crystallization rate is determined by the rate of homogeneous nucleation. When Tc is just below the Tg of the S block, crystallization tends to become breakout and accordingly Avrami exponent changes from 1.0 to 3.2. Crystallinity and melting temperature of the EO block in breakout crystallization are slightly higher than those in confined crystallization. Time-resolved small and wide angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) were used to monitor isothermal crystallization of S40EO136S40. It shows that the long period is constant in confined crystallization, but it gradually increases during breakout crystallization. WAXS result reveals that confined or breakout crystallization has no effect on the crystal structure of the EO block.
Morphological Confinement on Crystallization in Blends of Poly(oxyethylene-<i>b</i><i>lock</i>-oxybutylene) and Poly(oxybutylene)

Abstract:Three poly(oxyethylene-block-oxybutylene) diblock copolymers, E76B38, E114B56, and E155B76, were blended with poly(oxybutylene) homopolymer, B-14 and B-28, such that lamellae (lam), gyroid (gyr), hexagonally packed cylinders (hex), and body-centered-cubic (bcc) spheres were obtained in the melt. The nonisothermal crystallization on cooling of the blends was investigated with synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering (SAYS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In general, two classes of behavior are observed. In confined crystallization the morphology of the melt is retained, and crystals have limited dimensions. In breakout crystallization the melt morphology is destroyed, and a new lamellar morphology is formed. The morphological state (confinement in or breakout of melt morphology) during crystallization was evaluated by the change of the position of the first-order peak (q*) in SAXS and the crystallization temperature (T-c). Breakout of morphology was observed in all E76B38/B-14 blends and E114B56/ B-28 and E155B76/B-28 blends with lam morphology, while confined crystallization occurred in E155B76/B-28 blends with hex and bcc morphologies and E114B36/B-28 blends with bee morphology. Confined crystallization was also observed in low E content E114B56/B-28 blends with hex morphology. These findings lead to two conclusions: W the tendency of confined crystallization varies with morphology and decreases in the order bcc > hex > lam, and (ii) confinement on crystallization tends to increase with the extent of segregation between the two blocks. The DSC results show that the crystallization temperature of the blends varies with morphology and chain length of the block copolymers. A much lower T-c was observed for the blends exhibiting confined crystallization behavior, and this phenomenon is explained by a homogeneous nucleation mechanism. The morphology over a larger scale was also examined by polarized light microscopy, and spherulite formation was only observed in the blends where the morphology was easily broken out during crystallization.

Abstract:A series of liquid crystalline/crystalline block copolymers (BCPs) containing poly(methacrylate) block with liquid crystalline (LC) azobenzene moieties in the side chains (PMMAzo) and crystalline block poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) were prepared. The interplay of microphase separation, crystallization and LC ordering in these BCPs was investigated. It is revealed that microphase separation between two blocks is favorable to the LC ordering, which is attributed to the enhanced local concentration of LC moieties in PMMAzo microdomains. For a similar reason, crystallization of PLLA can intensify microphase separation thus facilitate LC ordering of PMMAzo. PLLA crystallization may also stabilize the LC structure, leading to phase transition temperatures of the BCPs higher than that of PMMAzo homopolymer. On the other hand, the LC ordering can conversely affect crystallization of PLLA. The crystallizability of PLLA is weakened by the chemically linked PMMAzo block. The special PLLA ε-crystals, which are usually formed in the presence of organic solvents, are unexpectedly observed under suitable conditions.
Liquid–liquid Phase Separation in a Polyethylene Blend Monitored by Crystallization Kinetics and Crystal-Decorated Phase Morphologies

Abstract:A series of polyethylene (PE) blends consisting of a linear high density polyethylene (HDPE) and a linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) with an octane-chain branch density of 120/1000 carbon was prepared at different concentrations. The two components of this set of blends possessed isorefractive indices, thus, making it difficult to detect their liquid–liquid phase separation via scattering techniques. Above the experimentally observed melting temperature of HDPE, Tm = 133 °C, this series of blends can be considered to be in the liquid state. The LLDPE crystallization temperature was below 50 °C; therefore, above 80 °C and below the melting temperature of HDPE, a series of crystalline–amorphous PE blends could be created. A specifically designed two-step isothermal experimental procedure was utilized to monitor the liquid–liquid phase separation of this set of blends. The first step was to quench the system from temperatures of known miscibility and isothermally anneal them at a temperature higher than the equilibrium melting temperature of the HDPE for the purpose of allowing the phase morphology to develop from liquid–liquid phase separation. The second step was to quench the system to a temperature at which the HDPE could rapidly crystallize. The time for developing 50% of the total crystallinity (t1/2) was used to monitor the crystallization kinetics. Because phase separation results in HDPE-rich domains where the crystallization rates are increased, this technique provided an experimental measure to identify the binodal curve of the liquid–liquid phase separation for the system indicated by faster t1/2. The annealing temperature in the first step that exhibits an onset of the decrease in t1/2 is the temperature of the binodal point for that blend composition. In addition, the HDPE-rich domains crystallized to form spherulites which decorate the phase-separated morphology. Therefore, the crystal dispersion indicates whether the phase separation followed a nucleation-and-growth process or a spinodal decomposition process. These crystal-decorated morphologies enabled the spinodal curve to be experimentally determined for the first time in this set of blends.

Abstract:The crystallization kinetics and mechanisms of phase transitions for sequential block copoly-mers synthesized through polycondensation of the mesogenic group 2-methyl-p-phenylene di(4-chloroformyl) benzoate, 1, 10-decanediol (B) and poly (oxytetramethylene) glycol (C) have been investigated by using DSC, PLM, and WAXD. As a feed ratio of B/C( 10/90, 20/80, 40/60, 50/ 50, wt%), the values of Avrami exponent are n≈2 at all the feed ratios. The crystallization from isotropic melt experienced the stage of mesophase period. The crystallization either from isorro-pic melt or from mesophase has the same mechanism including nucleation through aggregation of orientational segments and the two dimensional crystal growth. The flexible block of poly(oxyre-tramethylene)glycol has a significant influence on the structure formation. It is worth to indicate that ca. the ratio 20/80 there a lower Bk value and a larger entropy change △St during mesophase to isotropic melt transition.

Abstract:The liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) is often coupled with other ordering processes such as crystallization. In a polyolefin blend system, overwhelming changes in crystallization kinetics due to concentration fluctuation caused by spontaneous spinodal LLPS have been observed. Consequently, we are proposing a new mechanism of "fluctuation-assisted crystallization". In this process, the usual nucleation barrier could be overcome (or at least partially) by the spontaneous fluctuation growth of LLPS in the spinodal region.Time-resolved polarized optical micrographs for poly-(ethylene-co-hexene) (PEH)/poly(ethylene-co-butene) (PEB) = 40.60 isothermally crystallized at 117 degrees C for 2 min after LLPS at 135 degrees C as a function of LLPS time at 135 degrees C.
Polymorphic Phase Formation Of Liquid Crystals Distributed In Semicrystalline Polymers: An Indicator Of Interlamellar And Interspherulitic Segregation

Abstract:Amorphous and melted components can segregate into the interlamellar or interspherulitic regions of polymer crystals in their blends/mixtures; this phase behavior strongly influences the physical properties and functions of materials. However, it is experimentally difficult to evaluate the spatial distributions of the other components in polymer crystals. Herein, we use a small-molecule liquid crystal (LC) as a probe and find that it forms different solid phases when mixed with the semicrystalline polymer poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA). The LC can form the metastable phase at the lower PLLA crystallization temperature but the stable phase at the higher PLLA crystallization temperature in the PLLA/LC mixture. The formation of LC metastable and stable phases is attributed to the segregation of the LC material in the interlamellar and interspherulitic regions of polymer crystals, respectively. This study provides a potential way to evaluate the spatial segregation in the crystallization-induced microphase separation of polymer blends/mixtures.

Abstract:The kinetic interplay between crystallization and liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS) in random copolymer blends of poly(ethylene-ran-hexene) (PEH) and poly(ethylene-ran-butene) (PEB) has been studied using optical microscopy. Morphologies of blends gone through three different thermal histories are compared: (1) single-quench (SQ), a homogeneous melt quickly cooled to isothermal crystallization temperatures (Tcry), (2) double-quench (DQ), a homogeneous melt quickly cooled to an intermediate temperature (Tlps) between binodal and equilibrium melting temperature (Tm0) and stored for a period of time and then cooled to Tcry, and (3) cyclic-quench (CQ), a homogeneous melt quickly cooled to Tlps and stored for a period of time, then gone through four cycles of crystallization and remelting. Comparing DQ morphologies to SQ ones, both crystal growth rate and nucleation density in the former are affected by prior LLPS. A scaling argument has been provided to partially account for the observed phenomena. In CQ, characteristic lengths of secondary features induced by crystallization depend strongly on the overall PEH composition, whereas are insensitive to temperature cycling. The contrast of large domains becomes more prominent upon cyclic crystallization and remelting. On the other hand, primary LLPS domains coarsen with CQ while loosing the contrast.

Abstract:The competition between crystallization and phase separation has always been a major concern for semi-crystalline block copolymers. In this work, in order to examine the mesophase evolution during crystallization in an olefin block copolymer (OBC), a "two-step isothermal crystallization" strategy was designed elaborately: the OBC samples were first isothermally crystallized at different temperatures (T-c) to create diverse crystallization histories; after melting, the second crystallization process was carried out to detect the degree of mesophase separation change during the first crystallization. It was quite interesting that the first crystallization at a lower T-c displayed little influence on the second crystallization process, while the first crystallization at a higher T-c could obviously accelerate the subsequent crystallization. In combination with the observation of the crystalline morphologies and phase morphologies in the melt, we speculated that hard blocks mainly crystallized separately during relatively rapid crystallization with a large quantity of nuclei; while crystallization-induced aggregation of hard blocks occurred during slow crystallization with a limited number of nuclei, changing the distribution of the hard blocks and accelerating the subsequent crystallization as a consequence. This work contributes to the understanding of the phase evolution during crystallization of OBC and such multi-block copolymers under different circumstances.
Regulation of Crystallization Kinetics, Morphology, and Mechanical Properties of Olefinic Blocky Copolymers

Abstract:Two olefinic blocky copolymers (OBCs) were quenched from different mixing states in the melt, and crystallization kinetics and morphology at various crystallization temperatures (T(c)s) and corresponding mechanical properties were studied. It is observed that, at lower T(c)s, premesophase separation in the melt accelerates crystallization of OBC-A with a weak segregation strength and a larger fraction of the crystalline hard blocks due to enrichment of the hard blocks in the hard-block-rich domains. By contrast, premesophase separation retards crystallization of OBC-B with a stronger segregation strength and lower fraction of the hard blocks because of the prevailing confinement effect at lower T(c)s. Moreover, since the hard blocks dissolved in the soft-block-rich domains can crystallize at lower T(c)s, which can bridge the crystals formed in different hard-block-rich domains, the crystal growth is not restricted. At higher T(c)s, OBC-A crystallizes more slowly from the premesophase-separated melt than that from the homogeneous melt, which is attributed to the weaker crystallizability of the hard blocks dissolved in the soft-block-rich domains and thus the restricted crystal growth. Nevertheless, mesophase separation always takes place prior to crystallization at higher T(c)s for OBC-B because of the faster rate of mesophase separation. Therefore, the mixing state in the melt has little effect on crystallization and morphology of OBC-B at higher T(c)s. It is found that the mechanical properties of OBCs can be regulated in a wide range by alteration of crystallization conditions. Better mechanical properties can be achieved when OBCs crystallize from the homogeneous melt and at a lower T-c.

Abstract:Polymer crystallization is a multi-stage process and generally takes place through the metastable intermediate structure or mesophase. However, mesopahse is difficult to be experimentally detected during crystallization and its formation mechanism is not well understood. Herein, we find that the formation of mesopahse is facilitated in the crystallization of stereocomplexable block polymers. We use the poly(L-lactic acid)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA-PEG-PLLA) and poly(D-lactic acid)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(D-lactic acid) (PDLA-PEG-PDLA) as the stereocomplexable pair and investigate the synergetic effects of copolymer composition and PLLA/PDLA stereocomplexation on the mesophase formation in the PLLA-PEG-PLLA/PDLA-PEG-PDLA 1/1 blends. Intriguingly, the stereocomplexable blend having the high PEG fraction forms the unique homocrystalline mesophase at the low crystallization temperature (T-c, 70-120 degrees C) but the usual alpha-form homocrystals (HCs) at high T-c (120-160 degrees C), except for the stereocomplexes (SCs). However, the crystalline structure of PLLA-PEG-PLLA/PDLA-PEG-PDLA blend with low PEG fraction is similar as the PLLA/PDLA blend; it crystallizes in the mixture of alpha(alpha')-HCs + SCs at T-c = 70-160 degrees C. The homocrystalline mesophase formed in stereocomplexable blend is metastable and reorganizes into the more thermally-stable alpha-HCs and SCs during heating. We propose that the mesophase formation in enantiomeric blend is resulted by the constrained effects induced by the stereocomplexation and microphase separation of block copolymers.
Melting–Recrystallization of Block Copolymer Crystals in Confined Environments

Abstract:Recently crystallization of block copolymers in confined domains has been extensively studied. Crystallization in confined environments is usually initiated by homogeneous nucleation at large supercooling. Thus the crystals formed are highly imperfect and have lower crystallinity, compared with the crystals formed under normal crystallization conditions. As a result, the possibility of reorganization of these less perfect crystals into more ordered crystals is of great interest. Such reorganization can be achieved by melting–recrystallization or solid-solid transformation. Rottele et al. investigated melting behavior of strongly segregated poly(butadiene)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PB-b-PEO) block copolymers with spherical PEO domains. They observed that PEO crystals with different degrees of perfection could be produced when crystallization of PEO takes place in the confined spherical domains and the less perfect crystals transform into more perfect ones by reorganization in the solid state, but reorganization by melting–recrystallization is prohibited. Chen also observed coalescence of different crystalline domains after annealing the confined domains of PB-b-PEO block copolymer. However, reorganization of confined crystals via melting–recrystallization has not been reported so far. Confined crystallization behavior of semicrystalline block copolymers is strongly influenced by segregation strength of the two blocks and the morphology in the ordered melt. The effects of these two factors on reorganization of the block copolymer crystals have not been reported. In the present work, an oxyethylene/oxybutylene, generally believed to be a weakly segregated block copolymer, was blended with amorphous poly(oxybutylene) homopolymer. Two blends with B 1⁄4 0:76 (cylinder morphology) and B 1⁄4 0:83 (sphere morphology), respectively, were prepared and both exhibited confined crystallization behavior. Reorganization of the PEO crystals in confined domains of different shapes was studied with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and synchrotron small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) at different heating rates.

Abstract:The phase behavior and thermally induced phase separation in blends of poly{styrene-co-[p-(2,2,2-trifluoro-1-hydroxy-1-trifluoromethyl)ethyl-α-methylstyrene]} (PS(OH)) and a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) were studied by optical microscopy (OM), infrared spectroscopy (IR) and time-resolved light scattering (TRLS). PS(OH) contains strong proton-donating groups —C(CF3)2OH, and the LCP is poly[p-(tert-butyl)phenylene fumarate] (PBPF), which is soluble in common solvents. For blends of PS(OH)/PBPF, the miscible region was found only at high PBPF compositions and low temperature due to intermolecular hydrogen bonding between —C(CF3)2OH groups of PS(OH) and the phenolic OH end-groups of PBPF according to IR. The PS(OH)/PBPF blend undergoes phase separation via spinodal decomposition (SD) during isothermal annealing in the two-phase regime of phase diagram. The SD yielded unique Vv and Hv scattering patterns, which can be attributed to regular periodic phase-separated structures composed of an anisotropic phase and an isotropic phase. Preliminary studies on the SD process by TRLS showed that the phase separation spontaneously occurs at a certain time, that might be associated with the presence of the LCP.
Influence of Eu-doping on wettability of TiO2 thin films

Abstract:In this work nanocrystalline titanium dioxide thin films doped with Eu have been presented. Structural investigation results have shown that amount of Eu in TiO2 matrix has meaningful influence on properties of the thin films, particularly on TiO2 phase and grain sizes. Our measurements have shown that Eu increases photocatalytic activity of TiO2. Eu also has high influence on adsorption of OH- groups and H2O particles on the thin films surface. The results of wettability measurements have shown that 0.1 at. % of Eu-dopant in TiO{ia2} matrix allows to obtain hydrophilic anatase structure, which is stable up to 800 °C. The wettability of nanocrystalline TiO2:Eu (0.1 at. %) thin film also increase with the increase of temperature during additional annealing. The value of wetting angle of TiO2:Eu (0.1 % at.) thin film decrease at about 40 % by additional annealing up to 800 °C (from 85 down to 68 degrees). The increase of the wettability of the TiO2:Eu (0.1 at. %) thin film by additional annealing was also connected with decrease of quantity of OH- groups and H2O particles, which were adsorbed on the thin film surface.

Abstract:We have studied the effect of liquid–liquid phase separation on crystallization in near-critical blends of poly(ethylene-co-hexene)/poly(ethylene-co-octene) and poly(ethylene-co-hexene)/poly(ethylene-co-butene) using optical microscopy and simultaneous small and wide angle X-ray scattering. Two quenching schemes were used in this study: (1) single-quench, a homogeneous melt quickly cooled to the crystallization temperature, and (2) double-quench, a homogeneous melt quickly cooled to an intermediate temperature, which allows for occurring phase separation but not crystallization, then to the crystallization temperature. We could found more crystalline nuclei in case of single-quench than of double-quench. The long spacing of lamellar crystals is approximately 20Å larger in single-quench than in double-quench, due primarily to the inclusion of more non-crystallizable components in the amorphous layers of lamellar stacks in the former. The degree of crystallinity is about three times higher in single-quench.
