Abstract:Polymer blending is one of the most efficient methods for polymer modification.With the development of high performance computer,the modeling of the polymer blends is thriving in practical applications.The multi-scale computer simulation for polymer blends was reviewed as well as the principle and fundamental theories were introduced briefly.It shows how to model a polymer blend system from the molecular scale to the meso-scale,and the applications of multi-scale computer simulation on the research fields of the morphology,phase separation and compatibility of polymer blends were reviewed in details.Finally,the research trend was suggested.

Abstract:Based on the Monte Carlo (MC) Potts model, the grain growth of porous ceramic in Vapor-Liquid-Solid phase sintering process was firstly simulated by us with the improved MC method. A two-dimensional, hexagonal lattice is used to digitize the microstructure and the components and grain orientation are distributed randomly. The periodical boundary condition is applied. In our simulation, the grain growth and coarsening process driven by the reduction of interfacial free energy within a complex system involving Vapor, Liquid and Solid phase were investigated with 257 orientations and which is denoted by different color. "1" denotes the vapor phase, "0" denotes the liquid phase and other numbers from "2" to "256" denote different solid phase. Results show: the improved model is able to obtain the right distribution of liquid and vapor, and is able to simulate solution, precipitation, sublimation, coacervation, evaporation process; With different MCS, the simulated grain size distribution lines are similar, which is resonable.

Abstract:Abstract Polymer components are shaped mostly out of the molten state. As in the case of semi-crystalline polymers, crystallization can be suppressed by shock cooling, thermal process design allows to influence the solid bodies properties. A simulation approach that enables to predict these properties based on a forecast of crystallinity is presented in this paper. The main effects to consider and possibilities of modeling and simulation are discussed. A detailed description of how to create an experimental foundation using dynamic scanning calorimetry (DSC) and a rheometer is provided. Suppression of crystallization is modeled by a novel phenomenological approach, based on data over a large band of cooling rates. Special focus is put on parameter identification and extension of insufficient DSC data. The mechanical behavior is modeled using a weighted approach based on a nonlinear-thermoviscoelastic model for the molten state and a highly viscous Newtonian model for the solid state. Parameterization of both models is highlighted. An implementation in OpenFOAM is documented, emphasizing specific methods that were applied. Results of simulations for a simplified profile extrusion and injection molding case are presented. Basic relationships are forecasted correctly by the method, and important findings are presented for both processes.

Abstract:▪ Abstract Polymers offer a wide spectrum of possibilities for materials applications, in part because of the chemical complexity and variability of the constituent molecules, and in part because they can be blended together with other organic as well as inorganic components. The majority of applications of polymeric materials is based on their excellent mechanical properties, which arise from the long-chain nature of the constituents. Microscopically, this means that polymeric materials are able to respond to external forces in a broad frequency range, i.e., with a broad range of relaxation processes. Computer simulation methods are ideally suited to help to understand these processes and the structural properties that lead to them and to further our ability to predict materials properties and behavior. However, the broad range of timescales and underlying structure prohibits any one single simulation method from capturing all of these processes. This manuscript provides an overview of some of the more popular computational models and methods used today in the field of molecular and mesoscale simulation of polymeric materials, ranging from molecular models and methods that treat electronic degrees of freedom to mesoscopic field theoretic methods.

Abstract:Modeling and simulation of the morphology evolution of immiscible polymer blends during injection molding is crucial for predicting and tailoring the products’ performance. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art progress in the multiscale modeling and simulation of injection molding of polymer blends. Technological development of the injection molding simulation on a macroscale was surveyed in detail. The aspects of various models for morphology evolution on a mesoscale during injection molding were discussed. The current scale-bridging strategies between macroscopic mold-filling flow and mesoscopic morphology evolution, as well as the pros and cons of the solutions, were analyzed and compared. Finally, a comprehensive summary of the above models is presented, along with the outlook for future research in this field.

Abstract:Highly heterogeneous and complex micro-structure of semi-crystalline polymers challenges accurate prediction of their macroscopic behavior. Micro-mechanical models establish a relationship between the micro-structure and macroscopic properties (structure–property relationship), and are able of predicting not only the macro-scale behavior, but also the evolution of the micro-structure. Therefore, micro-mechanical modeling can be used as a virtual experiment to predict the overall behavior of semi-crystalline polymers, where the effect of any single micro-structural parameter can be investigated. These parameters include morphological information about distribution of amorphous and crystalline phases, and constitutive properties of both phases. In this review paper, two main categories of micro-mechanical models, including mean-field and full-field models, are reviewed in detail. Three different groups of mean-field models, namely single-phase, two-phase, and three-phase models are discussed. Besides, the morphology of semi-crystalline polymers together with different deformation mechanisms, involved in different deformation regimes, are illustrated.

Abstract:Transformations in the solid state are of considerable interest, both for fundamental reasons and because they underpin important technological applications. The interest spans a wide spectrum of disciplines and application domains. For pharmaceuticals, a common issue is unexpected polymorphic transformation of the drug or excipient during processing or on storage, which can result in product failure. A more ambitious goal is that of exploiting the advantages of metastable polymorphs (e.g. higher solubility and dissolution rate) while ensuring their stability with respect to solid state transformation. To address these issues and to advance technology, there is an urgent need for significant insights that can only come from a detailed molecular level understanding of the involved processes. Whilst experimental approaches at best yield time- and space-averaged structural information, molecular simulation offers unprecedented, time-resolved molecular-level resolution of the processes taking place. This review aims to provide a comprehensive and critical account of state-of-the-art methods for modelling polymorph stability and transitions between solid phases. This is flanked by revisiting the associated macroscopic theoretical framework for phase transitions, including their classification, proposed molecular mechanisms, and kinetics. The simulation methods are presented in tutorial form, focusing on their application to phase transition phenomena. We describe molecular simulation studies for crystal structure prediction and polymorph screening, phase coexistence and phase diagrams, simulations of crystal-crystal transitions of various types (displacive/martensitic, reconstructive and diffusive), effects of defects, and phase stability and transitions at the nanoscale. Our selection of literature is intended to illustrate significant insights, concepts and understanding, as well as the current scope of using molecular simulations for understanding polymorphic transitions in an accessible way, rather than claiming completeness. With exciting prospects in both simulation methods development and enhancements in computer hardware, we are on the verge of accessing an unprecedented capability for designing and developing dosage forms and drug delivery systems in silico, including tackling challenges in polymorph control on a rational basis.

Abstract:Numerical prediction of morphology in polymer blends during injection molding is of vital importance for mastering the material microstructure and optimizing the property of molded parts, in which modeling the morphological evolution in processing is the premise. The principle and crucial factors of the deformation of dispersed phases have been investigated in this paper, followed by introducing six deformation models (MM, JT, YB, affine model, shear model, and Cox models) systematically. Simulation results of these models under five typical flows (steady deformation in simple shear flow, transient deformation in simple shear flow, relaxation after step shearing, shearing reversion, and droplet broadening) are compared and evaluated. It shows that the MM model can be chosen for modeling the steady deformation or small deformation process in the injection molding, and the affine model is highly feasible for the transient large deformation in the high shearing process of injection molding. Finally, the selected models are used in the injection molding simulation for verification.

Abstract:Journal of Thermoplastic Composite Materials, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we introduce a coarse-grained model of polymer crystallization using a multiphase-field approach. The model combines a multiphase-field method, Nakamura's kinetic equation, and the equation of heat conduction for studying microstructural evolution of crystallization under isothermal and non-isothermal conditions. The multiphase-field method provides flexibility in adding any number of phases with different properties making the model effective in studying blends or composite materials. We apply our model to systems of neat PA6 and study the impact of initial distribution of crystalline grains and cooling rate on the morphology of the system. The relative crystallinity (conversion) curves show qualitative agreement with experimental data. We also investigate the impact of including carbon fibers on the crystallization and grain morphology. We observe a more homogeneous crystal morphology around fibers. This is associated with the higher initial volume fraction of crystal grains and higher heat conductivity of the fiber (compared to the polymer matrix). Additionally, we observe that the crystalline grains at the fiber surface grow perpendicular to the surface. This indicates that the vertical growth observed in experiments is merely due to geometrical constraints imposed by the fiber surface and neighbouring crystalline regions.

Abstract:Predictions of the mechanical response of nanocrystalline metals and underlying microstructure evolution and deformation mechanisms are critically important for the manufacturing and design of new advanced structural metals that aim to outperform those in use today. In this chapter, recent advancements in modeling processing-microstructure-property relationships of nanocrystalline metals are covered. These developments include linking mesoscopic microstructure, such as grain (orientation, size, and shape), grain boundaries, twin boundaries, and interface properties with the development of local stress states and deformation mechanisms during mechanical processing or straining. Many recent examples of these techniques are discussed, particularly those demonstrating unanticipated couplings between size effects and texture development. The chapter concludes with a discussion of recommended directions and associated challenges to further advance mesoscale modeling efforts.

Abstract:Crystallization confined in the microdomains of diblock copolymers represents the strategy of “structure-in-structure” self-assembly in the hierarchical fabrication of polymeric nano-materials. This review is a survey on the molecular-level understanding of crystallization confined in lamellar, cylindrical and spherical microdomains of diblock copolymers. Separate situations such as hard confinement, soft confinement and double crystallization are discussed, and the simulation results are compared with the relative experiments. The confinement effects on guiding the preference of crystal orientations were interpreted. Molecular simulations were proved to be a useful tool in understanding such a delicate fabrication of nano-materials.
A Novel Multiscale Methodology for Simulating Droplet Morphology Evolution during Injection Molding of Polymer Blends

Abstract:The morphology of polymer blends plays a critical role in determining the properties of the blends and performance of resulting injection-molded parts. However, it is currently impossible to predict the morphology evolution during injection molding and the final micro-structure of the molded parts, as the existing models for the morphology evolution of polymer blends are still limited to a few simple flow fields. To fill this gap, this paper proposed a novel model for droplet morphology evolution during the mold filling process of polymer blends by coupling the models on macro- and meso-scales. The proposed model was verified by the injection molding experiment of PP/POE blends. The predicted curve of mold cavity pressure during filling process agreed precisely with the data of the corresponding pressure sensors. On the other hand, the model successfully tracked the moving trajectory and simulated morphology evolution of the droplets during the mold-filling process. After mold-filling ended, the simulation results of the final morphology of the droplets were consistent with the observations of the scanning electron microscope (SEM) experiment. Moreover, this study revealed the underlying mechanism of the droplet morphology evolution through the force analysis on the droplet. It is validated that the present model is a qualified tool for simulating the morphology evolution of polymer blends during injection molding and predicting the final microstructure of the products.

Abstract:In this work, a non-isothermal viscoelastic computational framework is proposed for macroscopic polymer melt filling and mesoscopic spherulite growth. Firstly, the macroscopic viscoelastic governing equation is solved by coupled level set immersed boundary and finite-volume (LS-IB-FV) method. The melt-air interface is captured by the coupled level-set and volume-of-fluid (CLSVOF) method. And the mesoscopic crystallization behavior is predicted by the phase field model. Then, the numerical simulation for melt filling process is compared with experimental one to validate the coupled method. And it is simulated that the melt filling stage in a complex annular cavity with 17 small solid discs for the semi-crystalline polymer of isotactic polystyrene, and it is studied that the impacts of three different injection velocities on the flow modes, temperature distribution and solidified layers. Finally, in the regions of solidified layers, the growth of spherulites is simulated with/without melt flows at two different points. Numerical results show that the injection velocities can affect the flow modes and temperature distribution significantly. The morphology of polymer spherulite that is consistent with the experimental result can be observed clearly. With flow fields, the spherulites grow faster and densely towards the upstream direction.

Abstract:The present contribution deals with the thermomechanical modeling of the strain-induced crystallization in unfilled polymers. This phenomenon significantly influences mechanical and thermal properties of polymers and has to be taken into consideration when planning manufacturing processes as well as applications of the final product. In order to simultaneously capture both kinds of effects, the model proposed starts by introducing a triple decomposition of the deformation gradient and furthermore uses thermodynamic framework for material modeling based on the Coleman--Noll procedure and minimum principle of the dissipation potential, which requires suitable assumptions for the Helmholtz free energy and the dissipation potential. The chosen setup yields evolution equations which are able to simulate the formation and the degradation of crystalline regions accompanied by the temperature change during a cyclic tensile test. The boundary value problem corresponding to the described process includes the balance of linear momentum and balance of energy and serves as a basis for the numerical implementation within an FEM code. The~paper closes with the numerical examples showing the microstructure evolution and temperature distribution for different material samples.

Abstract:Introduction Olefin polymers are the most widely used materials in the plastics industry today. To optimize their properties and processibility, blending is often used. This is particularly important for the metallocene-catalyst based polyolefins. By altering certain shear-thinning and strain-hardening characteristics, blending can enhance the processibility of the material. This is in addition to any property enhancement or modification already formulated into the blending or alloying process. In the case of polyolefin blends, the mixtures can undergo both liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) and crystallization, complicating the blend morphology . This complication can be either advantageous or disadvantageous in term of structural control/property tailoring, depending on whether or not complex structures yield desired properties of the final product. To fully understand and utilize the potential of the complex morphology arising from LLPS and crystallization under non-equilibrium processing conditions such as shear and temperature gradient, we carried out a systematic study involving both multiscale characterization and multi-scale computer modeling on a model polyolefin blend. Comprehensive measurements of the morphology and rheology of the blend as a function of composition, temperature, pressure, shear rate, phase miscibility, crystalline structure, and thermal history are being carried out to form constitutive relationships that can be used for the input of computer modeling for pre-product evaluation, performance prediction and process design etc. In this study, we investigated the dynamics of structure evolution in polyolefin blends undergoing simultaneous LLPS and crystallization or cyclic crystallization and melting (CCM) after LLPS. In the former case, by controlling relative quench depths for LLPS and crystallization, the growth kinetics of the characteristic length shows a crossover of linear dynamics from crystallization to LLPS, separated by a non-linear regime where both ordering processes are important. In the latter, CCM enhances large-scale domain coarsening while introducing fine structures within domains.

Abstract:Liquid crystals are synthetic and biological viscoelastic anisotropic soft matter materials that combine liquid fluidity with crystal anisotropy and find use in optical devices, sensor/actuators, lubrication, super-fibers. Frequently mesogens are mixed with colloidal and nanoparticles, other mesogens, isotropic solvents, thermoplastic polymers, cross-linkable monomers, among others. This comprehensive review present recent progress on meso and macro scale thermodynamic modelling, highlighting the (i) novelties in spinodal and binodal lines in the various phase diagrams, (ii) the growth laws under phase transitions and phase separation, (iii) the ubiquitous role of metastability and its manifestation in complex droplet interfaces, (iv) the various spinodal decompositions due to composition and order fluctuations, (v) the formation of novel material architectures such as colloidal crystals, (vi) the particle rich phase behaviour in liquid crystal nanocomposites, (vii) the use of topological defects to absorb and organize nanoparticles, and (viii) the ability of faceted nanoparticles to link into strings and organize into lattices. Emphasis is given to highlight dominant mechanisms and driving forces, and to link them to specific terms in the free energies of these complex mixtures. The novelties of incorporating mesophases into blends, solutions, dispersions and mixtures is revealed by using theory, modelling, computation, and visualization.

Simulated morphological landscape of polymer single crystals by phase field model.

Abstract:The novel phase field model with the "polymer characteristic" was established based on a nonconserved spatiotemporal Ginzburg-Landau equation (TDGL model A). Especially, we relate the diffusion equation with the crystal growth faces of polymer single crystals. Namely, the diffusion equations are discretized according to the diffusion coefficient of every lattice site in various crystal growth faces and the shape of lattice is selected based on the real proportion of the unit cell dimensions. Spatiotemporal growth of syndiotactic polypropylene single crystals during isothermal crystallization has been investigated theoretically based on this phase field model. Two dimensional numerical calculations are performed to elucidate the faceted single crystal growth including square, rectangular, lozenge-shaped, and hexagonal single crystals. Our simulated patterns are in good agreement with the experimental morphologies, and the physical origin of polymer single crystal growth is discussed.
